Lake Erie (LECOM) Discussion Thread 2015 - 2016

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Congrats to everyone that has been accepted. I am an MSII who will be leaving Erie for rotations and looking to see if anyone is interested in taking over the house I renting (landlord is a graduating MSIV). The house is about 2.5 miles from the main campus and takes me very little time to get there even in the snow. The house would be perfect for roommates as their is a downstairs room with an adjacent office (probably too small to be a bedroom by itself) and their is an upstairs room with a large area next to it. The house has been recently updated by the landlord and has a washer and dryer in the basement. There is a large driveway that is big enough for two vehicles as well. Rent is $800, I could sublet it from May 15- July 15th giving you an opportunity to make sure you like the area before committing to a long term rental in an unknown area. Message me for details.
We can't move that early because of work, but I am wondering if you might have some suggestions regarding looking for houses specifically? My boyfriend and I are really trying to get a small house if we can or if not a house a townhouse...after apartment dwelling in the city for 5 years we really don't want to do that anymore 🙁

Hey guys,
So I interviewed January 8th and my portal hasn't changed to "decision made" yet. Anyone else in the same situation? Also, I've already been accepted to KYCOM, if it came down to LECOM or KYCOM which would you choose and why? (I'm interested in pursuing a surgical residency)

Hey all, I interviewed about a month ago and now am just waiting on a decision. I'm very worried because I thought the interview went terrible. I really would like to go here & hope I am not rejected. They barely asked any questions (only 2 in individual interview which was like 5 minutes..a couple more in the group interviews) so I felt like they didn't really get a chance to know me. And the interviewers give off no indication of care towards what you are saying. I answered to the best of my ability but just felt like there was so much more I could have said as I had prepared for questions way more in depth and way more difficult, ethical, etc..
I felt the same way regarding my interview. Not necessarily that it went terribly, but that the interviewers asked such tip-of-the-iceberg questions and in such an unusual format, i.e. the group interview. But lo and behold, I was accepted!

So just take a deep breath and put on your waiting shoes. I wish you the best of luck.

I felt the same way after my interview- I was also SO anxious beforehand I didn't eat anything (rookie mistake) and my stomach growled through the entire group session. I also felt like I was tripping over my words and what I was saying wasn't even making sense, and the interviewers seemed so disinterested. I, admittedly, mistook this sternness for disinterest, but it seems to be the norm at these interviews to have very stoic interviewers, so as not to show any favoritism. It's easy to take it personally and mull over every word you said over and over again, but what's done is done and I'm sure you did just great 🙂 Keep the faith and good luck!

I would check the usual places, like craigslist and zillow for listings. You want to stay in or around Millcreek township. I would avoid houses near downtown, like north of 26th street or east of Peach street. You shouldn't have too much trouble finding a house. If you have kids you really want to be in Millcreek as the Erie city school district is terrible (had to pull my kid out after about a month to be home schooled). I know that there are houses that the school owns that are reserved for residents first and students second that you might be able to be put on a list for, but I don't have any real info on that, but I know if you search here or look on facebook for the Erie Med Wives page that they have the details on that. I hope that helps.

I'm not sponsored or anything, but you might like this place. I drive past it everyday on my way to school.

Anyone staying at the courtyard mariott or Hilton and interviewing tomorrow at Erie? How are you planning on getting there? The shuttle that the hotel uses can only pick me up for 645 or 8 and we are supposed to arrive by 8.

For anyone else that is familiar with the area, will I have any trouble getting an uber tomorrow morning around 730?

How many people that interview do they typically accept? I know there's no set number obviously, but like what percentage usually?

Does a portal change mean that they sent your letter already, or just that it is ready to be sent?

It doesn't necessarily mean they've immediately sent it. They might wait until they're all collated, signed, and enveloped. It can take a couple days. I know it did for my batch. I think we had the portal change on a Wednesday, and the letters were mailed the following Monday.

This morning I woke up to "The comittee has made a decision on your application. You will receive an official letter in the mail within 30 days"... I interviewed last Friday. Does the timing of this message have any bearing?

Saw the Seton Hill interviewees yesterday-- you all looked great!

No.

I interviewed last Friday as well and my portal hasn't changed, now I'm nervous. They told us they were meeting Wednesday this week to make decisions on applicants.

Is the background check and drug screen due March 1 as a hard deadline?

That's what our registration packet said. But others might have a different packet if they were accepted earlier or later. Just make sure to look at the email and documents attached.

ETA: But yes, any deadline is a hard deadline, and no exceptions will be accepted.

