Glasgow Acceptance

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
It is a lot of stress and money, but they're worth it, even though I most likely will not be able to keep them myself. I have been trying since November. I could have placed them many times, but I didn't trust most and the ones I did trust, they suddenly got disinterested in them. I would never let them go to a farm family because they would be outdoors. It wasn't really worth rescuing them if they end up going back outside. I figure I will already go in a lot of debt, why not $1,000 more! It's for a good cause, for the cause of 3 lives! They are wonderful babies!

Smiles, as far as the pet travel sceme, I am pretty sure there is a way to fly your cat directly into Glasgow. I know there are not a lot of carriers who will take them, but there has got to be one that will fly him directly into Glasgow. If not, you could take the 1 cent flight with ryanair to London, pick up Miles, and take the train back to Glasgow. I think the hardest part is getting him prepared and finding a carrier to get him there safely. After that, everything else can be taken care of with little worries. Did you do the blood test which has to be 6 months in advance yet? Have you found out anything about housing yet? I was wondering if maybe the dorms do allow pets? It's Glasgow, not the US, and I was thinking there might be some dorms which are ok with them.

I put some links to some recent pictures of my babies!

Miles got the blood test last wednesday, so he'll be able to come after sept 11.

I emailed residential services about pets and they confirmed that we can't have any in campus housing. They did give me a guest login for PAD (Guest, password: nov2006), but my minimal searching hasn't turned anything up. But, I haven't really started looking for real yet. I figured I'd wait until they recieved my deposit and then contact Joyce Wason and see where to go from there. Also, after the deposit deadline I'm sure it will be easier to figure out who is going for sure and who is interested in getting a place together 🙂

That's pretty disappointing to hear about the dorms. I talked to my mom yesterday and she said she wants me to stay in the dorms because I always have problems with landlords when I rent apartments. Since my parents might be loaning me a little bit of money for school(to help to minimize private loans with high interest rates), I have to unfortunately listen which isn't very fun👎
If I can get an apartment together within less than a month in Glasgow, then I can bring my orange kittens. It's only urgent for me because I leave France in May, so I have to have a definite decision for them before leaving. Once they come to the US, they won't be going back to Europe! It's just too stressful for them. 🙁

did you try looking at the list of rooms available on the big vet wee vet site? at least then you could be confident that someone has experience with the landlord and you could live with other vet students. some also have multiple rooms available and many are ok with pets.

if you do end up bringing the kittens to glasgow, where will they be while you're at home for the summer?

I still can't seem to log onto the big vet wee vet site! I honestly don't know what I would do with them during the summer. I could look into seeing how easy it is to bring them across boarders all the time because I have a couple friends I could leave them with in France. That would be a much shorter plane ride for them. Bringing them is a last resort. I will see if I can figure out something in the states before hand.

try this link http://moodle.gla.ac.uk/vet/moodle/login/index.php
click "login as guest"
click "Bachelor of Veterinary Medicine and Surgery (BVMS)"
look in the 2nd box, click "BIG VET wee vet"
type "b1gvet2006" in the enrollment key box (make sure its a 1, not an i)

hopefully that wll work for you. it really has quite a bit of info for students coming from abroad aside from housing.

Has anyone else had trouble recently with logging into the Moodle site? I just tried to earlier tonight and its not working... I've done it many times before so its not like I don't know how. When I click the button to log in as a guest it redirects me to a different place instead of the usual login page... anyone else having this problem?

never mind! - it must have been a temporary glitch - it's working for me now...

Blagh, haha I know that I've posted the same thing a million times, but for you guys that aren't sure about whether or not you'll actually be attending Glasgow and you've been accepted, when do you have to let them know for sure? Could I find out like at the end of August that I'm accepted? Obviously I'd pack my stuff, jump on a plane and go there with enthusiasm, aha, but the unknown is KiLLinG me!

I wish the process wasn't so secretive! and for those on waitlists, do you know what position you are? because I don't 😕

:luck:

Hey Normed...

My letter said that they need to know by May 7th. So...I'm guessing that by mid-May they will be pulling from the waitlist.

I'm still undecided (so sorry!)...but it it's a tough life changing decision and I am waiting to hear from 2 schools before I decide.

Hang in there! People have already declined Glasgow so I think you'll have a good chance. I'm pulling for you!

I'm not sure how they pick from the waitlist...not sure if they group all North American's together or if someone declines from the US if they'll pull from the US versus Canada...just not sure.

Good luck!

