Class of 2016....how ya doing?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Overall, I feel that I did really well on the oral anatomy exam. There were two questions that the professor asked that I stumbled over a bit but I got to the answer in the end. Then there was one question where I had the right answer but I was being too "technical". He had asked what occurs in a cow if both obturator nerves are damaged and I told him that the cow would exhibit severe abduction of both hind limbs and he kept asking, "But would would happen to the cow." Me... 😕... severe hind limb abduction. Finally he goes, "So, the cow would collapse." I guess I wasn't expecting him to want something that obvious.. oh well.

No on to part 2 of the exam...

You probably would have gotten full credit for saying "doon coo" as well.

We are done with the thoracic and pelvic limb. We have a lecture and lab exam on Monday on the AOI of all the muscles, arteries, nerves, and bone landmarks. :scared: I feel pretty good right now about the lab exam..the lecture exam will probably be difficult for me.
Animal Science exam tomorrow morning- should go very well.

I'm tired.

First day (1/3) of orientation was today! Woohoo!!!

I feel so much better about vet school now. Granted, it still hasn't started, and I know it's going to be tough as hell, but I feel like now that I'm getting to know my classmates better and, as obvious as it sounds, now that I know they're all real human beings and they're going to be going through the exact same thing that I am, I feel sooooooooo relieved. I was really nervous this morning as my boyfriend was dropping me off.

We spent a big part of the day today talking with two psychologists from the school's counseling office. I'm happy to know that they take stress on vet students very seriously here. The psychologists have their own offices in the counseling office on campus, but they're going to be visiting the vet school on a weekly basis just so we can make appointments with them if need be. They even add a little west coast/northwest flair to their counseling, and they taught us how to meditate, do yoga, and all sorts of stuff that I don't feel like would have happened in Oklahoma (though feel free to correct me if I'm wrong, tt & others 🙂). They have these programs installed on all of the vet school library computers just for meditation exercises, with this device that goes from the computer to your fingertips to measure your heart rate and skin perspiration just to help you de-stress. They'll also have sun lamps available for rent from the vet library to help combat SAD (seasonal affective disorder), which should help during Oregon's gloomy, rainy winter with days that about an hour shorter than what I'm used to from winters in Oklahoma. And if we want, we can go to their office to visit the "Mind Spa," a room where they've got all sorts of stuff for meditating and yoga, relaxation cds, a fountain, and a massage chair. It's pretty funny, but I feel like I might want to take a visit some day if I'm feeling stressed out!

Also, breakfast and lunch were catered and they were tasty 🙂 And I've made some friends. So all is well! Tomorrow is the ropes course; I'll see how it goes!

P.S. Since orientation started I'm officially change my status to vet student. Yay! I feel so official now 😀

I have one more hour to cram in as much information as I can before I have to leave to head out to the vet school. Then I have just over an hour of bus rides for more cramming and then I will have about 30 minutes once I get to the vet school to cram some more. I have decided that I am not going to be able to even know anything about cell biology. I took cell bio in undergrad but just be my very brief review this morning, it is quite clear that I do not remember jack ****e and that I do not have time to be going over basic cell bio when there will only be a couple of questions about it on the exam.

I bet you're kickin that test's arse as I write this!! :luck:

The upperclassman who told me that I would be having a rotation vacation LIED. I'm not saying that our work load is equivalent to what it will be once we're in class, because I know it's not, but if this is a vacation it's the worst one I've ever had.
I really do like rotations because I'm learning a lot and I love hands on education, but yesterday I was on internal med from 7am to 6:45pm and then did wildlife orphan feedings from 7pm to 7:45pm. That is not a vacation!!

Wow, orphan wildlife feedings is part of your rotation? That would be the awesomest thing ever! What I would do to have an hour of orphan feedings in my day, even if it meant I was in school over 12 hours. I really need to get to the wildlife center and volunteer. So, what all did you feed? Any tube feeding?

If you're only in school 13 hours and have no homework, consider it a vacation, seriously. Pretty much if you have the weekend free, consider yourself lucky and enjoy it because it will not last once core classes start.

I think we should get a wildlife center on campus and then have an hour class each day at some point in the day where we go work at the clinic. If they did that with the 3 years then let the 4th years have a rotation in there to actually run it, we could actually make a wildlife center work out on campus. I'd be a lot less stressed if I had that to look forward to each day 😍. Missing baby creatures just a little, give one a little kiss on the forehead for me.

I am finished with the exam! I am pretty positive that I passed, but not sure exactly how I did. I know for sure that I missed 5 points because I read peritoneum instead of perineum and I wrote about the peritoneum and not the perineum.. At least what I wrote was right, it just didn't answer the question they asked...

I am so glad it is over. Not to mention that the day started off rather crummy, glad that didn't transfer over to the exam too. Now it is time to relax and not look at anything vet school related for the rest of the weekend.

Now it is time to relax....

