MPH Fall 2015: Applied, Accepted, Waitlisted, Rejected!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Thank you! Luckily my friend plans on moving with me so I have a roommate lined up. Might even think of getting a third. What tends to be the most affordable yet safe neighborhood?
Are you looking more at apartment complex/gated communities or houses?

I quite like the north druid hills/toco hills area. There's a big jewish community there so there's always people walking around. I think it's very safe. There are lots of apartments and gated communities around here which I think is a plus cause ours has a tennis court, workout room, pool which is nice for when you don't want to work out at emory. It also close enough that if you don't want to drive, could potentially bike.

I know a lot of grad students also like to live in north Decatur area. Not sure about the apartments, but friends have rented split houses there and they all have back yards and parking spaces that are away from major roads and are very residential so great for running outside and what not. Plus lots of bars in the area.

Both of these places are like 15 min away from each other, so meeting up with people and going to bars is very easy.

Also! If anyone is looking to adopt a cat in the emory area/ when you move to Atlanta, I have a great recommendation 🙂

Does anybody know much about UCLA's program? It seems like a decent size but it doesn't seem to be talked about much compared to places like Emory and JHU. I mostly applied to East coast schools but I was wondering if anyone knew offhand the benefits of a Ucla mph or Los Angeles. I heard they were good for community health but I applied for Epi of Infectious disease. Any input at all would be helpful, I'm really struggling to make a decision on where to visit/consider.
Any input on these comparisons?
UCLA vs Yale?
UCLA vs Emory?
UCLA vs UPitt?

UCLA's Epi department mainly focuses on chronic disease epi and injury epi and prevention. There is infectious disease work going on, but not in the scale as other schools. The reason I did not apply to UCLA was that many of the people who were doing work in IDE were adjunct faculty, so they wouldn't be available for advising. The place to go for IDE in California is Berkeley.

I think when it comes to deciding between top schools, what you want to consider is where you'd like to live/work after graduation and if there are any professors you'd like to work with based on their research interests. I also think that Emory probably has the best rep of the group for ID but they are all good schools.

Not sure if you guys saw yet, but someone posted his/her Columbia PhD decision on the Grad Cafe. Hopefully this means that MPH decisions are going to come out soon!

Unfortunately since we looked exclusively at Apartments I can't tell you much about the house prices there but I've been in the Scottdale area before and it has some very nice residential areas and from my experience relatively quiet. It is super close to the farmer's market which is a huge plus. I unfortunately don't know much about Kirkwood and Reynolstown but they are a lot closer to the city, so I would be concerned about the traffic and commute. I personally know quite a few people in the grad programs that live in decatur area (not downtown but outside of that area) that very safe and not expensive considering they are living on their stipend.

1. Most people I know live in the North/Druid hills/Decatur/ Buckhead areas. There are some nice apartments/ houses for rent, most of which are very family friendly/grad school friendly and they don't allow undergraduates. You could live alone, I would recommend having a roommate. It makes things much more cost efficient.
2. I know that when my bf first moved here, he and his roommate found their apartment very soon. She actually just did some online searches and then when she came down to visit for the weekend, they took a look at some of the places and signed a lease that weekend. I think if you want to be within walking distance to Emory, maybe start looking early. But if you don't mind driving even 5-15 min, I wouldn't worry about the hurry. There are plenty of apartments, it just really depends on your pricepoints
3. Emory is about 15-30 minutes from downtown depending on traffic. I personally wouldn't recommend driving in. I hate the highways around here. Just take the Marta (about 15-20 min ride)

This is great advice, I just want to add to this since I currently live in (well just outside of) Atlanta.

1. As mentioned North/Druid Hills/Decatur/Buckhead are all great areas to live. The rent is probably going to run a little higher in the Buckhead area, but it's a great area and most of the apartments are very close to Marta stations. Another good location is Brookhaven. It's a little bit further, but the rent is cheap and it's pretty quiet.
2. The traffic in Atlanta is definitely a pain. Lots of cars, terrible drivers, poorly organized systems. I second the recommendation to Marta into Emory. Additionally, parking at Emory is expensive (I believe it's roughly $600 for the pass).

