MPH / MSPH 2021: Applied, Accepted, Waitlisted, Rejected, Attending

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I emailed Yale and received a reply that they do not adjust scholarship information after it's offered unfortunately

Was that a flat out "no" from them or it was specific to your case. I was planning on sending them a appeal but not sure if that would be good based on what you mentioned.

HSPH Accelerated 45 HP- no decision yet! Correct me if I’m wrong, but I have not seen any Accelerated Health Policy decision.

HSPH SBS/HBS 45 where y'all at? Nothing from Harvard today 😩

Sorry to hear the rejections from Harvard. I am still waiting for my decision letter from the Harvard. I got accepted by the Yale this Monday and just got an email from their financial office stating costs information. It did not mention I was award the scholarship. Does it mean I didn’t get any? Thank you!

I just recently received final grades for two self-paced courses that I was taking--both of which are As in Statistics and Immunology. I'm still waiting to hear back from some schools, so do you think it's worth it at this point to update schools given that it's so late in the cycle?

Has anybody heard back from Emory? My application has be under review since early January. 😢

Do y'all think your dream school is worth going 60k into debt when you could go somewhere else and take out only half in loans?
That is my current dilemma. I could choose the top program and go into 75k-100k worth of debt or go to my state school at a quarter of the cost. For the salary outcome I’m really questioning if choosing the better ranked and more recognized program is worth it.

did the emory COA for MPH really jump from $60k for 2019-2020 to $72k for 2020-2021 or am I calculating the numbers wrong?
From the webinar yesterday they said low COA was $54,922, medium $60,098, high $64,728 (varying generally on housing/living expenses) but I'm not sure what year they based it on. They did say anticipated billed cost for 21-22 was $37,900 (tuition and fees only) to be finalized sometime this month. Maybe double check the tuition increase - they said it's usually 3%.

Only if you think your dream school is worth the debt. I went to a mid-ranked (for PH) school in-state for undergrad with limited faculty in my research area (tropical/vector-borne/zoonotic infectious disease epidemiology). UW, where I'll be going, on the other hand, is highly-ranked and has considerably more research in my field than my in-state school. To me, the higher price is worth it because I don't want to stay stagnated by staying in-state even though it's considerably cheaper. I am justifying the higher cost because I expect to get an RA/GA position to cover tuition and will be trying to establish residency after my first year (I intend to live in Seattle). If you went to an already great school for your field for undergrad, it may not be worth it.

Don't worry. You will hear from them within 10 days about any scholarship.

Had a dream last night that I was refreshing my browser for school decisions

For me, no decisions yet from Harvard SBS 45 and was supposed to hear back from Yale ~4 days ago. Internalizing “no news is good news” has become increasingly difficult!

I’m starting to wonder if no news really is good news regarding Harvard, or if every week I don’t get a rejection isn’t worth the anxiety 😅

They said on a financial aid webinar that due to their structure of distributing awards, they don't make changes. Sounded to me like there's no room for an appeal for anyone.

Should I wait until Columbia / Johns Hopkins sends out scholarship information to negotiate it (or at least an intro email)? I am so grateful that I received a lot from Yale and want to see if Columbia / Johns Hopkins could match that (I doubt it but it's worth a try)! I just don't know when exactly to send the email.

I can speak for Columbia – I just sent an email to negotiate more aid, and they said they 1) do not match offers from other programs and 2) will not start considering appeals until April.

Thank you! This is really helpful.

I got accepted last night into the Epi program, I am not sure which program you applied or if they are all going at different paces. For context I applied 1/29, under review 2/5, accepted 3/3. I hope you hear soon!

Has anyone gotten their financial aid package from Hopkins yet?
I am waiting! I emailed them this week and this was their response:

We process applications on a rolling basis, our priority filing date is March 15th. This date assures that we get all applications received by the filing date processed before the April 15th Admissions Acceptance date. Our processing takes approximately 2-4 weeks from when the application is complete. (I believe they are talking about the SIS application).

Scholarships are awarded by our academic departments/programs. All admitted students are automatically considered for any available scholarship funding and would receive notice of award directly from their department/program. Information about scholarships and other sources of funding can be found on our website here, here, and here.

Give it 10 days. If nothing by then i'd assume no.

There don't seem to be many of you considering Tufts out there, but if you are and you submitted all financial info by the priority deadline you should hear back about aid by the end of March!

I was debating the same thing. I can’t see myself being in debt that much for one degree. Does your school offer tuition wavers?
I don't think so :'( I already got a nice scholarship from them but I'd still be looking at 60k of debt. Also, as an international student who'd be earning less abroad than I would be earning in the U.S. the cost feels even that much greater 🙁(

Rejected from UNC 🙁 This one really stung, and now I am starting to question the validity of my application. I was waitlisted at BU and that and UNC were my top, Yale a close second. Still have not heard from Yale but this makes me way way less hopeful.

Has anyone been able to squeeze any more money out of Yale after receiving scholarship information? I dream of going but I am pretty sure I will be 90k deep after receiving the degree.
In one of Yale's Zoom Q+A's, Mary Keefe said that Yale doesn't match or appeal scholarship offers because they give out as much as they can during the first go around. So at this point, I think it's mostly just people declining offers and maybe their award is recycled to others

Did you receive a notification? I’ve heard nothing from them regarding aid!

Also didn't get in to Harvard... this one really hurts.

This may be a dumb/pathetic question, but has anyone successfully asked a school why they didn't get in? Not in those exact words, obviously. I have been messaging with an Admissions person in the past and would be curious to learn what about my application didn't quite fit. Lucky to have gotten into some great options, but since I am likely deferring for a year, I'm now heavily considering reapplying to Harvard next year.
