I know absolutely nothing about ETSU (apparently it's in Tennessee but I can't really vouch for that...that's how little I know about the place), but this question is much more universal than one specialty at one institution. The answer (unsurprisingly) is also universal.

Would you rather be a resident at (reportedly or actually) crappy Program X or work at Starbuck's? Assume you're going to fail in the Scramble (because, statistically, that's the most likely outcome) so the question is not "Program X vs. Scramble" but "Program X vs. moving back in with my parents and working at Starbuck's while somehow trying to improve my CV so that I have a snowball's chance in hell of matching next year."

I don't have any idea what the answer to your specific question is, but you can probably answer it for yourself in the way I've (realistically) re-framed it above.

Thanks

better to have a spot than trying again for residency.

Rank them last. What a douchebag way to do an interview - definitely not standard of care.

lol what do you say of a program that offers dinner night to AMGs but not to FMGs (lumping FMGs together on certain interview days, and not giving them a dinner with the residents) ... Dont get me wrong ... its not about the food. I get plenty of food 😀. its about the principle.

Who did that? That's pretty horrible.

A higher tier program. Not that they have problems with funds!!!! (Oh, they also paid the hotel accommodation for AMGs only)

damn.

i know some upper tier programs (even in anesthesia, won't name program names) will have an fmg interview day minus the dinner, but i think they did fork over the hotel cost for the applicants.

any current or past resident wanna tell me more about it.

no dinner night and only met 3rd year and 4th year chief on interview day.
also, no exposure to noon conference and morning report on interview day.
4 hospitals to rotate through.

not sure whether to rank or not to rank?

scared of scrambling

If you think their IM program has issues, take a gander over at their FP program.

I'm not totally sure about IM, but I know their FP has programs in JC, Kingsport and Bristol as well. The Bristol program being the most benign and Kingsport being the most malignant.

Their OB program was on probation in the past, too. Not sure if still or not.

I think the IM program provides decent possibilities for in-house fellowships. I don't know what else to say, but it does NOT have a good reputation. I don't know too many details on the inner workings of their program, though.

rank em last as advised.

a friend suggested to me that they might check off the dinner for FMGs since it doesnt play a big role, as they will end up ranking the program no matter what (this is multiplied by hundred in the case of a competitive, (elite) specialty such as anesthesia).
