LECOM - Erie Discussion thread 2008-2009

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I noticed on the website that there are 4 main pathways for medstudents to choose from -- does anyone know how this actually works, and how you can get selected (or choose) which one you want to do? I'm most interested in the primary care physician's pathway (3 years), but how would they know this, and how do people get selected for each pathway? Also, do these different tracks apply to both campuses (Erie and Brandenton)? Sorry for the billion questions. Any responses are greatly appreciated, thank you.

All I know is that Erie has the 4 pathways, but Brandenton only has PBL.

Hope that helps somewhat

At LECOM-E you put your request for a pathway during your interview day. When they decided to accept you your request for a pathway does not factor in to their decision. If you are offered a seat they then look at your pathway request and decide what pathway you will get.

Individuals who want PCSP will be selected after the Anatomy module is completed.

LECOM-B is only PBL

Thank you very much for taking the time to respond, Milamber. As we all know, medschool students are very busy people 😉 And sorry to be so ignorant about this, but what is the anatomy module? Is it a class? And do you have any idea of statistics or how selective it is to get into PCSP? Thank you very much.

So I know that applicants can get interviews without first completing their pre-reqs (such as a credit of ochem), or having the mandatory DO letter, but does anyone know if LECOM offers acceptances to applicants without the manadatory DO letter with the contingency of recieving it before the matriculating fall (like acceptance with contingency of completing a required pre-req credit)?

Thank you.

This is similar to what I asked before. The secondary makes it seem like you need the DO letter to even submit it.

That would be a rediculous condition of acceptance though.

"We think you're good enough to join this medical school, but its contingent upon finding a doctor to suck up to if you want to get in"

Did you already submit it without it?

As an aside, I was looking on the LECOM-Erie website, and found this page: http://www.lecom.edu/prospective.php

With this picture:

That girl looks like shes going to kill the kid.

Well I know of applicants who've gotten interview invites without the DO letter of rec, with a stipulation that the final decision would be withheld until after receiving that letter, but since they allow acceptances without completed pre-req coursework (with the contingency stipulation) I was just wondering if the same would apply for the letter requirement...

Yeah it does seem a little ridiculous, especially considering my personal statement centers around a specific shadowing experience :/

No, I haven't submitted it yet... I don't even have a clinical LOR yet but apparently I should be submitting my AACOMAS anyway, I'm just too chicken to click that button.

Oh definitely you should submit aacomas. Its going to take a while to be verified anyway. I don't have the LOR but I submitted a while ago and am filling out secondaries anyway.

I think I'll call LECOM's admissions tomorrow to see if I can submit it without specifying who the LOR is coming from.

At LECOM-E. Anatomy is for the first twelve weeks. This year it is from the beginnig of the school year throught Oct 21st. During the first 12 weeks all the LDP, ISP, and PCSP students are together only pbl doesn't attend class. It is after this that the pathways separate. I think there are only 8 or 12 spots for pcsp and you have to have a certain gpa to be part of the program. Along with anatomy in the 1st twelve weeks you also take embryology, histology, medical ethics, and healthcare management.

Mozart how can you surf SDN when Dr. B is giving a riveting lecture on the thorax forum....

PCSP or Primary care scholars program is fairly competitive. They reserve 8 spots for those that are interested in completing med school a year early with a years less tuition to pay and living expenses ($50,000). It is nice if you are sure that you only want to do primary care. If you are not completely set on something within primary care then I would say it is not for you. I considered it for a while, but then discovered that I have an interest in EM and may not become a PC doc. There are also some stipulations that come with the program, for example, you won't get elective rotations (like orthopedic surg) or rotate at any sites that don't specifically invlove the primary care specialty, such as subspecialties of internal medicine(cardiology, pulmonology). Basically it is Family medicine, Ob/gyn, Psych, Peds, and general internal med. But if you are sure, then it is a great program to get you in and out. I have a friend that is in the first class of PCSP and he is loving it and will be starting to rotate later this year. The website will have even more info if you are interested.

