I am a Minnesota resident who got wait listed at the University of Minnesota, but has been accepted to EVMS and Creighton. I am not super familiar with these schools, so I would appreciate as much help as I can get deciding between these two.

Thanks!

So could anyone clue me in as to why the vast majority of people have voted for Creighton over EVMS?

I can't speak on Creighton, but I loved the family atmosphere at EVMS when I interviewed there. They have a great culture of service and giving back to the community, and also have amazing facilities (their sim lab is one of the top in the country). I'm still waiting to hear back but congrats on your acceptances.

Creighton over EVMS. I think its a pretty clear cut. I can't find a single thing that EVMS does better.
  1. Grading System: Creighton (Honors, Pass, Fail) to EVMS (Honors, High Pass, Pass, Fail). Creighton prides itself on cooperating, not competing.
  2. Residency: Creighton has way better residency matches. 95% get 1st choice (http://www.creighton.edu/publicrela.../2014/march2014/march212014/matchdaynr032114/)
  3. Clerkships: Creighton has hospitals 2 affiliated hospitals (Omaha and Phoenix campuses). EVMS does not have a hospital, so you'll spend your 3rd and 4th year all over the place. Might make establishing a relationship with a clinical instructor difficult. The only other MD school I've heard of not having a hospital is the University of Arizona - Phoenix.
  4. Mission: Creighton is a private school. EVMS states its mission is to serve the people of Virginia. You are an out-of-state student, so unless you have ties to community, I wouldn't find it super appealing. EVMS prides itself on its physicians staying in the Hampton community.
  5. Cost of Attendance: Even though Creighton is private school the cost of attendance is lower than EVMS for out-of-state students.
  6. Research: Creighton receives more NIH funding than EVMS, even though Creighton does not pride itself on being a research institution. There is an MS offered in Clinical and Translational Sciences at Creighton. (Source: MSAR)
  7. Dual-degree Programs: Speaking of Masters programs. Creighton (CTS, Ethics, MPH, MBA) offers more than EVMS (MPH, MBA)
  8. Service: Creighton offers more in regards to community service (ILAC, Magis Clinic, etc), I had a hard time finding anything else about EVMS other than they sent students to Haiti. Creighton is also Jesuit, so they are very social justice oriented.
I got most my information from the schools view books. Disclaimer: I am planning on attending Creighton this upcoming year.
