Edward Via - Auburn (VCOM-Auburn) Discussion Thread 2014 - 2015

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I seriously was hoping to have a calm Thanksgiving week. Oh well. Guess I will just sit here staring at my cellphone.

right? lol. the suspense sucks when it's close.

my in state allo school reviews randomly. so at least i know it could be a really long time. if i knew the individual committee meeting dates, it would probably drive me nuts because each time after those dates i'd be going crazy

Yeah. I can't deal with knowing the dates. I'd rather be in the dark. lol

There is another school I'm waiting on and every time they go through a review cycle they send out an email with the title "Acceptance Status" letting applicants know that their application is under review currently. I'm trying to tell myself not to puke when I get an email with the first word "acceptance" even though I know it will only be in review.

I agree, this is nerve racking... Im not even sure of the exact date that they should notify everyone, I just believe it is this week.

lol call jasmine! She will tell you

I don't see any messages from AACOMAS. Do you mind copying and pasting the message you see?

Here you go!

Hey guys, we had a few people join our fb group yesterday and said they were accepted yesterday. So I guess some acceptances went out! Hopefully more do today

ACCEPTED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

just got the call from jasmine. the committee met yesterday, so be on the lookout!

I wanted to ask about your acceptance so bad when I was talking to Jasmine. This is great news! Please tell me she told you to wear more orange.

Got accepted today!
Just got the phone call. Accepted 🙂

congrats guys! haha how awkward would that be "sooo... did baxt1412 get accepted?" 😛

anyway, orange was definitely mentioned on my interview day. i don't think i own anything orange right now but i could get used to it haha. my entire closet used to be blue and yellow for high school, now it's red and black for UG. so it's time for a change again.

Congrats to everyone that just got accepted! Has anyone gotten an ii within the past week or so? I know I am probably being neurotic, but I was complete on 11/7 and this school seems to offer them pretty quickly so I am slightly worried.
cGPA: 3.51
sGPA: 3.44
MCAT: 25 🙁

obviously my opinion doesn't carry any weight, but i doubt it's because of numbers. just keep waiting. if you feel like it, you could shoot jasmine oliver a call. all of the staff has been really nice, i wouldn't be worried about asking.

Thanks! Obviously my MCAT is less than spectacular, but I feel like it isn't lethal for this school since its brand new. Would you mind sharing Jasmine's number? I probably wont call just yet though, because I don't want to seem really impatient.

i was specifically told that my numbers were not keeping me out of VCOM-Auburn. i know our GPAs aren't the same, but I think if they were worried about my 24 MCAT they would have brought it up and/or not said what he said. and obviously it's not too much of a limiting factor as i was accepted.

keep your head up, they are very understanding.

i don't feel comfortable sharing any numbers that aren't already on their website or in any email correspondence that you have received. you can always call and ask for jasmine, in the event it isn't already her who answers.

Thank you for saying it. I was feeling like I'm listening to a size six say they're fat... (FTR I'm all about that bass)

Received my complete email on October 31 but haven't heard anything yet 🙁 Should I be worried? Should I call? This is my number one so I'm getting really nervous...

@baxt1412 Thank you for your response, and I understand your reluctance. I will try to get in contact with her then soon.
@drveebs2b lol I'm not trying to come off that way at all! Its just not an ideal score, but its nice to see others in the same boat being successful. Hopefully I hear something soon.

i found the scholarship info on their website, but anyone know if they offer any scholarships in the acceptance packets? or if those types of scholarships (deans, etc) even exist for VCOM? their listing is just private-type scholarships, not institutional.

Your MCAT is right at VCOMs average, so that should be ok.

Bump for new page

LOL it ain't no big thang. I just refuse to let SDN put me in gunner mode. We all want to have competitive stats, but sometimes the human gets lost in the numbers. Makes for crap doctors. Don't compare yourself to others, do you and do it the best you can.

^^ why I want to go to a DO school. Preferably in the South. IMHO surrounding ourselves with quality people will enhance our education. Collaboration, not competition. VCOM-Auburn's inaugural class will be a special one.

