Minnesota c/o 2021 Applicants

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Interview (OOS) as well. On the fence about whether or not to take it because I already got accepted into Michigan (whose program I really love) and the cost of attending is pretty similar. Not to mention traveling finances are currently pretty tight. Still exciting though! Congratulations to everyone else who has received an invitation as well!

Does anyone know how likely they are to give your first choice date? Looking at flights now but of course I can't book anything until I know for certain.

They do date assignments by first-come, first-serve as far as I know, so the earlier you submitted your RSVP, the better your shot at getting your first choice.

OOS interview invite today. I am really worried about high OOS tuition though. Anyone know if UMN will grant in-state tuition after attending the first year? I know some schools allow it (with many hoops to jump through) and some won't.

Congrats on the invites!

Crazy hoops to jump through essentially with the idea that you're committing to MN (so changing your drivers license, license plates, paying MN taxes, etc) and supposedly it's a semi-subjective process. I was IS so I personally haven't experienced this and I have heard the process is changing but it is possible to at some point switch to IS tuition. Just not the easiest process.

I just declined my interview so hopefully there will be an opening for someone! Good luck everyone! 🙂

2 minutes after you posted this I got an email saying they had an earlier time slot than the interview time I had already secured if I wanted it. I think it's safe to say that they didn't offer your time slot to anyone knew unfortunately. Best of luck to you!

I'll be the weekend of the 10th! Just booked our hotel room. My SO and one of our dogs will be joining in on this trip.

Hoping some awesome foodie suggestions might make their way onto this thread. 🙂

I always tell people to check out The Happy Gnome on Selby Ave in St Paul. Probably 10-15 min from campus. Great food and craft beers! I'd be happy to meet up with people if anyone wanted to.

That place looks awesome! Thank you for the suggestion. My SO traveling with me has been to Minneapolis many times to play music (he is in a touring band) so I am hoping he might also know of some places and will also be able to help us get around the campus/town. I ended up canceling the room I just booked because the pet friendly rooms were in the smoking section. They didn't tell me this on the phone. I sort of forgot about smoking rooms being a thing, but I looked at their website one more time and noticed this detail. I'm really sensitive to smoke so this wouldn't work. After calling more hotels with pet fees, I found what seems like a perfect Air BNB for half the cost of a hotel room. Just waiting for a response!

Hey guys, I got accepted at my IS and canceled my U of M interview! Hope one more spot for you all! Good luck to everyone :biglove:

Good luck to those of you who are interviewing tomorrow/this weekend! Be yourselves and have fun 🙂

P.S. I have a minimal amount of class tomorrow (9-10 and then 1-3) so I'll probably be studying in the area if you want to get away from the interview stress and/or ask any questions.

Also accepted to my in-state! Still deciding whether or not I will attend my UMN interview next weekend just to see the school, but regardless good luck everyone! 😍 You have one less application to compete with!

Good luck to all those interviewing today! Try to relax and have fun too. Everyone is very friendly and wants you to do well.

And if any of you are interviewing tomorrow or Saturday, I'll be seeing you guys for panels and tours.

What is the dress code tomorrow for the Leatherdale Equine Center Tour and the meet and greet?

Welcome to UMN. Dress code is casual for the Leatherdale tour. That said, some people will show up their dressy clothes, but don't feel like you have to.

Thank you! I'm so excited for this weekend!

@southcpupvet , did your tour group up at the equine center today stop at the computer room at all? There were a couple groups led by first years that stopped and I waved awkwardly at them while working... might have waved at you

@supershorty I think we did but it was brief... I was wearing a gold top with a floral scarf. Will you be around tomorrow?

How did interviews go? Any tips for the rest of us? Any crazy hard behavioral based questions...was it really intense or more conversational!?

Very conversational. We had about 5 minutes left after they asked all of their required questions and we just chatted and laughed until time was up. I practiced with some behavioral based questions I found online but I think maybe 2-3 questions I practiced were in my interview. It was good practice to just get the brain juices flowing though and think of some situations. The interviewers are good with giving you time to think of scenarios, which I definitely took advantage of

Applicants that have interviewed, or vet students/grads that have gone through it, are not supposed to discuss specific questions.

Tips that I think are fair for me to say:
1) Relax. We want you to do well. We are on your side. We have to grade your answer, sure, but we are pulling for you to do well!
2) Don't constrain yourself to 'veterinary'-specific situations for your answers. Use all your life experience. A non-veterinary situation that really fits the question is much better than a veterinary answer that sorta can be shoeboxed into fitting.
3) The advice I've given for years now has been: Prior to the interview, find your happy place where you can reflect/meditate, and think back on meaningful experiences in your life. Relationships. Accomplishments. Goals (both failed and achieved). Conflicts. Etc. Just freshen them up in your head. Then, get your spouse/SO/close friend/parent/whatever, and ask them if you can buy them coffee, and have them ask you behavioral questions. If you google you can find examples. Look for examples along the lines of "tell me about a time when ...."
4) Take whatever time you need to think of/through your answer. Silence is not awkward and doesn't influence how your answer is evaluated.
5) Ideally it's more conversational. It is not intended to be a grilling. But it is a professional interview, and it is question/answer, so naturally it <might> feel a little intense. We aren't trying to intimidate you or make you nervous - we want to help you relax as much as we can.
6) Ask whatever questions you want in the time left at the end of the interview (if there is any). Doesn't even have to be about UMN specifically. If you have questions about working in the field, living in MN, UMN CVM ... it all is fair game. You are not evaluated on questions you ask us.

There is a brief section in the UMN CVM Prospective Student Planning Guide about the interview. It may contain more useful information for you. The current guide is for admittance 2018, but the interview process is still relevant.

@LetItSnow are you doing interviews this year?

Yes, but other than what I said above I won't comment for obvious reasons.

I try to stay involved at UMN as much as time allows (which, unfortunately, isn't a ton). I volunteer with SIRVS. I would volunteer with VeTouch, but they apparently don't need it. Last year I didn't have time to do interviews, but this year I'm doing some.

It's my alma mater, and I love UMN CVM and its staff/faculty. I gripe about the cost of attendance, but it's still an amazing school. So I want to help out where I can. I was going to do the mentorship program this year, too, but decided I just couldn't commit. Maybe next year.

I can't remember if they use outside (non-faculty) DVMs for things like skills labs. If so, I'd love to do that.

I've always wanted to do some teaching.

They have for my class a few times so far! You should totally come teach us. All us first years are still wide-eyed and excited about everything.

Otherwise I'll just wave at you from afar with my tiny hands that Dr. Trent says would be a size 5 glove if those existed. :hello:

Just declined my interview. Hopefully that opens up a spot for someone!

I also declined my interview today. I am hoping they call someone off the waitlist!

This was all extremely helpful thank you so much!

Does anyone know if UMN gives out any sort of scholarships or financial aid for OOS students?

Doubt it. There are scholarships you can apply for but you typically have to hunt them down yourself. And the MVMA ones (at least a few) are preferentially given to people who went to HS in Minnesota.

Had my interview today. To everyone who has yet to interview - it was not stressful at all! My interviewers were so nice and really helped me relax/calm my nerves. This was my 5th interview this cycle, and overall I felt the best leaving this one compared to the other four.

i completely agree with this statement! i was freaking out about this behavioral style interview...trust me there is nothing to worry about! my interviewers were so personable and made it feel like i was talking to a fellow coworker/colleague

When can we expect on hearing back? I know the last round of interviews is next weekend
