MPH / MSPH 2021: Applied, Accepted, Waitlisted, Rejected, Attending

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
This morning, UC Davis took me off the waitlist and offered me a seat in their MPH program. I probably would've ended up at this program if I didn't already commit to JHU and will be declining the offer. I know there were a few people wanting to attend UC Davis here and hope that this redirects a seat towards one of you!

EDIT: oh my goodness, don't know how autocorrect got 'purgatory' from my intended word: WAIT LIST. Roflcoptors :smack:

I don’t trust U.S. News that much as they rank all types of school to sell their publication, and the rankings aren’t from a student’s perspective but from faculty rankings which are biased towards bigger schools and schools that are concentrated in a given region. Really great schools don’t do as well as they should as faculty in schools in concentrated regions are more likely to rank their region higher. Schools with big NIH grants get ranked higher, but they might have problems delivering on student opportunities in their region due to poor student services and a locally overcrowded market.

When ranked by a balance of quality, affordability and opportunity for a student's perspective one site (Top 25 Campus MPH Programs) ranked the schools based on U.S. News but also cost and return on investment (more applicable to students):

1. UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA, BERKELEY – SCHOOL OF PUBLIC HEALTH
2. UNIVERSITY OF WASHINGTON – SCHOOL OF PUBLIC HEALTH
3. UNIVERSITY OF NORTH CAROLINA AT CHAPEL HILL – GILLINGS SCHOOL OF GLOBAL PUBLIC HEALTH
4. UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA, LOS ANGELES – FIELDING SCHOOL OF PUBLIC HEALTH
5. UNIVERSITY OF MINNESOTA – SCHOOL OF PUBLIC HEALTH
6. TEXAS A&M UNIVERSITY HEALTH SCIENCE CENTER – SCHOOL OF PUBLIC HEALTH
7. GEORGE WASHINGTON UNIVERSITY – MILKEN INSTITUTE SCHOOL OF PUBLIC HEALTH
8. HARVARD UNIVERSITY – CHAN SCHOOL OF PUBLIC HEALTH
9. UNIVERSITY OF ILLINOIS AT CHICAGO – COLLEGE OF APPLIED HEALTH SCIENCES
10. EMORY UNIVERSITY – ROLLINS SCHOOL OF PUBLIC HEALTH
11. COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY – MAILMAN SCHOOL OF PUBLIC HEALTH
12. UNIVERSITY OF SOUTH FLORIDA – COLLEGE OF PUBLIC HEALTH
13. UNIVERSITY OF MICHIGAN – SCHOOL OF PUBLIC HEALTH
14. UNIVERSITY OF MARYLAND – SCHOOL OF PUBLIC HEALTH
15. UNIVERSITY OF IOWA – COLLEGE OF PUBLIC HEALTH
16. JOHNS HOPKINS UNIVERSITY – BLOOMBERG SCHOOL OF PUBLIC HEALTH
17. YALE UNIVERSITY – SCHOOL OF PUBLIC HEALTH
18. SAINT LOUIS UNIVERSITY – COLLEGE OF PUBLIC HEALTH AND SOCIAL JUSTICE
19. UNIVERSITY OF PITTSBURGH – PITT PUBLIC HEALTH
20. UNIVERSITY AT ALBANY – SCHOOL OF PUBLIC HEALTH
21. UNIVERSITY OF TEXAS HEALTH SCIENCE CENTER AT HOUSTON – SCHOOL OF PUBLIC HEALTH
22. UNIVERSITY OF MASSACHUSETTS – SCHOOL OF PUBLIC HEALTH AND HEALTH SCIENCES
23. DREXEL UNIVERSITY – DORNSIFE SCHOOL OF PUBLIC HEALTH

ok as people are making their decisions....let's discuss

People who are choosing high rank/big name/more reputable schools over lower ranking/less reputable ones that are cheaper and/or gave you scholarships, why? Would love y'alls input, especially if they're both top 10 schools!!

I see cost as a huge factor in my decision. But people are telling me to just take out loans and go to Hopkins over Emory bc the name will pay for itself. There's like absolutely no way to guarantee that, so I'm hesitant. Luckily both are very good schools, it's not like I'm missing out on much if I pick Emory, but idk if spending 80k on a Hopkins degree will make that much of a difference in terms of ROI...public health jobs usually don't pay that great starting out :/ If I go to Hopkins, I feel like I'll need to take out at least ~25k in loans (if scholarship money doesn't magically appear) vs being debt free w/ emory.

So how are you guys making the decision in regards to name/ranking and cost?? Which one matters more to you and why?

ugh can I just find $80k on the ground tomorrow or something lmao
I haven’t committed to Emory yet, but I’m choosing Emory over Hopkins because although Hopkins has been rated #1 on US News since US News started ranking in ‘94, the one year program is too expensive for what it’s really worth to someone who values networking ability and work experience. With the 5 terms in 11 months format (one of which is online), Johns Hopkins won’t offer the time needed for students to form the same relationships with peers and faculty as at two year programs. Johns Hopkins is also unable to fit in the summer internship because of its format, which at Emory and other programs is a necessary and important part of the degree. These are just a few of the major reasons that Johns Hopkins didn’t feel worth it to me (if it helps, I’m in HPM and planning on concentrating in healthcare management, so networking and connections to companies I’d like to work for in the future is key)

Why do you guys believe Yale is ranked lower? What is bringing them down?

