Colorado State Class of 2014

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Hi--

Did you guys see this? It was in the admissions portal. Does this mean they have stuff specifically for us on that Friday? I emailed my RSVP. Maybe I'll get a schedule back, or something...

"COME VISIT OUR CAMPUS AND FACILITIES!! We would like to enthusiastically invite you to visit our University and College facilities. We will be sponsoring our annual Pre-Veterinary Visit Day on Friday, April 9, 2010, and will have a full day of activities planned. If you would like to attend, please email Laura Axvig at DVMTours -at- hotmail dotcom to make a reservation. We would also be happy to arrange a visit at another time and will do our best to accommodate specific requests in your area of career interests."

This is the same weekend as open house, so Im pretty sure that it's open to everyone who wants to learn more about vet med. Come by the VTH and say hi!

Oh, and my 2cents for the people deciding where to attend, if it's financially feasible I say CSU ALL THE WAY! I love it here. This semester has been a lot more hectic than last, but I have definately had a few weekends free to go hiking with my dogs. Plus, some friends of mine have a boat and we go wakeboarding out on the lake when it's warm out. Fort Collins is awesome and the professors here are great. I'm probably biased, but I wouldnt trade going to CSU for anything. 👍

I'm so excited I finally get to see the school and town. I'm flying in tomorrow morning and then spending the day checking out the facilities, going on a tour and then seeing the VTH. Right now I'm trying to decide between CSU, WSU and Ohio.

Anyone have some suggestions for food and maybe one fun museum/pub/performance location? I'm literally there for 24 hours 😱 and staying at the Best Western University Inn. I have an hour or so tomorrow morning to see the town, then time in the evening and a few short hours Friday morning. I'm hoping to take in as much as possible.

Thanks Everyone!!!

Good places to eat:
Coopersmiths (brew pub)
Crown Pub (brew pub with slightly higher end food)
Choice City (THE place to get a sandwich)
Bann Thai (if you're in the mood for thai)
Vincent's (if you want some place upscale)

If you're wanting something fun to do, go on a brewery tour (Odell's, New Beljum or Fort Collins Brewery), take a drive up and around horsetooth (it's beautiful!), or just go walk in old town and get a feel for our FABULOUS city. It's too bad you're not here for Friday night...from 5-7 at the Cork our very own Sophomore vet school band Bog Spavin is playing (they rock and are trying to raise money to go to the vet conference). It's always a cool time! Good luck!

ooooh awesome info! Have fun Chili!

Hi everyone!

So I just stumbled upon this thread recently.. I'm a little behind. I will be starting with you all in the fall!

I am currently finishing my M.S. in Cancer Biology at University of Colorado Denver - Anschutz Medical Campus (the one by sketchy east colfax...) and am buying a house walking distance from the vet school in Fort Collins.

I'd love to get together with you all sometime if you have a chance on weekends...and I'll probably be moving up there in May.

Also if any of you are interested I'll be looking for a female roommate. You would have your own spacious room w/ walk in closet and separate room for a study, both of which are in the basement, and it has a nice fenced yard. I have a 2 year old male husky/border collie mix and 2 cats. Unfortunately I don't think I can afford to have any additional cats in the house, but other pets will be negotiable. I don't have all the details worked out yet on what rent would be, but I can give you more details as I get closer to the closing in the end of March.

I'm so glad I found this thread!

Hello Memarsha! :hello:

I'm female and I'd say I'd love to talk to you about being roommates, but I have a cat!

I am in the process of buying a home (finalized in April) and I am looking for roommate(s) too.

I am a 29y male and I have had male and female roommates in the past. I don't care what your gender is, as long as you don't mind living with a guy.

My place has a yard, I don't mind pets as long as they get along with my sociable dog. The place is ~1100 sqft, the 2nd bedroom is 15x11, lots of indoor and outdoor storage, and a community pool. Rent would be about $400.

Anyway if you think you might be interested, or if you know someone else who is looking for a place, you can send 'em my way too.

