just wondering, did you work between matriculation of MPH and application to DrPH?

Thanks!

I got admitted to texas and was offered the opportunity to pay in-state tuition for the first year. But I was given a deadline to respond, or else my scholarship would be forfeited.I am waiting for other schools to respond(who knows,I may just get a full tuition scholarship)
I am waiting for HOPKINS, Yale and Harvard..I really love hopkins..
So I called hopkins to find out how far they'd gone and I was told it will take another 4 to 6 weeks to get a response!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

WHAT TO DO?!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I am supposed to reply houston b4 march 10..🙁

pls...i need advice..I am an international student and need as much financial aid as I can get.
From my calculations, the cost of attending texas for 2 years is higher than the cost of attendance at hopkins for 11 months!!!

so hopkins is cheaper in the long run..

actually, no. I am coming straight from my MPH at U Minnn (EPI). I specifically chose Berkeley to do the DrPH through the LabAspire program/training grant that trains people to become public health laboratory directors. For this track, they will exempt you from the post-mph work requirement, although they prefer that you have had at least 2 years of pre-MPH laboratory work if you are straight from your MPH.

I was in the same boat as you, except I'm from the US. They gave me a deadline of 2/1, but I couldn't accept since it was way earlier than most of my other schools. In the end, I didn't respond yes or no, therefore I forfeited the scholarship. But by not responding, you can still have a chance to attend later on if you can't get into other schools.

congrats everyone!

btw, anyone hear back from Yale MS programs (not MPH)?

Hi everyone, I'm new here but I thought I would join in on the hair pulling. :meanie: Has anyone heard from BU who applied to international health? GRRR... I applied to 6 schools, but BU is my number one choice and it is the only one I have not heard from

Accepted: University of Michigan - Epi
UIC - health sys admin

Rejected: Yale- health sys admin
Emory- global health

Interviewed- Tulane- global health systems management

WAITING: BU (international health)

i'm all over the place, I know.

Good Luck everyone!

Just wanna post a quick update here.

Accepted:
Emory (BSHE)

Rejected:
Yale (SBS)

Still Waiting:
UW and Brown University

I believe I will go to Emory in this case.

Does anyone know about the class size in Emory? I am attracted to Yale because of its small class size and the tight association with prof and admin. Unfortunately, I got rejected. I hope Emory is a better PH school than Yale (at least I will feel better about the rejection).

This afternoon I received an email from the Berkeley Graduate Recruitment and Diversity Services Program congratulating me on my recommendation for acceptances and invitation to Admit weekend. However, I haven't received an official letter from SPH yet. Did this happen to anyone else? I tried calling their office but no one is picking up.

Which concentration are you from? (I haven't heard yet.)

Health Policy & Management. Yea...it was a bit strange. I didn't want to celebrate too early...

I just got a hold of an admissions coordinator. She said the e-mails are put in a queue to go out at the end of the day. That means some of you will be getting e-mails soon! Yay!

Eeek! I hope my heart doesn't stop when I get an email. (I admit it kinda did last time they told me they started reviewing my app.)

Just got an email from UC-Davis...Rejection...
Other schools are still reviewing..
Waiting: UCLA and SDSU

Got an email saying I was accepted to the MPH in Health Services program at UW, Social and Behavioral Sciences concentration!

Visit Days are April 1-2.

For those folks hoping for a Friday email from Columbia, it looks like they're closed today due to the snow we got last night.

Man. I heard it was snowing like crazy last night so I'm not surprised. I am going to need a valium drip by the end of this!!!!!

I just looked at the Columbia website and it says that classes are cancelled but essential employees should still report to work. Hopefully admissions people are considered essential by people other than those waiting for news.

updates: Just got email from JHU and was accepted to the MHS Cancer Epi program.

accepted- Columbia, Hopkins, GW
waiting- Harvard, UMD
rejected -

stats
3.75 Neuro bio/ Physiology (UMD)
3 years GI/Cancer research at JHU (2 concurrent with undergrad, 1 full time after graduating)
2 abstracts accepted to ACG and DDW
770Q 630V 5W

just heard from St Louis and Georgetown...accepted into both of them!!!

congrats everyone!

The grad school for EPH (Epidemiology and Public Health as it's known within the grad school) notifies around March if you've been accepted. People who were outright rejected were notified in early-mid February.

hehe, I don't think they are considered "essential." If admissions were essential, then so should be all faculty members and staff. Essential members might just be security people, healthcare professionals/ER doctors who work in hospitals.

