MSII year is much more difficult (on average) for students because you have to balance the COMLEX studying with regular classwork... Depending on your pathway it will be different. I was LDP so I can tell you about that.

-Get a study group together ASAP, and figure out a schedule.

-Try to cover pharmacology, micro, pathophysiology in depth, and then do lots of questions after that and fill any holes you feel you need to. The COMLEX has very little strictly biochem/physiology/histology, mostly all pathology/micro/pharm.

-Start early, and go slow at first. Figure out a time of day you devote each day to board studying. Whether that's coming in early before lectures start, or sticking around at the school a couple hours after lectures each day. I usually crammed on the weekends for the class tests which were usually Mondays, and then did a lot of board review during the week.

-Be smart, class rank matters as well for residencies so don't totally forget about classes and get terrible grades. You need to balance both, and classes WILL help you with the boards even though it's frustrating when you have clinicians starting to come in that talk about some pretty detailed stuff for 3-5 hours...

-The COMLEX is a fairly "random" exam, in that you never really know how your going to do... I think if you study hard you can gaurantee you're going to do well, but it takes a little luck to get over a 600... For most specialties they don't care what you get as long as you pass (FP, Peds, general IM). Other specialties want you to do decent (Anesthesiology, Surgery, ER). And then some specialties want you to do really well (Radiology, Ortho, Derm).

I have been accepted into PBL Erie so I have been looking into housing around the school trying to find somewhere to live but I have a question. With the PBL students moving to the Bayfront Building, would it be better to find something closer to there rather than the main school building? I assume we will all be at the main building for the first 12 weeks for anatomy but then I think I would be spending most of my time in the Bayfront Building....

I currently live at Landmark square, it's about a 10 min drive to campus and a 5 min drive to the bayfront building. Lived here two years now, no complaints
 
Hi all
So I got accepted back in october for LDP. I was wondering when i should start looking for housing. I did request to be put on a roommate list so i was just going to wait for that. should i start looking now? and if i should look now, what is one of the nicer places relatively close to the school and not to far from grocery etc.

Plenty of places. Are you interested in a roommate? Do you need to live right across from the school or is a three minute drive acceptable?

I didn't have an apartment lease signed until around april or so.

A roommate would be good but i'd rather have a place secured and then find a roommate rather than finda roommate then a new home 🙂 and either is fine i just want it to be relatively new or in really good shape. and a garage is a plus but not required. any insight would be greatly appreciated!!

Try http://www.malenodevelopment.com - Scenery Hills is located right on W. Grandview near the school and they have garages. Other Malenos are around too. They can be a little pricy though.

I live in Royal Villa - Kolb Realty. 600/month for a 2BR. No garage though.

Just got off the phone with Landmark. Minimum 3 month lease. Not too bad, but they only rent the larger 2 beds and they charge an extra 100.00 for the privilege of short-term.

Any other suggestions?

Why only Month to Month? I know some hotels do week to week or even day to day if you are really afraid of commitment (sorry, had to say it). Why would that be a concern of yours? My biggest concerns are location, parking, cheap, nice, warm and maybe a garage. It never crossed my mind to consider leasing month to month when we are spending a solid 4 years there.

Anyone who's a current student know of any two or three-bedroom apartments with garages, that are dog friendly, and that aren't ridiculously expensive? I don't mind a five or ten minute drive. The dog is a small one, an eskie that's under twenty pounds.

This is too funny. some hotels do day to day! Ha! That's it, come find me at the waterpark.

But serially, I'd like to be able to make a move when the right place comes along. There are some really great deals now and then if you can take advantage of 'em.

I know of Carrollwood townhouses that are 3 BR and I think around $1000/month. You may have to drive a ways to get a good place. Why not look for a house? I was looking for a 3 BR place and couldn't find anything good and cheap so I got a house. We pay $895/month but we don't have a garage. Try craigslist or the Erie newspaper online (this is what I did). The good neighborhood's are around the school. A good rule of thumb is to stay west of State St. and south of 26th st. East Erie is the "bad" area.

I agree. The past two weeks since return from Thanksgiving has been hell but it has totally paid off. The OPP practical was pretty easy. Now all that's left between me and two weeks of freedom is my H&P practical tomorrow and I heard it was pretty easy. Good luck on the finals.

How was your "two week" break? Every second year I've talked to said they haven't done anything since Thanksgiving. Sometimes I can't wait to be in second year. Then I realize that I'm glad I don't have to take boards this summer haha.