I had soooooooooooo much fun in Fort Collins 👍 I was only there for 24 hours, but was able to see the first year area, the 2nd year building, talk to Dr. Park, go a tour of the VTH with a 4th year and then drove around the area for about 2.5 hours. Also since every single person recommended it I had an amazing burger and cider at Cooper Smiths (YUMMY!!!)

Overall I'm very impressed and think I would definitely fit in there. I haven't made my ultimate decision (need to do a little number crunching, etc) but CSU is at the top of the list. While I would love to buy something wherever I go, I just don't think it'll be feasible so I'll be looking for a place to live (26F with a 3yr old F pit mix) for hopefully all 4 years 🙂

Have a great day everyone and I'll keep you posted!!!

I'm sure you'd fit right in! I've dreamed about going to CSU's vet school and living in Fort Collins since I first visited when i was a sophomore in HS (and I just turned 25). The people here are amazing, and there's so much to see and do (if we have spare time between classes and studying)! So I hope you decide to join us!

Random question to those of you living in the Fort area... I took my dog to the dog park at the end of Overland Trail, just south of Drake and a couple days later he came down with kennel cough.. even though he had recently had his bordetella vaccine. I took him to Alameda East and they said there has been an outbreak of it recently.. has anyone heard of this happening around the Fort?

memarsha

i havent heard that. but that's terrible that your dog got kennel cough! but you know whats weird? is that i've heard of people saying that their dogs are getting leptospirosis. so then i spoke to my vet and she said that they've been misdiagnosing animals with lepto. anyway...i have no idea. i thought it was interesting/weird, you know?

what kind of dog do you have? Gruffi (my german shep mix) is having a bday soon and i was thinking of getting together at my friends apartment dog park and have a little party. like give out treats and stuff. lol. i'm one of THOSE people. anyway, he really likes small dogs that like to be chased...and chase him. lol.

Hiya,

If you're going to be at the Shelter Medicine Mini-Conference on the 27th, minnerbelle, me, and possibly you?! would like to meet up and go have dinner afterwards! Hope you can come!

Hey guys! Just found out I'm going to be joining you all in the fall. So excited! I have always wanted to go to CSU but never thought I'd actually get in. Can't wait to meet all of you!

I just got offered a position into the Vet Prep program but I'm not going to take it because I'm going to Cornell. But it is an ego booster! 😀

Thanks! I'm stoked. I saw a lot of you guys have done a graduate program or are finishing up. I got my masters last spring in reproductive physiology at West Virginia University so I'm glad to know I'm not the only non trad starting at CSU this fall!

Hey eringobraugh, did you get in off the waitlist??

Hey eringobraugh, did you get in off the waitlist??

Well sort of, its kind of a long story actually but I live in a WICHE state (Utah) which only funded 3 people this year. So, I just happened to be the 4th so technically I was place on the out of state waitlist for CSU and WSU. But then I got a call yesterday that one of the students that was supposed to get funding dropped out and I guess I was next up to receive it. So, within an hour of that call I got offers from CSU and Washington so its a little fuzzy as to how that whole thing worked out and if its really considered "off the waitlist".

congrats eringobraugh! question. is that yorkie yours, and will he/she be coming with you??? if so, can i cuddle wuddle the puppy!?!?

my first and only dog i had for over 16 years died a few years ago, and i've cuddled quite a few dogs since... but cuddling a yorkie is just a bit different from cuddling any other dog (even the other toy breeds)! i didn't make it home in time to see her go... in fact i didn't even find out until i arrived home from college after a flight from hell, only to find an empty home.

funny/sad side story: bambi (the yorkie) was really more my younger sister's baby. i guess her kidneys started failing, and my older sister had my dog in an ICU trying to keep her alive until my younger sister could come home and say goodbye. bambi's condition plummeted just 2 days shy of my younger sister's homecoming, and my older sister had to euthanize her.

so my younger sister's on her way home (not aware of any of this), and she decides to stop by the mall to exchange her ugg boots or something like that with her boyfriend. she gets a phone call from my dad in japan who goes "oh you're not home yet? there's a big surprise waiting for you at home" my dad's english has gotten rusty since he's been back to japan for over 6-7 years now. he thought surprise = anything that isn't expected.

my sister goes "oooh, yay!" and my dad goes "hmm... not yay" but didn't say anything else. my sister proceeds to go home for her surprise. yeah... that was bambi's ashes on the mantle...

i came home 2 days later. my younger sister gave me the news, and when i started bawling, she goes: "well at least you weren't told there was a surprise waiting for you at home" and proceeded to tell me the story.

it was a very odd mixture of heartbreak and humor to say the least.

anyhoos, i'd love to meet you and your little dog too!

