Hi there:

What day are you interviewing? There is a Hyatt across the street there too. Let me know what day you would be here though. I live in SD and I have an interview too.

Anything in walking distance to UCSD is going to be expensive with a capital E. If price isn't a big deal to you, there is a pretty nice hotel that is less than a half a mile walk from campus and leads directly to the medical school. I'll be driving by it today, so I'll post the name of the hotel later tonight.

There are a few hotels in the area, but most of them are on the east side of campus and none are really within comfortable walking distance. I mean, you could do it. But you'd be sweaty afterwards. Especially after walking up the hill.

There's an Embassy Suites right across from UTC (shopping mall) and I know that UCSD has a city shuttle program that goes from a UTC stop to campus. Technically, you 're supposed to flash campus ID but . . . well.

UTC also has a public bus hub and you could take the 41 or 34 onto campus for under $2. Just make sure it's headed to UCSD or else you'll end up in Kearney Mesa or at Fashion Valley.

Eh, just check out the shuttle systems UCSD has. It's under the parking section of their website.

The closest hotel to UCSD is the Radisson: http://www.radisson.com/lajollaca

It is definately walkable. You just shoot up Villa La Jolla, cross La Jolla Village Drive, hike up a relatively steep hill and you'll be just next door to the med school.

Cammy beat me to it - this is the hotel I alluded to. But watch out for that hill, it's a doozy!

thanks for the info, all of you! it is super helpful.

sorry to be a pain, but are there any hotels that don't involve a big hill, or is there a more roundabout and flatter way to approach?

thanks again!

I'm sorry, but that had to be the funniest post of all time. The hill isn't that big a deal - its probably uphill for about 200 yards or so, and then its flat ground from there. If you plan on walking to UCSD, you cant really avoid it, and the Radisson is the closest hotel. As far as i know, no other hotel is a decent walking distance away.
There are many other options if you are willing to hop on a shuttle bus. Also, are there any student-host options? That would be worth looking into, especially considering the host will have to be at school in the morning just like you.

On a similar note, what's the best way to get between UCSD and San Diego airport? How much will a cab ride be? Are there shuttles?

You can bypass this enormous hill everyone is talking about by using a bridge. On the corner of La Jolla Village Dr. and Villa La Jolla, there is a pedestrian bridge that connects the campus and the sidewalk. You can't miss it, it's right next to a restaurant called Rock Bottom. The bridge spans across La Jolla Village Dr. and leads you to the parking lot behind the med school. Just walk across the parking lot and you're at the med school. I'd just take a city shuttle though, it'll drop you right at the med school. Also you could probably take the free UCSD shuttle that goes around the city picking up students only. They're supposed to check ID's but usually the drivers are too lazy. Can't hurt to try.

Cloud 9 Shuttle: http://www.cloud9shuttle.com/
Should run you about $25 + tip.

Never done the cab thing but I would guess it would be more. With the shuttle you can book your ride back to the airport which is nice. Cabs are pretty scarce in SD but you could always have the reception call one up for you if you go that route

I'd forgotten about that bridge. Ironic, since I drive under it fairly often.

If you're gonna stay at the Radisson, the UCSD city shuttle won't be of any help to you since it doesn't stop anywhere near there (unless you wanna go uphill the other way towards Ralphs). And I've never gotten carded for the shuttle. They're typically so packed in the morning anyway that they wouldn't have the time to check every single person who got on. I'm really glad they upped the frequency during peak hours this year.

Oh, and cab fare from UCSD to the airport runs about $30-40. Get Cloud9.

Ditto on cloud nine. Cabs in San Diego are brutal.

Check with the hotel, as a large number of them have airport shuttle vans. As for getting to the school, give the bellman $10 and they'll be glad to drive you to UCSD. As for getting back, see if you can get a lift from a fellow interviewee who has a car.

Just my $0.02.

I just heard from a friend of mine that the UCSD city shuttles have started checking for student ID this quarter, routinely and regularly. So nm on taking UCSD's city shuttle.

there is a residence inn on gilman that is sort of tucked away, a very easy walk up to the medschool. its a bit of a hill but not so bad, way better than the hill by the VA hospital that others are referring to. id say 1/4 mile max. prolly pretty affordable too. i walked this route every day one summer and its not bad, five minutes at most. way better than the hyatt or mariott in the utc area, and if yure sweating it you can get on the city bus and pretend to be a student or jsut get a cheap ride up the hill

the Marriott Residence Inn is the closest ( i think <0.2 miles from the MTF where you begin the day)

Also, ask for the UCSD rate and they'll give you a discount. 🙂
