Drexel DPMS 2020-2021

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Oooof!!! Congrats! This is exciting because I was marked complete 3 days after you.

Would you mind sharing what interviews dates are available to those of us who applied later?

I was given the option to interview on Mondays and Wednesdays at either 8:30 or 11 from this Wednesday through May 20th, so quite a few upcoming interview dates and times.

What are your stats? And congrats !! I just submitted today so I have a long way to go haha
My stats aren’t the best. 3.0 cGPA and 3.4 sGPA. I graduated 5 years ago and would say I have a decent resume of work experiences since then.

@BubbleStitch I can't believe how we were both stressing over the DPMS essay and both received an interview today:claps:

Congrats yall!

But damn, now I am going to start being neurotic since I was complete a couple of days before you and havent heard back. I am a re-applicant too. I applied in 2017 but a lot has changed since then.

I am also getting really anxious! I have a feeling that they will be sending out more interview invites this week (hopefully)!

Just got an interview invite today! For anyone that has interviewed already, what kind of interview questions did they ask/what was the interview environment like?
Congrats! On the day that I interviewed it was very relaxed and all people involved were friendly, including my interviewer Dr. Foster. For me it took the entire 5hrs but you are allowed to take breaks. I will advise you to come prepared with questions to ask. As for what kind of questions to expect, review the standard interview questions (why dpms/ducom, why medicine, strengths/weakness, etc.) but don't stress over memorizing your answers because in my case, my interviewer asked me very random questions. Ultimately the type of questions you may get will depend on your interviewer, so I would say to be prepared to have a conversation where you can convey confidently that you will be a good fit for this program and to the medical field.

Lol that is funny. It would be tragic if we rock our interviews but they reject us both for failing to answer "why drexel" in those essays

Time to find a way to work that into every interview answer

Shouldn’t take too long! What are you missing?
Just remember when all is complete you will get an email from Drexel stating your app is complete!
It says my mcat score, letters, and transcipt are missing although they've all been electronically sent

Help! I submitted my application and went to fill out the math/science GPA form but when I clicked on the link on the DPMS webpage it just brings me to the application portal and there's no sign of a form anywhere. Is there any other way I can access the form?

If you log into your application portal and look at the checklist, there should be a link to the BCPM form

Congrats! stats?
3.33 cGPA and 3.04 sGPA. Not the best and I didn't submit an MCAT score although I did send in practice test scores to see if they would help. I'm not sure whether they did or not because they never responded to that email.

Did anyone else’s math and science gpa come out lower using the form they provided? Mine is much lower than what amcas calculated and I am really confused! Should I email them about this discrepancy ? I’m pretty sure I put in the correct grades!

Yes...I thought so too. But, I received an interview invite so I'm not going to bother emailing them about it. I don't know how it's supposed to calculate it but mine was down almost 0.2 points. If you think it'll definitely help you, you should reach out to them.

Congrats! stats?

Not that solid. Graduated last year with a B.S in Bio.

cGPA was calculated to be around ~3.0 and sGPA BCPM form put me around 2.8.
MCAT = 507

Plenty of shadowing, clinical and volunteering hours

Literally same ! Mine was down by 0.2 points as well ! It’s fine though I guess haha

Dr. Weingarten

This is typical for him. His bark is much fiercer than his actual bite. He's an old-school surgeon that likes when people can give well-thought and concise answers. He likes capable people definitely.

I've had him as substitute facilitator for my CBL (case-based learning) group and once as a facilitator for a simulation center activity. He intimidated my group by yelling, "what are you waiting for‽ Doing nothing is going to kill the patient. You might as well just take a gun to his head now!" It made me laugh. Be confident and don't think that he's personally attacking you. I find him funny too.

Will there be more interview dates? I know 4 Dates have been given out already. I’m just nervously waiting! I was complete 3/24 and haven’t heard anything yet.

During my interview year, the dates went all the way to the last week of May, and it was the same for last year too. Please be as patient as you can muster to be, and the answer will be here before you know it.

Are applicants automatically rejected if they don't have a 2.9 GPA overall and for math/science?

What is the cost of tuition?

