LMU-DCOM Discussion Thread 2009-2010

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
EMTP, Guynhhuong and Jedi,
We are all waiting for you to post good news! 🙂 I hope y'all find out before this thursday, that way you can enjoy the holiday.

And grace...as many others have done, I would like to wish you the best of luck on your interview. Y'all have been entertaining to watch over the last several weeks!

Best of luck! :luck:

Yeah I should be admitted because I am a part-time comedian in addition to a professor and accomplished scientist. hahah.

Yeah, I am the same way. I don't want to talk about the exam. However, at DCOM they give you an exam and then you have to go into some group and discuss the test questions THE SAME DAY and go through all of your answers immediately. So Grace I think we both are going to have to get over our habits. :meanie:

Thanks for the encouragement- you are as usual too sweet. I called my buddy up and it was good talking about it with him because we both are going through the same things. DCOM was our first interview. He reminded me though that, THE CYCLE IS STILL NOWHERE NEAR DONE YET. We still have December, January, FEbuary, March and in some cases April. I guess what sucks the most is just not knowing where one will be living next year. I really am anxious to move out of Texas after living here 2 years. I could be living anywhere, Tenn, New York, Virginia.....next year. One needs to make plans for all this.

Haha for sure- now that I think about it though that was one of the most appealing qualities about the school when I was there last year. I like to review tests immediately and you do it with a small group, which is great. I think I'm realizing what really stresses me out-- the pre-test-everyone standing outside the classroom-waiting for the test to begin-anxiously discussing last minute topics they were confused about-- situation. WHOA. It's enough to to just make me plug my ears and go la-la-la-la.

And ditto on the whole wanting to know where you're gonna be. I just moved to where I am for a year to do this Masters and now I'm contemplating moving yet again (not to mention it'll be the 10th move I've made since 2004, hahahaha)...imagine last year when I had to sit around until the end of july ready to move at a moments notice if I was pulled off the waitlist. Let that not be my fate this year :xf:

I agree we should make Grace our mascot 🙂 you're too nice. Thanks for all the feedback on your interviews-it really helps

Hey I am glad my (insert euphemism for failure) last year can serve a purpose for people this year, myself included. 🙂

My goal is always to entertain.

You guys are cracking me up with this mascot thing and how nice I am. If only you really knew

WHOOOOO HOOOOOOO............I just got an acceptance call from Dr. Stowers. He's prob at the clinic checking his ear right now 'cause I screamed so LOUD!

I was so excited that I told him, "I'm very excited to attend this school and see you next year at DMU" ------ 😱 DMU. My gosh, wat was I thinking? I was gonna say LMU or DCOM but that's what came out of my mouth. Hopefully he won't take that to heart and rethink on sending me the acceptance letter.....hahahaha

I'm so ecstatic right now, I can't cry 'cause I wanna laugh. But I can't laugh 'cause I can't breathe 'cause I wanna cry. THIS is the weirdest feeling EVER.

I'm gonna spend thousands of dollars on fireworks to celebrate if it's legal right now. kakakaka....

:soexcited::highfive::clap::claps::banana::biglove::zip:🤣

First, CONGRATS!!!!

Second, save that thousands of dollars for tuition!

Third, send that acceptance good luck my way immediately since you no longer need it!

Edit: I had to revise my message and delete the smiley following my comment about tuition because there were too many images in the post (max is apparently 10)...your smiley usage that I was quoted apparently nearly maxed it out. Totally justified however.

what seems to be the acceptance percentage of those who interview here? btw, congrats to all accepted so far, hope to join you guys soon in celebrating!

That is awesome you guys. Everyone that got in from my group, I wish you much love and all the best. I am so happy for everyone who got in. I unfortunately have not heard anything. 🙁 But its all good. 🙂 I have 2 more interviews at the very least (VCOM and NYCOM).....and I am excited about it. I hope DCOM considers me on their wait list. I will call in a couple of weeks to find out. So here is hoping I get into a good situation. If not....... apply again next year, crank out the MCATS, and continue being a Professor 😎 The cycle is far from over though..... it has only just started to get interesting. 🙂

What hotel are you staying at.....for your VCOM interview?

