LECOM - Erie Discussion Thread 2009-2010

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
My interview is on August 25th! I will be preparing for it by looking at the 9 questions that are listed over and over again in the feedback. I am hoping I get these 9 and only these 9 questions. It is stated that they have changed this routine, although a lot of people are still getting the same 9 questions

I got my interview for Aug 25th too!!

Where are these 9 questions? That would def help a lot!!

Search some of the older posts for LECOM-Erie as I believe there is a post that says that those questions are no longer in use. I believe it was mentioned on the INterview Feedback site as well in someone's review.

It really isnt a big deal if it's the case. Most school's want to know the same thngs about you and while it is nice to see the questions I am not really trying to obsess over it, as I think it would be a detriment.

Be natural.

It all varies. For example, even when someone posted they are no longer used, a bunch of people on the interview feedback listed the exact same questions again, and only those. Thus, they might throw in one or 2 new ones, but usually its still the same list.

Yeah, you're right. That's what I meant by most school's use the same types of questions & they want to know the same stuff. I'm sure most of the questions are the same

Just use the recent interview feedback to prep you. At my interview they had a sheet of questions they just kept filling in. I don't know if it was 9 questions, but it wasn't anything way out in left field.

Not sure if anyone has noticed, but there library closes at 11pm. Is there any place on campus that is open 24/7 maybe to study ??

Also, are there any particular questions you guys are asking at your interview? I just looked at the website and I feel like they have a ton of information on their site. Of course, I BRIEFLY skimmed the catalog, so I'm hoping theres no vital information in the catalog that I end up asking at the interview? Let me know if theres something fascinated written in there that someone might have read. Thanks

Doubt it, considering it is not really a campus & they are so strict about things and where people can go.

The cafeteria is open til midnite. I was in there on Thursday nite until 12:05 and my friends were in the library until midnite. Honestly everyone talks about how strict LECOM is but it's not that bad. The dress code isn't a big deal and the no beverages/food outside of the cafeteria hasn't been a problem. We have class for 50 mins and then a 10 min break. During the break we just BS and socialize. I prefer to eat or drink when I study so I just go to the cafeteria. There is a lot of room available. OPP/OMM days are interesting because we can wear cotton shorts and t-shirts to class, but then we have to change back into dress clothes after lunch. It's just funny seeing everyone so casual when we are used to seeing each other dressed up. Any others questions, go ahead and ask or PM me. I love being at LECOM. We have a great first year class. Everyone is super helpful to each other and we have a bunch of us that go out on the weekends or to someones house

I hope you guys do well.

LECOM is my #1 choice, I'll be applying there next AACOMAS cycle.

Is there anywhere I can find what kind of stats they look for?

Thanks for the info. What kind of curriculum are you in? PBL, Independent, etc.? Do you find that those in PBL develop a pretty strong bond and end up studying together a lot as well as when they have to meet with the facilitator, or students just study/read on their own?

I'm LDP. PBL wouldn't work for me because I'm not a big textbook reader. I learn better in lecture anyways. The PBL kids have developed a bond somewhat. They have only done a few PBL sessions. During the Anatomy core, PBL is considered PBL light. They have histo and embryo with LDP and ISP and then do anatomy on their own. I have quite a few friends here who are PBL. The common theme is that PBL students like to study every so often with LDP students so they can learn the stuff LDP students hear in class. If you haven't heard already, the PBL students aren't doing gross lab. They have a computerized cadaver lab where they watch CDs to learn gross. I'm not too sure of how the program is since I am LDP but I think they are similar to the UMich anatomy videos. The PBL students do a lot of studying when us LDPers are in class.

so if ur in LDP, u have class M- F, 9 - 5 ? How often are the exams, do people zone out during class? I do prefer lecture rather than independent studying, but i just feel that 50 minute lectures from 9 - 5, i d just be too exhausted to study afterwards, and I m sure that you need to study later after class. I heard that they remove internet access in the lecture hall is that true? what are facilities like at LECOM- E, is it possible to apply to LDP and PBL and perhaps pick PBL first and then change to LDP?

In LDP, there is pretty much a test every week and people definitely zone out/do other things (case in point - i am in lecture right now - they have internet filters but only block certain things). Generally, there isn't 8 hours of lectures every day (you end up having labs and other stuff).

The school is nice, you really only go a few places in the building anyway - lecture hall, anatomy lab, library, and cafeteria. The new wellness center is really nice and makes it hard NOT to go work out.

You can apply both, but PBL is harder to get in to than LDP and once you are in (especially now with no anatomy lab) it is harder to switch back to LDP - but it is possible after anatomy is over. Once anatomy is done all the pathways really get going.

Basically the sense i m getting from everyones posts is that LDP will tell u exactly what u need to know for the exams, it sucks to be in class, but u wont have to be guessing when ur studying compared to PBL and ISP? Do people just do PBL and then go to 3/4 of the lectures during the week, so that they kinda get the benefit of both systems, and dont have to deal with all the lectures. do a lot of students record the lectures?

I honestly feel the ISP is the best path. They give you modules and themes I hear that tell you exactly what you need to know for the exam. The exams are spaced at about 3 weeks in between to study. Everyone goes their own pace, and can spend extra time on information they don't recall, rather than spend 2 days on atoms and half a day on endocrine (just an example). I think there are just positives to ISP. But the person must be time efficient! However, I feel any student in medical school is going to have to be time efficicient, even in a Lecture pathway.

Let me hear your guys thoughts.

BTW, can ISP students sit in a lecture pathway lecture?

I agree. I like the sound of PBL and would be interested in it but I can see where the difficulty would come in. It does help to be able to know what not to spend too much time on, so when you get to the exam you dont have a heart attack.

But schools with PBL may be doing something right. I think LECOM-Bradenton has been like #2 in the nation with COMLEX scores the past couple years, I believe. Please correct me if I am wrong.

All the PBL students I know do not sit in on LDP lectures (anatomy, doc talk). They have too much to read to be wasting their time in the class. Also, the reason they went PBL is because they didn't wanna sit in class all day. I don't understand why you would choose PBL and then go to LDP lectures. LDP students schedules vary everyday. This week I was in class yesterday from 8-11:50, lunch from 12-1, gross lab from 1-2:30, break for 30 mins, and histo lab from 3-3:50. Today I had class from 8-11:50, lunch from 12-1, have an hour break from 1-2, histo lab from 2-2:50, another hour break, then gross lab from 4-4:50. We have 5 days of gross lab this week since we have our first lab practical next friday. You get separated into 3 groups based off your last name and then the groups alternate their afternoon schedule, so one group will do anatomy from 1-2:30 and histo from 3-3:50, another group will do histo from 1-1:50 and gross lab from 2:30-3:50, and the last group will do what I am doing today. Once histo is over next week, our schedules change again. The only thing you can bet on everyday is that you will have 4 lectures from 8-11:50.

One thing all of you need to realize is that this isn't undergrad. The lecturers aren't gonna tell you that you only need to learn what's on the slides for the test. There will be certain things they say you need to know and not to study right now, but overstudying is much, much better than understudying. The slides only have so much information on them. For example, we did the forearm one lecture last week. The slides only said the names of the muscles. They didn't say anything about the proximal and distal attachments, functions, and innervations. It is on us to learn that on our own. For me, the easiest thing to do is study from the book and supplement them with the slides. Also, the slides list a lot of clinical correlates that we need to know

They may tell you the objectives you need to learn for the test, but it's still on you to study it. You have to be extremely motivated to learn all this on your own. You may have all this free time, but it may take you twice as long to learn it compared to LDP students who have already heard it in class and lab. The PBL students I know are spending at least twice as much time per day studying that I am and I'm putting in 4-5 hours a weeknite and 8 per weekend day. If you fall behind at all, you are in trouble. Honestly, everyone I know is extremely inefficient with their time right now. Very few of us know how to study for each class effectively. For anatomy, I changed my study strategies and styles about 5 times in 3 days until I found something that worked. It will take us a long time to adjust and become better at managing our time. I have talked to some 2nd years and they say it may be december before we feel fully acclimated to med school

How does the selection process work for LECOM-Erie vs LECOM-Seton Hill? Do they choose who goes where based on your preference of curriculum path? How many students get accepted at each campus?

LECOM-Seton Hill is PBL ONLY and LECOM-Erie does the interview for both campuses. After the interview you choose what pathway you want including what campus if you want PBL by ranking them 1-5 in the order of preference.

I'm not sure on how many they accept for each campus.

Is there somewhere I can find more information about the LECOM-Seton Hill campus like campus facilities, residency placements, etc? I just haven't seen a lot of info for this campus anywhere

I have an interview at LECOM one August 25th.

I was wondering, are a lot of you guys prepping for it??

I have the questions jotted down, and have made a few pointers that I want to make for each one. I also have reviewed the website and jotted down things that interest me. However, actually practicing talking the interview, I am saving it for the last 2-3 days before the interview. Is that enough? Or should I be constantly practicing a little bit? What are ya'll doing?

