Mizzou c/o 2017 Applicants!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Mizzou has been on and off my list to apply to (even though I've actually written one of the essays already, but will be using it similarly elsewhere).

Someone try to convince me to go ahead with it?

We could be classmates!

One of the vets I work with went to Mizzou. He's hands down the best general practitioner of the 10 vets I've worked with--good enough to make me seriously consider moving to Missouri to get the same training he did.

bbnhyu7uhgggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggn <--and that was my laptop envious bulldog promising you can use her for physical exam practice if you go to Mizzou. 😎

First and foremost, COST! Pretty darn cheap, IS tuition after the first year, cost of living is low, awesome athletics facility, early clinics (practically 2+2 I think). And I'm applying!

Didn't realize this! Just went and looked it and it does sound pretty 2+2. Interesting. Definitely swaying me towards applying!

And, obviously, all you all applying also!

Yeah, the cost and the 2+2 are the biggest draws for me. It's probably going to be between there and Ohio (where my best friend is getting her PhD) if I get into both.

ALSO.....Krist & I will be there! 😛

Really though, Mizzou was the best interview I had. It's short- like 15 minutes- but they actually asked questions about ME, not the usual "blah blah name some issues in vet med now" BS. Everyone down here is SUPER NICE and helpful, Columbia has pretty much everything you could possibly want, cost of living here is WAY less than a lot of places (we are renting a 1600 sq ft, 3 bed 2.5 bath place for $760/mo), and the facilities are quite good and updated. I got accepted at my IS, and I chose Mizzou instead. I haven't regretted it yet. 🙂

And kakuru...you already have my avatar. Why not have my school as well? 😛

Im only applying to Mizzou and my IS-Tennessee .. I'm very torn between the two. I love the fact that Mizzou does 2 yrs classroom, 2yrs in clinicals, but there is a $30000 tuition difference between UT and Mizzou. Is the cost difference worth it?

You can get residency at Mizzou after your first year, which brings the tuition waaaay down! Cost of living here is quite reasonable, as well. Example: I have a 1600 sq ft duplex, 3 bed 2.5 bath, 2 car garage, washer/dryer/dishwasher included, for $765 a month. Someone at University of Illinois told me her one bedroom apartment was more than that! I don't know how that compares to UTK, though.

Also, we do this AMAZING orientation trip for first-years. We go to the Lake of the Ozarks for about 3 days and do tons of team-building, communication, stress management, low ropes, high ropes, and other stuff. The professors & "higher-ups" even participate! My class has already had a pile of get-togethers before school has even started. I'm not nervous about not knowing anyone now (just nervous about not knowing anyTHING!).

Plus, everyone here in CoMo is SUPER nice. I came from outside Chicago, so I'm so used to everyone being a giant douche. It's pretty amazing 🙂 I brought my husband here with me, and he LOVES it.

If you ever have any questions, feel free to post here or PM me! 🙂

I'm PM you! I've wanted to get in touch with an OS Mizzou student so bad! I have several questions!

Is anyone else having a hard time logging into the supplemental application? I tried logging in last night to get make some progress but I got an error message. I emailed the webmaster but haven't gotten a response.

I've been having problems too and it seems there's an error every time I try to create a username and a password. I end up having to sign in with my VMCAS ID and it works.

I'm going to call them today and get it sorted out..

On another note, I was wondering if in the essay portion of the application it is appropriate to touch on Mizzou being your number one choice school (if this applies to you). For me, even though I'm an OOS student, I would chose UMO over my IS. Definitely will not down my IS, but am thinking about briefly touching on my motivation to attend Mizzou in my motivation essay. Or even the uniqueness essay.. Who knows at this point! Lol

Any input is welcome!

I know I mentioned in my interview that I would choose Mizzou over my IS. I forget exactly what the essay questions entailed, but if it is relevant to what they are asking for (like if one of the questions asks, "Why Mizzou?" or something)... I'm sure you could work it in there, especially in the context of praising Mizzou's program.

The three essays are
1. Motivation
2. What makes you unique
3. Service to the community

I'm thinking in my motivation essay it would be easiest to have a line or too on how Mizzou could help me achieve my long term goals in a way that praises the program.

I think that would be just fine! 🙂

Awesome! Thanks! BTW, Nordicat, how has your first week been?? What do you think so far?

It has been really overwhelming! There is so much information to cram into my brain, I don't know how much more room I have in there! 😛

I've studied almost every day (took Friday & Saturday "off" from studying since my in-laws came to visit), and I aced my first quiz! Everyone feels pretty overwhelmed right now, but I think that's pretty common among all first-years. Because of the 2+2 program, Mizzou is a bit accelerated. Our instructional periods (IPs) are 8 weeks each, so it's almost like we're on quarters instead of semesters. There are 5 IPs in first year, and I was told that after IP4, you are technically considered a VM2 (2nd year). Also, our summer break between first & second year is only 6 weeks long 🙁 That kind of sucks, but I just keep telling myself that we'll have so much more experience than those at other schools!