I wasn't accepted until July 3rd or so (didn't apply until the end of May or even June) - so don't worry, it is possible to get ready in such a short amount of time (except for pets if you want to bring them). I even managed to renew my passport in that amount of time. Hopefully you DO have a passport, even if expired?

They told me that I was at the top section of the waiting list. They refused to give me a number.

It would be kind of exciting to get pulled off, but really disappointing also because I'm scheduled to attend another vet school in the caribbean May 7th. I'm not sure what I would do. Drown myself in the ocean I guess. Lol.

No idea. I sent an email asking for some kind of word on something and got zero response. The initial email I received notifying me of being on the waitlist said that they would be in touch in March. Maybe March meant May?

yeah, i've emailed them a million times! haha! I'm sure they're sick of me, but I'm dying over here! I was told that they would let me know in March as well, but I haven't heard anything... I guess Joyce was back in the US doing more interviews at the beginning of March. I had to call and actually leave a voicemail for Jill Kerr before I got an email back from anyone about anything... so maybe try that? and let me know!
:luck:

When I received my email that they would like to place my name on a waitlist, I emailed Joyce back accepting the waitlist; I asked if she could give me any info as to where I stood on the list or my liklihood of getting in from this waitlist. My reply from Joyce (in Feb.) said something like "as soon as I have more information, I will contact you. In the meantime, I ask you to hang on in there for the moment."
No date (month) was mentioned as to when I might be contacted-just that she would be in touch if my status were to change, I guess. I have not emailed back because I read on here that the date for deposits is not until May so I suppose they might not know for sure how their list will move until then.
I have searched this forum to see if others in the past have gotten in off the waitlist, but found nothing. Does anyone know if this waitlist ever moves?

A lot of people have declined their acceptances so the wait list will probably move soon. I got my acceptance back in mid march after my interview. I know Joyce went and did some more interviews in March and is just waiting on others to decline before giving acceptances. Try emailing Jill and Joyce some more. They are usually pretty good about emailing back right away. I usually get a response within a few hours, or at most, a day. 🙂

Glasgow sent my official denial notice via email today.[/quote]

aw, bellai, that really sucks... 🙁I wonder if I'm getting one as well. What did the letter say? are you on waitlists for any other schools?

I received my rejection letter through email this morning as well. Congratulations to everyone who got accepted and good luck! :luck:

:scared:
I am officially checking my email every 5 minutes throughout the day.. during Glasgow business hours. I'm a bit concerned because I didn't get my email about waitlisting until about 3 days after people started talking about it on this thread, so I'm nervous that perhaps I'm being rejected as well. I know that everyone says not to worry because there's nothing you can do about it, but this is intense!!

add me to the list of rejectees (via email today)....glasgow was my last hope for this year, so i guess now i start the process all over again.

Message from Glasgow:

We emailed you earlier in the year to advise you that you had been placed on the waiting list for the BVMS course, and I appreciate your patience while we made our decisions.

I regret to have to inform you that our places are now fully committed for the intake this September.

I realise that you will again be disappointed by this decision, but I do hope that you will re-apply for entry in 2008.

Sniffle, sniffle.

Thanks Normed. No other wait lists, just Glasgow. I didn't make it at any of the other schools either. Best of luck. I hope your next post tells us that you were accepted.

No news for me from Glasgow yet. Maybe no news is good news??

No news for me from Glasgow yet. Maybe no news is good news??

That's what I'm hoping too!! I emailed Joyce today regarding another question, and I got an out of office autoreply, so hopefully that means we're in the clear? At least for the weekend.... 😕

I understand the whole animal welfare debate, and I support it... and I would never want to fly solo (do surgeries w/out the guidance of a licensed vet), but I still want that surgical experience... which is why I will probably come back to the States to get that experience at my current job site or an animal shelter that allows vet students (with vet supervision) to preform spays/neuters.
Likewise, that is one of the big draws for me about Glasgow and the other vet school I was accepted to (Western Univ in CA), which makes sure you have your techniques down before you try to actually do surgery (by using models), but eventually they do let you do it at Western. Heh. But unfortunately, that was not enough of a draw for me (Western has this weird problem-based learning-- but all the time, meaning like no formal lectures... how do they not have a pharmacology course?...but I digress...), so I HAD to decline (and accept Glasgow).
So, now I am all worried about how I am going to pay for this, and what I need to do to get my student visa, and all the other 150 thousand things that must be done before I depart. Any suggestions on what to do and how to get things done super quickly? (Yes, I have seen the big/wee site... but I have to move REALLY quick, so I am looking for the fast track here).
I am also looking for a place to live... can you give me some names of the places that are close enough to both schools (won't have a car, so I will be walking to vet/main campuses)? And any places that I should stay away from? ...I'm talking about the rough areas... I really don't want to stay in the dorms, but I guess they will probably be cheaper unless I live with like 100 people (I am an exaggerator), which is also what I don't want to do. But I guess that is the way to go since I will be in a new country and know no one (?).

