For any of you who live on Long Island, you’re very much aware that LIU was planning on opening a vet school. Well the time has come and the school just obtained their letter of reasonable assurance! They just uploaded their application portal. Was wondering if anyone has even started looking into the school and if anyone is going to apply?! I started the application, but it was incomplete in my opinion and as a result, I’m waiting for an email from the school in response. Surprising that this is the 2nd school this week that obtained their letter of reasonable assurance. Interesting stuff!

Could you link their website for me? I’m having trouble finding it

I feel like university of Arizona’s website was a lot easier to navigate and their application was a lot more organized compared to Liu

They have all that information under education and they have a curriculum portion. They actually have the syllabuses listed already for each course, which was surprising.

Yeah, not a huge fan of how their website is laid out, either. Also... maybe my eyes are just getting worse, but dang, bright sky blue text on a white background is difficult to read.
Yep not easy to navigate at all. Their website gets a 0/10. And a -14 for not even coming up as a website in general on a google search.

Odd that it doesn't show up on Google. It's the first result when I search for "LIU vet med" on DuckDuckGo.
Might be a site quality thing if it just launched and has a bunch of broken links.

Just to say that I got an email from LIU about “equivalency application” and submitting my prerequisites as the next step in the admission cycle, apparently

I did as well. Wonder how many people are applying....

Does it say how their admissions process is going to work?

If you fill out the “apply now” info they send you a pdf of requirements. They want official transcripts and GRE scores as well as 3 LOR’s. The website isn’t user friendly and once you start the process you can’t even figure out how to get back to it? I’ve tried a few times, but when you look at rental info in the area it just seems like it will be too expensive (2000.00 +, they have dorms, but no pets allowed). I feel like I’m wasting an opportunity for a US school, but paying for all my transcripts and GRE scores plus getting my LOR’s to do this again seems like a daunting task. AZ had the right idea about taking unofficial documents until they know you’re a good fit, taking 2 LOR’s and making it free.

So Jan 15th is the last day to apply for 2020
Accepted students will be notified by 3/27/20

Format will be MMI, with top candidates receiving an online video interview (there might not be any in person interviews, but I'm not sure)
And interviews will be scheduled late February to early March

Something to consider is that if a school isn't AVMA accredited you won't be able to take the NAVLE which means you won't be able to get a license to practice in the U.S. LIU is not accredited yet so I would be very wary about attending--even though they have a letter of assurance that isn't a definite accreditation. They also are going to be the most expensive school in just tuition alone (even more than OOS penn, midwestern, etc.) and the school is frankly subpar at best as it's a commuter school with no expressed future plans of the VetMed program. ALSO that $55k in tuition is for a program that doesn't even have a teaching hospital.

A letter of reasonable assurance effectively acts as protection for the students. Even if there is some major deficiency that occurs and results in LIU not receiving full accreditation upon graduation of the first class for whatever reason (which itself is extremely unlikely if the school has reached this stage; I don't think it's ever happened before), their degree will still be considered AVMA-accredited for all intents and purposes and they will be able to apply for a US license just fine. The letter of reasonable assurance demonstrates that the AVMA COE has, well, reasonable assurance that the school will comply with all accreditation standards as set forth by them, one of which includes a minimum NAVLE pass rate, anyway.

They have to have a class take the NAVLE for part of the accreditation. The letter of assurance protects the students for the first few classes. If for some reason they don’t get accreditation, the risk is graduating from an unaccredited school. Which I suppose is a risk, but getting where they have is not a quick process. If they’ve spent years and millions of dollars to build buildings and pass inspections they aren’t going to not follow through with everything they need to do.

Well, I just wrote all that for nothing! Lol

Is there an IS tuition or is it all the same?

LIU is a private school, so there is no distinction between IS and OOS for tuition purposes. Tuition is currently set at ~$55k/year for all vet students.

ETA: You can find the COA breakdown here.

Housing is going to be so expensive.

It definitely is. I’m a NY resident and our housing situation is severely overpriced for a small space. Additionally, the area LIU is in is one of the nicer parts of Long Island which definitely adds to the price tag.

I can second that. A monthly rent for a 1 bedroom 1 bath is equally matched to a really nice apartment or even a small house in another state. Honestly, the price tag of Liu and everything else that goes with the expense wise on Long Island is what is making me second guess myself if I would want to go to vet school on the island. However, if that was my only option, I most likely wouldn’t turn it down.

Whoa there’s 2 new vet schools cropping up this year, both in states that already have them? Bonkers.

Has no one else heard anything since after submitting their Equivalency Application? Hopefully we hear about interviews soon-ish

I'm still waiting for my recommenders to send in their LORs. I don't expect to hear anything until those go through.

Does anyone know anyone who has been accepted or interviewed yet ?

Interviews arent until mid-February to early March. There are a few posts about this earlier in the thread if you wanted to peruse them.

I’ve emailed them about 3-4 times and called and left a voicemail early in January. They haven’t gotten back to me. I completed the “equivalency application” and all my letters of recommendation were sent in months ago and they received them. I didn’t know if there was another step to the process, but hopefully there wasn’t because they never got back to me... hopefully my application will be considered. But I haven’t heard one thing from them

I also emailed them. I called them awhile ago and they said something was wrong with one of my letters of recommendations. I had my reference fix it and asked Liu if everything was good on their end, but I haven’t received a response back. So no clue what’s happening exactly haha.

Yes this is so frustrating! I understand it’s a new vet school but I kinda need to know if my application is completed lol

I really believe Arizona’s application process and application was a lot more organized and easy to navigate. They also responded to my questions and phone calls super fast. Not really impressed with Liu so far.

I’m confused about their entire process. I just got an email Friday telling me now I could just apply with my paragraphs and get everything together later? They should’ve used gradcas like AZ did them we could’ve just added them.

Maybe after the equivalency app the next step is interview so that’s why they’re taking awhile and not really saying anything cause they’re still reviewing?

I have not heard since end of November when I completed the equivalency application. But the application only officially closed on Wednesday. So they’ve only had two days since the deadline. They definitely won’t be sending interviews yet, even if we applied early. Give them a little breathing room as they’re probably trying to get their bearings