No, they are not automatically rejected. Others have done a good job of answering this. Your whole application is considered fully.

As for overall cost for the year, it is ~$60k for tuition and cost of living. I know this is a lot, but it's worth it in the end of the day. Think of it as investment in yourself because you're worth it.

How many students are accepted to DPMS? What is the average turnaround for responses after you receive an interview? Also, what was the typical interview day like?

Every year since Dr. Núñez has been director, which is going on 3 now, she has strived to have the class size be 45.

Turn around once the interview invite is taken is very quick. I received my invite and was on a plane to Philly a week later. At least y'all don't have to worry about airfare. The furthest date for my interview from my invite was 2 weeks later.

It's around 40-45 students that are accepted into the program. The typical interview day was as follows:
11:00-11:15 -- Authentication of interviewers
11:15-12:00 -- Welcome and orientation
12:00-12:30 -- Ethics essay
12:30-1:30 -- Q&A with the students
And then when all of those activities are done, you have about a 20-30 minute interview with a member of their faculty and then the day is done.

As for the turn around for after receiving an interview, I don't quite know that answer either, but I would like to know!! However, whenever they were giving statistics about their medical school program last year, they gave out the numbers for about 1,500 interviews for about 850ish acceptances. I'm not entire sure where all those numbers come from since their medical school is only about 260 people, so maybe that includes all biomedical graduate studies for Drexel? I'm not entirely sure, but the message I got out of that statistic was just above over half their interviewees get accepted.

Something also to consider, though, is that if my interview day was like anyone else's, then just about everyone who gets interviewed gets accepted. I say this because on the day I interviewed, there were 6 total people interviewing. There were four dates offered for interviews for the first cycle, so if each of those dates had 6 people, then that's about 24 for the first round of interviews. If it's the same for the second round, then it's another 24, which is 48 interviews in total, which is roughly the amount of people they accept. Keep in mind that most schools will over accept applicants because it's assumed that a couple might reject the seat.

This is all just speculation on my end and doesn't have a lot of weight, so absolutely all of this could be wrong!!! But like any other applicant/interviewer, I'm gonna get in my head about this and try to predict what may or may not happen... so these are just my thoughts! Maybe someone else can share what they think, what they were told, or what it was like for their DPMS year 🙂

I like how you speculate. lol

I just wanted to clear things up here.

I can definitely tell you that they do not accept everyone they interview. Overall, about ~175 (+/- 25) interviews are done each year from an applicant pool of around ~900. From the ~175 (I honestly think its closer to 200), 45 are accepted into DPMS and ~15 are put on a waitlist. I think I remember hearing that this last year people did get off of the waitlist.

Anyway, good luck!!

Please go to my past post for a good quick list of frequently asked questions and suggestions. Click here. Also others have put their input for this around my post and recently. If you have more specific questions, please feel free to DM me.

This is gonna be a weirdly-worded question but what are some things that could make an interviewer not want to pick you if it boils down to you & someone else?

what is the ethics essay?

There are about 4-5 different scenarios and the host will choose one for your interview group to answer. My prompt was followed by 3 short questions to gauge how well I work with others. The essay is absolutely nothing to stress over and it reminds me of the CASPer test. You get 30 minutes to type up a response that is less than 500 words.

Do you have to present your response? Or does the admissions committee just read over it?

YES!!! Mine did too. I emailed them but I didn’t get a reply. But I interviewed so I’m not that worried!

This is gonna be a weirdly-worded question but what are some things that could make an interviewer not want to pick you if it boils down to you & someone else?

A lot of you have expressed wanting to know what I thought on this question. I will preface this with the following with that I am not part of the admission committee. I have however had the experience in being trained on how to interview medical school applicants and give information and resources for the DPMS student. I also have talked to the dean of admissions and the other deans and faculty in the school a lot in regards to this. So I have a good idea, but please take it with a grain of salt.

As for the question, it really is so subjective with each interviewer. Depending on who you get, some things may be better received or not. With that being said, I do believe that there are things that you can do and say to up your chances.

Without it being said, wear a suit please. I know for a fact that the interviewers want to see that you are giving the interview the respect it deserves. As my interviewer has said plenty of times, look the part, make me believe you're capable, and then I'll let you play the part.