I'm so sorry Minnerbelle! It's so heartbreaking to lose a dog. The yorkie in the pic is mine, her name was Holly, and we actually had to put her to sleep on Feb 1st, she was 14 🙁. She had been struggling with pancreatitis for about 4 years and she developed a bad cough and diabetes about a week before we made the decision. It just got to be so hard on us and it was the right time. It's amazing how much it still hurts, after 5 weeks. The price of loving a dog I guess. She was the best dog, I had her since I was 11 so it's been really difficult. I DO plan on getting another this summer though and you can DEF cuddlie with the new pup!

Hi ya everyone! Just wanted to let you know that tonight from 6-8 pm at the VTH jr. lecture hall there is going to be an animal welfare panel with several vets and the university bioethicist. It is 2 bucks for pizza if you want dinner as well. Should be good.

That's about as sad as "Old Yeller". 🙁

I know! I've heard that too about lepto.. I got him vaccinated for that too so hopefully that one will work 😉 but he's all better now.

I have a 2 year old husky/border collie mix, and his birthday is actually on the 28th.. haha. He's about 50 lbs but he does chase and like to be chased so if you end up having the party let me know & we'll drive up!

Congrats to all of you who got in to CSU 🙂 I will be starting my 4th year there in about 2 months...wow... that is scary!

I found this website the year I was applying for vet school and got lots of valuable info. I would be more than happy to answer any questions you guys might have... and will be very honest (not sure if that is always a good thing 🙂 ) I am a non-sponsored student, so I can be VERY upfront about the costs and financial reality that brings with it! So feel free to ask anything!

Congrats soxbox on starting your final year! You must be so excited! I know two of your classmates actually, both from salt lake city, you might know who im talking about 🙂. I do have a question for you, my fiance and I are starting to look for a place. Are there any neighborhoods you would recommend or stay away from? We are coming up next weekend and we just want to take a loot around to get a general idea of where we might want to be.
Thanks!

eringobraugh, I am pretty sure I know who you are talking about 🙂 Are you guys planning on buying or renting? Are you moving here with dogs or plan on having dogs while in town? There are some really nice dog parks that it could be nice to live near if you have a dog...

Overall, FC is super fun. Tons of parks, dog parks, bike paths (you can pretty much all over town on your bike (though sometimes the cars still petrify me), and as previously mentioned, tons of restaurants! The city is pretty clean and overall pretty safe. Obviously it is a college town, so you will have the idiotic drunken college crowd to deal with the closer you get to campus.

I moved into a condo I rented online (sight unseen except via pictures (I lived in MA)very scary!) and am still here 3 years later. I am about half a mile from the NW corner of campus. So I do have to deal with the drunkards... but really its not so bad.. and its usually only Thurs-Sat night. My place is rather small, its a one bedroom, wood fireplace, everything included besides electric and cable, and I pay $550.

So as far as where to stay away from, there is only one area that comes to mind... it is North of Old Town off of College but still in FC city limits. There is a large trailer park and some sketchy apartments. I am not sure if it has a name but I would avoid it 🙂

There are other things to keep in mind when looking... even if something is only like 2-3 miles away and you are like, oh that is so close, be aware that sometimes it can take 20 minutes to drive those 2 miles! I live 2.5 miles from the VTH and if I try to get there for 8am, I have to leave not a minute later than 7:40 and still that can be cutting it close. Granted, when I have to get there at 6:30AM, I can make it in like 6 minutes 🙂 Oh... and Fort Collins SUCKS at plowing. I am from the Northeast and we would get some good snows, and the plows actually came and plowed... here, they only plow the school bus routes. It is horrible. So those times, the 2 mile drive can take 30+minutes 🙁

Someone had also mentioned the train. OMG, I hate it. It runs directly through town. If you live on the West side of it, hopefully you will not have to deal with it in regards to getting to school, especially since they should be opening a brand new parking garage soon that is on the West side of the tracks.

