LMU c/o 2027 Applicants

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I’m really sorry to hear that🥲 wish you best of luck in other schools! I still don’t have a single email from them, this is like pure torture 😭
Thank you! I’m really hoping for good news from KSU this week 🤞

No news is good news! I didn’t hear a peep from LMU until February last year.

What it looks like is people who were interviewed around 11/9 are hearing back. I had my interview on the 14th, hopefully can hear back soon.

I have officially given up on trying to determine their process. Lol
I interviewed on 11/9 and have not heard back. I know they were going to review applicants as a whole after interviewing them. I thought I had heard that this can take upwards of an hour per applicant? I’m hoping Spring will fill up soon and fall decisions will start going out!

I understand that I interviewed on 10/17 and haven't heard anything back which I know I won't until the spring class is filled.

I interviewed on October 24th and still haven’t heard back. Should I be worried?

LMU is known for not sending alot of application updates. So if you haven't heard anything don't be alarmed! They are focused on filling the the spring cohort. In the past they would send out a few early acceptance for fall (50ish) and the rest wouldn't come until late feburary-march. I know the addition of the spring cohort changes things around but that's just something to keep in mind if you haven't heard anything.

Does anyone know the last date of interviews? I'm curious since it looks like they may have already looked at applicants up until 11/9.

this is more so a message for those who were accepted to spring but declined it. does anyone else have this overwhelming feeling of doom? like I think I have convinced myself I just threw away my shot at vet school even though I have 10 schools left to hear from. I can’t help but feel very anxious when I think about it, but 5 days was not long enough to decide. I feel sick. Just wondering if I’m alone in this?

I know exactly how you are feeling

Weren’t you accepted into SGU? I’m on that thread too. I don’t feel like this because even if all other schools reject me, I have my seat at SGU secured. Still, I declined LMU before I got my acceptance at SGU and I felt it was the right decision. If you’ve already gotten two acceptances starting the cycle and still have 10 schools to hear back from I think your chances are pretty good to get more acceptances. I definitely get feeling anxious, this whole process of waiting is nerve racking. I find that I feel better the busier I am, because I don’t have time to check my emails and Facebook APVMA and SDN 60 times a day. So maybe try to keep busy, and try to put the whole LMU Spring Cohort situation behind you. You didn’t apply for Spring, so don’t let that affect your emotional health

yes I did get accepted to SGU as a backup, but realistically I want to stay in the States. Thank you for the kind words though, it is so true! I really do get caught up so much in these threads, I check constantly throughout the day and I know it does take a toll on my mental health but it’s so hard not to check lol.

You are not alone, it’s first thing I do in the morning and last thing I do before bed, not counting in between 🤪

this is exactly how i feel sending my decline in this morning, I would like to hope that if we are good enough candidates in the spring that it will carry through to the fall and the fact they extended an offer hopefully is considered

If it also makes you feel any better, I think this type of anxiety really goes both ways. I accepted my offer because I don't want to risk having to apply again, and while I am extremely grateful to have the opportunity to go to vet school, I also can't help but think that I might be making the wrong decision for myself. The anxiety of being so far from home and all my friends and family, not really having an opportunity to get to know the school, not having the opportunity to hear back from any of my other schools, and then all of the added on confusion from the spring class being added on has really been bugging me this past week especially. Again, I am grateful to have this kind of opportunity and I think it's great that from now on there will be spots for 100 more students each cycle, but 5 days was really not long enough to decide at all. Anyways, I just wanted to let you know that you're not alone, and that even those of us who have accepted are feeling anxious, just not about the same exact type of thing.

This is soooooo true. My boyfriend was trying to get me to see it from this perspective as well and was telling me I would have more anxiety had I accepted the seat. So so true. Just remember that no matter what, you are going to be an amazing veterinarian! You will adapt to life quickly! Wishing you the best semester ever! ❤️

Does anyone know when we should hear about acceptance for the fall cohort? I had an interview on the 31st of October and was offered a visit on the 5th of November. During this visit, they mostly discussed the spring cohort, changing to offering spring only, etc. but there was never discussion on when the fall cohort should start hearing anything.

Just wondering if a date was thrown out to anyone!

I'm in the same boat here. I'm under the impression that's once the spring class is filled then we can hear back for the fall class.

