DMU-COM Discussion Thread 2008-2009

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I recently had surgery and am still on crutches. I am expected to book my interview within the next two weeks, so I have to seriously consider whether I should book an interview ASAP to get it in and risk being on one crutch at some point during the day, or wait a little longer and be able to walk without assistance while not taking advantage of this time sensitive interview

hmm, that is a toughie! traveling a lot and walking around campus would be very difficult on crutches. do you have any use of your leg at this point? It might be a pretty miserable experience for you.. BUT earlier interviews are better 🙁. Its up to you, maybe ask your doc!?

Yeah, it depends how you would do standing for a while. If you are going to injure yourself standing/walking too much you should wait. If you feel like you can handle a tour (they really didn't require a lot of distance, per se, because the campus is small) without making yourself tired by mid afternoon (interviews are last and you want to feel good going into it), go for it!

ACCEPTED TODAY!!! WOOHOO, I definitely think this might be the place for me!!!!

I interviewed on the 17th, so it was a two day early surprise!

Interviewed 10/17 - got waitlisted today. This came as a bit of a surprise to me because my stats are pretty solid (Overall 3.63, BCPM 3.64, 12 BS 11 VR 8 PS = 31P) with good ECs (i.e., had good research experience, leadership positions in several clubs, plenty of volunteering hours, shadowed DOs, worked as a political intern on a political campaign, etc). I thought the interview went pretty well also, even though I was a bit tired that day.
Sigh 😕. Maybe the numbers game is getting crazier than ever?

It's a shame because I really liked the atmosphere of DMU and the surrounding Des Moines area - everyone in the city of Des Moines that I encountered was unbelievably friendly and helpful. The campus itself was clean and bright, with what appeared to be top-notch facilities all around. Nobody I talked to seemed to have any beefs with school policies or how things were being run, and virtually everybody seemed happy to be going there. It seemed almost too good to be true in some ways, and maybe it was - it was my first interview, after all.

I have at least a half-dozen other interviews that I'll be going to, but does anybody have any idea about how much movement happens on the DMU wait list? This had been my top choice after the interview...

hey i interviewed the 17th also, who are you, are you the guy that helped lead the government campaign????

have you guys been finding out through email or calling in?

How long after we're accepted do we find out about the scholarships? Also, when we received the e-mail of acceptance with the terms, do we have to sign that sheet and send it back right away (and wait to pay the deposit), or can we wait until 12/15 to send everything? AKA, is there anything we need to send right away to secure our spot before 12/15? Thanks so very much.

So I got an interview invite today and am thrilled. I haven't been complete for five days and I got the email. Yay. But I am in a slight predicament. I recently had surgery and am still on crutches. I am expected to book my interview within the next two weeks, so I have to seriously consider whether I should book an interview ASAP to get it in and risk being on one crutch at some point during the day, or wait a little longer and be able to walk without assistance while not taking advantage of this time sensitive interview. Decisions, decisions. What are your thoughts?

No one will care that you are on crutches

There's no timeline for when you will hear back about scholarships. It could be anytime. I dont think he need to send in anything until 12/15....at least I hope not, cuz I havent done anything yet.

just 4 more days until i hear back!!! 😱

hey! it's you! i shared a plane back with you (if you remember). don't get too excited yet -- isn't it two weeks from the monday after the interview? that's about a week 🙁.

there were several people on the plane..which one are you? i've been checking when people are hearing back and it should be thursday (2 weeks total)!

for those of you that are waiting to hear back after your interviews, how did they go? Did you guys like DMU?

My interview went great! It was probably my favorite of the 5 I went on. I loved the school and even enjoyed what I saw and heard wrt Des Moines. The only negative I see right now is distance from home/the west coast.

Tony (the tiger). We had dinner at the airport with Eva.

Interview was the most laid back of all that I've had (I also went to Western and AZCOM). School is absolutely awesome -- great facilities and the students/faculty are very nice.

Of course I remember! It's just hard to figure out who is who by their screen name. Anyway, if you look at recent acceptances they all found out 2 weeks following on a Thursday. Was it the AZCOM interview that you hadn't been on yet? How was it?

It was terrible. The interview itself was bad enough to make me not want to go. So now it's DMU or Western for me. Which school are you deciding on?

Sorry it didn't go well...at least you have other great options!

oh great I am going to AZCOM on wednesday.....but its more for a little vacation anyways 🙄

one of my interviewers wasn't even there (student interviewer)
the other 2 were pretty cool
actually the female interviewer asked only 1 question the whole time and barely conversed
everytime i made eyecontact she would turn to the other interviewer in the room
it was really odd

couldn't wait any longer so i called
dean is currently reviewing files, should find out by end of week

when did you interview? if you were there 10/23 or 10/24 you should hear Thursday.

Is lab required? Absolutely required?

Want to know because if it is I'm not filling out the secondary.

It just says 3 semester hours of biochem..where do you see that the lab is required?

Biochem lab is NOT required. I took both semesters of the lecture, but not the labs and have been accepted.

there is not a biochem lab requirement

I agree..it just seems so late!

I remember someone being from NC...it was a fairly large group though. Best of luck! By your stats, it doesn't look like you need it!

Well, they called back (I did have a minor MI, but nothing to rush to the ED over) and decisions for the Oct 24 group are not in yet. She said if we don't hear by Wednesday to call again.

More waiting...🙁

looks like no news for today....tomorrow perhaps? 🙄

Hey all
figured I would join this discussion
Just got the fasTrack email...Anyone know what that really means. Super stoked to get it and saw that it wasnt a "cookie cutter" email from an earlier post. How have those of you who also go it fairing? I love DMU, I used to live in des moines when my father was in school there. Interviewing the 12/11 (second to last day left avail this year. Does anyone know if I will get a decision or have to wait the month till the new year?
Sorry for the barrage of questions, just excited as my AACOMAS to 8.5 weeks to complete

Good luck to everyone waiting on their decisions