I just got an invite to interview on Sept. 25th. Pretty excited as this is one of my top schools.

It depends how comfortable you feel. There are a list of questions that all schools will ask you (Why DO, Why here, problems in healthcare) but other than that you may not know.

It depends how comfortable you are. Nothing wrong with talking out loud, so you know how you can articulate your points.

I would also recommend practicing with someone. There's a totally different feel to it when you have a pair of eyes glaring back at you the whole time. It helped a lot when I was preparing for job interviews.

It might also be a good idea to be a little familiar with some of the things in this healthcare bill that is being proposed now because I am sure every school will ask something about it. You should know about it anyway, so then you can actually say you read some of it, which is more than it seems a lot of politicians have done. Even worse, a lot of them have admitted it like it's no big deal!

By the way, is anyone else really surprised and impressed by how quickly LECOM-Erie processes applications? I submitted my secondary and got an interview invite within a week!

Boo I recently added LECOM-E without realizing they require a DO letter 🙁

hey, those who are interviewing, what hotel are you staying at?
which hotels are close to the erie campus?

I am staying at Days Inn. I heard that another student coming to the interview is doing that too. I'm not sure if it's the closet, but it's pretty cheap.

I am interviewing on August 25 and am staying at the Day's Inn. It was one of the more affordable places.

Maybe I'm stupid, but I am having trouble finding those 9 questions...could someone help me out?? That would be great!!

I'm staying at the Days Inn too! See you guys there!

I havent seen a list of the "9 questions" but if you surf last year's interviews on the feedback site there are about 9 or 10 that are very dominant.

I will be interviewing on Aug 25th and im also staying in the Days Inn, maybe we could all meet up and relax a little bit lol

August 25th Days Inn--I'm staying there too.

AFAIK, they don't have a set list of 9 questions anymore. Just go over the interview feedback thread. Be able to answer "Why DO", "Why LECOM", etc. The interview was really stress free and my interviewers were very nice. Actually, my advisor here is one of the doctors that interviewed me. The interviews only last around 20 minutes so you more than likely won't be asked any ethical questions. I was also asked which pathway would be best for me, so have an answer for that, and I was asked what my strengths and weaknesses were.

I sent in my secondary last year and received an interview invite within a couple days. LECOM is very efficient and fast. I had Interfolio send my DO letter to LECOM around 1 on a Wednesday and they had already made a decision by 3 that same day. I received my acceptance letter about a week later. The acceptance letter was a standard envelope with 3 pieces of paper: 1 acceptance letter from Dr. Ferretti, 1 acceptance letter from Amy Rowe, and an address form.

I do not understand why people claim they dont have a list of 9 anymore. The list of questions bleeker just listed is 3-4 of those questions. Even if there isn't a list, its the same exact questions they always ask.

Why DO? Why medicine? why lecom? stengths weaknesses? pathway?

That are 5 of the 9 from the top of my head. Very basic, yet they use them everytime.

complete at LECOM...it sounds like people get a pretty quick turn-around as to hearing about interviews...If I am a decent candidate, can I expect to hear something next week?

It took only about a week for me, and it seems like other people are having the same experience.

Good luck.

Yea and every school will ask those same questions. They are pretty basic questions that let the interviewers know who you are. I was asked similar questions at allopathic interivews (just not "why DO").

I think its because you are early in the cycle, I knew people who applied late last year and it took them over a month to hear something. The earlier you get your materials to the admissions office the better your chances.

Just for a heads up for this years cycle. They did two groups of interviews this summer to test a new format of interviews. They did group interviews at about 5-7 students in each group with two faculty members to each group. They seemed to ask similar questions as they did in the one on one interviews of the past but they let us feed off other students responses as well as let us ask other students and the interviewers questions. It was still closed file as far as we know. I do not know if they liked the format of the group interviews but I just wanted you guys to have the heads up. Good Luck!

Hmmm. I wonder why a school would do group interviews? Is it just to interview more people that much faster? Since there is still only a certain number of seats on the class I don't see why. Also, why would an interviewee ask another another interviewee questions??

ugh.. that sounds really not good. it seems good as just part of a tour, but i wouldnt want such an unpredictable interview to be a key part of deciding my med school admission.

The osteopathic medical book says that the interviews for 2010 are individual interviews. I do not think they could change things up when we get there.

I am not quite clear on how the interviews are conducted. Are the interviews going to be one on one, or a student with 3 faculty members?