I spoke with my cousin who is a DVM last night and she solidified my decision to decline spring. I told her I would only accept it out of fear of not getting in elsewhere which she said is exactly what they’re banking on to fill the spring class and make more money, which feels very predatory and i very much dislike that. She also made the point that they do not have a teaching hospital so my fourth year would be spent moving around from place to place and trying to find places to live for two weeks at a time. I honestly don’t think I will attend LMU in the fall if I am accepted again because of this. I hope this helps someone else in my situation as well.

speaking of there not being a teaching hospital. I’m not familiar with that process of moving to a place that does have one during your fourth year. How exactly would that work at lmu?

Essentially you’d be on your own to find housing during your time at different rotations. And there would be the nightmare of subletting your apartment back at LMU too. My cousin STRONGLY encouraged me to go to a university that has a teaching hospital

I know great LMU vets so definitely don’t let it deter you. You’re going around to different states doing your clinical rotations at vet clinics, besides it’s not like they hide this fact from everyone. Everyone here willing applied to a school without a teaching hospital, no one held a gun to your head when submitting for VMCAS. I wouldn’t even sign a lease your 4th year really, and put your stuff in storage. You can find short term placements for living all around, or the vet clinic has housing to provide. LMU helps with the logistics. Do not let this deter you.

Also let’s stop speaking badly about schools we are applying to. If you’ve already decided that you wouldn’t take a fall seat, then email the admissions office to have your application removed from consideration so they don’t waste their time.

I’m not talking badly about the school, it’s AVMA accredited and i know they have produced fantastic vets. I also was aware that they do not have a teaching hospital, but I didn’t really understand the implications of that until speaking with someone who has gone through vet school. Admissions is aware of my decision and will not be “wasting their time” any further on me. I was just adding some information for people who also may have been struggling with the decision. But i think we can all agree that being evaluated for a spring start when NOBODY applied for the spring and then potentially be rejected again in the fall is unfair and puts all of us in a position to make an extremely difficult and even heartbreaking decision.
editing to add: I meant that I might not attend in fall if accepted due to the whole spring start issue, not due to them not having a teaching hospital. I was aware of this when I submitted my VMCAS and paid their supplemental fee as well. I apologize for ruffling any feathers, my intent was not to bad mouth the school but rather to add some valuable advice that I was given.

So from what I understand from the LMU website regarding the clinical year, we can choose the approved sites or send a proposal to the admissions office. Do we have to go to different clinics or can we stay with the same clinic for the whole year if we like it? I am trying my best to be patient but it is so hard lol. 🤣 I am hoping to hear back next week. 🤞

You don’t get to stay at the same place for the year because each rotation has a different requirement (small animal GP, large animal GP, emergency, specialty, etc.). There are a few, however, that at least right now are virtual so if you wanted to stay in the same spot for a little I believe you can.

Guys, since we’re on the topic of rotations and LMU not having a hospital, you can spend your fourth year traveling going WHEREVER you want. This is a big reason a lot of people do want to attend LMU. You can return to you home state or spend your year traveling all around the US. I know a current fourth year at LMU that lives in a camper attached to her truck and she and her fiancé live in it and she has an awesome time traveling. She has a group of friends and they all travel together or close to one another and they have a great time. I love to travel so this is one of the things i like about LMU. I agree it’s inconvenient not to have a hospital, but you can find the bright side in anything.

to add to this, i know a bunch of LMU fourth years that move to knoxville during that time (where UTCVM is located) because there are so many opportunities that are approved. Specifically at Animal emergency and speciality center, which has AMAZING internal medicine and oncology Veterinarians.

So if I haven't hear anything about an interview or about spring start should I be panicking do we think?

Thank you everyone for clearing things up! I am interested in small animal medicine so it's great to know what my options are. It would make sense for those to move to Knoxville and I would probably do the same! I would also love to go back to my home state after I am done so I love the fact that LMU is so flexible 🙂

