DMU-COM Discussion Thread 2008-2009

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Thanks for all the info! My boyfriend will actually moving with me, and he is transferring to grandview college for physical education....so we are looking for a 1 or 2 BR. I know someone said that west des moines will have "traffic issues" getting to school, but about how long do you think it will take to commute? I come from Michigan and am used to horrible traffic. Also, for those other areas you described such as urbandale, I have found some nice apartments but was not sure how far of a commute that would be either. Honestly, my first time in Des Moines was for my interview so I have NO clue, but I plan on visiting a couple times to search. Thanks again for all the helpful info!🙂

Driving from West Des Moines to DMU wouldn't be too bad, I'd say 15-20 minutes. I used to live in West Des Moines and drive to the east village downtown (which is further than DMU) every morning and it'd take me about 20 minutes save for an accident. Urbandale would be a longer commute because it's more northwest. Let me know if you have any other questions - I've been in this area for quite awhile!

I second that. Des Moines traffic is nothing like real city traffic (Chicago, Los Angeles, etc.) People complain but it isn't that bad. It may be going 35 but its still moving. Plus they (fairly) recently did an expansion of the interstate (235) so its better than it was...

I'd use google maps for directions and that will give you a pretty good time estimate. I should also note it depends where in West Des Moines you are coming from. If you are coming from near Jordan Creek it'll be about 20 mins whereas if you are coming on the east side of WDM it'll be closer to 10.

I am also interviewing on the 23rd. I saw some of you said you like DMU over Western, I also have an interview scheduled there and was just wondering why you liked DMU better, and any other info about either school. Thanks!

Let me preface this by saying they are both fantastic programs, and I had a great time on both interview days. I could honestlty see myself enjoying my time at either school. One of the most distinct things about both schools is their student body. The students LOVE their school, and they aren't shy about letting you know. They were all genuine, enthusiastic, and going out of their way to answer our questions and making sure we felt comfortable throughout the day. It was a great expereince at both schools and comforting to see a group of students who totally annihilated the whole "cut throat medical school" theory.

So, why DMU over Western (I'm from CA so this is a pretty huge deal for me to say i am going to leave so cal for IOWA)? First of all, the facilities at DMU are TOP NOTCH. Absolutely incredible. You can get a feel for it going to there website, but you also have to go and visit the school to see it for yourself. The simulator demonstration is very impressive and is a training tool that I deifnitely want to take advantage of. I have been to one other school (MD) that has something similar to DMUs simulator manicans, but it was not on the same level. Another thing that is appealing for me is DMUs emphasis on OMM. Obviously, you can get that any DO school, but the number of hours spent learning varies widely. DMU took pride in the fact that they considered themsleves one of the top DO programs for learning OMM. I think they said you spend aout 200 hours total learning OMM techniques. Since this is something I am very interested in, this is obviously a very positive thing. Another thing I thought was cool was that they try to have an OMM component in every course, not just "OMM lecture." So, while you are taking a regular med school course (not OMM lecture), they integrate the use of OMM into to some lectures so that you can get a feel of how the techniques would be useful for this siutation (hoefpully that made sense). Western didn't mention anything like that. DMU has also established a global heath department, and has established rotatinos in Africa (a place that I want to go to) that you can take advantage of during 4th year rotations. Oh and also, DMU gives their students quite a long time for electives during 4th year. THis is a benefit when auditioning for residency programs of your interest.

Another thing that is cool is that the dean is a surgeon (i think its the dean, its someone high up on the food chain), so he is really excited about everything having to do with surgery. The result is they have a basic surgical skills course that all 2nd years take. I havent seen this at any other school, MD or DO. If you arent interested in surgery, then i coudl see how this would be annoying....but I am interestd, so its a positive thing for me. Here is a desription of this course:

"The Basic Surgical Skills Course, taken in the second year, emphasizes the fundamentals of basic aseptic technique theory and applications of clinical practice. Under the direction of surgical residents, surgical nurses, and surgical teaching assistants, students are introduced to suturing, knot-tying, surgical instrumentation, donning surgical gown and gloves, dissection, intravenous insertion practices, and other clinical/surgical procedures and equipment.
The goal of this program is to provide students with a strong foundation in clinical/surgical skills prior to clinical rotation practice. As a result of this educational experience, students are prepared and confident to meet the challenges of performing and practicing skills during clinical rotations in their third and fourth years."

So you can probably tell that the things put DMU above Western for me are personal opinions...things that they offer that taylor to MY interests. This means that they may not taylor to YOUR interests. Best thing is to go to the school and check it out for yourself! The decision is yours to make. I have freinds that are at Western who chose to go there over Des Moines, and ironically my student host at Des Moines actually chose to go there over Western. So its different for everybody. Good luck!!!

I actually asked about OMM integration at Western, and although they don't necessarily offer anything like that now I think it is in the works for the curriculum in the next few years.

I think Western advertised a similar amount of OMM instruction time (~200 hours) for the first two years, but it doesn't seem like as big of an emphasis there.

It sounds like a lot of interviews are going well. DMU is my top choice and I recently submitted my secondary application and am expecting an interview invite hopefully soon. Can anyone share what their interview day was like? Did they ask the typical questions: Why DO? Why DMU? etc..... Any questions that came out of left field? Any advice or info would great! Thanks and good luck to everyone.

Check out the Interveiew Feedback forum on SDN. A lot of people post their reactions to their interview day (including myself). They ususally talk about their impressions, negatives and positives, and the exact questions they were asked. Its yet another great resource here on SDN.

http://more.studentdoctor.net/schoollist.php?type=1

To navigate from teh SDN home page, you just click the "medical" tab, go down towards the bottom and click "Interview Feedback" and then you click "MD" or "DO" depending on whcih school you are interested in looking up. Then you will see the lists of all the schools that have feedback.