Thanks for your help/advice.

Congrats Miry! I'll see you in September! I think you made the right decision as you will have an experience of a lifetime. Glasgow will be more expensive than Western, but I don't think the different will be that much overall. I will probably live in the dorms, since I don't know how to organize living anywhere else. It is about 6,000 dollars for the dorms for a 9 month contract. it's not cheap. Joyce and Jill were out of the office on Friday so I talked to Maureen. I hadn't gotten my deposit form or anything like that since i am in France. Start working on financial aid. I still don't know what to do exactly. I am on the step after applying for the stafford loan. And as far as what part of campus to live on, you should live more towards the main University campus. I was told all of our classes would be on the main campus the first year. The veterinary school is quite far from the main campus. I found out that buses are pretty expensive too. It depends on zones, but for a month pass, it's a minimum of 40 lbs and this doesn't include much. I was shocked so I am considering a car. I have to learn how to drive a stick, drive on the left side of the road, and the drivers seat is on the right side all at the same time. Good luck with the process though.😉

I am sorry to hear that bellai and aggie. I am surprised that you got your letter of rejection already. I haven't even committed with my deposit yet so I don't know how they could tell you all the spots are committed already. 😕 Try to find out what your weak points were on your application and see if you can improve them for 2008. I am sure you can make it! Good luck🙂

I declined glasgow yesterday 🙁 , I got an automated response that said Joyce was out until the 23rd so hopefully that list will be-a-moving shortly after the 30th deadline. I will probably decline Edinburgh as well as soon as I get my official acceptance from Missouri in the mail and send the deposit. I agree that it's pretty weird that they sent out rejections when all the deposits aren't in yet. 😕 I hope everyone has a great time across the pond!!!

The walking time between the main campus and the vet school campus is 45 minutes (unless you walk faster than me!). About 3 miles. I lived around the vet school campus in Bearsden (but first year I lived on the vet school campus in Wolfson Hall). The buses are unreliable - and somewhat a pain to take. Kids smoking pot on the double decker portion...people smoking even though it's "not allowed" on the buses. All sorts of weird people. Sick people etc. From Wolfson to the main uni. there wasn't a single bus that would take you that way...so you had to get off and walk a lot or wait a long time for a different bus. Just wasn't worth it. Faster to walk, and in a way more refreshing (even in the rain).

A lot of students live in Anniesland, Bearsden, and along the river Kelvin. Bearsden is very "posh". Anniesland is not as nice but still convenient. Stay away from Maryhill if you can.

I walked too - never had a car. In hindsight, it would have been nicer but I'm not sure it would have been cheaper. I took a taxi home from the grocery store every week (couldn't carry my heavy groceries very far by foot).

A note about the dorms - what I disliked the most was having to move my stuff out of my room every time we had a break. This is because they rent the dorm rooms out to tourists/travelers/conference-goers during the breaks. A real pain, makes it feel less like home. So instead I moved into a house we rented and accumulated a lot of stuff! 🙂 I'm not sure if every dorm does this, but I think several do.

That's what I'm hoping too!! I emailed Joyce today regarding another question, and I got an out of office autoreply, so hopefully that means we're in the clear? At least for the weekend.... 😕

Have you heard anything yet, Normed? I emailed Joyce a couple of days ago-when I thought she would be back in her office & I am guessing she is back because I did not get the automated prompt that she was out-
I asked if she could let me know when it would be possible to find out where we stood on the waitlist. I have not received any reply. I guess it is still a good thing if you & I have not heard anything yet-at least that still means we are waitlisted, right?

I haven't heard anything either, but in such a case, no news is good news I think. It would be nice to know where we stand on the waitlist, but alot of schools don't tell you, so I don't expect it. I'm sure once the date passes where deposits are due, we'll start to get a bit more information.

:luck:

I paid my deposit yesterday. The date that deposits are due is very soon, within the next 2 weeks, I think. You should hear from her very soon. Try emailing Jill Kerr. If you don't have her email, let me know and I will send it to you. Hopefully no news is good news!

