Iowa State C/O 2027 Applicants

Hi all!
I am currently a VM1 (c/o 2026) at ISU and am happy to answer any questions from anyone! Congratulations to all who got accepted tonight! For those who got waitlisted - hold tight - it can be super stressful, but the waitlist for ISU really starts moving in mid/late April and they go far! I was #88 on the OOS waitlist and I was called off. To those who didn't get in, don't lose hope. My first cycle, I was waitlisted at 3 schools and denied from 15. It was so hard, but in the end, I ended up at my first choice school. Your "rejection" is not truly a no - just a not right now, or not at that school. Let yourself be upset and then take time to evaluate how you can improve your application.
If anyone has any questions, wants to discuss the waitlist, or wants to know how to improve an application between cycles - feel free to reach out!

My application status still says "in review" but I received an email as an alternate. Anyone else still says this?

Yes I was wondering what were your grades!! I think that's where I'm lacking!

I got an email saying I am an OOS alternate which is super exciting! However in the emial it states if you get pulled from the waitlist you have 10 days to either make a deposit or decline the offer. Does this only account for if you are pulled from the waitlist after April 15th or do you still have to make a decision within 10 days even if it is before the official decision day on April 15th?

As an overall applicant, my grades were definitely below average for cumulative GPA and science GPA. I can't remember exactly how ISU specifically counted my science GPA but I think it was a 3.2 (some schools actually calculated it below a 3 so pay attention to individual school requirements), my overall about a 3.3, and my final 45 about a 3.9. I did a 1 year Master's and finished that with a 3.96 so I honestly think that that significantly helped me. Fair warning though, some schools (maybe Michigan? and a few others) do not consider any graduate coursework in your application GPA so I would check with individual schools before going that route.

Has anybody seen information on an accepted students day? ISU seems to be the only school so far that is not hosting one, which I find somewhat concerning. Maybe I just missed that info?

I was an alternate and mine still says in review. I think it will likely remain that for a bit
I don’t like how when I filled out the remain form I didn’t get an email confirming my response or something like that. Did that happen to anyone else?
As of this evening my account status has changed from “In Review” to “Concluded - Alternate - Remain on Alternate List”.

Mine says concluded no response but I filled it out to remain an alternate so maybe they just haven’t had a chance to get to everyone?

Has anyone been pulled off the OOS waitlist yet? Just wondering if they have started this yet?
Last year they sent out the ranks for the waitlist on March 23. Then, they started calling off the list April 1st. I think this changes some year to year but usually it's the same general rule that it will start end of March/beginning of April.

Ohhh okay so they will not start pulling people till around April? I thought they could start pulling people anytime but this is helpful, thank you!

anyone else get an invite to preview day even as an alternate? i didn’t know they did this!
Yes. They mentioned the preview days in the alternate message Wednesday and said details would be sent in a few days.

Hi guys, totally new to sdn (literally just signed up) but this seems like a super helpful network! I just got an OOS acceptance and was wondering if anyone knows if Iowa State allows you to establish residency to pay in-state tuition in years 2-4? I've got a few acceptances and just trying to make the best financial decision at this point. Thanks!

The AAMVC Cost Comparison tool has info on which schools allow you to establish residency.

According to AAVMC cost comparison website you are unable to but I see a link on ISU veterinary medicine website about attaining residency with steps?

So I just looked online and it says the CVM doesn’t determine residency but the university as a whole does. But one of the requirements is working 30hrs a week for 12 consecutive months. Unless anyone’s trying to work an overnight gig I doubt that’s possible 😭

Right I noticed that and I thought that maybe they would make exceptions for students? I definitely can't work 30 hours a week on top of vet school, especially as a first year 🤐. I emailed them though just to clarify that, so ig we'll see.

No, it's generally not possible to switch residency in Iowa once you've started school.

They sent an email about this today, they’ll be hosting it on two separate dates on April 9am-4pm.

Who all is planning on going on April 1?! I am an in state alternate, and I plan to go. Even if I do not get in, I think it is a great opportunity to learn more and get an inside look for next year! Also, who are you all bringing as your guest?

I’ll be there! Just signed up last night. Being from California I have no idea what the Midwest looks like lol. And my mom is my guest ❤️

I'm going!

I am tempted to go, but coming all the way from NY when I am only on the alternate list makes me hesitant. As much as I would love to tour the place, I would be devastated to spend the money to go to not be accepted 😕
I believe they have tours until the end of the semester/early summer so hopefully you will get the chance to visit!