Jedi,

I am staying at the first hotel on the list (Comfort Inn of Blacksburg):
http://www.vcom.vt.edu/visit/accommodations.html

You have to call during the day when the guy who runs the shuttle is there so you can make sure they are free the day you need the shuttle.

Sorry you haven't heard from DCOM yet. Maybe he will be calling tomorrow? If not you could probably call and ask what the issue was. I mean if it was an issue during the interview it would be good to know so you can change that for the next ones you have. Best of luck at the VCOM and NYCOM interviews! 🙂 You will do awesome! 🙂

I think I am going to rent a car. I just wanted to see where you were staying because I am going to reserve a hotel tomorrow.

Yeah the NYCOM interview is not until late January.

Thanks for the well wishes.....whatever happens...happens. Although I have a Ph.D. and great credentials...my MCAT was really low. Just didn't have time to study for it at all because I was finishing my Post-doc at UT Southwestern and was just looking to find employment so I could not live on the street. So I would not be surprised if I get waitlisted at a lot of places. Worse case scenario, I re-take my MCAT and continue as a Professor.

Maybe I will call DCOM in 2 weeks or something. My interview seemed really positive but whoever the hell knows. Everything happens for a reason. 🙂

what seems to be the acceptance percentage of those who interview here? btw, congrats to all accepted so far, hope to join you guys soon in celebrating!

I think I figured up once before that your chances of being accepted after being offered an interview, historically, is roughly 60%. The odds are in your favor at that point. You can find it earlier in the thread.

As far as out of those who are here in this thread? It's fairly high... I don't think it's any secret that as long as everything else is in check (GPA, MCAT score, Extra-Curriculars, etc.) that being on SDN increases acceptance rate.

After all... you're not going into it blind like a LOT of students. You're doing research on the school, the interview feedback, talking to students, etc.

Hell, I just talked to a girl the other day who is taking the PCAT in January hoping for a 2010 seat in pharmacy school. She had never even heard of PharmCAS. There are similar people out there trying for med school... everyone here is ahead of the game in one way or another!!

Congrats to everyone who got acceptances today! Now THERE is something to be thankful for this Thanksgiving! Enjoy the celebrations for your family... you deserve it! The 'game' is over!

I received my call yesterday November 24 at about 1145am!! I am so excited to have been accepted. DCOM was my first choice, see you guys in August.

Good 'ol Lee County! :hello:😀

does anyone know how the class did on the boards?? when are they going to release that info?

Congrats to everyone that has been accepted! I just got the call today offering an interview, I took the first date available (January 11th).

does anyone know how the class did on the boards?? when are they going to release that info?

I was told by a student at my interview that the pass rate was 90-91% the first time around. That number does not include the people who will pass after retaking it.

congrats, gomango. r u gonna go to DCOM???

guynhhuong, Thanks! I have some tough decisions coming up so I'm not sure if I'm going to DCOM yet. I have one other offer which I know for sure I will decline now (DCOM is WAYYY better), still waiting to hear from another school I interviewed at last week and I have one more interview to go to next week. After that I will see what is the best area/school for my family and I! 🙂 DCOM is an absolutely amazing school though. I LOVED it, like I said....tough decision ahead! 🙂 Congrats to you and everyone else! 🙂

Just wanted to give a Happy Thanksgiving to all those on this thread who help Pre-Meds, to the Pre-Meds who help each other, and to those who are only considering med school who think highly enough of us to ask us for advice!

What a great group of people we have here. I'm thankful for it all! 😳

Indeed. Happy Thanksgiving to all! And also thank you to everyone who has offered me help and advice, it has meant more than you will ever know.