That being said, I'm still freaking out a little that I won't be able to succeed in my classes. Again, this seems pretty common for all schools- check the "Class of 2016- How are you doing?" thread.

I've been watching it the past couple weeks as everyone started classes! Definitely one of my fave threads. From the looks of it, most people are having a bit of anxiety so far, so your in great company! Congrats on Acing your first quiz! I'm sure you are gonna be just fine in your others classes!! :luck: 👍

Hey fellow Tiger hopefuls!! So I'm a procrastinator in the worst form... My PS is in the works, but my 3 essays for mizzous app are yet to be started. 😱 My question is, using Microsoft word or office, about how long is the 1600 character limit? I'm planning on starting them all this week, It would be nice to have an stimate to go with so I don't end up completely over writing and have to chop up my essay lol. Thanks!

2 medium sized paragraphs approximately. It's super short. In word you can look at word count and it will tell you how many characters it is. Just check as you go along.

Really, there's 3 vet schools who are tigers? Huh. Did not know that until just now.

Yeah our school mascot is the tiger, but then we have the mules, currently Tim and Terry, who are the vet school's personal mascots. It's fun - they live right behind the vet school with one of the old mules, so you can visit them whenever you like.

I knew there were 2.. Mizzou and LSU (let's go SEC!!!) but what is the other?

Auburn. One of my friends went to Auburn and a bunch of my friends went to LSU for undergrad. I imagine their football games against each other were fun and mildly confusing.

Wow, totally forgot about Auburn.. Another SEC school lol. I love being from, and living in the south 😀 😍

Has anybody paid their supplemental fee by check? Has Mizzou deposited that check? I mailed mine in July, and they've acknowledged receipt on the phone and online, but it still hasn't cleared the bank. Not a huge deal, just curious.

I think sometimes with those types of things they wait and deposit them in big batches or all at once.

Holy Smokes! I just finished one of my essays... and it has EXACTLY 1600 characters including spaced... EEEK! I think it sounds pretty good.. gonna have a couple people read it before I save it in to the app!!!! Finally making progress! 😀 :soexcited::zip:

Hi! Was just wondering if you could elaborate on the 2+2 program? I'm applying for this cycle and after reading your comment I tried to find some info about it on the website...not much luck though.

Do you essentially end up spending more time in rotations and doing more hands on work than regular progams?

Thanks ahead of time! 🙂

The program gives us close to 2 years of clinics. We start in October of our 3rd year, and we have blocks built in to our schedule to do externships and such. Missouri requires that you work for 320 hours under a vet to get licensed, and hours at the teaching hospital apparently do not count. You can start obtaining these hours once you have finished 2nd year, so you have lots of time to fulfill that requirement if becoming licensed in MO is your goal.

This is why Missouri is my #1 choice! Ahhh gotta finish these darn essays !!!

Yup, from what I have read...Missouri is pretty kick-ass! 🙂 I only have one more of their essays to finish and it's the motivation one. So hard to write one that doesn't sound exactly like my personal...

Okay, so I have procrastinated on the supplemental app and am finally working on the essay questions...but the essay topics are all things I covered in my personal statement for VMCAS. I already highlighted why I want to be a vet, my best qualities, how I would contribute to society as a vet, etc. I guess I could expand on the ideas in my personal statement but I don't want to be repetitive. Any advice on how to make these responses different?

Good luck, guys! I can imagine it would be tough to do these essays after spending that time on your PS. I applied IS to Mizzou, and only to Mizzou so I didn't write a PS. Take the following advice with a grain of salt.... What I would try to do would be to think of a specific experience that you can wrap the essay topic around so you can present it in a nice little package. These essays are not very long, so it can't be a detail-ridden story, but something that gives them a visual while reading is always nice. That way you might be presenting the same ideas, but in new ways and with new stories that will keep their interest.

I know it is so late to be working on these essays but I was suddenly inspired yesterday talking to my dad. I was wondering if it would be an issue to talk about the story behind my parents traveling to America from Vietnam after the Vietnam War ended. My mother was a refugee and she traveled alone by boat at my age to meet the rest of her family in America. My dad was the captain of his ship and fled to America...they were both my age at the time this happened. I just feel like my heritage is a huge driving force in what moves me to do ANYTHING everyday..especially to take risks and work hard. If they can do that..then I feel like I can at least try at anything I want.

I just don't know if it's weird to talk about my parents, or if they really want something I personally experienced. It's not exactly an accomplishment or personal experience...but I think it's an "attribute" maybe.....

I think that's a great thing to talk about in your uniqueness essay. Just try to focus more about what your heritage means to you (definitely use your parents story as background though).

thanks for the feedback. now i'm regretting on working on this so last minute. argh..getting antsy

My experience working with lab animals have all been in my undergrad classes..so do I put my hours down on the experience with animal section? But then the next section says dont include undergrad class experiences...so can I even put anything down?

December?

thats what im hoping for lol

We found out late December for in state. I know out of state students found out sooner- I want to say end of November? But it felt like an eternity waiting so it could have easily been just a week before and I think it was longer. I know there was a thread last year when everyone said they got their letters, you could search for it 😀