If you look North of campus, that area is considered Old Town. There is the actual town part itself with all the shops, restaurants, and bars, but then there is a neighborhood surrounding all of that. Lots of quaint little houses there and you would be close enough to walk to downtown.

Sorry for the rambling 🙂 I am on spring break and its weird to not have anything to do!!!

We are planning on renting for at least the first year then maybe buying after that. We have 1 cat and will be getting another dog very soon, either right before or right after we move

I went to grad school at WVU, #1 party school in the US for the past few year so I'd say I'm pretty in control of dealing with the drunkards, but that's definitely great to know, thanks! I'd def prefer someplace quiet. They also majorly suck at plowing in Morgantown but that's good to know as well, good thing I just got new tires.

And you're not rambling, your info is fantastic, thanks a million!

eringobraugh, here are some websites that you might find helpful before you visit 🙂

1. This is the website I used to find my place... http://www.northerncoloradorentals.com/

2. This is a rental company that only lists pet-friendly places, so you wont have to worry about your cat and soon to be new dog: http://www.kevco.com/rentals/Pages/index.htm

3. Here is the city's dog park webpage. From this page you can also find a ton more out about the city (like the bike trails, parks, etc): http://www.fcgov.com/parks/dog-park.php

Hope that helps a bit... and definitely feel free to ask anything else 🙂

Hey Chili1818 -- I am part of CSU's Class of 2013 and I'm looking for 1-2 roommates for next year. I own a 4 bed/3 bath home just 3 miles from campus. I do have 2 cats and 2 dogs. I don't mind more animals if they get along with mine. Have you made up your mind on CSU yet? If so, I'd like to chat with you about my place if you are interested in learning more. Congrats on the acceptance!

Oh and any other females that are looking for CSU housing are more than welcome to contact me for more details.

Paperwork is being submitted tomorrow, so I have OFFICIALLY decided to join CSU class of 2014!!!!!:woot:

I guess this means I'll be making another trip out soon to check out places to live. I'm definitely interested, although may have to decide on a place without cats (I used to be pretty allergic and my dog has never lived with cats), but I'm definitely not shooting down any possibilities. I keep getting goose bumps everytime I think about officially being in vet school, so CRAZY!!!! I'm so excited to meet everyone. Have a great day folks.

Congrats Chill! I just sent in my paperwork too! I'm so excited! Going house hunting this weekend!

Hi,

I finally got the info from CSU about the pre-vet visit day, which, as suspected, is different from, although held in conjunction with, the VTH open house.

The Open House is April 9 & 10, geared at the general public.

The pre-vet visit day is geared toward pre-vet students only. It's April 9th from 8-5, and you have to RSVP. In includes a tour of the first year facilities, pizza lunch with current students, etc. RSVP to dvmtours at hotmail dot com by Monday the 29th.

I'm (attempting to) attach the schedule for both events.

Maybe I'll see you there!

I just RSVP'd too, so indeed, perhaps I'll meet some of you! Will there be a secret handshake?

I've been on a tour of the teaching hospital (and in what I think is the first year lecture hall), but I haven't seen any of the other facilities or rooms so hopefully it will be interesting! Some of the sessions also sound like they will be interesting or useful too. Thanks for posting that agenda, as prior to seeing it I didn't realize that it was different from the open house (which looks like fun, but not worth taking a day off work to go). So I've put in a for a day off work and plan to enjoy the day!

Yay, glad you'll be able to make it!

I will wear panda earrings--my secret handshake! (Although right now I don't heart pandas because they are the subject of my 10-page term paper due tomorrow. Silly pandas.)

Hi everyone!

