MPH / MSPH 2021: Applied, Accepted, Waitlisted, Rejected, Attending

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
y'all my BU portal still says accepted but I have not received the email..... I stg if this is another Columbia fluke I am gonna cry
Okay same I’m getting really worried I think because I know it CAN happen. But also it used our names so idk. Just crossing my fingers we get emailed on Monday. Of course this would happen with my top choice lol. Would anyone be willing to post a screenshot of what their portal looked like last week, bc I know you all got emails.

yeah it gives me comfort that they used our names, and (I work in admissions, and have a general understanding of how decisions are usually released) it is very possible that they changed the info on the portals and 'timed' our decision emails to not be released until Monday, in order to prevent an influx of emails or phone calls before the weekend. That's what I am ~assuming~ is probably the situation in order to salvage my sanity haha

I'm looking at the off-campus housing bc I have family. Housing in Berkeley, NYC, Boston are all so extremely expensive as I expected. Sigh.
How the heck do people survive going to schools there? HOW? Even when you get a full ride it'd still be **super** expensive.

I lived with my parents for a bit after college and was able to save a good bit of $$. Even so, I’m probably going to BU and I’ve accepted I will be taking out a lot of loans. I’ll try to get a TA or RA position to hopefully get tuition remission

LMAO rejected from SDSU. San Diego city wants me gone lol

Sorry to hear. If you don't mind me asking what is your application date of submission and how long it took to move to department review step? I submitted on 12/13.
Mine is stuck with preliminary eligibility step since 3 weeks. As decisions are out I am wondering if I should contact department or grad office?

Does anyone know what the graduate financial aid package for Emory is like? I’ve heard conflicting information and I’ve done a bunch of research and still can’t find a conclusive answer. I know about REAL as well, how likely is one to receive this?

Is there an income cut off or merit based or a combination? I’m looking for some stats and numbers on this if possible! $71K is a lot 🙁

I believe they have several things available.

1. Merit-based scholarships. These are given to students based on their academic achievements.

2. Institutional scholarships. These are given to students based on merits + needs.

3. REAL. This is basically another term for work-study at Rollins. These are given based on needs + first come first serve

4. You can take out loans for the rest after scholarships + REAL.

As for actual numbers, these vary considerably among individual students.

Emory and Umich are clearly excellent mph programs.

Could anyone discuss why you would choose one over the other? Both of them are ranked similarly on the US News Report. One is private, and the other is public.

Thanks.
Hi! UM Alum and UM/Emory applicant here! I think it boils down to a few areas that might be of importance to you (These are things I'm thinking about too). Depending on which program you're interested in, you one may be higher ranked than the other. I would look into that (Epi vs Epi or HBHE vs BSHE). UM has a huge alumni network which can be beneficial for internships and your career after the MPH. Emory has direct connections to the CDC (& some students work there while on campus) since it's across the street...Literally. Also, obviously, affordability. Personally, I know UM tries to offer as much scholarships and financial aid as possible. This might not be the case for Emory since it is a private institution. Hopefully this helps! Feel free to PM me.

Thank you for the info. I will definitely PM you when I must choose between the two later. Thanks 🤗

My timeline with SDSU was whack cuz their system is horrible. SDSU is pretty much applying to the same school 3 times. I submitted the SOPHAS 12/2 and did the CalState application like that same week idk. THEN the SDSU portal needed my transcripts again and I never sent them cuz it was making me mad on how complicated this school is to just apply. I procrastinated 2 month until February 1 to send my transcripts and i was rejected last night.

When I did grad school, I did a very unusal thing. I approached the director of the program about my issue with finding an affordable place to live close to campus because rent in that area is among the most expensive city to live in the nation. I did not want to rely on my car because traffic in that area is one of the worst in the nation. 🥺 I feared being stuck in traffic on exam days. I wanted an affordable place that I could simply walk to campus. The director was extremely kind. She emailed everyone in the program asking someone to help me. Amazingly, so many people responded. I ended up finding a extremely affordable place to live within walking distance to campus. I returned the favor by helping someone in needs in later years just like a lot of people tried to help me when I started the program.

My point is: Dont be afraid to reach out to the program's director for help with anything. They will direct you in the right direction to get help.

I wish you the best of luck.

Great tip!
I actually reached out to a few professors yesterday but I'll try the department director next!
Thanks!

Wait oh my gosh the same thing happened to me! My transcript got lost in the mail, so then I got it sent like in mid-january.

Does anyone have an idea of what school there mostly going to?
About 90% I'll be going to UMN. Its highly ranked, its my alma mater and I did a minor in public health so I know some of the faculty, I wouldn't have to move, and I just got a job at University of Minnesota Medical Center that's pretty high paying and its 0.7 ON so it would be pretty easy to do with school. I think other schools would need to give me a full ride at this point lol.

Thanks!

I began to decide on Yale for a bunch of reasons. I'll put one here, but will PM you with the rest of my thought process. I don't want to spam this thread with the windy road I took to my Yale obsession lol

I was feeling some pressure by the rankings too. Then, when I talked to professors at my own school and others, as well as public health professionals, I started to understand that Health Policy really exists in its own silo. Those rankings don't factor it in as much as the much more traditional public health disciplines. Just think about the quantity of faculty giving peer scores in Epi, MCH, Community Health, Health Promotion, etc. Policy exists in kind of its own world. Yale is one of, if not the, world leader in economics, public policy, and law. Since I'm very much going the politics and policy analysis track, Yale makes sense in that respect. I'd have access to all of those resources outside of the SPH. Hopkins, UNC, BU, etc. are unbelievably strong institutions for PH, but Yale, Columbia, Harvard, and Michigan (if you are looking for more of a management-focus in your education) are more so the leaders in HPM specifically (this is subject to my own research and observations. I'm very sorry if I'm just way off track here.)

Secondly, the way the program is structured to fit you is very attractive to me. The community is so strong and supportive at YSPH that it even impacts what classes you take. I know that I'll leave with an education that perfectly fits my needs, interests, and career path.
Thank you for this! It was really helpful! I'm still waiting on several decisions, but I'm already having trouble comparing the two I got into so far...

Applied to 4 schools and still haven’t heard back from any of them yet 🥲 the wait is killing meee
When did your SOPHAS app get verified? It took about 3 weeks for my fastest decision to come back. So expect around a 1 month wait. Good luck!

Yes, applied and received 1/15, accepted 2/4!
Thanks for the response! Was this for the Master's program or PhD? My application was verified and submitted on 1/13, and I keep hearing from them that I will be 'contacted soon about my application'.

It must feel good to have everything set already.

Many of us are still deciding, myself included. I got accepted to several programs, although I only applied to a very, very selective few. Even with having just a few selections, the decision on which one to commit to is hard enough. I will wait until I receive all admissions decisions before I decide.

The one thing I realized going this far into the app cycle is: There are programs that I did not give much thoughts on as compared to others when the app cycle began become more appealing as a few people in the admissions office reached out to me to tell me more about their program and the exceptionally attractive scholarship offer. I have not made my decision. I am still waiting for some admission decisions.

The more I read about Yale School of Public Health, the more I am liking it. Got an email to join the Facebook page for incoming students. I like the approach and connectedness. Nothing from Columbia, like this. However, the Emory application was very good. Waiting for HSPH to see how that pans out. I don't know if they will be as "nice" as YSPH.

Congrats that's amazing! I just looked at your info and it's really impressive that you got into MCH right out of undergrad. Now I regret not applying to the MCH program out of fear of not meeting the experience requirement. But also your stats are very impressive!
Thank you so much <3

Aww. I felt the Yale vibe too and I really really liked it. I hope I'll be able to join you soon. Anxiously waiting on Yale's emails........
Berkeley felt friendly and passionate too. But I still would pick Yale over Berkeley if Yale wants me 😭

Hopkins has been pretty friendly too. I like that they look at people as a whole

Going this far into the app cycle, I have had quite a few unexpectedly amazing surprises. When I began this admissions process, my heart was set on a single program primarily. Now that I have had the majority of admissions decisions, I am taken by surprise by some programs that I did not have nearly as much thought on as compared to that single program going into the admissions cycle. It was brought to my attention some amazing research projects done by faculty at those programs. Their training and focus in research perfectly align with what I have been doing. This makes my decision to commit to a single program so much more difficult at this point. I still have to wait for a few more admissions decisions before I seriously sit down to do the pros and cons of each program once I have everything on the table. It will not be an easy task for sure.

Does anyone wanna be neurotic about Harvard with me?

Dont worry. You will have the entire team on watch with you. Harvard has everyone's full attention because they will likely be the last program that many of us are waiting on 😅

does anyone have a time frame for jhu msph (popfam) or nyu mph? im aware they're rolling but if anyome has heard back from either, im just curious to know, thanks!

HSPH is most likely in 2 weeks. My last decision will be the JHU (for DrPH), they release decisions in March. I have also heard that UT Health (for PhD) could very well go into April. I am all over the place!!! Still finding my purpose in life 😎 😏

It's never too late to pursue our dreams.

For those who applied to UIC and got accepted- how long did it take for the admissions office to send information about your acceptance? I got my congratulations email from the department, but they said i should hear something from the Admissions office as well. It’s about to be a week or so since I’ve been accepted so I don’t know if I should reach out! I also am wondering if scholarship information came from the department or the admissions office, thank you!!

Harvard is the last school I’m really waiting on before I make my decision! I probably have close to zero chance of getting in though 😂 so trying not to get my hopes up
Awww, not to get your hopes up or anything, but you honestly never know. I applied to two reach schools and they both accepted me. I was honestly ready to get a bunch of rejections. They might see something in you that you don't 🙂 Good luck!

the portal is exploresph.bu.edu/firstnamelastname/landing/ just put your first and last name where it says that
@sap033 bookmark the page! I'm going to check every couple days, but also note they may be behind on reviewing...I saw a bunch of people post they got their acceptances + scholarship info already. My SOPHAS was verified around mid January. They sent an email saying they received SOPHAS, but I just got an email this week saying it was now under review o_o

For jhu I applied 12/23 and heard back 1/5! But I still haven't heard back from nyu either 😩

hello there-- I got my congrats email from the department I applied to on Jan 20th and a formal acceptance on my application portal on Feb 4th. I still haven't heard back on scholarship money, however :/
