MPH 2019: Applied, Waitlisted, Accepted!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Hi! I'm going to be an applicant in the next cycle, and I was wondering if you would want to look over my personal statement in the future (during the summer)? I am interested in applying to similar schools as you. Congrats on Johns Hopkins!

More than happy to! I tried to PM you but it wouldn't let me. Could you send me a PM? Sorry about the delay, I've been away from SDN for the holidays!

when did you hear back from OHSU?

UGHHHH, just looked at my essay to UIC and saw this little tid bit in my last paragraph.... "I am delighted by some of the research interests of George Washington’s faculty".

Come on, after I read and re-read that essay SO MANY times, I still make this mistake?

I received a mail today from Yale saying I need to take a video assessment with few questions of 3-5 min each. What is it about? Did anyone who applied to Yale get a similar mail? Please help!

I didn’t get an email like that. I applied for EMD also. What did you apply for?

Oh I see! I applied for chronic disease Epi. When did you submit your application? May be you are yet to receive it.

I submitted it on 11/26 and got the application completed email on 12/15

Did you get a separate application complete email after an application received email? I've only gotten the latter

Yes. I got the application received email on 11/26 and then the application completed email a few weeks later.

I have my phone interview for Dartmouth tomorrow morning! I've read about the program and faculty research interests but I'm thinking about other questions I may need to be aware of. Anyone else complete a Dartmouth interview?

Ugh I'm sorry! I can understand how statements just get muddled in our heads over time. Maybe you could reach out to UIC admissions and ask to append a new SOP to your application? I don't think it can hurt.

Has anyone gotten an interview with Columbia's HPM program?
I did! It was really chill. I had interviewed with a 2nd year student and she asked me general questions like why Columbia, why Health policy. This took about ~15-20 minutes. Then the rest was open to ask your interviewer questions. Basically, more of a chance to elaborate on your personal statement since it was so short.

I interviewed with Dartmouth and it was very conversational. Mostly asked about my past expeirences with public health and why I was interested in the program as well as my past quantitative experiences. Also be ready to ask some questions yourself about the program. Overall it was a pretty calm interview, not too stressful.

Heyy, mind sharing your stats and timeline? I applied to HPM end of Oct and still haven't hear anything about a phone interview, wondering if it's a bad sign....

This was helpful, thank you!

Do all Columbia HPM applicants get offered a phone interview, and is it a bad sign if I haven’t heard about one? Submitted my app at the end of November

Woke up to an email that I got accepted to UCLA for epidemiology!

Woah, congrats!!! I didn't realize they sent out decisions this early. UCLA is probably my top choice so now I'm going to be anxious about hearing back 😀

Sure! Columbia let me know that my application was received on 11/29 and then gave the heads up about interviews on 12/13. On 12/14 a student reached out to me to schedule an interview. Tbh, I wasn't even aware that Columbia had interviews for their HPM program so this really caught me off guard. But I couldn't say if an interview is a good thing or a bad thing.

I spoke with a friend who is currently at Mailman but in a different program to see if they could ask around because I had no clue an interview was part of the process and they said that the HPM students they spoke too had interviewed. I don't know if that means everyone interviewed or just the people they asked interviewed.

I know someone has asked this already but I don't want to read through 14 pages of this post so help me out; if I take the GRE twice, will both scores be considered for most programs or just the most recent one? Thanks!

Usually programs look at the higher scores, at least that was the case last year when I took the GRE and scored lower on the second try.

Does anyone have experience with updating their fall grades after you have submitted on SOPHAS? I manually entered my grades already. I assume I should send SOPHAS my recent transcript? Will the GPA be re-calculated?

Yes, I emailed them about that. I manually updated my grades and sent them my transcript. They sent my updated GPA to all of my schools right after recalculating my GPA.

Thank you!!! Yeah I had no idea, I didn't expect to hear from them until February! I've lived in SoCal my entire life so I'm not too keen on staying here for my master's, but it's such a great school! I wish you the best of luck!