I'm definitely waiting until after the holidays. I'll have a full three weeks of break left - Plenty of time for the paperwork. I'm just worried about how many trips it's going to take to get my immunizations up to date.
 
Hello future classmates..I was accepted a month ago and I am really excited. Is anyone worried about the weather. I am from Florida but I liked LECOM a lot. I know a lot of you have lived around the area, so please do assist!

The weather really isn't that bad up here. It gets pretty cold and snows quite a bit, but you get used to it. I think the worst part of winter here is when the snow actually melts. Everything is soggy and muddy and gross. On the brighter side, the summers are much nicer here I think. I can't deal with 100 degree weather and 100% humidity though...

The documents from LECOM say yes, men will be shirtless for OMM. True or no? Strict shirtless policy? The prospect is terrifying for a 35 yo married male. 😳

When you work on the thoracic region it is shirtless for the guys and sports bras for the women

Pants are optional

Yes its true but no you shouldn't be worried about it. There is a variety of body types and you're not going to be in a room full of Mr. Universe contestants. The first shirtless experience was awkward but you get used to it very quickly, to the point where you don't even hesitate to yank off your shirt and pants for Cervical spine OMM.

What are you doing where you need to take off your pants for cervical spine? Is there something going on in the 1st years class that we should know about?

Well since everything in the body is connected by fascia, then doing myofascial release on the knee should provide some sort of comfort for a person with cervical problems. Haha jk. I think our class just likes to take our pants off. I think it stems from the days when we would change into anatomy lab clothes in the locker rooms in front of everybody. We study hard so why not show off our doughy physiques?
 
Received acceptance letter November 4th-ish, but didn't look up forum until now.

Question: When should I get serious about looking for an apartment? I'm from Texas and I kind of want to be there when I find a place to live.

Hey... just a couple of things I've discovered...

(1) you solely have to CALL by March to make an appt (I made mine for June)...

(2) those searching for a background check (this can be quite arduous, thank you NYS!) ... for me, I could get one through NY but it would cost me ~$70 :wow: ... I called security (seeing as they didn't provide any "attached" info as stated in the packet) ... and I told him it was cheaper to go through FBI and if I could do that instead ... he said yes, it was fine.... Thus, if you live in NY-- I would advise against the NYS check of ~$70 and go for the FBI one of $18.

(3)Also... go for it NOW... takes approximately 10 weeks... and we all know how government can be!

Best of luck to everyone... only a few more months before I leave NY :laugh:

I did the FBI check too, as a CA resident no other choice. I'm hoping that I'll get the results back before the March 1 deadline. Anyone know how strict LECOM is about getting the background check by March 1?

If I recall, I think the Mar 1st deadline was just for the physical.... Hmmm... yes, just looked at the page... the way I'm interpreting it is the bold SEE NOTE for history, physical and immunization status lists Mar 1, 2009 at the bottom... the rest, by matriculation.

Which brings me to another thought... anyone else note that it's odd to have the PPD done within 6 months while still needing to turn in the papers by Mar 1 ... (what I'm thinking here is the need for multiple appts to secure appropriate titers if needed and to have PPDs read, etc, etc!)... I don't plan to go once, get the PE, go again for PPD and blood work, and return again to complete it all... lol...

Oh well, glad I have this "headache" is you will!!! :nod:
 
I have been luck with the shots so far because the hospital I work for provides the shots for free and I received them in July. The physician I went to talked for two hours about how great the Doctor of Osteopathy degree is and some highlights in the field of medicine from his perspective.

Then I just looked up the background check for Arkansas. $20.00 and results in 10 days. The information it gives is limited though so I am going to call the college and get clarification on the specific information the require.

JRod, Arkansas' background check worked just fine for me. It shouldn't be a problem.

They told us we had to have our stuff in by March but it wasn't a big deal if you didn't have it in by then. Just make sure you have everything done before orientation, otherwise you will be waiting around all day on a Saturday in lines to get your info updated. Also they can't expect you to get everything in by March if you have to get new shots and whatnot. Don't stress the double PPD test either. Just get one done and then do it again a week later. The physical and immunization form is a pain in the butt but once you have it done, you will feel great.
 
Any current students know if electronic books are available? To save money, a friend at another DO school got e books for free from his school!!! Any thoughts???!! 😉 Would be appreciated.....
 
For the TB test, does any one know if both tests need to be within 6 months or is it OK if the second one is but the first one is just a like two weeks more then 6 months. :scared:
