LECOM - Erie Discussion thread 2008-2009

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
So I just received an interview on Feb. 5th. I was wondering if I should try calling them and getting an earlier date or if I should be fine with the day I have. My worry is that my chances of getting in will decrease if I wait until Feb for my interview. What do you guys think?

It doesnt hurt to try so why not.

So I got one of these on their portal:

The Admissions Committee has made a decision on your application. You will receive an official letter in the mail within 30 days.

I wish they could just tell me online. Oh well.

so I've got a random question about LECOM-Erie for the current students reading this thread...what's the student body like? Do people hang out post-exams to celebrate? Are there social events either organized by the school or by students outside of school? Any school traditions? (for example, some schools have talent shows or formals or silly things like that) I really couldn't get a feel for the community atmosphere during the interview day (probably because we were stuck in a conference room). It's just that, at other schools, I had more interactions with students and could tell that students typically got along well and hung out outside of studying. Soooo, what can you guys tell me about LECOM in that respect?

Stapler,
I would call them; they are usually able to reschedule you to an earlier time if they have spots open. It is worth a try... February is getting a bit late.

I go out to eat with friends a lot when studying, especially on weekends, even if it's a quick sub at Wegmen's or going to get a steak at Texas Roadhouse. After exams a lot of us go pre-game, hit the bars, ect. There's about 170ish of us, so you'll find someone else who enjoys doing what you would like to do. (250+ when you're in anatomy)

Hey Whateva,
It usually isn't 30 days; they say that to give themselves time in case something happens, but usually it is quick when that shows up on the portal. I think they want it to be a nice presentation with a signed letter and all, not just an impersonal email; but I know what you mean about the wait.

I finally got my acceptance letter in the mail today after waiting a whole month for the admissions committee to respond. WooHoo!

At my interview I ranked the pathways in this order:
1. PBL - Erie
2. PBL - Seton Hill
3. LDP

LECOM said that I was accepted into LDP. They also said, however, that a) I could accept the LDP offer and be placed on a waitlist for PBL or b) go to Seton Hill for PBL.

Does anyone have a pros and cons list of attending Seton Hill? Any advice? I'm pretty sure about doing PBL instead of LDP.

I also got the same exact acceptance and am most likely going to the Seton Hill campus. I am driving down to the campus on Thursday just to make sure I like it and then I am going to send back my response...One pro is there will be less snow because it is not in the snow belt and I like Pittsburgh better than Erie because Erie is so small. So I am glad that I will be close to such a great city like Pittsburgh.

Yeah its annoying, but I got my letter in the mail 7 days after my interview (5 days after getting that message on the portal).

Thats awesome to know 👍

I'm not a student there, but when I went there for my interview it seemed like a friendly atmosphere. I talked to a current student there, and they all go out after exams...so they seem to manage to fit in there fun. I dont know what type of impression the rst of you guys got, but it seemed like a school that cares and they monitor how you do on practice board exams. What did everyone else think?

So I interviewed last Monday and my application should be coming up for review on Wednesday. This is assuming that my D.O. letter will get to Interfolio by tomorrow so I can send it electronically by Wednesday. I'm gonna go ahead and figure the letter won't be in before the applications are reviewed this Wednesday. Will it look bad or affect me negatively if my letter is not in right away and my application has to be held for a week or two before it can be reviewed?

not in the least...at least that was my personal experience. My D.O. letter was sent in after committee met for my week..they gave me an acceptance with the next batch of interviews the following week. Good luck!😀

Thanks for the input.
Does anyone know the chances of getting into PBL - Erie if I'm on the waitlist for it? My acceptance letter said that PBL at Erie was already full but that I could be placed on the waitlist for it OR that I could just do PBL at Seton Hill.

Ditto--for my wife 😉 If anyone has any insight on this it would be appreciated.

Undoubtedly there will be some movement as time goes on... it depends upon where you are on the waitlist whether or not you will be ultimately offered a spot. You should hope to hear something after December 15th.

I just got accepted to LECOM!! I was just wondering if anyone knew how early you needed to start looking for apartments and if there were any recommendations on where to look.

So I just received an email saying a decision has been made on my application. Hopefully I hear something by early next week. The only bad thing is I found out AACOMAS revised my application and they decreased my gpa by almost 0.5 on my science and cumulative gpa. I am in the process of retaking classes this semester and next semester so I listed the bad grades as having been retaken. AACOMAS originally accepted it but I think they revised it. I have a bad feeling this is gonna cause me to get rejected. Well good luck to all those that are waiting to hear from LECOM!!!

I was just wondering if anyone else is going to the Seton Hill campus for the Problem Based Pathway because I am!!

Guys! Behavioral science requirement. Religious Studies classes count towards it, RIGHT?

Guys and gals who are or were in the same position: I was complete with both LECOM Erie and Bradenton about 1.5 months ago and still no interview invite. The website still reads "your file is complete and under review by the admissions committee; you will be notified when a decision is made". Am I being too anxious and/or freaking out for no reason? Is it still early enough for an interview invite?

My app wasn't complete until mid january of last year. I interviewed in march was accepted about a week after my interview and I should be studying for my micro test right now...

