MPH / MSPH 2021: Applied, Accepted, Waitlisted, Rejected, Attending

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Lots of anxiety on decisions. Also got into UW, Brown. Its a toss up between tuition, possibility of scholarships/fellowships, cost of living (young children), dog friendly housing etc. My head is going to explode. Not psyched about moving across country.
Me, too. Kids and a cat. I'm so stressed out about the options and everybody: stop bragging.

Has anyone submitted a financial appeal to BU yet? I just received my scholarship from Brown and if I can negotiate BU to 40% it’ll cost the same. This isn’t a huge jump because I’m already at 35%

Very cool! I think the MHS will set you up nicely. I'm wondering if the MPH being a bit more generalized when it comes to learning research skills/methods vs an MHS or MS is concerning for PhD candidacy. I only applied to one-year MPH programs, and have just started considering the PhD more seriously. I'm trying to determine if I'll have adequate opportunities to gain those skills and experiences for a PhD application during my MPH program. I'd imagine that I wouldn't have enough time and might have to pursue a research year.
I think that while the MHS is more research-focused compared to an MPH, I think both degrees prepare students well for a PhD, at least that's what I'm aware of with my mentors and professors (who've received MPHs before getting a PhD).

Hi everyone! Does anyone know if accepting an admissions offer affects merit scholarship decisions? I want to commit to Columbia (yay!) but I have not heard back about merit scholarships, yet. Thank you!

Is anyone deciding between Brown and BU? I’d love to hear pros/cons of each from anyone. I have my own list but am so undecided that maybe some has thought of something I haven’t? Feel free to PM me 🙂

does anyone know if brown has only sent out acceptances thus far? just trying to gauge if I haven't heard back bc I've been rejected

Columbia financial aid question - i emailed to ask for a timeline and they said that they only give need based aid to people who received pell grants or need based loans in undergrad. I had not heard of this before and am bummed now since I don't qualify but definitely need the money. For those who got need based aid, am I understanding this correctly?

I just got my acceptance letter to Brown this morning! For those still waiting to hear back from the school, you still have a chance. Don't give up!! I want to thank God for putting me into their program. I don't think I'm that qualified of an applicant if I'm being honest, haha

At a financial aid session, they said someone with an EFC greater than 11k would probably not qualify for need-based aid (I can't speak from my personal experience – I haven't gotten my package yet either)

Is anyone else waiting to hear from UCLA Community Health Sciences? I think I saw 1 or 2 folks accepted several weeks ago and now that it's March I just want to know 😥 I sent a generic thank you email to the admissions woman after an info session a few weeks ago and mentioned that I was excited to hear of a decision hoping that she would respond and give me a timeline, but I never got an email response.

Hi! So, for me it came down to that there weren’t as many mch opportunities at Brown than BU. I liked that they had the mch club at bu because I know it would be easier to network and find opportunities. Also, cost was a big thing!

Question-- you can pay your deposit to hold your seat and not attend right? You would just lose the money? I'm thinking of paying my deposit at one of my schools to start applying for assistantships. Thanks!

Wondering the same thing! Still haven’t heard back from my top choice but definitely need to apply for funding for my second choice and have to do so ASAP!

Yes I believe this is the case still. I did this last year and decided not to attend -- you just have to communicate with the program after you decide not to attend!

out of curiosity, how do you apply for assistantships? do you reach out to the faculty directly or go on the school's handshake? having trouble figuring this out.

Good question! I think it's different for every school. I have a friend that went to the school I'm looking at paying my deposit at (my second choice). She said she received a link for assistantships/jobs after she committed. I just want to make sure I can get out of the commitment if I get in my first choice.

Depends on the school but it’s usually a rat race contacting PI’s, career services, and searching university employment classifieds.

Contacting PI’s directly requesting a interest meeting is usually the most efficient.

Still waiting on them!! I sent them an email last week and also no response 🙃

$40K over 2 years from Columbia in merit aid!!!! (Nothing about need-based that I can see.) I'm literally sobbing, Columbia is my dream school and now it's actually happening. I ended up at my safety school for undergrad despite getting into my then-dream school as well because I couldn't afford it. Now I can finally attend my dream university and I am so so grateful.

got my first rejection today.. kinda bummed i am worried i wont get in anywhere :/
I wouldn’t worry too much!! My dad posed that outcome when I first applied. Not that he didn’t have faith I’d get in anywhere, but he knew it was going to be competitive and didn’t want me to be heartbroken if I didn’t. I now have three acceptances, one rejection, and just waiting for two other responses. My stats are pretty average too, I also only had a year and a half of a normal college experience to get any experiences in for my application. The universe just has different plans for you and it wasn’t that program! 😊

Congrats! This is my dream, hopefully my GPA is good enough 😬. When did you apply and get accepted if you don’t mind?

Anyone else get an email from BU about the Dean's scholarship application? I already declined my acceptance offer to BU because I didn't think I'd get more aid besides the 35%, but am now regretting it bc I didn't know I could potentially get 100% scholarship ahhhhh

I'm sorry, it must be upsetting, I agree with the poster above that you will end up where you need to be! Can I ask what school it was? I am waiting to hear from 2 schools and I am worried most of them are sending out rejections at this point.
