MPH 2019: Applied, Waitlisted, Accepted!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Did you receive a merit scholarship from Emory that included funds for visiting the school? I received the scholarship last week with $300 included for Visit Emory (which I would receive if I accept my offer of admission), but I also got the separate email yesterday about a $300 travel grant because I submitted the travel grant application. I'm just trying to figure out if the $300 they offered me yesterday would replace what was in my scholarship or if this is separate funds.
sorry, I am just seeing this. I did not receive a merit scholarship. I'd email admissions if I were you!

From a very strange and quite frankly unprofessional email, it looks like I got rejected from UC Berkeley for epi/biostats. I'm really surprised, definitely not expecting that

I'm sorry to hear that. Why did it seem strange/unprofessional?
It wasn't from the department I applied to, and there was no formal rejection or even an acknowledgement of my application. Just said that the dept I applied to won't be offering me admission

So sorry to hear that 🙁

I got rejected from Berkeley for undergrad and it caught me completely off-guard - completely devastated me, to be honest. It seems like they are big on "holistic" admissions and sometimes it leads to rejections that don't make any sense.

A little confused with conflicting messaging from Emory's financial aid office. Someone on the thread noted they called the office and were told all merit scholarships had been awarded, so I found it odd that on their recent financial aid webinar that followed, they stated that "most" of the merit aid had been awarded. I emailed to inquire myself and just received the response, "Please note that merit award decisions are currently being distributed until early March". Uff. Looks like another few weeks of having a shred of hope, even if they're just sticking to their guns for consistent messaging purposes.

Strange- maybe it means you aren't in for your first choice but other departments are considering you?

I'm the one that called earlier, and I had to get transferred a few times to actually talk to a financial aid person. The woman I talked to seemed adamant that they had all been given out, but it's possible that I was being annoying, so she was just trying to get me off of the phone. I'd trust what they say in the webinar.

how long did it take for most of you to hear back from emory after receiving access to opus? still awaiting a response

I heard back after 3 days, but I think they do them in batches and my timing was lucky. Your stats look better than mine, so I imagine you shouldn't have any trouble getting in if they have any spots left.

Go for it, and tell us how it goes lol! I seriously thought they'd be more generous than this but apparently they're not, what a bummer!
By the way if I may ask, would you consider getting a loan from private funders? I had never thought it as an option but at this rate, looks like it could be the only way I can get an MPH this year. There aren't many MPH scholarships out there!
Replying through DM! If anyones interested in joining our DM convo regarding funding for internationals, please shout out!

i would LOVE to hear about your thoughts on Tulane (and epi if that's your department) from your visit and what helped you make your decision!!!
This may be different for everyone, but when did you hear about your financial aid from Tulane? I got accepted in November and haven't heard from them since regarding $$. Thanks!

I've reached out to them this week, we still have about a month according to them.

"In the next month or so, once tuition and fees are set for the School of Public Health and Tropical Medicine, the Financial Aid Office will be able to package loan awards."

Thanks! I just sent them an email too. Hopefully, they offer me something.

Did anyone else receive their financial aid package from Columbia last Friday? Mine was a bit disappointing. Not that I'm ungrateful, but was hoping for anything more than the 8k off tuition they offered. Fellow international students, how are you affording these expensive schools like Columbia et al? I'm not ready to rob a bank yet.
I got mine last Friday too. Tuition at Columbia seems to be reasonable but the living costs! Perhaps it's worth attending one of those Financial aid virtual chat that Columbia offers.

is anyone else waiting on harvard, specifically the global health program?

Yes I submitted before deadline, but my WES evaluation came in much later and I got admission decision late.
Do you have an idea when we should be expecting to hear back for the 2nd rounds

we have officially completed our first-round of scholarship offers. By now, all first round award recipients will have received an email or mailed notice from the School or the Division. We will continue to re-award money as it becomes available, so it is still possible that you will receive an award before the April 15th decision deadline.

This was the response I received.

Has anyone gotten any kind of decision from Yale? Why are they taking so long this year?
They said in their email confirming that your application was received that we will be receiving decisions first week in March. Apparently that’s later than other years but I was grateful that they gave a clear timeline so we didn’t have to do the same waiting game as other places. I’m crossing my fingers that they release March 1!

Maybe I’ve missed something, but I haven’t heard anything about UNC scholarships on this thread... Does anyone know what the timeline usually looks like and how strict they are with their scholarship criteria?

In case anyone else was like me and bummed they didn't hear back from Emory about the MCH Fellowship on Friday, I emailed Teresa Parke and she informed me that the committee is still meeting to finalize Fellowship recipients. So here's to some hope still!

Vanderbilt told me in their admission email that they let us to obtain an RA position from the first semester! And they will manage the student-professor matching process in summer! Isn't it really good and different with other schools? Has anybody heard sth like that from other programs? However, I don't know how much they pay per hour, and how much an RA position will decrease the tuition.

I'm about 2 weeks past annoyed with them and have been very frustrated for the last few days. the trickle response they're doing is very anxiety-inducing

I've been sad and terrified and then ticked off. Their visit day is 3/19 and I just need to know if I need to look at flights/tell my professors I'll be gone sooner than later. This is absolutely ridiculous rip off the band aid already

GPA: 3.5 cumulative (SOPHAS verified)
GRE: Q: 156 / V: 148 / W: 4.5
Major: Animal Science
Experience (professional or otherwise): Veterinary Assistant, Dairy Cattle Research, Cardiovascular System Research
Special Factors: want to go into governmental veterinary medicine-- I applied to MPH programs in case I didn't get into any domestic vet schools and use this as a gap year and figure some things out as well, but I know it is something that will add to the field I want to go into eventually.

Applied: NYU (Community Health Science & Practice) and Brown (MPH in Environmental Health)
Rejected: Brown (2/27)
Accepted: NYU (with half tuition scholarship)
Attending: TBD

other: I've been hearing a lot of negative comments about the NYU program. Does anyone have any insight?

For what it's worth, I got accepted yesterday (Epi/Biostats) so I absolutely would not give up hope! I do have to agree that the slow trickle of results they are doing is agonizing. I preferred the longer but more concrete undergrad application process.

I asked about this in January and they responded: "Funding announcements should be announced in mid-February. Nominations are made by the concentrations based off of the applicant’s application." So I'm hoping they are just running behind schedule...

has anyone heard from cal im getting annoyed

I know someone who just got into HSB. I think the different concentrations are slowly releasing them, but hopefully they get all out by the end of the week. I think it’s really unfair to give such short notice for open houses, so crossing my fingers y’all hear back soon!!!

Emory has REAL, which is like a work-study that you can use with Emory professors or local institutions (CDC, Carter Center, American Cancer Society, CARE, Task Force for Global Health, etc). They don't "match" you, but the applications open in August and you can apply to any that interest you! Everyone I know who was awarded REAL found a position and they continue posting them throughout the semester. The pay isn't great, but the experience is amazing.