I'm in Ft. Collins and am loving it here!!! Kind of last minute, but is anyone still up for dinner tomorrow after the Shelter Conference (should end by 5 right?)? Anyhoos, if anything, I'll be the 5'00 Asian girl toting around a dark haired bf. Don't be shy to say hi!

Hi everyone!

I am also in CSU PVM class of 2014 (yay!) My golden retriever and I are looking for two roommates-- non-smokers without cats (I'm allergic to both). I have two rooms to rent in a house with a yard, so another dog would be welcome as long as they get along with Shadow. Oh and I'm a girl but would be ok with male or female roommates. Let me know if you are interested and I will get you more information 🙂

Hi, any women out there who need a place to live? (Not that I have a problem with male roomies, but my honey might have a problem...)

I have a 2BR, 1 Bath condo 1 mile due east of the VTH and on the bus route to CSU. It's bright and sunny, backs up to a greenbelt with lots of trees, and is within an easy walk to Sunflower Market and Starbucks. Pets are okay (encouraged, even!), and there is a washer/dryer in the unit.

You would get the master bedroom with walk-in closet, and you would basically have the place to yourself for most the week--I commute and will probably only stay there 2-3 nights a week.

PM me for more details. Thanks! 🙂

hey, did anyone go today?

i wanted to, but I had class and I need to study for my exam.

I want to know how it was!

I went & so did she-of-many-admissions-offers 🙂. Think she's almost convinced to stay here, though!

Met a few future classmates, so that was cool.

It was interesting, but you've probably been exposed already to 99% of what was said. The most interesting things for me were the tour of the 1st year area and learning that there is a housing database just for vet students, which we'll get access to in a month or so. I was pretty enamored of the zoo medicine slide show, too! Oh, and I liked Dr. Perryman a lot! Actually, all the faculty in attendance were really nice.

Dr. McCluggage fixed my kitty... he'll be speaking at this...👍

I was there too! I didn't get to meet iheartpandas, but I did see her and her panda earrings in passing when our tour groups passed each other. Never got a chance to go introduce myself though. I failed to plan on a secret handshake myself so I'm sure you have no idea who I am... but I have dark hair, glasses, and was wearing a purple jacket.

I agree that much of the information I had heard before, but I definitely gained more understanding of the curriculum and logistics of the 4 years. Somehow the fact that 3rd years spend all their mornings in the teaching hospital doing rotations had not really registered with me before today. I also thought seeing the anatomy lab and the infamous cubes were highlights. I had never seen the 2nd year lecture hall before today, and think it is definitely nicer than the 1st year one which I have seen (but not today). I thought all the faculty who spoke were really great and I had some interesting conversations with some of the vet students. I also went out to the equine center (which wasn't terribly interesting, plus the presenter didn't understand who the crowd was for most of the talk), but the equine repro center was pretty interesting, plus who wouldn't love seeing all the little foals? And I upped my knowledge of eqine reproduction by about 200%. All the faculty who presented seemed really great in general too.

So they were definitely trying to sell the place, and I thought they really did. Problem is that they didn't need to sell it to me, they need to accept me! I am even more juiced up to apply again, but at the same time being reminded how great the place is makes me less optimistic that I will ever get in!

Was anyone else there?

I DID see you! And almost randomly stopped to talk to you as I was walking to my car, too. Shoot, wish that I had.

Don't give up hope!! You'll get in eventually. I liked what Dr. Stewart said about how they have to reject a lot of perfectly qualified people, so, it's not necessarily you!

Hey Guys,
I was just wondering if those of you that have house already living in apartment complexes or signle family homes with roommates. I'm trying to figure out if I want to live in a building that could potentially house undgrads and how annoyed that will make me 🙂. If you do live in a complex, do you have any recommendations of ones that are quiet an/or close to campus? Thanks!

my friend lives in Governer's Park and she likes it. i've gone to her apt too, and it seems pretty quiet.

and i hope you all have joined facebook! we have an event lined up to meet Temple Grandin. 🙂 we reserved a room that holds like 70-80 people. if anyone's interested contact me! i'll send you the event invite. 🙂