Don't worry your ok

I cancelled my interview for December 12 yesterday so if someone wants to push up their interview date you should call on Monday and see if that date is still available.

I'm having a hard time deciding if I should put down that deposit for LECOM. I'm mainly concerned about the rotations. Does any mind tell me how the rotations are?

I was wondering this too. I posted a thread in the osteopathic student forum. Hopefully it gets some replies!

Yeah, I'm about 90% sure that I'm going to the Seton Hill campus. I just need one or two questions answered and then I'll turn in my deposit!

Is it just me or has Amy Rowe been a bit harder to reach through email nowadays?

In September she would answer her emails the day after. Now she doesn't answer them at all, lol.

It is [email protected], right?

Yeah, I think that is the email. I don't know when peak application "season" is, but I'd imagine she has way more emails flooding her inbox..good luck!

Does anyone know who to make the matriculation fee payable to? Should it just say LECOM or Office of Admissions?

I would put down "LECOM" along with "Attn: Amy Rowe" as a note on the check and on the envelope. The address the envelope is sent to should have "Office of Admissions".

Just do what it says on the bottom of the address form you need to sent it with.

I am sorry if this question is already posted somewhere in this forum, but does anybody know what the dress code is for LECOM? I know its business casual but can you get away with wearing scrubs like you can at some other schools?

I was told at the Interview that you are not allowed to wear scrubs to lectures, only to the OMM labs, where you can wear anything anyway.

No scrubs are allowed except for OPP days but even then you have to wear shorts underneath. Also, on those days, you have to change back to dress code for the afternoon.

Dress code is in effect during the day from 8-5, so unless you have opp you have to abide by it. Evenings and weekends you can wear whatever you want.

Men have to wear a dress shirt, tie, slacks, and shoes. Women have a more liberal dress code basically just consisting of "professional attire".

Business casual is not scrubs... and it's not business casual... it's professional dress. From 8am to 5 pm. Shirt, tie, pants, etc. Scrubs.... not a chance.

When I withdrew I never got a confirmation. Maybe a month later I logged into the Portal and found out that indeed I was withdrawn, like I requested.

Speak of the devil; I just withdrew. Let's see how that goes, lol.

Maybe this is poor form for a first post but here goes...

I had applied pretty much everywhere in Ohio at MD schools but with the economy the way it is my fiancee probably won't be able to get a job after graduation (graphic design) so all of a sudden my choices became pretty limited, as in, none really. The one exception is LECOM because my grandparents left us a house in conneaut so i'd be able to live rent free.

so pretty much i need to do whatever it takes to get in, any advice?
I have a 3.39science and cum GPA that won't move much either way since i have 150some credits, and i got a 30N on the mcat. i only have around 50 hours of volunteer work at a hosptial because i've had to work 15 hours a week while at school. i have no real shadowing yet but i just got the number of a DO doctor my mom (an MD) is freinds of a friend with so that will at least help. my primary app hasn't finnished processing yet so i still have some time. do you think my stats are good enough to get an interview? i'm hoping to be able to shadow soon and try to get a letter of rec but the hours might not be there before a secondary is due.

Your stats look pretty good. In fact they are better than mine when I applied in 06. The only thing that might be holding you back is the fact that you're a little late in the application cycle.

I suspect that you'll be just fine. You may not get PBL or ISP because you're behind, but you should get in.

I agree; those are fairly good stats (above the average MCAT and the GPA is right at the average) and more than likely enough to get you an interview. However, whether or not you are actually accepted will depend upon your interview.

Yeah man that pretty much describes my application too (3.44 sGPA, 30P mcat), roughly same hospital volunteer hours (and same work excuse) so I'd say you definitely have a good shot. Just get everything in as soon as possible.

By the way, they invited me to interview before recieving my DO LOR, so its not necessary to get the interview. You just need to submit it otherwise they won't actually review your application after your interview until its in.

exactly my case as well

Just a note... withdrawing my spot in PBL-Erie... Good luck to everyone! :luck:

withdrawing as well (LDP). It was a very hard decision tho!

I just withdrew my acceptance too. I was in the lecture pathway.

I wish you all well

Question for those that have successfully applied: Do I have to send them official MCAT scores in addition to what's reported on my AACOMAS application?

When I check online to see which items have or have not been received, it shows "MCAT complete" and a red "x" indicating that they have not received the scores?!

Confused and hoping someone may be able to clarify.

*AACOMAS

No, you don't need to send them any MCAT information; it's forwarded to them by AACOMAS as long as you released the scores to them. If it shows that you're missing the scores and you're sure they should have it, email/call them to clarify. 🙂

Thanks for the clarification.

I did indeed release my scores to AACOMAS (edited previous post in which I referred to the "other" application service). I was confused seeing that item was marked as incomplete—I thought they ought to be able to take the numbers from the application.

Anyhow, thanks again. I'll email Amy.

I just got my letter today and I was accepted into LDP!!!!!!!!! I'm going to med school next year!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I think that you're probably ok. They had the red x next to one of my LORs, but I sure that they had it. I called them, and the lady found it. They had just not updated my portal yet. She updated it like an hour later. Then, a few days after that I got an interview invite. Good luck!
