Columbia Waitlist.....Thread i guess

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
wait, you're telling me, you called columbia's office of admissions, asked to speak with Dean Frantz, were patched through, told him how much you wanted to go, and he offered you admission right on the spot?

To answer the last to posts. I heard today...so yes, you could hear today. I called him this morning, and asked him about my position on the list. He asked me if I would come to P&S if accepted, and I said ofcourse. He told me that my acceptance would have come anyway, so he might as well tell me I'm accepted over the phone. Finally!!!
I started this post, and what a hell of a couple of months this was!!!

Good luck to you all, and I hope things work out the way you want them.

as promised earlier in the thread...

"OMFG WAHOO 😀 😀 😀 BLAAAAAR"

I got in today!!! I called, and after some back and forth conversation Dr. Frantz ultimately offered me a position in the class.

Stats: Wrote 4 LOI's since my late January interview, called 3 times, offered admission on the 3rd call. Interviewed with Dr. Frantz, no second interview, etc.

PM me with questions regarding the whole process. I'm praying that you all get the call. The best advice that I can give: BE AGGRESSIVE. They need to hear that P&S is where you want to be for med school. Don't be afraid to bug the hell out of them. Worked for me. Best of luck to all of you. :luck:

WOOHOO!!!

I have been away from SDN for a while celebrating, but I'll chime in here, with arguably the best Columbia waitlist story:

I flew in to NYC from California on Thursday, May 5 for Mt. Sinai's second look weekend. Before heading over to the Upper East Side, I thought I'd go pay a visit to the P&S admissions office, since I had just written a new update letter for Dr. Frantz. I figured that dropping it off in person and saying a quick hello would more thoroughly emphasize my desire to get in than mailing a letter from home.

I waited in the office and was told that it probably wouldn't be a good idea to randomly stop in and try and speak with the dean. So I rethought my approach and, as I was about to leave, Dr. Frantz came back from a meeting and agreed to see me. He read my update letter in his office, we talked for a bit about my summer plans, and we had some back and forth about how great a place Columbia is, how hard it is to get off of the waitlist now, and how he really wanted to take people that really have a passion for going to Columbia. I immediately said "Dr. Frantz, the minute you call me to tell me that I got in off the waitlist, if you do, is the minute I will tell you that I will be here next year." And then he said, "well, let's accept you right now."

I didn't believe him at first, and I still have my doubts everyday (I called admissions on the Monday after to make sure that I got in). After the exchange, he printed out an acceptance letter for me on the spot and handed me the packet of materials (picture, housing, financial aid) that most people get in the mail. I signed the form saying I'd accept a spot in the class and turned it in before I left, and told him I'd see him in August.

Anyhow, that is my story. FYI, I interviewed with Dr. Frantz in November, sent in a strong letter of interrest/thank you immediately, was waitlisted on March 1, sent in a LOI immediately after that, sent in another shorter LOI a month after that, and handed in the final update letter May 6, the day I was accepted. Although I do not think my background matters much, I was a Stanford undergraduate in ChemE with decently high numbers. I had a smattering of volunteer work, a few contributing author papers in a neurosurgery lab, and two years of nontraditional work experience as a management consultant.

Hope I can help any future fellow P&Sers out. PM me if you have questions. As every successful poster has said before, resolve is definitely the biggest advantage in getting in at this point.

Talked to Dean Frantz today. Apparently, they are seeing far fewer withdrawls than usual, and the waitlist is not moving too much right now.

Hey fellow waitlisters -

I just called Frantz this morning - GOT ACCEPTED ON THE SPOT!!!!! WOOO HOOOOO! He started to give me his whole "we are currently overaccepted" schpiel so I started to lose hope, but then he ended up offering me a spot right then. I couldn't believe it!

For those who are still waiting or are curious, here's what my waitlist timeline looked like:

1. Sent letter of intent right before waitlist letters went out
2. Sent follow up letter requesting waitlist spot
3. Called for second interview (granted)
4. Interviewed
5. Sent interview follow up letter
6. Sent email with research thesis
7. Called again to follow up
8. Sent final letter of intent with updates
9. Called to follow up (accepted!)

I did mention where I was holding acceptance in the final letter, and he actually brought that up (scholarship money), and wanted to make sure columbia was still my number one.

Thanks to the ppl on this forum for support/ideas

Wish you guys all the best

PM me for q's

congrats to everyone!!!!!! we really seem to be having it easier than last year's class, where the WL was pretty much equivalent to the 7th level of hell. go us, i'll see you guys in in august! 😍

to everyone else, CALL! and then call again, bug the crap out of them, you have nothing to lose. i wonder how many of us will come from the waitlist this year?

Anyone talked to Frantz recently? I wonder if he is telling people what their chances are yet.

i got a letter yesterday saying that I am under active consideration. i was pretty psyched about that.

Called today and Frantz is out of town until next Monday. Anybody still holding out?

Anybody heard anything recently?