Hey there I'm wondering what you guys think of my chances given that I have a bad undergraduate GPA but a good graduate GPA and international experience. I'm applying to dual MPH-MPP programs with the hope of working with climate change refugees in the future.

Undergrad School
: Little liberal arts school that "changes lives" (graduated 2013)
Undergrad GPA/Major GPA: 2.64/3.1 (not great I know)
Major/Minor: Sociology
Graduate School: University of Essex (MA in Sociology, graduated 2014)
Grad School GPA: 66.1 (Equal to about a 3.71, it's being converted from the UK system)
GRE: V: 163 (93%), Q: 156 (61%), W: 4.5 (82%) (September 2018)
Experience/Research (please, be brief):
- MA thesis involved researching how British military charities provide social and financial support for children whose parents were killed in combat.
- Spent a year working in Istanbul with the Istanbul Center for Behavioral Research and Therapy as a clinical research intern. Worked primarily with Syrian refugees and torture survivors diagnosed with severe PTSD. Conducted literature reviews, helped with treatment/research, edited a book on torture in international law and presented research at conferences in Istanbul Stanford and at Caux, Switzerland.
- Did a year of research and field interviews for the Department of Housing and Urban Development in housing projects in South Boston.
- 2017-2019 Community Health Agent in Peace Corps Senegal. I digitized 28000 handwritten, French health consultation records to create heat maps and analyses of regional health problems. Did that with no electricity or running water, which was fun.
- I'm extending my Peace Corps service into August 2019 as the first "Health Data Analyst PCV Coordinator" and I'll basically be creating a framework for all health volunteers to use data analysis in the future.

LOR: Country Director of PC Senegal, Health Sector Director of PC Senegal, my MA Thesis advisor.

Interests: Refugees; climate change; policy; MPH in behavioral health; mental health

Applying: Harvard, Columbia, Yale, University of Michigan - Ann Arbor and Johns Hopkins.

I'm only applying to the programs which I think could help me in the future, which are pretty highly ranked. Am I a competitive applicant? I'm wondering if your undergrad GPA matters less over time, or if you get another graduate degree. Please let me know!

Edit: I also speak five languages: English, Turkish, French, Pulaar and Mandinka. All are fluent except my French and Mandinka which are intermediate.

Dear friends

Is there anyone who has applied to Vanderbilt MPH? I submitted and became verified 13 days ago, but I've not received any email from them to be sure of their reception, is this routine?

Question for anyone who has applied to the MPH at Mount Sinai: did you get an email confirmation from them? I had a kind of weird thing happen when I submitted on SOPHAS (it took a long time to load and then they charged me twice) and it says my app is verified but I just want to be sure about whether I should be expecting some kind of confirmation.

I received a confirmation letter almsot 5-6 days after its application submission on SOPHAS.

Has anyone heard back from Boston University's MS in Epi program yet? If so, might I ask when your application was verified?

Hello all,

Received an email from GWU with funding information. It stated that, to be considered for need-based grants, I needed to fill out a CSS profile. Has anybody done this yet? It's forcing me to add my parent's information though I am an independent student. Any suggestions?

I’ve completed the CSS. I called GWU & asked if it was required since I am also independent and was told that everyone applying must fill it out if they wish to be considered “especially since you are under 26 years old.”

Same here. I emailed GW to ask about it and was told that since I’m under 26 I have to report this information, even though I live with neither parent and have been working full-time for 2 years.

Not yet :/ I spoke to an admissions rep who told me I should expect to receive an answer the week of 1/2 sooooo I've been obsessively checking my email for days haha
I heard back from the Population, Family, Reproductive Health Department and got accepted! I also applied to International Health, Health Systems but have not heard back yet. I called today and they said that it takes 8-12 weeks for some departments to review applications.

Which department did you apply to?

Just checked OPUS and it says I got admitted to Emory for MPH in GLEPI! My admission letter isn’t available yet and I haven’t received official notice but yay (I think?)! This is the only school I’ve gotten any decision from and ironically is also the most recent program I’ve applied to.

Congrats! When did you submit your application and when did they tell you that it had been sent to the department for review?