Since these rankings are determined

“solely on the results of peer assessment surveys sent to deans, other administrators or faculty at accredited degree programs or schools in each discipline”

it seems entirely based on reputation, an aspect that Yale’s small class sizes don’t help out since those who take the survey have probably had less chances to interact with Yale graduates.

That's a good point, something I was considering as well. I was accepted for the part-time program, which is 2-3 years, but if the majority of my classes will be online, I'm not really sure how I'd be able to take advantage of what the school has to offer, especially since I feel like I can get what I need out of Emory for half the cost. It also doesn't help that I've just been feeling like a number in JHU's admission process. I've sent a lot of emails that didn't get any response back. I'm almost ready to commit to Emory.

To my understanding, Hopkins doesn't require an internship bc people already come into the program with experience. But even though I love my current job, I would like to apply my coursework towards something I have a greater interest in. I would like to do some research while I'm there, but that's not my end goal since I want to work after my MPH instead of dive right in to a PhD. I just think Emory would be a better fit for me, in that case. It's 99% decided at this point. Just gotta break the disappointing news to my south asian family haha. They're all rooting so hard for me to go to JHU, but this is my decision.

Is it worth emailing JHU again about the status of my financial aid? So far all I'm getting is this generic response that they'll get back to me but it's already been more than 5 weeks since they gave me the 2-4 week processing time and I need this information to make a decision on where I'm going to go...April 15th will be here soon

does anyone know if UMB offers graduate assistantships? and if yes, who should i contact to get one... ya girl broke and needs the discounted tuition

Hey! Have you checked to see if you have any outstanding tasks in your "to do" list of the financial aid portal? They can leave messages there in case you are missing anything or if they want another form

To get to the to do list, login to the JHU portal > financial aid > view financial aid> menu > to do list

I am still waiting as well but have to submit a document for them

HELP! UNC Health Behavior or Emory BSHES (if tuition is the same)? Any pros, cons, insight, experiences with either would be MUCH appreciated.

Yup, all of my docs have been completed and submitted since the 5 weeks I've been waiting

I think you should look at data on where people get jobs post-graduation. Most schools' sites have a section on where people end up after their MPH. From what I recall, most Brown MPH grads work in the Rhode Island area or Boston afterwards.
Thanks for your reply. When I looked at Brown's career outcomes they were just vaguely broken down by region with most in new england which is what I expected.

Hey guys! Still feeling pretty torn between GWU COPC and JHU GDEC. I like that JHU gives students direct opportunities to get involved with the community and has more opportunities for students to conduct research (as of right now, I'm planning on applying to med school afterwards). But I like that GWU's schedule (classes typically in the evening) is better for managing a job. I'm not really in the place where I can quit my job and people say it's extremely difficult to work during the 1st year at JHU. GW is of course also cheaper since they gave me aid and Hopkins only offered MTS. I appealed my scholarship at GWU and finished applying to receive a financial aid package from JHU; expecting to hear the results of both by April 15th (hopefully). Maybe that'll be the determining factor!

Is this through the JHU applicant portal page? Been clicking around for 5 minutes and can't locate the financial aid section to reveal a to-do list 😅. The closest thing I can find is the "funding your education" tab which is located in the center of the page.

The financial aid portal is the one with the SIS thing using the code they emailed you

Do you mind if I ask, did you have over the “required” 3.75 GPA for Columbia merit scholarships? I have only gotten my loan package already, but since I’m below that threshold, I wonder if I should even reach out regarding the actual financial aid package.
My GPA was above the threshold. I'm not sure what kind of merit-based scholarships they give out if you're below that. 🤔 Hopefully they give you something worthwhile, though. GPA isn't a great indicator on how great a student really is. So many intangibles and circumstances to consider.

For those who want to appeal for Columbia aid but are below that 3.75 GPA threshold, in previous years, students with GPAs below that threshold have been successful at getting merit aid. This might be different for appeals and may vary due to the unique circumstances this year, but my philosophy is it's not over until they say "no" lol (something I'm telling myself in my own appeal shenanigans!)

Out of curiosity, whats the largest merit scholarship columbia gives out?

Ok so I just learned something new and thought I'd share: The average US masters student takes out ~65k in loans! That doesn't include loans from undergrad either!

While loans aren't great, this makes me feel slightly better about the cost of some of my school options.

I would say UNC based on what I've heard from my colleagues who attended! I've also heard from two other students who were considering Emory that they felt they would be more of a "number" and that's why they chose not to attend. I personally enjoyed the UNC Health Behavior events more than the Emory BSHES events when I attended.

I feel like it's easy for demons to reject Peeps if they wanted to. That's just my theory. I knew someone who got waitlisted at NYU for bunny training and was taken off the purgatory by late April, so to be put on a purgatory means there's a chance!! They see something in you 🙂
demons = a-d-m-i-s-s-i-o-n-s
peeps = a-p-p-l-i-c-a-n-t-s
bunny training = mph?
purgatory = w-a-i-t-l-i-s-t!!

Declined Tulane. Does anybunny know how to decline Drexel? I can't figure out if there's something in the portal I'm missing or if I need to email someone directly.
I didn't see a decline button either for Drexel! I asked another person on here, since I saw they also declined Drexel. They sent an email to [email protected] and said they were super nice about it!

Is anybody still waiting to hear back from Brown? I applied on the deadline, 2/1. I haven't heard anything since from them...
I reached out to Brown on Monday, and they replied saying that there has been a delay, so it'll take a couple more weeks until we hear back. :blackeye:
