Could anyone give me some info on the black med schools (morehouse, meharry , howard, Drew(UCLA))?
Interviews, visits, students, faculty, reputation?
😕 😀

Why do you want to know only about schools that mainly accept blacks may I ask?

Maybe b/c that's where she/he would like to attend. Do you reply in this manner to those who only ask about top 10 med schools?

People tend to enroll in school where they believe they will be comfortable, but you already know this, I'm sure.

Some people on this board just don't think before they post.

Excuse me. Being of a minority group myself, no one understands that better than me. I was asking for the purposes to understand this person's reasoning. I know many individuals of African American descent that sell themselves short and tend to lean towards solely black schools. I often encourage them to apply elsewhere as well because when you go to school its not only a medical school education you are receiving, you are also receiving an education on diversity and dealing with various groups of people. It is an enriching time in one's life. I resent how people jump to certain conclusions, like Mellow, when the only intent of my question was to get a better understanding of individuals and their rationale. Maybe you need to think before you speak, instead of jumping to conclusions.

I have many black friends that applied to these schools because they thought certain schools had a racial bias. I was curious to know what this person's reasoning was for that purpose, because I would never want anyone to sell themself short especially if they can obtain the highest level/quality of education possible elsewhere.

This is a little off topic, so I guess it is like all the other posts on this thread (hey, I'm not one to force adherance to topics).

A friend of mine has legacy status at Morehouse. Problem: she's Vietnamese! So, she's got one thing going for her but one going against her (she's an ORM). Do you think her legacy status will help her at all?

Hello everyone!
I am currently a first year at Morehouse. Just thought I drop by.
Psyc.lover I sent you a private message.

Overall my experiences at MSM have been wonderful. There are some negatives but I am sure there are negatives with every school.

nray- I understand your point of view. Even though I attend a historically black medical school. I would discourage anyone from 'just applying to black schools' and 'just applying to top ten schools'. But in all honestly, by matriculating at MSM, I don't think you will be selling yourself short. True, there are some schools that are 'just black medical schools'... But Morehouse is a very high quality institution.

As far as the schools you listed psych.lover I only applied to Morehouse and Meharry, both because of the good things I have heard about them. Meharry I personally did not like when I interviewed there. Morehouse's interview/visit went so well that I moved them to the top of my list just beneath UNC (to which I was waitlisted). I did not apply to Howard because of its' 'undesirable aspects' that I heard about from close friends. As far as the other schools I will remain neutral because I did not even consider them.
Anyone having specific questions about MSM, atmosphere, student life, where to live etc. I will be more than happy to answer them. You may send a private message if you feel your questions may spark some flames.

the reason that i asked about black med schools is because ive been reading alot of posts and getting a lot of great feedback about this whole process, in which i happen to be in the beginning stages of. i did not see one post about any of the schools that i mentioned. im black so i just wanted to know about them. simple. 🙂

As far as selling my self short 😡 for wanting to attend an HBCU, i STRONGLY DISAGREE. i am currently attending a historically black college and it is ranked #1 in placing blacks med school.
im not restricted to them but this happened to be a topic that i wanted current students and applicants to respond to.

thank you to anyone who can give me any insight on this topic!

•••••The percentage of AA's at my high school was less than 15% (the other 85% consisted of various other groups) and the college I attended was very diverse... I have experienced more diversity than you can ever imagine and dealth with various people from all walks of life.
I am considered an URM, but I don't think anyone is selling themselves short by applying to soley AA's schools. Applying to AA schools doesn't mean one wants to isolate themselves from other groups.

These predominatly African american schools accept most african americans because mostly AA's apply.
If 90% of their applicants were non-AA's....then they would have more non-AA's students there.

Like ATlien said.....the person wants to know about these schools because these are the schools they are interested in...point blank.
😀

😕 😀 •••••I interviewed at Howard earlier this month. A lot of people tend to put down HBCU (I don't know why) but I was very impressed with the school. The students there are very warm and everybody acts like a big family. The faculty-I really didn't get to meet except for my interviewwer. From my interviewer I got the impression that they really try to look out for the students....(the students also try to look out for each other). Location is not bad, I come from brooklyn (NY) so I wasn't too shocked by the area. They said crime rate is low to non-existent around the school campus though. Housing will be my only problem...they have dorms but there are conflicting view points on whether to dorm or get your own housing. Definately apply there, go for the visit and see what they have to offer first hand. Howard produces 25% of the nations AA physisicans.