:highfive: Way to go! Enjoy giving your brain a break!!

At that point where I have an anatomy exam tomorrow and I should be studying, but every new thing I toss into my brain seems to throw something else anatomy-related out. What to do... What to do...

Are you drunk yet?

Do I remember that CSUs virtual dog anatomy was free online? If so, can some one post the link because I can't find it. 🙁

CSU is coming out with an equine version soon too. I'm really excited! Too bad I'll probably be done with anatomy by that time.

I think I am having a tough time with the time management stuff. I slacked off yesterday and I felt completely guilty about it all day today. Like extremely guilty. It takes me an outrageous amount of time to do relatively simple tasks. For example, I just spent 30+ minutes on an online epidemiology assignment that was supposed to be a "bonus" assignment (an easy way to get extra credit).

Now I have to do house keeping stuff today. I mean, I just washed dishes last week. Can they really need done again?

I know the feeling! I feel like everything takes me so long. I am worried about all the upcoming exams. Like literally I don't know when I'll get the studying in for all of them 🙁. Was super stressed yesterday but feeling better today (don't know how after that Anatomy lecture, but I am). I need to do some major Anatomy studying and Histology (I don't know how you feel about Histo, but I am like 😱, I know nothing!). Also Radiology coming up so have to study that and haven't studied Path in over a week 😱. I am always so busy but never feel like I accomplish anything.

If you have dentistry, we get out at 11:30 everyday 🙂 That rotation is the definition of rotation vacation!! I don't have internal med so I can't sympathize yet, but I do have orthopedic surgery coming up and I've heard that's a killer rotation 🙁 Just think of the wildlife clinic as part of the vacation....with all the babies we get to take care of!! If you need a venting session let me know, I'll have a lot of time on my hands tomorrow after dentistry!

feel the same way. have biochem exam on monday, then dev bio the week after that, then anatomy lecture/practical after that, then histology exam/practical after that!

i feel like i can't focus on all the subjects and keep up on everything, which is killing me right now because i feel like i'm focusing more on some subjects and letting other subjects slide a little......(histo....dev bio.....)

feeling a little better today about stuff, but it's very day by day, up and down for me.

Will it make you feel better to know I'm only on lecture 9 of Biochem right now???

Anatomy test tomorrow! Crap.

I've got a little over an hour left before my test and my brain is all fuzzy with origins, insertions and common actions. I've already had 2 Diet Cokes, poptart minis, medium bag of Doritos and a bag of peanut butter m&ms.

You can DO IT!!! Good Luck!! :luck: Which part of the body is the exam on?

All bones and joints and the muscles of the thoracic limb and neck. no nerves or blood supply yet, so its going to be really specific on muscles. its not near as much as you had, so I shouldn't be freaking out.

You will do fine. I honestly don't think we had to learn as many origins and insertions and things because we did anatomy in 5 weeks instead of 1 year... We definitely had to know the more important muscles' origins, insertions and innverations and things about nerve damage in those areas, but I still think that we didn't have to learn quite as many due to the shortened time frame. 🙂

Nope, we have a student run wildlife clinic at the U of I. When you join you get assigned to a team and each team has it's own patients that care for every day and then we rotate days being on call for assessing patients that get brought in and taking care of the orphans. It's amazing and definitely my favorite part of vet school so far! So yeah, basically I was in my rotation for 12 hours and as soon as I got out my orphan feeding shift was up so I spent 13 hours total there.
The vast majority of our orphans have been squirrels but we also had a couple birds. I love bottle feeding the squirrels! We only had one tube feeding so far that I got to assist with.

I think it would be awesome if your school got a wildlife clinic. It's definitely an amazing experience and the clinicians at our school have told us that students who do the wildlife clinic usually have better than average clinical skills by 4th year.

I don't have dentistry 🙁 Maybe next year! Yeah, I heard Lauren was in orthopedics for 12 hours yesterday....
Maybe I can vent to you at the tailgate tomorrow! I have some stories about one of our favorite people 😉 I was starting to like her more and then she said some things that made me want to slap her a couple times

Somehow managed to only have one class today...but hey I'll take it! 😀

Now for some weekend studying and football!

Happened to us too! The professor said it was the first time in 15 years this had happened... but it gave me 2 hours of freedom this morning 😀

That anatomy test kicked my butt

.

We do have some work that needs to get done both on a weekly basis, and also we have slew of modules that are due sometime in October? 😕 But overall, nothing as intense as class work. I think we will be getting double time though once classes do start in October to get caught up.

I ended up missing the tailgating 🙁 Except in my defense I came home to adopt a cat from my shelter! We will definitely be having a venting session one of these days! If it's who I think it is...then my next rotation is with her and will probably end up slapping her for you!

We lost our first student this week. 🙁 Not really sure on the details.

We lost one the first week 🙁
We've also heard rumors that the person caught cheating on our anatomy exam might not be around for too long 🙄 :uhno:
