CSU c/o 2020 applicants, y'all ready for this?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
This is what I was referring to, and is a line in my Non-sponsored acceptance letter:

I wonder if that was referring to after WICHE decisions are released? Like if you're not offered a WICHE spot when the decisions are released, but later down the road a WICHE position opens up, CSU may not be able to accommodate it. I don't know, you may want to call CSU to see what that means. The only thing I've ever known 100% about WICHE is that it was ridiculously confusing.

Yup. That's what I was talking about in the long post.
Totally clear as mud.

I received this letter this morning via email on my portal.

I was accepted as a nonsponsored/oos applicant already.

"Thank you for your interest in Colorado State University's DVM Program. The Veterinary Admissions Committee at Colorado State University has completed its review of your application for admission to the DVM Program for the entering class of fall 2016. Regrettably, we are unable to offer you admission to the DVM Program this year for a WICHE position. Your application will not be considered further, for a WICHE position, in this application cycle."

But then scroll further down and it still says AZ WICHE has not been released. This is confusing. Maybe AZ did release?

Just got a random call out of the blue from a 1st year asking if I had any questions about the program and experiences. Was totally off guard and unprepared, but it was nice to have a hat with a current student like that

This is what I was referring to, and is a line in my Non-sponsored acceptance letter:

All that means is that if you accept your non-sponsored seat before knowing your WICHE status, that the WICHE seats may be unavailable. They won't revoke your non-sponsored acceptance, no matter what WICHE decides. But it sounds like it worked out for you!

I didn't answer (because Fallout), but they left a message. I thought it was a great touch!

I got accepted as an OOS but the cost and lack of hands on experience is starting to really freak me out!! Any current students have any input on these two matters? I am waitlisted at 2 other schools and am waiting to hear back from 2 I just interviewed at...Just don't want to pick the wrong school 😕

In the paragraph above that line it said if I accepted and then received a WICHE spot they would convert the non-sponsored acceptance to WICHE. The explanation that made most sense was that if I accepted non-sponsored and WICHE opened up more funding over and beyond their normal spots, Colorado could not guarantee a spot if the class was full. Still kind of confused me, but that made sense.

So the class size is predetermined, with x number of sponsored seats, x number of nonsponsored seats, and x number of WICHE seats. If you accept your nonsponsored seat before you know WICHE status, and in the meantime all the designated WICHE seats are filled by other students who already know they have WICHE funding and accepted their WICHE seat - even if your state decides later that you get funding, all the WICHE seats in the class are spoken for. So your only option to remain in the class is to take the nonsponsored seat.

Boomshakalaka.

I am also trying to make a good decision about what vet school to attend. What have you heard about the hands on experience at CSU? Have you received any comments from current students?

Many of the students I am friends with are also active in animal rescue, so between the cat rescue, animal house, NCFF, and many, many, many other rescues, they all had or will have 20- hundreds of surgeries under their belts depending on the time they had to offer their service. It might be possible to go through school at CSU with little hands on experience, but my impression would be that that is all on you.

Hi All, Who all in this group was accepted into the UAF/CSU class of 2020?

Lady, he was my lab partner in micro class this past fall. You should make stuff up and do everything in your power to steer him away from CSU. God forbid I have to spend another 4 years with him being a nice dude, helping me out, and grabbing stuff for me that was out of reach.

Any hope still left for non-sponsored alternates? I heard the waitlist moves fast but....

There is hope until you get a no or whatever the class entry deadline is this year. Some years that is over a week into class.

I'm a current first year at CSU. If you have time and inclination, there are a lot of opportunities to get hands-on experience after class participating in the club activities. I haven't had time to do that, but I'm also working & could be better with managing my time. Other students go to most of the club activities & get a lot of hands-on experience and seem pretty happy about it.

I really like CSU so far, but then again, don't have any other personal experience with other vet programs. I know two people who attended other DVM programs & are now at CSU. They both thought CSU was a lot better than the other schools they attended. One went to Tufts for a year & transferred into my class & the other went to K State.

Csu officially will pull alternates off the list up to the second week of class. I was an alternate 2x & if they don't get to your name, you never get a no, they just don't call you. You wait and wait & then the third week of class starts & you realize it ain't happening this year.

My two cents for IS being offered OOS.....hard decision, and everybody has different life situations. I did just get an email from my loan company letting me know how much interest I'm already accruing each month... and I'm just talking about this year IS loans & loans from my masters....woa.
I'm soooooooo happy I didn't take the OOS & it worked out for me. You should see if you can talk with the DVM financial advisor, Chad. I talked to him and had him run the numbers for me of OOS tuition vs IS before I declined the OOS offer the 2nd time and it made the decision easier for me. Most of us aren't use to dealing with this amount of $$; it's a whole new financial world when you start putting real numbers to it, especially the interest.

Hey there! I was accepted into the UAF/CSU class!
Congratulations! I am an alternate with hopes of being called on April 15th. Sigh. Trying to get an idea of how many people know for sure if they are going to attend the UAF/CSU program so I can decide to keep dreaming or let it go.

I, too, am an alternate for Alaska.

It's a tough road were on Schatzlife. If things go well though we might get to meet in August!

Do you think they would call earlier if they knew a spot opened up before April 15th? And how many OOS spots do you think there are this year? (I should have clarified -I'm OOS)

Yes, I imagine they will start working there way down the list as soon as they know people have decided to go elsewhere. I know they reserve five seats for Alaskans and the rest can be filled by OOS. Not sure if there are two separate lists for OOS and IS though. If anyone else knows more than me I would love to hear your thoughts.

I think they will call as seats open up, so hopefully you both hear before April as people decide if they want to go elsewhere!
When offers went out this year (and last year) the first round of offers went to 5 Alaskan and 5 OOS students. The final group of students last year ended up being 7 AK and 3 OOS students. I am not sure how they arrange their alternates list, if it is by state or not. I think as long as they get at least 5 qualified AK students, the other offers are up for grabs. I know there are still offers out for seats with the UAF/CSU class. Maybe the list will move as more of the OOS students hear from their IS schools.

The Alaska alternate list isn't something I've ever asked about, so I know nothing about that. I would speculate that they probably put the AK students at the top of the alternate list. That is how they handle IS alternates that they also place on the OOS alternate list for the CSU only program, but the AK program could be different.

I was told by the pervious head of admissions that OOS alternates will likely only be called after April 15th, and that was my experience both years I was on the alternate list. I was called 4pm April 15th the first year and noon April 16th or 17th the second year. I am pretty sure they over offer spots out to OOS students, so there is a bit of a lag time if someone declines an OOS spot before April 15th because of this. I've never heard of any OOS alternates being offered a spot prior to April 15th the 4 years I've been watching. In the past, I know of one time that they have even had too many OOS accepted students accept and had to delay them over to the next year. In case this scares anyone, I've only heard of this happening one time a few years back and the students were switched to IS to sweeten the deal.

The IS alternate list called as they get a spot open up and people are called before April 15th if they are on that list, or that's how it has been in the past.

Just wondering did anyone get into the vet prep program?

Does anyone know if they consider alternates for the vet prep program?

For anyone going to the Showcase Day on Saturday, do you know what types of things people wear? I'm assuming it's a look nice but not super fancy occasion?

In an email to me they said:

For those of you unfamiliar in Fort Collins, the weather here can be very unpredictable and change within hours. We would recommend bringing different layers of clothing. It may be 70 degrees and sunny, or much colder with wind and snow. It is usually warm and sunny, but you never know. Bringing a jacket would be quite wise just in case. Additionally, we do not require a formal dress code for visit day... but we tend to discourage wearing sweatpants. Dress somewhere in the middle of those extremes.

In reviewing older threads like a crazy stalker, it looks like they have invited applicants to the Vet Prep program who were on the alternate list. Also, if you Google search "Colorado Vet Prep" you can find a PDF that explains what the program is and some info regarding the selection process. Good luck to you!