What some people don't know is that our anatomy class is accelerated this year. Last year the anatomy program ended right before thanksgiving break, and this year we'll be finished mid-october. So I have a feeling that this level of studying was pretty similar between all MS1's. Let me rephrase that - similar between all the MS1's that passed the first exam.

Time is of the essence this year!

Not that this really matters, but ours was 12 weeks last year just like yours. Ended mid October. We had already had a few Core exams by Thanksgiving.

I'm going to be interviewing at LECOM on Friday and I was wondering if any current medical students (or people with my same interview date) would like to get together to have dinner or hang out sometime during my stay. Any takers?

Depends on the weather if its warm friday night we'll probably all be at coconut joes/boardwalk on state street. If not probably at the plymouth on the corner of State street and 11th.

Are there any current LECOM-E or B students doing the PBL pathway that could comment on their experiences? After reading the description on their website, it sounds pretty intriguing..

I guess to be more specific, how much of your time studying is totally self-directed? Do you feel like your learning the same material and at the same level as the lecture based pathway? Do you dislike the fact that you must be in class because its a small group or do you enjoy it because of the cohesiveness? How much of a role do the facilitators play?

I always imagined myself learning this material in a lecture hall, but now I'm starting to think I would do much better with clinical examples to keep all of the info organized mentally. Comments on PBL?

PBL is great so far and I think that I will really enjoy it once Anatomy is finished. During the first twelve weeks of anatomy they do what is called PBL light, which only covers 4 different cases each three weeks long, and we meet once a week for two hours. After anatomy we meet 3 times a week and cover a lot more material. All of it is self directed besides the information that is given in the case. As a group you will examine a hypothetical patient and from the events that occur during the case study you derive your own "learning objectives", i.e. chapter 5 of Medical Biochemistry and medical genetics(what is pertinent to the case), equaling somewhere around 100 to 120 pages per case once anatomy is over(right now it is only 60-80 pages). For the exams we will be tested on the material that we assigned ourselves to study. The profs from that particular area of study will write the test questions in the format of the board exams.
We actually dive into things much quicker than the Lecture based students because we immediately are looking at a variety of subjects rather than taking one at a time, in a sequential fashion. I enjoy it because of both the cohesiveness and the fact that I don't have to be in the classroom all day. I would go crazy. The facilitators take a pretty laid back approach in all of it unless we start to really fall away from the relevant info. They of course present the necessary tid bits relating to the patient and their history but that is about it. We do all the rest. It really is fun and it makes you think about things clinically from the get go. If you are able to study on your own for extended periods of time and understand things without someone else explaining it to you, then PBL is a great choice.

I was recently accepted in the PBL for Fall '09 and during the interview we did a very accelerated (and more simplistic) version of a PBL session. It was really interesting and they were saying that PBL students have a higher Comlex pass rates then the lecture based pathway. But there could be many other reasons for that so I woudlnt look to into the numbers. In choosing pathways, I just thought about how I best learn and went with that.

HI everyone!

I received an email from LECOM today saying that my secondary application and letters of recommendation had been received. They also said that my file would not be reviewed until it was complete, does that include courses as well? I have sent everything and I have all of the requirements except 2 credits of orgo which I am taking right now, will be done in December. Will they wait to review my file until those grades come in? I have already completed 6 credits of orgo, with a 3.75 GPA for organic chemistry. Isn't that enough for them to know that I understand orgo and will be fine in the lab?? Thanks for the info!

Maybe that was just a generic disclaimer, and if you know yours is complete, you shouldn't worry about it. However, I can't say that for sure, so you should call and ask them to look at your file and see if it's considered complete.

I have an interview at LECOM this week 😍. Anyone know if they are opened or closed file? On the interview feedback site, there is some disagreement.

I guess what I mean by I 'know' I am complete is that they have received my letters of rec, my supplemental application and my payment. All I am missing, like I said, is the 2 credits of Orgo....which I am taking right now. I will probably call the admissions office on Monday, I feel kinda bad emailing Amy again, becuase I have already done so twice (about different issues) and I have not heard any response from her. I know she is busy, but I find that calling gets you the info you want MUCH faster!

