Unfortunately it is not possible to gain residency. The requirement is 12 months of 30 hrs a week AND cannot be a student. I asked specifically the financial aid office and some of the other admins. since I'm in the same boat. (source: current ISU VM1 student)

You should be able to request a tour later when you find out if you got in for sure! I used to lead tours when I was a student and we would get plenty of one on one tour requests from accepted students before the semester started. for those debating the preview days,
I'm an oos VM1 from the Northeast and it was not financially reasonable for me to spend $400+ for a 2 day trip last year
So instead I looked at a bunch of pictures and basically did a google maps tour of the area
If you kind of know how the Midwest is structured (basically everything is spread out but Ames really has it all compared to what I'm used to; I rarely have to leave town) One of the things I really like about the CVM is that it is separated from main campus -- its easier to get the school, we have our own parking lot and don't have to deal with main campus traffic etc. The only time I ~had~ to go to main campus was to get my student ID

Yeah I actually just found this out since I emailed the financial aid office and they just got back to me today. Definitely not a situation that would work out for me unfortunately. If I could have established residency, it would be a cinch to choose to go to ISU. Honestly its more stressful to me to make a decision where to go for vet school now than it was to apply lol 😕.

I agree, I want to attend, but I also don't want to spend that extra money on a plane ticket if I am way down on the list.

Thank you for this information! It really just helped me with my decision on making the trip! I am from Virginia, so it was going to be a crammed trip!
 
For those who plan on attending ISU, a lot of people live at the trailer park right next to the school. I would highly recommend this route if you are in a situation to do so.

In terms of apartment/house hunting, my advice is to do it early. Ames is a weird realestate market where they start renting for next fall 2023 as early as Jan 2023 - 8 months in advance.

Hi! I wanted to ask if you used the school’s student health insurance? If so how did you like the coverage? I’m also out of state from CA with Kaiser but there isn’t a Kaiser in Iowa so trying to figure that out. And if you received your rabies vaccine on campus or would it be better to get it before we arrive on campus?

For health insurance, the school uses bluecross blueshield PPO. It's actually pretty good and since it's a PPO, you have many options to who you want as a provider.

Rabies vaccine, that's up to you. You can easily do it at school. I did and I believe the health insurance covers it (don't quote me on that).

P.S. I'm also from california and had kaiser.

Okay thank you! I’ll have to do some digging between the 2.
On the class of 2027 page it says the rabies vaccine is a series of 2 at $444 each. I assumed that would be billed to our student accounts on top of choosing student insurance. Again, will need to do some more digging.

P.s. I like your bio, I also like cats 😼

I was “lucky” and just got both of them “for free”, after being bit by a possible rabies cat while at work. Turned out the cat was negative but I got the shots bfr ACC send the results back.

What happens is when you get the shot, they will first go through your health insurance, and anything not covered will be billed to your student account. In other words, if the health insurance covers it all, it will never reach the student account. Hopefully that makes sense.

hey! i just wanted to say if anyone was interested in getting any of Iowa State’s CVM merch, the mugs on the college bookstore are currently on clearance for $5! They’ve also got stickers and a shirt 🙂

I had Kaiser also prior to vet school and just asked my doctor to order the rabies vaccine for me through them. They ended up covering it and I had all 3 done before coming to iowa. I just had to email them a copy of my vaccines

But I also got insurance through the school and the student center is amazing. They have great doctors and there’s a hospital here with many specialists. I had a medical scare during second year requiring surgery and hospitalization and the hospital was great.

I'm an OOS alternate for ISU so not exactly jumping onto finding housing but I was wondering if you know if there's any places someone could live in a travel trailer/camper that they might already have. Do the trailer parks have empty rental lots with hook ups or is it just already parked mobile homes?

How have you found the costs of things like food, auto insurance (if you have it), clothing and such to compare to SoCal? I moved to Washington from SoCal a few years ago and while insurance is cheaper I found food prices to be comparable and I'm wondering if there's any difference out in Iowa.

If you're willing, what is the actual cost of living amount you can get loans for yearly? The ISU website gives a figure that is different than VMCAS and I was hoping to get a better idea of exactly how much there could be to work with after tuition is paid.

On the subject of health insurance, is that something calculated into the school's calculations for cost of living?

Depends where you go for food. I feel it’s comparable but also I found local restaurants to be able to feed me for significantly less than california. just depends what you fancy annd what your lifestyle is. Also sales tax is lower here so that helps a lot. Gas out here is currently 3.29/gallon which is lower than home lol

As far as loans go, I’d say it’s dependent on what loan you get so I’m not sure.

If you get the student health insurance it’s calculated into tuition for the semester

Current VM1 (OOS) here - this (attached photo) is essentially the full breakdown of my loan from the Fall.
I took the full loan amount out which left me with the refund (cost of living expenses) of ~$5,600

i wonder if that might mean there’s a good chance they’ll release the waitlist rankings next week! that would be cool. i think someone mentioned last year it was released 3/23 and their initial decisions went out 2/15 so it might be a little early still but here’s to hoping
 
Just curious and idk if someone else has already asked this question, but for those currently at ISU, what does the application for scholarships look like (ie. when do they occur, how much does one usually get, etc.)?

I found on their website that they have a "One App" scholarship that students apply through that makes them eligible for lots of different scholarships. So essentially you don't have to apply to like 6 scholarships individually. The website didn't say what the scholarships are or for how much as we need student access info for that.
 
Is anyone going to Admitted Students day the second weekend April 8th? I had to change my date!

Yes I’m from California, 5hr plane ride! But I hope to also check out apartments and see the town/ area. It’s our spring break so my mom and I are making a trip of it lol. Hoping you are pulled off the waitlist too!!
 
does anyone know if we have certain requirements for computers or tablets? i know some medical schools do but wasn’t sure if ISU specifically did

You have to purchase a laptop from ISU (i believe it’s Lenovo). It is built into tuition costs and there is no way to waive it. At least that’s how it was last year.
 
It looks like alternate list numbers come out next week. I emailed Kathy and she said:
“We will have alternate list numbers out next week. You will get a message when they are up and they will show on your Status Page.”
Looks like it’s more of a waiting game, I just want to know ☹️

I am fully expecting it to be released on 3/31 (next Friday) and will be pleasantly surprised if it happens sooner.
 
Does anyone know if preview day will have zoom call or recordings to review? Not sure now if I can make either day but I don't want to miss anything important.

I also signed up for the one this weekend. I would anticipate to get information here any day! I know initially they told us they would reach out the week of the event.