With that being said, I think the 3 things to truly get across in your interview to have a better chance are:
1. Your ability to stay your authentic self
2. Show your genuine drive to succeed and that no obstacle will stop you from doing what you need to find success
3. Be prepared for the interview

I think these 3 aspects truly will give you a hand up. I remember when I was interviewed by my faculty member, Dr Jameson the biochemistry professor, he asked me if I had any questions, and I asked him my favorite med school interview question, "if you think back to your favorite students of the past, what qualities did they possess that led to their success?" He answered these 3 qualities listed above, with an emphasis on #2, were what drew him to his favorite students.

Other things that are helpful are: be respectful, be confident in yourself, smile, make sure to know your CV completely, have answers for the med school FAQs (why DPMS/medicine? what are your strengths/weaknesses? etc.), know all info about the school (DPMS and med school), know about the ACA/obamacare, know current event, know what your coping mechanisms for stress/failure are, and know what your hobbies are.

Lastly, be human please. I know this sounds weird. The admissions committee really wants to add people who are socially capable of normal, everyday conversation. Since the interview in the end of the day is a conversation, show that you can hold a conversation while answering the questions (which I have heard students don't do sometimes since they want to showcase some strength or example that has nothing to do with the current question, which is a big no no) and be able to ask real questions that truly interest you and show that you have completely thought about what the whole DPMS and med school experience entails. I have some classmates that lack in this area in my med school class that slipped through the cracks, and they are my least favorite classmates honestly. They are not many thankfully.

So in short, be you and have fun with the interview as much as possible. I had a lot of fun with my interviewer, and now we talk often and he is one of my biggest advocates. Also show your strong desire to succeed regardless of any obstacle you may face.

I know this is long, but I hope it helps. I'm better at saying what's better to do than what not to do, but you can surmise what not do with what you should do.

If accepted, do we have to withdraw our 2020-2021 AMCAS application? Not sure if I should start mine now or wait till I hear back.

Omg same !
Debating if I should start mine or not :/
Since AMCAS isn’t transmitting apps until early July, my plan is to fill out the application but hold off on submitting it until I hear from DPMS. If they follow last year’s timeline we should have a response within a month which leaves plenty of time for AMCAS to verify and transmit

no idea when I’m doing TMDSAS Or AACOMAS though

Fellow Texas!!
I’m in the same both with both!

Hi! So I applied without mcat score. Now everything is verified but awaiting for mcat score. It still says incomplete. Anyone has been in that situation?

Whatever you do, do NOT withdraw your AMCAS. You won’t be able to submit again for the same cycle year unfortunately if you do that. If you get into DPMS, you can withdraw your application from all the schools you applied to. Also Drexel has a specific way that they want you to do your AMCAS for getting into the next med school year. It will all be explained once it gets closer to November.

Good thing with AMCAS is that you can always add schools on after submission. I don’t know what each individual school will do if you withdraw your application if you’re thinking about resubmitting in the same cycle year; so I suggest you call each of the schools to explain your situation and see what they recommend doing. Another good thing is that there are 2 waves of acceptances into DPMS, one in late May, and one in earlyish June. With that in mind, you can continue to apply like normal and take action when the time is right.

Do they reject people in the first wave of acceptance or do they just hand out acceptances and hold off on rejections till the end?

Mine is still under review. If they have to reject someone do they do it now or hold off on rejection till the end.

I haven’t heard anything yet. Super nervous.
Also, i attended the virtual open house...but my app fee was not waived. How do I go about that?

Rejections happen continuously. One thing to know for the interview invites, the eventual acceptances, and for rejections is that the admission committee meets on Thursdays afternoon (at least in person they used to, but I think they are keeping the same schedule most likely). So decisions can be as early as Thursday afternoon or the following Monday. This truly is a waiting game unfortunately that truly sucks.

When are the first wave of acceptances anticipated to be released?

They say mid-May, but I wouldn’t be surprised if they moved it back a week towards the end of May.

I recommned sending an email to [email protected] sooner rather than later. Getting a refund for things from the school has proven to be hard in the past for me when things weren’t done as prescribed from the get go.
