Has it always been Tuesdays for Columbia? For all MPH concentrations?

I did a brief check through this thread and most have been on Tuesdays! At the beginning some got accepted on a Wednesday, but the majority have been on Tuesdays

Ok so I know a lot of people ask questions like this here so I don't mean to be repetitive but I feel like I do want some feedback- I keep telling myself that I really should go where ever I am able to establish a job or assistantship, or if not that, then wherever is cheapest. It would most likely end up being UMD which is instate for me.

But in all honesty I feel so pulled towards UNC, regardless of the fact that it would cost more and involve moving down there and paying rent. Part of it is because its such a renowned school, part of it is because it's Applied Epi and seems more suited to what I want to do than a more quantitative Epi program (like UMD), and also maybe due to the fact that I never really moved away for undergrad so the idea of an exciting adventure is really tempting. Anyone in a similar boat? Am I going to hate myself later for taking out loans?

There is also the instate tuition for second year to consider. As soon as you get down there, get a NC driver's license, register to vote, get your name on a lease, etc. to establish residency. Then second year will be instate tuition for you. From what I read, it is pretty easy. Even if you have to appeal, ppl get it.

Just remembered, Carolina and the town of Chapel Hill has a free bus service.

Yep, I'm definitely thinking about that- so if I stay here I'll probably stay with my family and not pay rent, but I definitely for see myself needing a new car for that daily commute. North Carolina would definitely be less car heavy so I could maybe make my 10 year old van stretch a bit longer.

Any of you strongly against roommates? There’s just something about living with a complete stranger that doesn’t sit well with me.

I lived alone for several years and LOVED it but moved in with a friend over the summer to cut costs. It has been great for fighting total isolation during the pandemic (especially since she has a car and I don't lol) but she is moving out of the country at the end of our lease and...I'm terrified about finding a new roomie! Most of my friends in this city are either living with partners or moving away. I'm especially nervous about not meshing with someone's pandemic safety practices but we'll all figure it out!!!

Some quick facts about me: 3.7 GPA, haven’t taken GRE yet but am usually a good test taker (scores 99th percentile on SAT/ACT), volunteered in a health and wellness program for about 1.5 years in college but stopped end of sophomore year to focus on research. Worked in a basic science research lab for 2 years also. Also have some significant leadership experience roles in college if that matters. Currently working in a private practice on the admin side.

Application Status: Congratulations on your offer. The University is processing the offer, in 1 to 2 business days the decision buttons will be available to you to indicate your decision.

Is this really how they tell us? No email or anything? Trying to figure out if this is legit.

I submitted mine on 1/24, as I just checked my portal, it still looks the same as the typical applicant portal, with the status being "submitted." Hoping it's good news for you tho!

There are still some good accredited in person and online MPH programs out there for the Fall...if you are not too picky about where you want to go. You can start the sophas application right now and get your recommendations and transcripts sent over asap. There are also some good programs out of the sophas application. The good thing about this application cycle is that because of COVID a lot of MPH programs waived the GRE requirement.

There may be some programs still accepting apps! Like others have mentioned, SOPHAS will display those available. If you're open to applying outside the states, a lot of programs in the UK have cutoffs in the summer - they also accept on a rolling basis though and some of them do fill up far before the deadline so be sure to act quickly! I just checked SOPHAS and Columbia has a general MPH that’s accepting apps until June, Emory is accepting apps till July, and GWU is accepting until March. There are so many more who are still accepting, but I wanted to make show that top programs are as well so it’s not like you’ll have to settle if you apply now.

It’s definitely not too late as long as you HUSTLE! Get in the application and transcript by the deadlines at least, schools will be more lenient about your recommendations but also try to get them in as soon as possible. Start asking your recommenders now because it’d be kind of unfair to be like “can you write my recommendation, it’s due in two weeks— thanks” you know? You want to give them some time.

But if this is what you want, go for it! Go all out. This year is perfect since they’re not requiring GREs. Good luck and feel free to reach out if I can help or something!

You should read the Tuition + Financial assistance/Scholarships on each school's site. Many of the schools I applied to consider you for merit scholarships once you submit FAFSA, but that's for US citizens only... I've seen a couple students post on here that they got a merit scholarship from Emory already; I think those students are US citizens. I think for Emory, they announce scholarships and funding (like work study) through the next few weeks (March).

If you want to save your spot at JHU and Emory before the Fullbright results, just pay your enrollment deposit. I would also email your program's admissions contact to ask if you can choose to defer even after you've paid the deposit.

I'm a total rookie regarding this since the Fulbright program will not guarantee that I will go to the schools I've been admitted to. 😵 I was worried that if I accepted the offer from JHU and Emory and defer, they will keep a space for me, but I end up not attending either one of the schools, or even both, because Fulbright and IIE will assign me to test for other schools. I was worried that the schools will blacklist me for life. 🤣

Does anyone here have experience with deferrals or know someone who has been through it? I did read on the declaration page when applying to HSPH that we strictly cannot defer, but what reasons will they probably accept? I heard from my advisor that her other advisee was granted a deferral from HSPH to 2021 (he applied in 2020), and hence he could apply to our government's special scholarship for the world's best universities. But his two friends who requested deferral with him were thrown to 2022 and 2023. 🤔

I totally understand where you're coming from! UMD is instate for me as well, but I also think curriculum-wise UNC was pulling me! I'm likely not going to either school, but you're welcome to DM me and we can chat some more about it! 😀

I've heard they were close to finishing up the fellowship lists. I'm probably not on any of those. I most likely don't meet most of the criteria for those fellowships. 😭
