Hi, I'm posting this poll for a new SDN member Auddy6 (Audrey). She has been accepted to CMS and NYMC. She wants opinions on which school you would choose. She is a CA resident btw

Please list pros and cons and any other pertinent info

Q: What type of curriculum does each have? PBL/lecture/both, or what?

Q: Do letter grades make school more difficult/competitive than P/F?

Thanks :D

This is Auddy6 (the girl that this post was originally started for.. Elle Woods was nice enough to post the question for me, since I am new to this site). I was just wondering that the people who are voting on the Poll, could you please also post why you are voting the way you are? It would really help me out to know the reason you are voting for one school over the other. Thanks so much!

Did the people at Finch seem even remotely happy? I got the impression that they were extremely disappointed in the school and its general location. It appeared to me to be a horribly depressing place to spend 4 years. That said, it is a U.S. medical school and those who got into it should be very proud of themselves.

none, I was just wondering if you stayed with a student at Finch? I stayed with 2 and met their friends and they were extremely happy at Finch. They were all excited about buying a dress for the prom they had that week, and they had time to go to the gym in the morning before class (since it starts at 12). I then searched for studets to talk to during the interview day, and I spoke with a guy who was very happy there (he did their masters program). The guys we saw in the computer room were joking around and smiling. I don't know why everyone had such a bad impression of the students, but I didn't. I really went out of my way to talk to them to get the real deal. The only exception was my unenthusiastic tour guide, but I think he just has a shy personality. Did anyone voting actually talk to a large number of students?

I guess many people who go there go because it is their only acceptance, but that doesn't mean they won't be happy. I think that would make them more grateful just to be there (like me!) :D

Sorry, I just had to defend my little Finchy. Don't worry, the students will be happier next year because I'LL be there! <img border="0" alt="[Laughy]" title="" src="graemlins/laughy.gif" />

Goddamn Foxy, you are AWESOME.

i like you! you are VERY cool!!

(and i'm not being sarcastic--i just thought i'd let you know that i appreciate what i see in you) :)

When my father read the list of schools to which I applied, he said: "What the?!? You're applying to a school that's named after a friggin' bird!?!".

Classic!

If I were choosing between the two schools, cost would be my main discriminating factor. I didn't interview at either school (I had the pleasure of withdrawing my app from both), so I really can't offer any legit advice. Congrats, though!!!

One of the students that hosted me during my interview also gave me the impression that he had to "settle" for Finch. I don't want to all-out state that he wasn't happy, but it was clear that he wished he had done better.

Swampy, my mom said the same thing. Now I just refer to it as Chicago Medical School, since finch doesn't make sense to anyone.

I'm posting some of Finch's 2001 match list below (taken from another thread). I would appreciate it if someone could post NYMC's also.

Yes, in the MS1 class, it's 2:1 and in the other classes it's somewhere near 1:1 (according to my MS2 student host).

Just wondering, when you guys visit schools, do you ask questions?

And with that, I should leave SDN for a while.....

Hi guys,

I've been to both schools and I liked CMS much better then NYMC..so I will be withdrawing my application from there.
NYMC... I am sure its a good school..close to the city. People seemed decent enough...I saw the hospital..and its ok..not that spectacular..Dorms were tiny! I just can't imagine that small a living space. I guess for myself, NY just didn't impress me. I am more of amid-west type person. It is H/P/F and students seemed to like that.
CMS...I've posted elsewhere that I am leaning towards it..but really nice facilities..they don't have a teaching hospital. Graded coursework. I actually asked my interviewer why that was the case..and he said that some people need more motivation then others to study hard..and if you are a good student in undergrad, you don't have anything to worry about! Matchlist is good..Since 50% of the class is from CA, most of them end up matching back home. That is a plus if you want to come back to home.
You know...for me its just my intuition...and I am going by it. I just felt more comfortable at CMS.

Good Luck in your decision!

Sorry Foxy and Audrey, I don't have any real information to add since I didn't apply to either school, but I just get sick of people dumping on a school just because everyone else does and THEY didn't like it. And because they think it's "easy" to get into. Ha! Be proud of your acceptances where ever they are from. I'm with maple, intuition is really important. Good luck in your decision!

Good Luck in your decision!•••••Slight correction it is Honors, High Pass, Pass, Fail. I was kind of surprised that you thought the dorms where small because I think they are a decent size but I guess it depends on what you are comparing it to.

[/qb]
Slight correction it is Honors, High Pass, Pass, Fail.

Sorry..you are right about the grading scale

I was kind of surprised that you thought the dorms where small because I think they are a decent size but I guess it depends on what you are comparing it to.[/QB]
A couple other people thought so too..that they were decent sized..but I guess I am closet clausterphobe! I need more space... :)

I would vote for NYMC over CMS, but it is mainly for personal reasons - how I felt when I visited the schools, etc. Having now been at an entirely pass/fail school this year, I can say that it makes a huge difference!! I'm not sure how different an H/HP/P/F system is from an A-F scale, but I am glad to not have to deal with it. Find out what the passing grade is for each school and ask students (many of them) what they think are the best and worst parts of the curriculum, how competitive students are truly (for example, UCSF is thought to be ultracompetitive, but I haven't experienced it once in my class and would never characterize it in that way), what percentage of students fail an exam or class in the first two years and what happens when someone does fail an exam/class, what the social scene is like, what opportunities are out there for clinical experiences in the first couple of years, how many hours per week you are in class/lab and how much studying the average student does, etc. Basically, pick the brains of current students, ask for honest opinions (understanding that there may be a disconnect between what they value vs. what you value) and what it is like to be a student there. Like I said, from my discussions and interactions, I would have chosen NYMC - but that is a highly individualized decision. Hope this is helpful. Good luck!

50% from Cali huh? That seems like a huge amount of people to take from one state. CMS should stand for California medical school. Why do so many Californians want to go to Finch?

•••quote:••• 50% from Cali huh? That seems like a huge amount of people to take from one state. CMS should stand for California medical school. Why do so many Californians want to go to Finch?
••••they don't the problem is that there are way to many CA pre-meds for the number of medical schools in CA. So what ends up happening is that the CA pre-meds are forced to go all over the country. The problem they have is that most state schools will not accept CA students so they are stuck going to private schools. So what ends up happening is that some private schools limit the number of CA residents they accept so that their school is not overrun with CA students. There are some schools who do not show preference to the applicant's state of residence and these schools get a crap load of CA students. So it is not that the students were dieing to go to a school such as Finch from the day they were born but instead applied there with the knowledge that their chances of getting in where greater than if they applied to the Univ. of Hawaii which doesn't take out of state applicants. Some of the schools with allot of CA students are Finch, NY med, albany, Vermont (i think).