I’ll chime in to the clinical year conversation to say that a major part of why I chose LMU over the other schools I was accepted to was because of clinical year. I worked with a veterinarian who didn’t seem fond of the idea, either, but I think it’s just because it’s different. They didn’t know or train LMU grads, they just knew what they read about it.
It really works for our students. We’re taught throughout our curriculum how to be “Day 1 ready” veterinarians, and then we have the opportunity to go out and do clinical rotations in areas we want to eventually work in! I personally want to move back to New England, and there’s plenty of opportunity there for rotations. I have some classmates who have expressed interest in using clinical year to travel the country and see where they want to end up after graduation, etc. Our fourth years get lots of hands on opportunities including surgeries at our clinical sites. I remember seeing a fourth year post back in October that she had done almost 200 surgeries (or somewhere near that) ranging from spay/neuter, enucleations, amputations, etc just in her first six months out on rotations!
I wouldn’t let what other DVMs say fully sway you away from our school just because it’s different. A LOT of companies and speakers come to our school and they speak about how highly they value their LMU grads because of the way we are trained. We receive in-depth client communication, leadership, conflict resolution, mental health, etc training each semester, starting semester 1, so we are well trained on having those difficult conversations that you see people posting about not knowing or feeling comfortable how to have. We have so many models that we can practice skills on 24/7 in our clinical skills facilities, so we can practice catheter placement, ophthalmic exams, you name it, it all times of the night. I could go on and on, but I’ll just leave it at that if you choose LMU, you WILL receive an outstanding education. I know people at other schools, too, who feel the same so this is not to bash the traditional schools, but if you learn in a very hands-on manner, then I think you’ll love LMU.
You get hands on with the animals your first semester and even if you’ve never touched a cow or horse before, you’ll finish up first semester feeling confident handling and performing full physical exams on cows, horses, and dogs. That was so important to me as someone who came in with minimal large animal experience to get so much hands-on opportunity early on!
I clearly could go on and on, but don’t knock LMU’s way of doing things until you try it we’re on break this weekend so feel free to reply to this with any questions and I’ll try to get back to you!
(Ps I do not know anything about admissions statuses so don’t ask about that! Lol)

they kept saying their last interview date for spring was early november, but at this point just be ready to at anytime because no one is sure.

You just made me so much more excited about LMU

I’m so glad! This should definitely be an exciting time for all of you! LMU is an awesome school and was at the top of my list when I was applying, but because I applied during COVID, I really didn’t know the details of the program until I started, and I’m so so glad I’m here!

I will also say, as a student who works very closely with administration in my roles on campus, they as a group are as transparent as it gets. The relationship we as a student body have with our admin is unlike any other. They have monthly meetings with us to discuss things going on on campus and to hold open forums for students to ask questions. Their reason? (Because I’ve asked) because they want to! They want a relationship with us and they don’t want secrets and rumors to spread on campus when they can just have a chat with each cohort and see what’s on our mind and talk about it with us!
They are a strong, fantastic group that wants to see us succeed and treats as like colleagues (rather than sitting closed off in a hidden office never to be seen).
I promise you all that I know our admin and admissions is doing everything they can to make this run as smooth as they can, given the time crunch they received from the AVMA.

I can imagine as an applicant this is stressful, especially when this is your lifelong dream, but I know the leaders behind the computers who are interviewing you all and reviewing your applications and they would not do something like hold it against you if you couldn’t attend the spring cohort and asked to be reconsidered for the fall.

This is a learning process for everyone! Our admin truly had it sprung on them that this cohort would happen this January. Luckily, they had a plan in place and we have amazing professors who sprung into action asking how they can help. There is a beautiful new vet tech building being built at our Virginia location that we’ll have access to starting in the fall, there’s more faculty and staff actively being hired, the curriculum is constantly being re-evaluated, etc etc.

All of this to say, I can see from all of your point of view, after spending the money and putting in the work, that this is so stressful having a new cohort to be considered for that perhaps you have no way of joining emotionally, financially, etc, but I promise this is a group of admin, faculty, and staff who have the students’ and the profession’s best interest in mind and if you’re a fit for our program, they will recognize that!
Deep breaths! You will be a DVM!

I wish you all a safe and happy holiday weekend and may the news you’re looking for come your way!

I want to second biomajor2019's point about guest speakers - sooo many that have come to LMU have told us that they LOVE LMU vets because of how we're trained.

Does anyone know if they send rejections out in waves as well? I am really confused about how their process works. I know some people have been rejected without an interview so far so it doesn't make sense to me why they wouldn't just send rejections out all at once.

My guess is right now if they end up not having enough people to fill the spring class and eventually later on the fall class they probably would send out more interview invites so they would need people to send those to so they can't just reject everyone at once.

I am thinking that too. They did say that they might send out more interviews in January. I think that they are waiting to see what the pick they first choose to interview will say and then if they are rejecting the Spring offer then they will move on to their next group. I can't imagine the stress they are going through now trying to fill in a class last minute. I have a feeling that they are discussing decisions right now, my ears are ringing. 🤣

They send out rejections usually in late January or early February in the past. So I won’t sweat it until after the new year
