Kansas City University (KCU-COM) Discussion Thread 2016-2017

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Ya it's a lotta debt, and i'm kinda concerned about it as well but i also feel like just wanting to walk away debt free probably isn't the best reason to join the military (not saying this was your motive or anything just ones of the reasons I ultimately decided against the military). Yes it's nice to walk away from school debt free but ultimately you owe the military some time and will be compensated less than your colleagues while you are serving your time. I feel like you should only pursue HPSP if you truly want to be in the military, and when I sat down to think about it I decided that I wouldn't enjoy being in the military so I nixed the idea for myself.

I agree with this 110%. I actually sat down and ran some numbers and the only way that it financially makes sense (if your sole reason is doing HPSP is for the money deal) is if you are going to be pursuing a lower paying specialty. If you are wanting to specialize, after the years that you give the military making peanuts, you will be quite a bit behind where you would be if you would have just taken the debt and paid it off.

Money wasn't my primary desire to pursue the program, but it didn't hurt haha. I think in the end the freedom (relative of course) to choose where I do my residency and settle afterwards was worth more than not having debt.

You also gotta realize that it's not going to work out EXACTLY like the recruiters say. They are trying to recruit and are only going to tell you the "positives" of being in HPSP.

Oh I understand that and I credit the honest advice of current and former HPSPers on SDN for laying out the true negatives of the program that recruiters won't tell you. Not that they are lying, but often time they haven't had the first hand experience.

All that aside, only 34 days until orientation!

This is why I ended up getting out of it. Plus there was way too much conflict between the recruiters and the staff doing the health screenings.

My recruiter told me to lie to the physician about a past illness I had, and I thought to myself, "If I were in that physicians shoes, I wouldn't be able to do my job properly (whether screening or actually treating) if ALL OF MY PATIENTS WERE LYING TO ME."

It really irked me. I got right outta there.

@RamsFan&FutureDO the green machine isn't for everyone. Usually your gut is right when determining if you should or should not be in the military especially in regards to the Army.

You wouldn't do well in the military then. They all lie especially when the physicals are actually very stupid when in regards to combat arms.

However, if your past illness has a possibility of killing someone that is under your care while in a combat situation then you need to come to terms that you probably shouldn't be in the military. That's how you determine if you should try snaking through the physical screening process.

It was very benign, but fair enough either way. Maybe if I had a different recruiter things would have been different.

Probably. I would have suggested talking to a physician and asking if it would have jeapordized care of soldiers in unpredictable combat situations.

Recruiters are just trying to make mission by getting all their slots filled.

Mid July as in 15th-20th? I think you'll be fine as long as you're not trying to move in the 24th haha

Lol my century towers move in date is the 24th. Looking forward to all the time I'll have before orientation starts to get settled..... :--|

I noticed that we need Big Robbins on the book list. I was under the impression we didn't do patho until second year?

Nope you do the first 10 chapters of that book right at the end of first year!

If it makes you feel better I moved in the weekend before orientation with nothing but clothes and small things that fit in my car and it was honestly fine haha. My dad came with me and we bought furniture from past students and places like IKEA and Walmart throughout the week. It was nice to have my apartment to put together after orientation most days and then explore the city for dinner. Orientation really wasn't stressful, just a lot of information! You'll be fine 🙂

(Current second year)

I just got accepted to the KC campus!!!! Shoot, now I have a difficult decision to make. They have given me until Monday at noon to decide.

I had the same decision to make two years ago and am 100% happy with choosing KCU over Des Moines. I know people that know people and they feel the same way. 😉

Can you elaborate on specifics why? I love KCU but literally just got a late II to DMU and I feel like it would be a waste to not even go

DMU has some odd scheduling. The students sdont really get a fixed schedule like we do at KCU so it can be a lot harder to plan trips.

Literally got a II from DMU today as well, thought that ship had sailed long ago... def still sticking with KCU

Honestly, I'm leaning towards DMU right now but largely due to minor personal preferences. I'd love to know more about objective differences between the schools. From what I can tell their match lists and board pass rates are very similar. DMU's admissions department definitely messed something up to be interviewing this late in the game which is concerning but I'm not sure it's enough for me to discount the school.

I know I've seen people "rank" KCU over DMU on SDN but I haven't seen anyone back up why. Any resources that you guys recommend for learning more about KCU?

That must be what all the first years are stressed out about on the fb wall! Is it worth it to buy the book now or wait until the spring?

We're not stressed as much as we can't wait to be done on Monday (with some minor exceptions). Don't get me wrong, micro in 2 weeks with a pharm intro is not necessarily a pleasant experience, but it's been a long ride with no time off since March.

Is drinking heavily at 10am on a Monday a bad thing??

Only if it's a weekly occurrence

Here is a thread with thorough school reviews. I think @AlteredScale did the review for KCU. Not sure if DMU has been done, I just remember reading about KCU here:

Pros and Cons of your DO School

I know it starts in '07, but there has been activity in '16.

I ultimately picked KCU over DMU as well and it really came down to location (KC >>>>> Des Moines) and I greatly preferred how KCUs curriculum is set up in more of a systems based approach versus the traditional way that DMU's is. But really you'll be making a great choice either way I think.

Kind of a weird question, but does anyone know if they live stream the white coat ceremony by any chance? I've had a lot of friends and family from home ask if there was any way they could watch since it's way too far for them to actually attend.

Trust your gut. Go to DMU!

Did you buy furniture when you got to KC? If so, were there still a lot of students selling things like couches, lamps, TV stand, etc?