Happy Thanksgiving, everyone. Let's all give thanks for living in this wonderful nation, the sacrifices of our forefathers, the sacrifices of those protecting us thousands of miles from home, and for having the opportunity to even DREAM of attending medical school.

God bless.

Hello everybody! To all those that have been accepted, congratulations!! Can ya'll share your interview experiences and what kind of questions were asked during the interview? Thanks a lot and have a Happy Thanksgiving!

You should be able to look back a few pages and see quite a bit.

Open file, two 30 min interviews. My first was mostly academic and then story time. Second was similar. No ethics questions. They both hit on my powerlifting since I had it listed as a hobby. Also asked about research, why DO, etc. If you get Dr. Coffey, mention OMM.

Hi! Happy thanksgiving to you and thank you 🙂 I had Dr Hill and Dr. Witt.... And I spent about two hours the day before reading up on possible questions and let me tell you, a complete waste of time... They were so interested in me and asked such specific, personal questions that I could not prepare. Of course they asked "why do" and "why medicine" but then they asked me to elaborate. Be yourself. Be honest. Know your application! They really went through my application to get to know me

hi guys, I am interviewing in Dec and I have few questions.

I will be flying from Seattle, and I was wondering which airport is closest to the campus. Also, how did you guys travel from the hotel to your interview. Is renting a car the best way to go or is there any other mode of transportation that is better (shuttles may be?).

Also, are they looking for any specific type of students during the interview??

what is the interview format? Are questions based on your application or are they more ethical type?

Any other tips?

thanks

Hi! I flew to Atlanta and drove to auburn. I'd suggest doing the same since I'm sure atlanta will be cheaper to fly to... You definitely need to rent a car either way. With that being said, don't worry about the distance to the school since you'll have a car. I stayed at a hotel that was about 10 miles away and saved a lot of money that way. Also, read above and previous pages for interview tips... Good luck! Oh, and they're definitely not looking for a particular student lol. If you look at our fb page everyone is so diverse... Maybe they are looking for a particular character trait, but I definitely can't tell from aesthetics lol

i flew into montgomery and rented a car. if you are under 25, many companies charge an extra "underage fee". mine was through "National" and was an extra $25 per calendar day.

but you can sign up for free with USAA and there are a few companies that you can get that fee waived.

i checked the atlanta airport and for my date flying from my city it was going to cost the same. just check around though. there is a shuttle service from atlanta to auburn, but then you also have to factor in a taxi to and from the interview and also the shuttle cost back. it'll likely be cheaper to just rent a car (even without the underage fee).

they are looking for fun, intelligent applicants just like any other med school. (2) thirty minute interviews. both open file, so they will see grades and MCAT. my first talked about grades for maybe 5-10 minutes (there was some confusion on how my school grades labs) and then we got into my ECs and story time.

my second was a bit more serious and got into why DO and then i actually got asked a medical question believe it or not haha. dr. coffey proposed a patient who came in with back pain, what would i do first? if you get dr. coffey and you get a question like this, suggest OMM. i was naive and it caught me off guard so i just talked about scans, exam, etc. but he is the head of the OMM so suggest any number of things. he certainly wasn't mad or put off that i suggested scans and even said "i didn't expect you to have a perfect answer".

i wouldnt' consider either interview to be stressful (anymore than it already is) but the medical question caught me off guard. no ethical questions in my interviews.

everyone down there on staff is super nice and warm. enjoy your day. not really any lengthy walking (tour done by van) so don't need to worry about shoes too much.

Anyone know how many acceptances have gone out so far?

there are 43 members in the class page on facebook thus far. i'm guessing ~75 might have been sent out? just a shot in the dark, but not everyone is on here to know about the class page, not everyone will join it if this is not a realistic choice for them, not everyone has facebook, etc. so i'm guessing somewhere around there. that is ACCEPTANCES though, not seats held. don't get discouraged

Exactly what I would advise (as a local).
