LECOM-Erie Discussion Thread 2010-2011

Where do you see it is due March 1? I'm nervous now, I just looked at mine and I cant find dates on it.

Got an e-mailed response from Amy Rowe; after March 1 is fine. I think we are expected to get the paperwork in ASAP. Earlier is always better.

I don't have a pre-existing condition. When I talk to my manager about leaving and decide on a last day (mid July probably) Ill head up to HR to talk to my Human Resource Rep and find out the specifics about my health insurance coverage when I leave. Thanks.
Definitely speak with HR. Normally coverage is good until at least the end of the last month you worked. When I left my last job, I left June 1 and have coverage through June 30. Again, ask your HR people. They should know.

Unless you're paying for your tuition and everything out of pocket, the two payments for the health insurance will come directly out of your loan money and you'll never have to worry about it. If you are paying out of pocket, they just bill you for half with each semester's tuition, fees, et cetera. You pay the school once for everything and then they deal with it.

On LECOM's insurance enrollment form (it's just 1 sheet?) it doesn't really ask that many questions besides basic info, but there's 2 questions I'm not sure about.

Question 8 is "Effective Date of Coverage"- Do I just put the first day of classes?

Question 12 is "Original Effective Date" - What does that mean?

Sorry to go a little off topic, but is LECOM still offering interviews? Just wondering whether or not I should be getting extremely anxious, or somewhat dejected...my stats are pretty good (29, 3.7c/3.5s), but I only recently submitted the app because I've been waiting for 6 months for my DO letter (bad idea to wait, I know)..thanks for any help!
There were interviews going on yesterday, although I'm not sure which program they were for.

I don't remember seeing either of those questions on the form I filled out for last year, so I'd give Amy or somebody else in admissions a quick call and ask.

So, to clarify, there is nothing due by March 1 right? yall freak me out.

Does anyone know what the deal is with getting to campus sometime before April 1 to get your ID picture taken? I live in Boston and its gonna be real hard (not to mention a small fortune) to get out there sometime in the next month. I'll be moving to Erie sometime in June or July, and hoping they'll just let me do it then.

Hey! On my enrollment sheet those answers are typed in. For Effective Date of Coverage it says" August 1, 2011" and for Original Effective Date it says "Not applicable". I would guess that you could just write this in if it is not already filled in for you, but call just to be sure.

I believe you just need to schedule an appt by April 1 and you can get it done later than April 1.

Hey noday42, I'm from Boston as well. What pathyway you in? I'm in PBL, good to see Boston represented.

I posted this in the NYCOM thread, figured I would post it here too...The person I talked to in the NYCOM financial aid office said that it depends on the different ways schools manage fees. Anyone at LECOM have any idea on this?

From the D.O. CIB, NYCOM has an annual tuition of around $42,000, which is about $15,000 more per year than LECOM. However, the average NYCOM indebtedness is $178,000 compared to $158,000 for LECOM, which is only a difference of $20,000, when it should be more like $60,000. What makes up the difference? Are NYCOM students paying a lot more out of pocket and taking out fewer loans?

They could be paying more out of pocket, or the cost of living, books/supplies, and fees could be less. It'd be hard to tell without directly comparing the financial aid breakdowns for each school that includes all of that. I highly doubt that cost of living is lower than Erie. I pay $425/month for my place with all utilities included since I have two roommates. Could also have to do with scholarships and grants offered by the school, the state, or the armed forces.

Anyone had any luck with finding an apt/housing? I called up Maleno today, they put me on a waiting list and said I may get called in May.

Im a second year almost on my way outta Erie. Most of us will be leaving towards the end of May. So you should definitely expect places to open up around then. Maleno has some nice places.

I've been calling a bunch of places and leaving my name on waiting lists. But I've also been watching craigslist like a hawk

I have applied to to LECOM and PCOM D.O. schools. I was complete for LECOM back in August and PCOM in October I think. OOS. I haven't heard anything from either schools. Anyone in the same boat or have words of comfort. My verbal score was a 6. I am on par with gpa and bio and phys MCAT scores...

From my understanding of PCOM website they only interview through March...?

I have a feeling that verbal score is exactly what's holding you back. I got into LECOM last year with fairly low stats (3.2cGPA, 3.4sGPA, and 25MCAT), but my verbal score was a 10. How are your EC's? Do you have a good DO letter(s)? PCOM is much more competitive than LECOM--I didn't even get an interview there. I would call LECOM and express your continued interest in the program if you haven't already. Give them a reason to look at your file again.

Hey guys, I applied to LECOM also, MCAT 24 cGPA 3.54 and I also still haven't heard from LECOM yet. I actually called them to make sure they received my letter of intent but they said they do not process it unless I get called for an interview. Since it's late in Feb. im getting the feeling i won't be hearing from LECOM...

Hey everyone, I'll be a first year pharmacy student at LECOM this year and I'm looking for a female roommate to room with. Looking for someone neat, friendly, laid back and easy to get along with. If anyone is interested just send me a message 🙂

I go to school in Erie now so I've started looking at apartments. On Tuesday I'm touring Laurel Ridge/Laurel Springs and Lakeview/Village on Pacific and I'll put my name on the waitlists at the same time.....

Mine went til about 11:10 or so. Who did your interview? How do you think it went? I didn't feel so great about mine but we shall see. Do you know if there are any openings left?

They are still doing group interviews- about 8 applicants per 2 interviewers. There may have been over 60 applicants on my interview day.

Lynn McGrath and Regan Shabloski. You?

Do the houses over there require some kind of down payment to hold your spot?

I ask because I want to get my name on a house/apartment right now (before all the good houses are taken up), but I may not even end up going to Lecom Erie.

You shouldn't need one to get on the waitlists, which is pretty much all you'll be able to manage to do until the OMS-II's start to move out for rotations in May. You'll need to pay though when you sign a lease and move off the waitlist as places open up--I assume if you don't sign and pay when you're chosen, you'll get bumped off and would have to start over again. I don't know of anybody that'll hold places in Erie without non-refundable money down--the demand is so high that they can easily afford not to.

How many people move out of Erie for years 3 + 4? Is it easy to schedule ALL rotations out of town? I know it's been asked before but I can't find a solid answer.

Easy to schedule all of the rotations out of town, yes. Easy to schedule all of the rotations in the exact same area, more difficult, especially if it's an area where a lot of your classmates happen to be from. As far as numbers, the majority seem to rotate away from the Erie area. There's only four hospitals here (Hamot, St Vincent's, Millcreek, and the VA), and none of them really have an abundance of spots available in any of the rotations (nowhere near enough to accomodate, I would say, even a quarter of the class.) I do see a lot of students rotating through FP with the local docs though, and I've seen quite a few doing ambulatory rotations locally as well--probably because we get to know a lot of the local FP docs through preceptorship, H&P, and OPP.

Osteopathic Practices and Principles. Or any combination of the above.
Correct, it's the course that used to be called OMM. They changed it to OPP to make it seem less focused on the manipulation aspect of things and more inclusive of the philosophy behind osteopathic medicine. In reality though, It's just OMM with a new name.

Hi Everyone!

I just withdrew my acceptance into the problem-based learning pathway. I hope one of you receives an acceptance!! Good luck!!

Interesting. On interview day, I recall being told that we can schedule them outside of Erie, but almost everyone has to do a few in town. They also said if we wanted to stay in Erie for everything, we could. I guess we shall see.

In other news, I did the urine screen for the background check today. It was me and the dregs of society; I was the only one there not sending results to a parole officer or DOC. So, that was fun.

I have similar scores to yours and Have not heard from either campus yet. My web portal has been stuck on "your application is under review" since September. When I inquire about the status changing, the feedback I receive is "if you haven't received a rejection letter consider it a positive." Just wanted to let you know you are not the only one in that boat.

When were you told about this background check? Was it in the matriculation packet? I don't remember reading anything about that in there.

My landlord is an OMS-III, and he's doing all of his rotations back home in NYC, at least for this year. As for staying in Erie, I guess you could include Meadville and some of the other hospitals that are regionally close by (within an hour's drive or so), which would open up more spots, but who wants to commute that far every day... I assume most would get housing there, which a lot of the hospitals offer. As for Erie rotations being mandatory in some cases, we were never told that except for two that are specific to our PCSP pathway (psych and OMM), because we have a half day of each during the same four-week rotation block.

What do you guys like most about LECOM? I'm trying to decide between a few schools...

My wife has a ton of family in Pittsburgh, any chance we could move there for years 3 and 4?

The current problem is that with the influx of students from Seton Hill and no increase in rotation sites, there might not be enough spots for everyone. There will not be a guarantee that you'll get all your rotations in Pitt.

My application was completed back in Oct. I received an email with a "Hold/MCAT status", pending the Jan MCAT, in which I scored a low 23 (9VR)😡. Any Chance?

GPA = 3.2 (Master degree-physiology).

With a lower GPA and a low MCAT, you're definitely going to have to improve one or the other unless you have some really stellar EC's or experience of some sort (and you'll still prolly need to apply again and be complete much earlier in the cycle next year for a chance.) With your MCAT, did you split the remaining fourteen points evenly with sevens in both physical and biological sciences? If not, that will definitely hold you back--schools don't like to see less than a seven anywhere. Raising your GPA is going to be expensive and tough to do since you have two degree's worth of credits working against you. I'd study hard, retake in April, and shoot to bring it up to at least a 26 before the next application cycle--definitely try to bring your verbal up too, it'll make you even more competitive.

Have you thought about doing the postbac program there? Those stats will get you in to that program, which is basically a conditional acceptance. Check it out. Yeah, its an extra year of school, but it may be worth it.