I interviewed this past week, and it was closed file.

For those who has interviewed or has been invited for an interview....

After you called and confirmed the interview date with Colleen, did you get any email confirmation or package sent? I'm just curious, since that's the only school that hasn't sent any confirmation of my acceptance for an interview on that specific date.

I'm in LDP and not PBL but I do want to say that all the stuff we learn is clinical as well. I think incoming students sometimes get confused about this. It is organized differently, but most of our lectures have clinical examples, some teachers present a case and ask us questions, etc...And our exam is again almost entirely clinical scenarios, like the PBL exam questions are presented as well. LDP is not just a constant barrage of facts w/o clinical situations brought into the mix as well. Hope that helps some people!

Nope. No confirmation or package sent. My interview is on the 25th.

I saw the interviewees with Dr. Bell hovering behind them as I left the library... it was kinda funny since I was doing what they are doing now, last year.

I just got an e-mail today for an interview invite on November 7th! That seems reallly far away.....I hope I get accepted. I'm really interested in this schooool!

Any other fellow intervieweees interviewing on that date?

Hey so the DO letter with the supplemental application has to include the waver and be sent from the DO himself? He can't give it to me and I send it along, or send it electronically for that matter?

I got my email for an interview on November 3rd.....day before (monday) election day.....

Anyone else interviewin that day?? feel free to message me..

Any one else been having trouble getting a hold of admissions. I've sent e-mails about once a week since i have an interview on October 1st. The website says my LOR are not in but I sent them certified mail and i know they are. I've gotten no response from Rowe in the last 2 weeks after having no trouble a month ago,

I would say keep trying, remember the school has over 4K applicants for 250 seat's so keep trying and don't get frustrated. The admissions committee has 1,000's of people to deal with so please be patient.

Dr. Moore usually responds to any email I send him within an hour or two, sometimes sooner if I email him in the morning. I can't wait for my interview on halloween, gonna bring my interviewers some candy. Come in with an orange suit lookin like an African American pumpkin. Or I might do the Joker thing and buy a purple suit with the make up. It's a toss up at this point.

I don't have an interview or anything yet since I just completed the secondary last week, but I have tried to contact Amy three times and I have gotten no response! Maybe we were given the wrong email address?? IDK!

Maybe you guys can help me though...Last week I received a reciept of my secondary being received (they also got my 3 LORS) and the email says that I will not be considered for an interview until my file is complete. Besides 2 credits of orgo my file is complete, and I will finish this orgo class in December.... WIll they wait to review my file until Dec or can they look it over without this requirement? I think I am going to call admissions today and talk to someone about this, but any thoughts?

INTERVIEW!!!!! NOV 13th! Yeah BO :woot::woot::woot:

I'm interviewing tomorrow, guys!!!!!🙂

Good luck tomorrow on your interview. If you see stressed out students thats only because us first years have an anatomy practical on friday and exam on monday.

for those of you who have been accepted or otherwise given a notification of your decision post-interview, how long after the interview did you hear back? and in what form?

thanks!

Two weeks from interview date; snail mail- although it was postmarked for 11 days after the interview, so it will depend on where you are.

Anybody else going to be interviewing on Friday the 3rd?

Also, can any current LECOM students tell me about the PCSP program application process. Do you apply after you have been accepted or do you need to notify the school beforehand or on the inewrview day? I am pretty much set on Peds and this prgoram is something that would def put LECOM at the top of my list.

You let them know during the interview day and you won't actually have to worry about PCSP course work until the end of the 1st year because up until that point everyone is taking the same courses.

Hmmm. Well I called Amy Rowe and was confirmed complete two weeks ago. Now I go log on to check my status, and the whole box with the "Folder Items" has disappeared. Has this happened for anybody else?

I really do not feel like trying to call them again, as getting ahold of anybody in admissions is an epic endeavor. Literally took me a whole week, calling three times a day to actually speak with somebody in admissions...I just wanna make sure this isn't simply some sort of browser error before I start making numerous phone calls again. Any help would be appreciated.
