Iowa State c/o 2024

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Since they no longer do interviews (with the exception of UNL/ISU applicants), yes. In the past, decisions have gone out in early-mid February. That said, since the process has been streamlined a lot, that general timeframe might not be accurate anymore.
Thank you for your response!

Mine still says none under the application status and I got verified mid August so I’m getting kind of nervous.

It could change any day! Monday I was none, Tuesday I was in academic review, and today I’m in committee review! So I definitely wouldn’t stress yet

Did you get a notification in your email or did you just check?

I still only have cumulative GPA calculated with an application status that says none, I did submit closer to the cycle closing for my VMCAS and 10 days before cycle closing for my supplemental so I'm not really expecting anything for a handful of weeks.
Me too and I submitted mine on 9/2, verified 9/4.

Same here. I check everyday like a psycho. Status still says NONE. Only thing calculated is CUM GPA - no required science or last 45 hours as of yet.

Mine still says that my signature page and fee haven't been received (I paid online). I called admissions before the deadline and they said they had them but had a stack to put in still. 😵

Just checked this morning and my status is now committee review!! I never saw it go to academic review though. Is it supposed to always go to academic before committee review? Also does everyone’s status change? It’s getting more real now haha!

Congratulations for making it to committee review!! And yeah, that's what I'm scared about. That my status will always say "none" for months and then finally, "rejected" or something like that! Yikes!!!!! I just want to know!!!

Does anyone know what the required science GPA is this year? Mines lower than I expected for Iowa state

Not a clue. I would imagine they calculate GPAs for all applicants before they decide on a number.

Just checked and all my GPA's are calculated and status now says In Academic Review.

I really do not like how they cherry pick courses for required science GPA. Iowa's calculation really is like a boot to the gut. A few B minuses or dare I say one C+and all of the sudden - you're in the corner biting your nails in a pool of urine because you are afraid your IOWA Required Science GPA won't make the cut. :nailbiting: I really hope their academic review is just that - a review of what courses you took, course load each semester, rigor of school or program you attended etc. I hope...

Keep an eye out in the next couple of days. Mine status said none, then all of a sudden I was in committee review which could mean it’s not a super long process. We got this!

I apologize if this has been answered before but does anyone know if they have a required science GPA and last 45? I see that they have a minimum for cumulative but is this value the same for science and last 45? Just curious!

It's not stated anywhere, but I'd say that there is probably a soft cutoff established every year somewhere ~2.5 for science and last 45 hours GPAs (as opposed to the hard cutoff of 2.5 for cumulative GPA).

Sans the dropping of the GRE and interviews, the admissions process really hasn't changed much over the years, and if you look at the previously accepted stats (particularly for the older classes which have actual GPA ranges listed), you'll see that the low end of the range for all GPA categories is never <2.5. So while there's no explicit, concrete required minimum for science and last 45 hours GPA in order to be eligible to apply as there is for cumulative GPA, it's possible that there's a line drawn somewhere by the admissions committee under which most applicants are no longer seriously considered. Honestly, though, even without such a cutoff, chances of admission with a science and/or last 45 hours GPA <2.5 would be extremely slim to almost none, anyway.

I'll go ahead and tag @IowaStateCVM here, too. They'll obviously have the most correct answer.

According to my AAVMC admission requirements book, Iowa State has no required minimum last 45 GPA.

There is a minimum for the science GPA, but it’s determined yearly so I have no idea what it is. The only printed required minimum GPA in this book is for the cumulative one, 2.5.

Okay great. I’m above a 2.5 anyway for my cumulative (Also according to what I calculated for required science and last 45) but my app is currently under academic review so my science and last 45 haven’t been calculated officially as of yet. I just wanted to see what I was up against. Thanks!

🙁 the only thing calculated for me is my cumulative, status still says none. I’m trying to be patient, I’m hoping they’ll update it any day now!

In the same boat. Waiting is definitely hard, but I just think of it as at least it’s not a rejection yet! Stay strong!

This makes me feel better, I was getting concerned it was just me left who was in this boat.

My guess is they’re still calculating GPAs and working on the rack and stack. LMU said they received 1800 applications this cycle so if that’s any indication of how many Iowa received, that’s a lot to sift through!

One of the worst parts about waiting is the panic that happens out of nowhere-- "Did I do my supplemental right? I Included my retakes, maybe that made my science GPA different then if I had just included the higher grade, maybe I should have just included the higher grade instead and now I won't stand a chance, my application status will forever say none, I can't even look at my supplemental" etc. :bored:

My app was verified back on 9/10 and its showing I'm in Academic Review with my calculated GPAs as of today! My last 45 and cumulative are exactly what I had calculated out and in pretty good shape, but my required science is incredibly lower than what I was expecting. Fingers are still crossed, but now I'm not sure I'm going to make it much further in their review process...we shall see...

I think everyone is in the same boat there. They only use the bare minimum of credits for their science gpa calculation, so even if you have a dozen other As in science courses, they won’t help bolster any Bs or Cs sprinkled in your prereqs. It’s a good thing they consider 3 GPAs at least!

My required science came out to a 2.59...if everyone else is around that then great, that makes me feel a lot better. But my impression from the threads is that that is pretty low and right on the border of the past cutoffs even if my other GPAs are high. I don't think my retakes for some of the areas were taken into account do to my original courses having a higher number of credit hours. I did message them just to make sure, but I honestly don't know they will change anything. I'm still hopeful, but I'm also trying to keep my realism in check haha

Is there a certain number of applicants sent to committee review or that number does not really matter? Also, how many people are invited for an interview?

ISU doesn’t interview candidates

No interviews for those of us OOS.

My thought is that everyone that meets the GPA requirements is sent to committee review. Once all GPAs are calculated they probably determine their cutoff? But that’s pure speculation.

I emailed them and they said that approximately 2/3 of applicants make it to committee review

That’s so many. Completely forgot they no longer do interviews. Not sure how I feel about that.

No GPA's calculated yet but currently in committee review, so that's progress right?!

As someone with a lot of retakes and no #'s calculated yet, this makes me nervous.

My required science was lower than I was expecting too. My three GPAs posted today as well.

Iowa State does consider gpa for 50% of the application, then a completely separate committee that doesn’t even see your academics reviews the rest of your application. That means experiences and references are also weighted 50% in the admissions decision. If you’re nervous about your GPAs, just remember you have the same chance as a 4.0 student with little to no experience 🙂

In committee review, my three GPAs posted today as well. Was surprised by my required science like you guys were too. Was expecting it to be higher since I thought that Iowa only included the most recent grade on retakes

Don’t be nervous you got this!! Every single one of us are legit in the same boat, no matter what stage we’re at in the application. We can’t let our nerves get the better of us!

Mine still says "None", so getting pretty nervous. My cumulative GPA has been calculated though.

Exactly, no reason to be nervous! They have a very large amount of applicants to go through, so this part of the process takes lots of time. I know it's hard not to get nervous/get frustrated with waiting, I feel you there! Stay strong!

I'm in the same boat but I submitted the Iowa application very last on the 16th so I'm not that surprised mine isn't being processed yet.

Unfortunately just got the rejection for being below the cutoff for the science prereq GPA :/ My last 45 was a 3.84, and I was really hoping that would help me out. When I asked about the courses that were used, my hunch was correct that they didn't take 3 of my retakes into account. Good luck to everyone else!

That sucks, I’m sorry. Hopefully you have other schools to hear from still?

Thanks! And yeah I do have a handful of other places to hear from still, so I’m still hopeful in general. It just feels crappy (like any rejection does), but I’ll just have a glass of wine and keep my head up haha

That is so weird! On their website, they specifically say that they will take the last grade that you earned if you retook courses. Did you ask, "Why weren't my retakes taken into account? I repeated x, x, and x, and earned the grades of x, x, and x." Maybe it was a mistake? I'm so sorry this happened 🙁

According to a previous post she’s made, it sounds like there were discrepancies in the # of credit hours for some of her repeated courses. That’s probably why, unfortunately.

Anyway, I’m sorry to hear about the rejection, @melizabeth18. That sucks hardcore. But try to keep your head up for the remaining schools!

That’s about all you can do. I’m sure I have rejections coming too and you just can’t take it personally.