From previous years it looks like alt list won't move till May, does this seem to be the case this year as well?

I believe a small part of the reason for the delayed movement is because LECOM is saving a lot of seats for their postbac students (120 of us) and the program ends mid-April. What that means is that for those who don't meet the 3.0 GPA at the end of the program will forfeit their seat and that will go to those on the alternate/waitlist. However, I know a few of my postbac classmates have already received rejection letters and two people from my study group got alternate list letters pending that they finish the program with a 3.0. Best of luck to you bro.

Hi, SDN family!

OOS interviewing at SH on 3/10!😊

I only have experience with 30 minute, panel interviews and saw that there are group, some one-on-one, and MMI style sessions for LECOM. If anyone could walk me through the length and format of the interview at SH, it would be much appreciated!

It's just a small group interview. Very casual, conversational, you take turns going around the table and answering the question/responding to other people's answers. And that's the only interview style used at SH, that's how it was for myself and I've also spoke with other applicants and students who confirmed this.

If you have an honest reason you can't meet the deadline, talk to admissions. When I was accepted a few years ago I found out my PCP had moved away, and I was unable to find a new one who had an opening before the deadline. They were able to work with me.

The key is to ask IN ADVANCE if you need an exception, though. If you ask for an extension the day of the deadline, they won't be entertained, but if you ask a week or two ahead of time and have a decent reason, they'll work with you.

That's interesting, do you happen to know the reason they're rejecting post-bacc applicants that have (or may get) the 3.0 GPA minimum?

I assume they performed poorly on their interview.

Has anyone who interviewed mid to end of January had their portal change to "decision has been made" yet? (Erie)
If so... have you received your letters yet?
Just wondering, since it has been 30 days since our interviews. wondering what this could mean, like if those who have their portals changed first are accepted and those that aren't are not or vice versa

Unfortunately, you'll have to learn the hard way like I did that there is absolutely no rhyme or reason to the portal system. I honestly wish they would do away with it if they're going to not use it to its full potential.

Think of it as practice for waiting for grades to show up (am I right, @DoReMiFaSo)? 🙂 That said, I think Erie has a different, non-portal grade system...

There's no rhyme or reason to the timing of the Portal and admissions results. Like I said several pages ago, I understand why everyone stresses over it, but you'd all be better off relaxing and watching Netflix instead.

I called admissions office inquiring about the same and they got back to me by email and informed me that they had not yet sent out decisions for candidates who interviewed January 7th (Erie Campus) onwards. She said the portal should change in 1-2 weeks to "decision made" and soon after that we should be receiving our letters with the decision made by the committee. It's been a week since she sent me that email so hopefully after this coming Wednesday's meeting, we will have a "decision made" on the "admission status" tab.

Hi everyone. So my secondary application was complete and confirmed in mid November and I haven't heard anything yet. Is there anyone out there that completed their application around this time frame who's heard anything?

I was complete in mid-late October and interviewed in December. I would advise you contact the school. They may have you marked as missing something in your app when you are set to go

Thank you. That's what I was worried about. I'm going to give them a call tomorrow.

I would recommend calling, too. I submitted my secondaries to both campuses on 12/28. I'm waiting to hear back from Bradenton, but heard back with an II for SH on 2/3.

Wishing you the best of luck, @Pickme23!

Thank you @Theobromina I appreciate it. I will defiantly give a call. Best of luck to you as well! I applied to Erie do you think that makes a difference?

Of course! I'm happy to help. I've sent an email to the admissions office at Bradenton to follow-up, too. Let's hope for the best!

From what I understand, the admissions process for both SH and Erie go through the same committee, while Bradenton is separate. I don't feel that your preference for the Erie campus would impact your application. They would definitely want you to be choosing a campus based on what's important for you and where you feel you would best succeed, i.e. learning style, location, opportunities, etc! What could make a difference though may be the availability of interviews at Erie?

I personally had SH as my first choice and also Erie as my second choice. On my portal, it says "under review" for Erie, too. I'm not sure if I need to interview at both campuses to be considered so I am right there with you on calling tomorrow. :wideyed:

Anybody know if LECOM lets you do research rotations?

I don't know how that can be possible or if you can even gain much from a rotation in research even if it was for 2 months.. it takes years to generate good data for publications.

I've heard of other schools doing it. Aren't we all supposed to do something in the summer after oms-1?

I cancelled my interview to LECOM on Feb. 26th. Good luck to everyone!

Yeah, I do remember that there are research opportunities during the summer after OMS-I. Not sure the quality of their research are like though.. you could probably get your name on a paper if you can make some contributions to the research though.
