Class of 2018

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
When is the earliest we can send in transcripts? I know it says transcripts received before May 7 2013, won't be used for 2014 app. So how would we judge how long it takes transcripts to reach them? Should we just wait till first week of May to get uni's to send them over?

I would time it so that the university sends it a day before apps are available. (Right before June 1st). Idk about your school but mine allows for timed releases.

Also, everything should be updated up to this point. Looks like we got a lot of strong/good applicants! I will definitely try to follow this thread religious to keep it up-to-date.

👍

Thanks for doing this darklabel. Where will you be applying to? Hey I've got an idea for this thread. Why not add age/reapplicant to this? I know there's MD Apps for that, but not everyone will be making one (I know I won't be). That way, you can just do everyone's updating haha

No problem, it helps that aside from pre med obligations (volunteering, studying etc), gf time and occasional gaming, I have adequate free time on my hands.

And right now leaning towards NSU but PCOM definitely has me interested, though I am worried Nova gets a LOT of applicants and PCOM has that whole Dean's LoR thing.

And yourself?

Well I'm 28, first time applicant. I'm actually very interested in NSU and LECOM-B, but family obligations would have my number 1 choice being V-COM-CC. It's a newer school, though this does not bother me much. NSU is expensive, though not that much more than V-COM; but the CoL is also much higher. LMU is also high on my list. I'm hoping being an Appalachian state resident helps out with V-COM (they have very few applicants for some reason), and that LMU does indeed like military- I also am reading a lot that there's a lot of nontrads here. Also the area is appealing. Realistically, I will be happy to get in anywhere. So why are you leaning towards NSU and PCOM?

Man too many high stats people here I feel like Tyrion Lannister right now :scared:

Well, at least you're not tagging your sister. 😛. Also Darklabel, not to be nitpicky but you have my sci/cum GPA backwards. I'm not sure if it's everyones and you just need to switch the cum/sci column headings or what. I mean, I wish my cGPA was that high.

Anytime theres a not to....but, I always know that whatever is before but is the truth 😀

FTFY 👍 and I try to follow the rubric but it gets difficult when people seem to post their stats in a difficult to read way.

That's what most people tell me but I keep seeing all these 27+ MCAT people here and just hoping they are the minority of applicants. I'd rather have a 3.2 with a 28 than a 3.7 with a 25...

I'm sure you're right though and I'm just being neurotic.

Nah, most low stats people are waiting for underdogs thread 🙁. I might poach some of the data from there if anything and have a super "SDN Acceptances of 2013-2014" data sheet for future SDNers to enjoy!

How's everyone status in preparing their apps?

Currently have 3/5 of my 5 letters prepared. Hoping my graduate advisor will still write me one, and I'm currently in the process of organizing shadowing for a DO physician. Working on getting a 2nd DO to shadow so hopefully that will leave me with 6 letters.

PS is done and edited and ready to roll. If yall haven't used the SDN PS Reader--I suggest you do.

This summer I'll be taking 1 Graduate Course, and 10 hours at CC. Hoping to bump up the GPA a bit more.

Realllllllllllly hoping to have an acceptance by the end of the year so I can began the process of quitting my obligations.

Everyone else already ready?

Anyone else ever get tunnel vision in this process?

I've already sent out to 3 of my writers the dossier request. I have brother-in-arms DO letter, but also looking to shadow a FP here shortly and get that letter as well since the former is a surgeon. I really haven't done my PS statement as yet. I'm just waiting for one of those days when I'm in the mood to write. I'm moving this summer, but really hoping to have an acceptance before fall semester. (wishful thinking)

Moving this summer--then moving again?

Lets hope we both have acceptances by the Fall!

Edit 1: +1 for both of us being nontrads. I feel old already at 23.

Well I won't have to move again for another year. In any case I've moved a lot in my life, even before the military. And I'm not sure if you're serious about feeling old at 23. That's young.

I am also a nontrad 23 yr.old feeling old.

👍👍👍

23--bout to be 24. Hopefully will start Med School right at 25.

I'm really hoping I can at least pull a 27 on my MCAT. NOVA-COM, I'm lookin at you!

May 11th. If I'm not scoring in my range, I'll delay.
If I take it, and score poorly, I'll retake in August and hope I can still get in this cycle.

good for ya.. Im taking mine in mid July.... I know its too late, but I just wouldnt feel confident if I take it earlier, how long have you studied for it so far? and have you done any FLs to see what range you're scoring?

I've been reviewing for the past 3 months, but only got super serious as of late.

I've done TPR CBTs and am scoring 26's and 27's. Will start the AAMC FLs maybe on Tuesday (one more TPR CBT before that). I'm keeping very detailed logs, so I'll be posting that prob on May 12th.

Hoping for at least a 29 on the real thing. Best of luck to you!