In general, there were no questions out of left field. I actually don't think I was asked "Why DO" which was kind of weird, but i think my answer to taht question came up with other questions. Its a very relaxed day and you should enjoy it!!! Its a great school.

On your DMU application, do any of you fill in the "Is there anything else you would like us to know" box? I don't have anything else that needs a lot more explaining, but I hate leaving it blank. Thanks!

Thats really only to explain in unusuual circumstances that you might have occured which have influened your app (grades/mcat, etc). If you dont have anything like that, leave it blank.

If you want to add something in there that you feel is important by all means go for it. I cleared up and explained a few things about one of my clinical experiences that I thought was important. Nothing super special. JMHO.

wow, I just got an interview for DMU today and did not even finish my secondary application. They said they were doing it through some fastrack program. What percentage of people that receive interviews get accepted? Does anyone have any numbers?

this post comes up once every few weeks when new applicants get the "fasttrack" email. No one has really had any numbers. Western does the same thing with certain applicants.... Just know that it doesnt happen to everyone and its definitely a good sign. Keep it up and enjoy the interview day.

This is almost three years old of course but, when I interviewed the acceptance after an interview at DMU was close to 80%. After being on the interview team for 2 years, I have to say if it isn't still 80% its damn close. As long as you don't do anything foolish, you have a good shot of being accepted post interview.

a number of schools do these fasttrack interview invites now
i've received a coupe myself
i get the feeling its just there to encourage students with higher gpa/mcat to send in secondaries and check out schools they otherwise may have not applied to
and obviously it doesn't necessarily guarantee you a spot at the medical school
the only reason you would have a better chance than someone who didn't get a fasttrack interview is because your stats are probably better anyway
so yeah like i said, probably just to encourage students with better numbers to check out the schools

Well, my file has been put on hold. Does this pretty much mean my chances are slim to none at DMU?

The best thing you could do is send a LOI/petition arguing your case that you should be granted an interview. I dunno if it will work, but its worth a shot if DMU is one of your top choices. You might wanna call and ask if its acceptable that you send your petition in, b/c I know some schools ask that you do not send petitions. GL

I just got accepted today from DMU, has anybody else heard back yet? Also, does anybody know when financial aid packages are going to be awarded?

Congrats on your acceptance(s)! I'm pretty sure they said financial aid packages come out in late March. Unless you're talking about scholarships, and in that case, I'm not entirely sure. btw - When did you interview?

dang, if acceptances were given out on 10/20
and my interview is tomorrow (10/23)
i'll probably have to wait til almost thanksgiving to find out
:-/

I don't think that DMU works like some of the other schools. As far as I know, they let you know 2-3 weeks after your interview date, at least that's how long it took me to get my acceptance e-mail....not like some other schools where you have to wait for the committee to meet once a month. Good luck :luck::luck::luck:

I am putting in my seat deposit tomorrow. Its official....

Has anyone made a facebook group for DMU c/0 2013?

Good luck to all of the people still in the application process!

Yay!!! I just got the acceptance e-mail from DMU! Exactly 2 weeks after my interview (10/9). I am so excited and can't wait to start there next fall. Good luck to all the rest of you who will be interviewing.

Nice job. Did they offer you a scholarship of some sort?

Thanks! I haven't heard anything yet, but I'm pretty sure that comes separately. But I'm definitely keeping my fingers crossed for something!

I think I interviewed 10/3 or 10/4. One of those two days.

Got the interview email today!!! This is my first interview invite so I am unbelievably excited. I would love to end up at DMU.

I dont think they have started giving out scholarships yet..... someone may correct me if I am wrong becuase it has been a few weeks since I checked, so they might have started recently.

So how does this scheduling an interview work... b/c I'm not sure if I can go in november, and december isnt available yet

Just wanted to pop in and say I had a great time interviewing at DMU today! I am feeling strangely optimistic.

Will be making the final decision this weekend, but pretty sure it will be DMU Class of 2013!😍

Francon- if you need any advice come Feb and beyond, feel free to pm me- I've been there before!

i reallllly want an interview invite!!!! my 30 days is almost up, so i am getting really nervous. I am so envious of everyone with acceptances so far!

not to make things any more stressful, but i think my invite came a few more than 30 days after completion. so if you don't hear back on exactly day 30, don't panic!

ditto

so I am just paranoid and want to make sure that my seat is saved even if I don't pay my deposit until the due date....there was no form of verbal agreement or notification we were supposed to give the adcoms after receiving our acceptance e-mail RIGHT? 😀

I didn't get accepted here (yet!) but I think that is the normal procedure. You just send in the deposit and any paperwork they might have requested.

Did you get your Conditions of Enrollment form after receiving your acceptance? That lists all of the deadlines for everything that needs to be completed. The first deadline looks like December 15 - for payment of the first installment of the seat deposit and returning the signed Conditions of Enrollment form. But I'm sure you could sign and return that form anytime between now and then. I'm sure I will!

ok cool, that is what I thought but wanted to make sure and see what others were doing. I am so excited, we should make a DMU c/0 2013 thread!

Yeah, we should!! 👍 I can't wait to start at DMU!!

aw man! more time to wait, i thought 30 days was killing me. as long as it is good news, i suppose i can wait a few more days. my 30 is on the 31st. but this is really hard. :scared:

So I got an interview invite today and am thrilled. I haven't been complete for five days and I got the email. Yay. But I am in a slight predicament. I recently had surgery and am still on crutches. I am expected to book my interview within the next two weeks, so I have to seriously consider whether I should book an interview ASAP to get it in and risk being on one crutch at some point during the day, or wait a little longer and be able to walk without assistance while not taking advantage of this time sensitive interview. Decisions, decisions. What are your thoughts?
