Kansas City University (KCU-COM) Discussion Thread 2015 - 2016

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Interviews happen more frequently than adcom meetings. The time-to-decision seems to be based on which adcom meeting your file is seen at. I also believe they send out acceptances in batches. Could be sets of alphabetical order, or that diff members of the admin committee responsible for a certain batch work slower than other. Regardless, it seems if two dates were close (SEP29 vs OCT1), acceptances can come in mixed batches. Nothing to worry about right now if you interviewed one of these days.

Ive been wondering about this for a bit... KCU has a pretty avg cost of tuition, and city isn't very expensive to live in. COA is estimated roughly the same as many other's I've seen. So why is the avg indebtedness of KCU students close to the highest among DO schools? -- Would any current students have some insight into this?

The students may be more family oriented in the midwest. Wife and kids cost money.

As a single student I probably use 1/2 the money they give me.

Thats interesting. Have you noticed a lot of your classmates having families? It would have to be significant portion to make KCU stand out like this, I would think?

Regardless, its good to know that as a single student you can put away some of the money for savings (and those hidden costs in 4th year!).

I've definitely noticed that a significant amount of our class is at least married, many with kids. As a single student, I definitely don't use the full amount either but I think a lot of students are inclined to take the full amount and just not worry about money throughout the four years. Esp for those who had to uproot and move half way across the country and front a lot of costs the first month or so until a spouse can start working again, etc. Point is, there's a lot of different reasons for financial situations. And though Century Towers is relatively cheap, there are many places downtown and elsewhere in the city that are almost double ($1000-$1500/month). Just things to consider

My advice? If you're on a gap year, work as much as possible and save as much as possible. Working full time for a year helped me SO MUCH when it came to moving costs and paying for things before loans kick in. And it's my back up for later as well.

Can someone msg me with patti number pls? Nervous I haven't heard back and I interviewed 9/24 🙁

Good news from Patti you guys, for the 9/29 group...

I texted her today because October interviewees have been getting decision letters before our group. She said that the committee for the 9/29 group met on 10/9 and that the Dean's letter should be going out tomorrow. She said we'll hear by email first, then mail, so we should get an email in the next couple of days. Extremely likely to hear this week!

I wonder why some of us haven't heard anything from 9/23 and 9/24. Has anyone that hasn't heard from this day texted Patti?

How long did it take to get an II after submitting secondary? Also, is there a way to check your status on the portal?

Does it apply to people from the 10/1 group too!?
I only heard about the 9/23, 9/24, and 9/29 groups. There is one person on this forum from the 10/1 group who has been accepted already, so I assume that that batch was mixed in with the other 3 dates I mentioned, because the committee met on 10/9. If you want a for-sure answer, you can text Patti! I can give her your number. She's nice and helpful, and she certainly doesn't seem to mind these types of questions.

She specifically said that applied to the 9/23 and 9/24 groups as well? It makes me wonder what order they review the interviews if the committee meets for people on different dates.

The person that DM'd me said that Patti told them the same thing she told me. That the committee met for those dates (as well as 9/29) on 10/9 and that the Dean's letter should be going out tomorrow. I think they have set review dates for when they look at certain interview dates. So it's very possible that 9/23, 9/24, 9/29, and 10/1 could have been lumped together for when the committee was set to meet on 10/9. They probably take all of those dates' applicants, stick them in a big pile, and review them randomly... so it's possible that a 10/1 interviewee could get a decision before a 9/23 interviewee. Frustrating, I know -____-

Interviewed here last week and was extremely impressed. KCU seems like a great school with a beautiful campus and loads of opportunities. As far as the interview itself, unlike what many people led me to believe, it was not conversational. I was asked a question, I would respond, 3-5 seconds of semi-awkward silence would follow, and then the next question would be administered. This really made me feel like it didn't go well :/ but everyone says that some interviewers are like that and it isn't necessarily a bad sign, but it definitely doesn't leave you feeling confident. Hopefully I'll hear some good news sometime in the next 4 weeks.

I know when I had my interview last week as well that there was a handful of interviewers for the group and from the way people were talking after they came out, there was one professor who was just a quiet person in general. The student ambassadors seemed unsurprised about a semi quiet interview from him. My interviewer told me that she had to just fill out a form on simple stuff like if I kept eye contact or not. I am sure they are all reported by the same criteria so no need to worry!

Everyone says that the KCU interview is more about getting to know you and making sure that you aren't weird, but I definitely felt as though I was being grilled haha. It didn't put a damper on my day though, still a great time. If you don't mind, what day did you interview last week?

Wait listed. Interviewed 9/23...not sure what put me on the wait list. I was under he impression that an interview typically means you're already being considered and the interview is just to check if you're a cool person. I know I aced my interview- extremely disheartened right now.

I was under the impression that interview is being considered but I'm sure it's also like... if u have a 4.0 and a 35 MCAT then you can almost bomb interview and theyd prob take you. But if you have low scores and you do meh on the interview you might not be as lucky.

My advice is the text Patti and ask what caused you to get on the waitlist. From the threat last year it seems that a lot of people get off the waitlist and it happens around Nov/Dec.

Best of luck~

Hey is anybody interviewing tomorrow and going straight to the airport after? I'm trying to figure out transportation.

Unfortunately waitlisted from the 9/29 interview. Still, I had an amazing time at the school, congrats to everyone who got accepted 🙂

Can anyone comment on the waitlist movement at this school? I feel like because it's such a great school, and many people's top choice, there might not be much...

Browse through last years thread and look to see when the waitlist movement started. I think thats better than anyone speculating and getting either people hopes up or depressing them.

How long does it take to get a complete email from KCU?

I got the "secondary received" email on the 9/17 and am still waiting for the complete email. I called the office today and was told that they're currently processing secondaries from 9/15 and it would be another couple of weeks.

At least this school has early waitlist movement!