Just wanted to let you all know that I am looking for one new flatmate (female, non-smoker) for next year and we have permission from our landlord to have a cat. It's a four bedroom house, but we split the rent three ways and have a spare room since there is only one bathroom. The house is semidetached with a big yard, tons of storage space, and a really nice neighborhood. The room you would have is actually the largest bedroom in the house with built in wardrobs on one wall. In addition to all the normal stuff, the house also has a clothes dryer (not very common over here), a full size freezer, and wireless broadband internet.

We are about 5 minutes walk from the train station and buses to the main university are just a couple blocks away. Walking to the main uni takes about 40 minutes and the vet school is about 30 minutes. The neighborhood is very family oriented and I feel perfectly safe waking here after dark.

You would be sharing with me and one other girl (currently 2nd year), both Americans. If you don't have a cat to bring over, we like to foster cats so we have warm furry things around 🙂 We also have a car for grocery trips, etc.

The room is available starting July 1 so please get in touch with me if you are interested. Price is £300/month. I know it is a bit more expensive than some other places, but it is also in a much nicer, in a safer location, and has a lot of extra perks.

I received a letter in the mail once I sent in my deposit to Glasgow. It had some legal jargon and it said something about if I withdraw from Glasgow than I will not be able to apply to another school. Does anyone know anything about this. I am waiting to hear from my alternate schools in the US and I was wondering if this would make it so I would not be able to accept an alternate spot if they offer it. I am just trying to leave my options open.

so is anyone else having a hard time searching for an apt? I've contacted a million people on the moodle website and searched I don't know how many websites and can't find a place!!! I was hoping to live with another vet student, close to the vet school (or at least close to a bus line that ran to the vet school), in a decent neighborhood that would allow me to bring my dog over (she's very friendly with all animals and people)... I just can't find anything ... I feel like I'm going to be homeless when I come over there at the end of the summer...

Should I be trying to find a place without the dog? Is she my sticking point 🙁? I'd really do not want to leave her for a year with my parents but they are willing to keep her for me if that is what it is going to take for me to get a place... I just don't want to leave her behind if I can avoid it! I've even offered to start paying rent in July if that is what it will take for me to get a flat!

Has anyone figured out what they are going to do with their animals when they leave for the summer? I have yet 3 more weeks to make a decision on my 3 foster kitties and I want to do what is best for them. Since we leave at least 4 months out of the year, and it's not really feasible to bring them home with us each time, I was just seeing if anyone has figured anything out yet on that. 😕

I recommend the main university housing website. I had luck there once. You can find it from the main university website (http://www.gla.ac.uk).

I emailed every rescue group I could find, in or near Glasgow. I asked them about finding animals homes there and also finding foster homes when you leave for the summer. They said they thought they could find foster homes. I think there are a lot of American students who bring their pets abroad. Is this what most people do with their pets when they are away all that time(leave them with a foster home)? Bringing animals to the UK is very complicated. I would still need to do the 6 month blood test.

Hey guys.. I got accepted to Royal Veterinary College today, so I most likely will be declining my spot on the waitlist. Good luck! :luck:

twh11 or anyone -

Does anyone know what the letter states regarding withdrawing from Glasgow and applying to another school after sending in your deposit? I haven't seen any legal documentation like that and I am wondering if my packet is complete. Please let me know what the letter states if at all possible.

Thanks!

One of my biggest concerns with this school is their testing style since it is so different from the US style. Do you know if many people from the US struggle with this when they come over? How do people go about adjusting to it? Or do many people not find it a problem?

I think the style of testing will be much more beneficial to American students! They give so many dang tests in college I found myself trying to cram all of the info into my head for one test and afterwards allow myself to immediately forget most of it, so I'd have room for all of the new info for the next test in two weeks. It got really ridiculous! Most of the time finals weren't even cumulative because the profs knew that was what everyone was doing. I think fewer cumulative tests will force us to retain things better and to study at a better pace for retention. Maybe it's dorky but I'm kind of excited about this new style!

Does anyone know what the pass rate on the NAVLE is for students coming out of Glasgow? I know it's decent but I'm looking for specifics and I can't find the stats anywhere.

I did get this information from I think Joyce or someone there. I can't remember. It is very good. It was at one time 100% but I think now, it is 96% or it could be higher. I can't remember what she said exactly but I know it is either 96 or higher. And as far as admitted students, I think I was told that 98% graduate. Pretty good. I don't think we have much to worry about.

I received an email from Joyce today telling me that the deadline for acceptances was May 1 and all the spots are filled, therefore, it is highly unlikely that I would be taken off the waitlist this time around. It is much better to know for sure rather than wonder.

Alternatively, fewer cumulative tests can result in the mother of all cramming sessions, followed by massive amnesia...