...Just got acceptance e-mail from JHSPH MHS in Epidemiology program. I'm in!

Accepted into UIC's MS in Cancer Epidemiology yesterday and GW MPH in Epi the day before....

Now its the mental battle between Columbia and JH !!
I'm excited but deathly afraid to make the wrong decision.....

Yeah, I figured it would just be security people and people in the med center. That's how it is at the university where I work now when we have furlough days. But still!!! Ahhh! I'm losing my mind! 🙁

Are any of these recent Hopkins acceptances for the MPH?

I continue to anxiously await my decision...

Finally heard back from Michigan for HBHE and was accepted. Their Admitted Student Day is March 19 for HBHE

Congrats man. I'm in at that program too. Found out last week. Want to do my interview with HPM at Michigan though.

I STILL haven't heard from UNC yet.

Any favorites so far for you? I'm trying to wrap my head around that decision now.

I heard from a friend who applied to HBHE that they're still making decisions and it is possible/probable to be another few weeks(they called to check status)

Everyone check your email for the harvard decision.

Just heard back that I was put on the waitlist 😛.

Ahh well since I got into Michigan my top 4 schools are Johns Hopkins, Michigan, UNC, and Columbia.

Still waiting to hear from UCLA, UCB, and Harvard.

Good luck with UNC, hopefully you will hear something soon!

Thanks Stories. Hopefully the fact that I haven't heard any rejections means I was accepted 😀

Accepted into UW (mph genetics)!!

I'm sooooo excited about this one...and now more confused than ever on where to go.

Just 2 more to go...c'mon Berkeley and Harvard.

Woohoo me 2 for UW!

UW sent me an e-mail saying i'm being recommended for admission to the Health Services Generalist track.

Man am I going to have some tough decisions to make when it comes time to choose schools. I applied to 9 schools, and have heard back from 7 of them (UW, UCLA, Michigan (1/2 interview at other program), UT Houston, Pitt, Columbia, Yale) all in the affirmative. Only UNC and BU to go.

I REALLY wish I could get out to the west coast to see UW and UCLA but that is unfortunately just really not an option for me both in terms of cost and time. It's really a shame because I feel like they won't be getting a fair chance when I make my decision and I initially really liked both schools. I'll try my best to really look at each school though. Now I just gotta start hearing back on financial aid decisions.

In at UW Health Services...yay! my first admit

still waiting on ucla/harvard/jhu

It might not be appropriate to post my question here, but I hope to get some advice or opinions from both successful applicants and those who are awaiting replies from other schools.

My question is simple: Do research experience in public health topics and research publication add much value to applicants' profiles?

I used to think that it will be very difficult for an international student to get a scholarship or research/teaching assistantship (or whatever) to study MPH, and hence I must achieve something to impress and convince the admission committee. I then planned to do research and publish a paper in an international journal (I know it's gonna be hard). But looking at your stats, I felt that international/ volunteer experience, GRE, GPA seems more important (my GPA is merely equivalent to 3.2/4) ....

Should I change my strategy then? Do schools offering MPH prefer someone with strong research background or with 10-month volunteer in Nepal or Indonesia? Are people with research background recommended to take MSc programme instead of MPH?

Btw, congratulation to those who have heard good news from schools. Wish that in 2 or 3 years I will be like one of you ...

For all those still waiting for UNC HBHE Program...

When I interviewed in early Feb they said the last day the admissions committee was meeting would be Feb 22nd and that the last people would hear around mid-March. The HBHE department's application due date was WAY later than almost any other school (Feb 15th) so I'm sure they were hit with a bunch of last min applicants and they also let me know that they were expecting a total of about 300-400 applications for 80-100 spots. I'm still waiting too so good luck to everyone!

The MS is a more research oriented degree, so if you have demonstrated research abilities, yes, a MS would be a good fit. However, MS applications tend to be more competitive than MPH applications. You should have an easier time getting into a MPH program than a MS program. It really depends on what you want out of your education. There is a stickied thread on the forum you may want to check out.

Just goes to show you the heterogeneity in admissions standards. Some schools will overlook a poor GPA, others will not. What you major in and what department you apply to will matter, as well.

You interviewed for the MPH for HBHE? Or did you apply to their PhD?

Just wondering, I hadn't heard of interviews unless it was MHA or perhaps HPM. It would be good info for others too I'm sure.
