Class of 2016....how ya doing?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Hence the reason I wasn't too bummed about being rejected. They explained why they have the dress code, and I kind of get it, but I don't know. I really don't want to be sitting in class all day like that. Especially when it's a million degrees like it gets down there. I would just want to be in running shorts and a t-shirt. And they said something about no shorts before 5 PM...

Pff professionalism. Alls that does is make your wardrobe cost go out the wazooo.

Hahah, that too! Although, I pretty much need to buy all new clothing cause nothing fits, which I'm happy about, but I don't want to spend money on clothing when I feel like I should be saving it for school...

This may be a stupid question, but what do students wear when they are in class all day? Business casual, casual, or extremely casual? By extremely casual I mean are people wearing pajamas and sweat pants to class?

Believe it or not, the dress code here is professional. As in business casual and businessy once in a while. Which sucks for me since I don't have that much biz clothing and it makes an even bigger dent in my ever decreasing wallet! Basically, here's what my current prof told me: "Dress how you want your profs and docs to see and perceive you. If you want to be taken seriously, then dress accordingly."

Most students I know wear nice jeans or khakis or slacks and a nice top. The only t-shirts I can wear are ones that promote the CVM or TAMU in general. Oh and no shorts or flip-flops and def no pajamas and athletic clothes.

Florida is just like Auburn. The thing I'm most mad about is that we can't wear anything with a brand on it besides UF. Annoying! Every hoodie I own has Florida state on it

CFC, you and I are just gonna roll outta bed and head to class.

Okay? 😉

Wow. Didn't realize that many schools had one. I thought it was just Auburn and Mississippi (I think they have a dress code...)

I think Florida started theirs last year so it's relatively new.

I was slightly exaggerating about the sweatpants thing... people at Penn usually wear jeans and T-shirts or hoodies. Or if you have a shift at the hospital that day - scrubs. No one would look at you weird if you had sweatpants or nice clothes on though.

I wonder what happens if you violate it, say, during hell weeks? Is it just a naughty-naughty-no-no finger wag or are there serious repercussions? I know during hell weeks, I may be wearing my 'business casual' but that certainly doesn't mean, for example, that I've bathed the formalin smell away and/or my hair is combed 🙂

And who said a nice pair of black sweat pants weren't a good substitute for black slacks anyways.

Seriously. Time to invest in some Jeggings. But not the real denim kind, but rather the informercial variety. The ones that are really just sweatpants disguised as respectable pants? Yessss. Finally an excuse!

I have discovered that tan scrubs will pass as khakis for business casual at my work 😀, of course, they aren't that picky because we also get away with capris that look nice. I just wear a polo shirt and scrub pants and no one gives me a second look 🙂. I am super glad OSU doesn't have a dress code, because I absolutely hate getting dressed up. And seriously, no sandals would be the death of me (and probably the rest of my classmates because I HATE socks and can't wear them because the line across the toe drives me crazy and my feet smell horrible if I wear shoes and no socks). I wear sandal shoes all year, even if it's snowy. Have to find something, though for when we do large animal stuff in the winter, because I'll wear sandals if going to the store, inside class, etc., but if I'm gonna be out in the snow or out for a long time I won't.

I have heard you get in trouble if you wear scrubs to class at UTK. Scrubs are for surgery and support staff, and not to be worn outside the hospital.

That being said, I'm planning on wearing nice jeans and nice tops on non-anatomy days, and then barn jeans and t shirts on anatomy days.

I would hold off on buying scrubs / coveralls until you've been given specific instructions from your school - my school has color requirements for some things so I would hate to see you spend money only to have something be the wrong color.

I found that out when I went to help out at the PAWS clinic. I wore bright purple pants with multi-colored "happy flowers" top.... and everyone else was in the same shade of blue 😴. Awkward.

I love the direction this thread went! 🙂😎

Although I'm currently wearing an aqua tanktop with red basketball shorts and blue moccasins, so I'm not sure that anyone should take my advice on fashion...

So a place in my town as Cardio III stethoscopes, so I went to look at colors. Def between the Caribbean blue and raspberry.

how pink is the raspberry? i'm considering Cardio III black edition vs. raspberry.....

Hmm. I'm trying to think of something to compare it with that everyone can picture. I didn't think it was too pink and actually liked it a lot more than I thought I would.

I almost want to say it's kind of a deeper fuschia color. If you go to this color chart, I want to say it's in the #FF00C0 section in the row to the right of the C...maybe like the 2nd column in??

Ok, here is my dilemma: black tube with brass finish, or chocolate tube with copper finish? Hardest decision EVER.

Oregon State provides stethoscopes/lab coats/scrubs, and pretty much everything else for first years! I'm sure I'm paying for it somewhere, though.

In fact, my mom was trying to put together a care package for me, and she called the school to see what color scrubs she could get for me. They told her that since everything's provided, the only thing I'm going to need is extra sleep :scared:

I'd go with chocolate so you can find it easier if you lose it because like everyone has black!

My husband just surprise ordered me the Cardio III in the Hunter Green!! I think I'm the only one on here that is ending up with the green but he said he ordered it to match my eyes (gush. he's just too cute).

Yipee! Ordering supplies makes it seem more real!

Jalyndani and other Mississippi, are you excited, you start vet school TOMORROW :scared:. :scared: You must be so excited and nervous! I can't wait to get started, it's July now, just one more month til I move.

Hope you have a great first day tomorrow! You'll have to let us all know how it goes. Kinda jealous, wish I was starting tomorrow.

Hope you guys have a good first day! It's so early though! Haha

I have the Cardio III in hunter green to keep up with the school spirit. Green is one of my favorite colors and matches my red hair🙂.

Oooh I love the brass and copper finishes. I would go with Chocolate, though it could make you hungry.