😍😍

Now, who ate all the pumpkin pie?! :zip:

IF you guys need to do something during Thanksgiving break other than eating, I like this show, and it is pretty good. Do you guys following the show "The Doctors"?
"Most dramatic surgeries and procedures". It is pretty fascinating: gallbladder removal through vagina, toe shortening, heart outside of chest). Unfortunately I can't always watch it, because my husband freaks out.

Also, I watch if I can the "untold stories of the ER" that's on TLC, sometimes the stories are so unbelievable.

If you guys have time to watch Tv, I recommend them.

I watch "Untold stories of the ER" when I get a chance. What channel plays "The Doctors"? I'm not sure I've seen that one.

I've never seen The Doctors... I do have every episode of Trauma: Life in the ER, though.

There's a good special called "HOPKINS" that you can buy off of iTunes. It's only 7 episodes long. It's fantastic... part drama part documentary (dramamentary? docudrama?). Follows E.R. physicians, the transplant director/team, one of the neurosurgeons.

The neurosurgeon is my favorite... he was an illegal immigrant. Before going to college, on to med school, and on to Hopkins he used to stand in the parking lot next door to the hospital and wait for work.

It's a lot like Trauma in that you get to meet the patients and then watch their procedures. You also get to see a lot about the physician's lives and their family. One of the guys on the show is a cardiothoracic surgery fellow... unbelievable how much time he spends at the hospital.

It's worth the purchase. 🙂

http://www.thedoctorstv.com/ you can check your local listings.
I like this show because they show the actual procedure unfortunately not the whole thing, but useful, and always tell you something interesting, how to treat this and that, new techniques and etc. The main doc is pretty familiar, I think he was on some sort of reality show before.

I will check that out thanks. I haven't watch any episode of Trauma, maybe I watch one online. Thanks

u mean Travis Stork? He was on ABC's the Bachelor season 8 (2006). unfortunately the romance didn't last long.

I just wanted to say grats to all of those with recent acceptances. I'm really happy for all of you! 😍

Hi Mota,

Guess we are in the same boat. Got my letter today about the "alternate list". Although Im sure my economics are not like yours.....I have no family....my economics are not great...but that being said....I am actually glad I got the alt letter. My MCAT was really low and I am sure that is why I got the alt letter. I have a Ph.D., I postdocked with a future nobel laureate physician scientist......but my MCAT was low. So what do I think? I think I am going to re-take my MCAT, possibly in March or April.....I never even studied problems last time, I just took it without studying properly. So hopefully I kick its ass, and get into ALOT better schools then I would now. If I get an acceptance letter I will wait to see how my MCAT is, and if I do that much better, see if I can defer admission and just re-apply...if I don't do that much better....just accept wherever I might get into. I will start studying for my MCAT after my VCOM interview. Even if I get into NYCOM.....I may not go. I feel like I can do better. Yeah I spent and lost 1000s of dollars but.....oh well....atleast I have no wife and kids or girlfriend. 😀 I really would have liked to have applied to UNT and NOVA but my MCAT just wasnt good enough, same with LECOM-B.....I also think I might have a better chance at Texas State schools if I can do better on my MCAT. I owe it to myself. My experience at DCOM and being put on the alt list......convinced me I need to re-apply next year. I am wondering if I get into a DCOM, VCOM or NYCOM if I can defer acceptance. I am just happy I have my jobs as a professor.

I have some questions for those who recently interviewed.

1) I read through the entire LMU interview feedback page and many people were asked a variety of ethical questions, which is something I didn't experience at my other interviews. I certainly expect it, but just wanted to know how many people from the recent interview group were asked ethics related questions?

2) I booked my hotel last week and will be staying at the Cumberland Gap Inn. Originally, I wanted to stay at the Holiday Inn because of the shuttle service, but there was no vacancy for this Monday. Is there an event going on this upcoming week, or is it normal for rooms to be sold out during the interview season?

Thanks for your help everyone. I really want to come here. My mcat isn't the best though, and I feel like this will only get me on the waitlist spot, but I won't lose my confidence either way.

Edit: I forgot to add something. I spoke to someone at LMU in August, regarding my mcat score. English is my second language and I got a 10 on Verbal, but Physics has been killing me and I haven't been able to raise that score. The lady that I spoke to, told me that LMU feels that the verbal score is more representative of how well the student will be able to handle medical school classes. Does anyone else feel this way?? Physical sciences section has been my weakest; both physics and general chem. are not my best subjects, although I did well in my undergraduate courses. It drives me insane because both of those are not even courses that you will need to take in Med school. Bio and organic chem however, I love to study and always do well on. I wish the admissions committee would just realize how much I want this and how well I will perform in med shcool, and that the physical sciences score is not an accurate representation of my abilities.

Congrats to all the new acceptances! We can't wait to have 4 full classes at DCOM next year! 🙂

I was interviewed on Nov. 17th and wasn't asked the ethic question.

I interviewed 11/16 and did receive a couple ethical questions. On one of them they kept changing the scenario over and over and I had to keep changing my answer to clarify things. It was sort of ridiculous and that's why I thought I hadn't done well, but I received my acceptance call, so apparently I did well.
I think the ethical questions are the easiest of all. If you stay true to yourself and your beliefs then these shouldn't be challenging. I wouldn't go into it looking to answer the question how you think they want you to answer that can get you in to trouble. Just stay true to yourself and your beliefs and what you think you would honestly do in that situation and there should be no problems. 🙂 I also think answering all questions like this gives them a true picture of who you are and it also radiates confidence because you do sound so much more confident in your answers when it is what you truly believe.

As far as the MCAT please don't sweat it. If you received an interview invite they WANT you. They saw something in your application that made them think that you would be a great student at DCOM.

My MCAT is very low, so low I didn't think I would get any interviews and now I am shocked that I have 4 interviews and 2 acceptances so far (my PS score was very low, I struggled with physics too!). I think the biggest hurdle I had to get over was thinking I wasn't "worthy" because of my MCAT. When someone told me that apparently the schools that want to interview me do not think it is a problem, I realized that these schools get thousands of applications and that something in mine (and yours too obviously!) stood out enough to make them think I would be right for their school DESPITE the very low MCAT. I realized if I went in to the interview thinking that "oh no my MCAT is so low, maybe they won't want me......" that I would fail miserably. I had to realize that they want me as a potential student, they CHOSE me for an interview, if the MCAT wasn't a problem for them, then I shouldn't think it is a problem at all.

The interview was a chance to show them that I was a confident person capable of doing some introspection and figuring out who I was as a person (you have to have done some introspection to figure out your strengths/weaknesses etc) and that I WANT to be a doctor and I WANT to go to their school. Again it was my chance to show them I was more than a score on some test and that I was up to the challenge of med school and ready to succeed!

Also remember this is a closed file interview and they do not have access to grades/scores etc. You will have to tell them about the things you want to tell them about, such as your achievements/volunteering/etc. You will just have to work them in to your questions as you answer them. It is your time to shine and show them why you want to go into medicine and why their school. 🙂

Good luck, you will do amazing! 🙂

LOL, you right, he was on the bachelor.

You'll get hooked! Be careful! 😀

I didn't have anything to do, so I watched all the episodes yesterday that was online on NBC. By the way, the Hungarian wedding episode was very funny to me, especially when they asked the pregnant woman which month she is in, she said 6 not as they translated around 8. I speak Hungarian, so it was a funny episode to me.

1., I didn't get any, but I talked a lot, so most of my questions were follow up questions. I heard pretty much either they ask you an ethical question or ask you what ethical situation you were in.
2., I stayed at Cumberland, the morning view is great. The hotel is ok, I did not sleep much anyway.
Yes, when i was interviewing the Holiday Inn was booked also, because of some event, so it is common to be booked.
I don't know about the MCAT score, there are a lot of people got accepted who has low scores (including myself), and they told us scores the 6th thing they look at.
I personally hated verbal, first Mcat try it was my highest score, second time it was the lowest, for me verbal depends on what passages I get.