Congrats on your acceptances!! How'd you hear back from UGA? Email/Website? I applied mid-Nov and haven't heard back 🙁

Nevermind...the post was edited. Now it says that he/she received an interview request 🙁

🙁 what program did you apply for?

Social and Behavioral - I do feel better in that their class sizes are very small (which I definitely consider a plus personally!) and that I don't have particularly outstanding experience showing my interest. Yikes, forgot since high school senior year how much that stings, though, lol.

Thanks! I checked my gradstatus portal, and my status changed to "Applicant Accepted Offer" but there was no explanation so I had to call admissions to find out and they told me! I got an official letter in the mail from the Graduate School a week later.

Yeah - I'm not super confident that I'll get into Yale either, especially because of their extremely small class sizes. The Advanced MPH is just 15 students!!

When did you apply? I applied to social and behavioral too, but haven't heard anything.

Wow. 😱 Regardless, I hope you'll be one of the...well, I don't know how many they actually admit, but I hope you're one of them!!

I applied 12/1 (was already verified). Hopefully you having not heard yet is good news?

Thank you!! I hope you guys get the good news soon as well! They have not updated the Apply Yourself portal. I just got an email recommending me for admission. So technically, I haven't even gotten in yet.
Sorry to be a bug about this but has UNC updated the ApplyYourself portal with your acceptance yet? I have had no notifications or changes to status so I'm just wondering if they have sent out the first round of decisions yet. Thanks!

Oo ok! Yes I got the complete application I think December 19th...I'm not hopeful, but good to hear they are rolling out decisions. Sorry to hear, but everyone goes where they are meant to!

You're not bothering me don't apologize! I just checked for you and nothing has changed. I still haven't received my official acceptance letter though so I wouldn't imagine I would see anything until then anyway.

This is true! Their program is not an exact match with my goals; it is the closest program Yale has to what I'm looking for, though. Yep, I'm going to go with they were being super compassionate and knew they weren't right fit for me. Yep. Still going with that. Nah, I mean, I just wasn't a competitive applicant for the number of slots they have.

I did appreciate their rejection email, though. It was helpful for putting all of this in perspective.

Your application for admission to the Master of Public Health program at Yale University has been reviewed. We regret to inform you that you were not accepted to our program.

Each applicant’s file is reviewed thoroughly and given careful and fair consideration before a decision is determined. We received a large number of competitive applications for this class. The School of Public Health is however very small and therefore admission to the program is extremely selective.

Thank you for your interest in the Yale School of Public Health. We wish you success in reaching your goals for professional development.

I'm nervous about this too. I really like the idea of small cohorts--I chose a PhD program with small cohorts too. But then it's much harder to get a spot!

Did you apply for applied biostats and epi?

No, Global Health. I did apply super late though - Jan 14th, so I probably shouldn't expect to hear anything for another 2 weeks at least.

I did my portion of the application (for biostats/epi) in December, but it wasn't complete and verified until some time in January. Here's hoping we both get good news!

Congratz! Early too!

Congrats! You got an acceptance much earlier than normal.

Holy cheese! Maybe they're just super on the ball this year? It says I was accepted into my second choice certificate, Social Determinants of Health...which is totally fine...and weird...I didn't even know I had put that one second - I thought I had actually put it first? But maybe not? Eh...whatever. Good luck to everyone at all the things and all the places! Super hyper now, sorry...!!!!

Rejected at Yale. Boo

Same. :-(

Me too! But given the size, I wasn't surprised. Plus, it's ranked is below BU, so I don't mind at all. I was chronic disease epi. Thanks, Yale, for the birthday present! Joking aside, I knew it would be today and it's fine, because this morning I got a call from BU and got to talk to several awesome people, so that was an awesome birthday gift!

I got an email from Hopkins Financial Aid for the link to their portal. Did anyone else get it?

Congratulations, everyone!

Sigh. Now I'm going to hit refresh on my email all night. Did everyone who has heard from Columbia apply early?

Wow! Seems's like a lot of people heard back from schools today. Congratulations everyone that got accepted.
It's the weekend - I can't even hope to hear something for the next TWO WHOLE freaking days!!