I have the hunter green. So you're in good company. 😉

I'd say! Anyone with a personalized, signed picture of Betty White in their possession is an excellent character in my book 🙂

I like white swan scrubs a lot. They fit my tall beanstalk bad perfectly! I just bought the cutest pair in aloe green (actually they are Cherokee) and come to find out the hospital I'm helping out at this summer has a dress code. Navy blue it is. Could be worse, but what sucks even more is that I can't even wear a hoodie over my scrubs if I'm cold!! Are any of your hospitals super strict about dress?

Oh and TW, I'm sure the books are included in the tuition, they just order them for first termers to make the transition a little bit easier.

:barf:

In all seriousness, that's adorable.

The emergency clinic I worked at would not allow us to wear anything over our scrubs either, unless we were wearing a coat when taking an animal outside. They ended up getting us all lab coats with our names and the vet symbol on them though 👍, which was nice.

Why am I having a hard time deciding on anything I need to this fall? I can't decide where I want to live. I can't decide what color stethoscope I want. And I also can't decide if I want to get a Mac, stick with a PC or go for a tablet PC...

I don't think I've ever been this indecisive in my life.

I worked at a hospital where female employees had to wear a certain scrub top while male employees could wear whatever they wanted.

... I didn't wear the scrub top.

Good for you! That is SO ridiculous.

Reminds me how for drug tests at my place of employment, they would cut off the women's hair, but just had the guys pee. They cut big chunks of hair too. I was extremely angered about that (not that I'm a druggie, but why not have the women pee also??)

That's cool. My normal hospital lets us wear WHATEVER scrubs we want and sweatshirts. Very nice.

And that is just beyond unfair and sexist. I would've demanded the same treatment.

The first hospital I worked at, we had to wear the scrubs they provided 🙄 and the second place I worked at, we wore whatever.

My hospital is completely color-coded. Interns wear maroon, doctors wear whatever they want, tech assistants wear hunter green, techs wear ceil blue (at least in ER dept) GP techs wear teal, pharmacy is dark blue, etc (yes we had a devoted pharmacy staff; I worked at a 100+ doctor practice). Friday was dress-down day wear we could wear whatever scrubs we wanted to, though I never really took advantage. Since I worked on the O/N shift, I never knew whether I was should wear 'other' scrubs on Thursday night into Friday morning or Friday night into Saturday morning

So to counter my indecisiveness, I decided to go ahead and pre-order my new phone, mainly because I'm hoping it will get here before I leave for Arts Fest on the 13th so that I can keep up with WW if I'm alive. Haha. Stupid thing just needs to stop being back ordered. Get your s*** together Samsung. I've been waiting for over a year to use a phone that isn't from circa 1700 and now you're holding me up. :meanie:

And in regards to work attire, I get to wear whatever I want at the one place I work (yay obnoxious green scrub pants) and the other place I wear jeans and a solid color scrub top.

I don't think that's very fair, but did it deal with gender or hair length? If a guy has really short hair, you're not gonna be able to see back for the drug test, but women typically have longer hair, so they could. Depends on how the rule's written up, if it says a hair drug test will be conducted if you're hair is longer than X length and it doesn't matter if you're a guy or a girl then I'd be OK with it, but if there are guys with longer hair doing pee tests, that's just not right. Still kinda unfair either way but I can see the hair length thing.

The first place I worked, we could wear whatever scrubs we wanted (yay walmart scrubs!). It was awesome because I was just married and completely broke (still kinda broke, just less recently married, haha).

The second place, Docs tended to wear jeans and a nice t-shirt/blouse, all kennel tech/vet tech/assistants wore some Urbane Scrubs that were an awesome grape color with lime trim. I loved the color/brightness/matching at the 2nd place, but since they were Urbane Scrubs, they were a bit expensive; and while they were definitely more flattering than general unisex scrubs...they could have been better. 🙂 All of our rooms were bright colors (sx was pink, exam rooms were green and blue, etc.), and eventually we painted the exterior purple, too. Haha, now no one can miss our building. 😀

Sucks about your hair for the drug testing, though. 🙁 That's rough.

So I need to accept my student loans but before I do I was wondering if anyone knew how the interest is calculated on our direct loans while we are in school. I know the interest rate is 6.8% but I remember vaguely from high school math that interest can be compounded different ways. So I just wanted to prepare myself and know how much interest I will earn after a year on my about $40,000 direct loan (my parents might be willingly to pay off the interest each year so I need to know how much it will be). I've never taken out student loans before and I'm finding this whole process very confusing (and I tried calling and e-mailing our financial aid person at the school but he has not gotten back to me and others have said he is always hard to get in contact with). 😕

I think it depends on whether or not you start gaining interest right away and I can't remember if they do or not. If it does, you have the option of paying off the interest as it accrues or capitalizing on it (I think that's the term). By capitalizing on it, you don't pay it off and the interest just gets added to your total. If I understand correctly, that new total then gains interest, so you end up paying more than if you would pay the interest off as it accrues.

No matter where I ended up going to school, I knew I would be screwed loan-wise, so I pretty much just signed off my MPN and just need to finish applying for the GradPLUS loan.

Well yes in fact it had to deal with hair length. But then why not have women just pee also? All the guys did not have long enough hair. What gets me is a lot of the guys hired did smoke some weed 6 months before. If thy had Long enough hair, that would have been caught. However, no matter what (unless they have a pixie cut) women had their hair cut off.

It just bothers me bc I feel like the better solution is to have everyone do the same thing. Especially since my first test was improperly done and ha to have it twice 🙄

Miscreants! 😱

I worked at a place that did a similar thing. And in the "personal appearance" code was that men couldn't have long hair anyhow, so the hair testing was always women.

Of course, it's also stupid that the men weren't allowed to have long hair. bfd 🙄