Hello!

Quite the above avg stats even for MD programs! Congrats! Interested in osteopathic philosophy?

Thank you! Where I will ultimately apply will depend on my MCAT score. I'm a non-trad, working full time as an EMT while trying to study for this test. It's difficult, but I'm doing the best I can, so we'll see what happens in two weeks!

Am I the only (crazy) person that took the mcat after their sophomore year?

quick question guys

for the schools that are asking for 2+ years of tuition in escrow before matriculation, do they count the interest as it sits in the bank?

say if I need to put 150k in escrow, that's like a couple grand in interest....

There a D.O. teaching at my uni M.D. school. I just wanted to ask her questions. At the end of our meeting she said she will write a LOR for me.

Also there is a local D.O. school by me and they allow pre-med to shadow, after you shadow they automatically write a LOR.

Question--- I thinking about shadowing more but I am not sure, I do also have medical experience as a CNA. Should I shadow some more or not?

CNA experience is in no way anything like physician work. I would shadow.

As for tuition in escrow, you must b a foreign student. Whether they count interest or not is up to the institution, but generally not.

So I decided for Summer term I am going to take A and P 1 w/lab and Fall A and P 1 w/ Lab. I do not know if I am going to school during Spring 2014-- I may just work a lot so I can get a car.

Also I am back to just 24 hours a week, hopefully I can balance it with school and life.

First time applicant here:

cGPA 3.54, sgpa 3.3ish?
Still working on finding a DO to shadow and taking the MCAT June 20. Also nontrad and working full-time.

First time applicant hoping to be Class of 2018!! Stats: cGPA:3.62 sGPA: 3.52 MCAT: TBA

So mad, try to tell my father I need a car because I will have to be taking the bus to school if I do not have one and he said I can not afford it even though I make about 250 a week and he will only get me a car if I get accepted to medical school. I would not be mad if I know he could not afford to buy me a car also I would not be mad if my father was not in the process of buying another house so he could rent out--- my father not a real estate agent he is a nurse that supplements his income with business projects.

So now I decided to apply to every private D.O. school, do all the secondaries, and attend all the interviews I can and he will pay the fing price.

I am getting older and realizing how fing stubborn my father is... when I was studying for the MCAT he doubt that I would get a reasonable score, even when I was going to take the CNA course he fing doubted me ( I had to pay for the course myself and get to school by bus) , he also doubted that I would found a job , he told me if I get a job he would buy my a car and guess what I don't have a car and now he doubts that I will not make it to/through medical school.

Sounds like he has some issues of his own. I do not think you are the problem because he should be proud that you are even considering medical school and took the MCAT. Just try to deal for now and know you probably cant really count on him. Start looking for someone else to lend an ear if you continue to go to your dad for support its only going to continue to frustrate you.

Sounds like a personal problem

Your father may be in the wrong--but you would be also if you apply to schools you wouldn't go to just to spite him.

I don't mean to be rude, but please keep your personal problems to yourself. Please don't put them on us. Good luck though!

How is she putting them on us? She is sharing some frustrations?
Even if she was putting her problems on us--if you don't want to address them. Move on.

😍😍👍👍😍😍

Can't wait for AACOMAS to open!
Old undergraduate cGPA-3.3, sGPA-3.0.
New undergraduate GPA is TBD/undergoing major renovations with Summer retakes.
Graduate GPA-3.6, but did not finish degree. In fact, I have a few unfinished degrees. It's complicated, and I've got a lot of explaining to do.
The good news- MCAT: 36 (11/11/14)

Good luck, everyone!

whoaaa great MCAT there! definitely will get a bunch of DO acceptances for sure, well at least as long as you have a few good extra-curricular in your background. good luck!

You can open up the current one and calculate it yourself, just don't submit it yet. I used AACOMA's course work calculator to do AMCAs also.

Great mcat! With your mcat and grad GPA, you should be good even with the old undergrad GPA. Good luck!

Update : forgot if I put this info in here already. Been shadowing a DO ortho and an Md FP and that's been cool. Got a committee to write me a letter. Idk when they will be done with it. I'm just trying to figure out the inter folio thing so I can start applying. I will be 99% done on June 1 ... Only prob is I won't take the mcat until may 30. So I have to submit the primary and update June 30.

I hope everything goes well for everybody. This process is stressful and grueling.

My stats are as follows:

3.7s
3.6c
Not scoring very well on my practice mcat
Hopefully I will improve a few points by may 30.
I want to go to Untcom 🙂

What's Untcom?? Solid GPA and EC's. 28 will open doors for DO, 30 will pretty much be a shoe in as along as you don't screw up the interview ha. What are you averaging on the practice MCAT?

Edit: oops kk nvm. I'm used to TCOM, sorry.
