MPH / MSPH 2021: Applied, Accepted, Waitlisted, Rejected, Attending

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I got a rejection late yesterday - but my stats were not impressive and it was a reach school for me. Hang in there, hopefully your acceptance will be coming soon!
i’m sorry to hear that.. don’t sell yourself short though, there’s a reason and passion behind why you’re going into public health. wherever you end up is lucky to have you! and thank you so much🥺

Hello everyone! I just wanted to quickly share my academic story so that it hopefully motivates anyone who may be hesitant to apply in future cycles because of their GPA:

As you can probably see in my stats below, I got a 3.2 GPA. This is very low. I struggled a lot during my first few years of college -- I had health issues I had to overcome and a lot of anxiety caused from juggling pre-med life and family life. This eventually led to me being academically dismissed during my 3rd year. I really wanted to stay motivated to go back to school ASAP so I chose to volunteer at a community health center. This was difficult to do because I was also working full-time, but I managed to make it work. 6 months and 3 summer classes later, I gained readmission. I came back, switched my major, and graduated after my 5th year. I even managed to complete a global health study abroad program! During my gap years, I did AmeriCorps and worked as a Quality Improvement Specialist. I'm so happy that I took some gap years because working-full time showed me that what I really wanted is a career in public health.

I applied to MPH programs being fully prepared to have to apply a second time. I thought that all these schools would reject me because of my academic dismissal...but they didn't. I'm incredibly grateful that they gave me a chance and I hope that they do the same for other future applicants with a similar story. We are more than just our GPA and our resilience highlights our potential as great leaders in public health.

School: University of California | Major/Minor: B.A. Spanish Community and Culture w/ Minor in Global Health | GPA: 3.2 | GRE: Didn't take
Applied: Yale, BU, GWU, UCLA, UPitt, Northwestern, OHSU-PSU, CDrewU
Accepted: Yale (3/9), GWU (2/5 +40%), BU (2/20 +25%), UPitt (3/10), Northwestern (2/18 +35%), CDrewU (2/11)
Pending: UCLA, OHSU-PSU
Thank you so much for sharing like this. I was in the same boat this year - I was so hesitant to apply because I knew my GPA would be under 3.0. If it wasn't for people like you posting your stats, updating these threads, and encouraging those of us who felt hopeless I would have never had to courage to apply to MPH programs, let alone apply to schools that I would have considered a "reach" like UNC, where I am now attending.

Congratulations on your acceptances but more importantly your perseverance. Thank you for allowing us to learn from and be inspired by your story.

Does anyone have any contacts of students in the ScM or MHS program at Hopkins? Preferably someone who was there pre-pandemic. Would love to connect with them and learn about their experience.
I would reach out to the director of your MHS program! I did and they got me connected to two students, one who graduated 2019 and one who’s a current student during the pandemic! Feel free to DM if you have more questions!

Having trouble deciding between BU (Health policy and law) and GWU (global health policy). I went to BU for my undergrad and know the program pretty well and how good it is, but would love to be somewhere new! Does anyone know about their difference in ranking or how the programs compare?

ah, just received my financial aid offer letter from Columbia and it doesn't seem like I got any merit/ need-based scholarships. This is very unfortunate. Does anyone know how to appeal?
i believe you cant appeal until april

In the same boat! Has anyone gotten merit/need based scholarships who might know how amenable to appeals Columbia? I really don’t want to be doing this completely on loans 😓

Hi everyone! I know we’re all eagerly awaiting for our financial aid packages to come through (even though some schools said we’d hear back by early March 🥲). I had a question regarding how scholarships are awarded. Do the professors from that department nominate individuals? I received a decent scholarship from GWU, but I see myself committing to another school who has a great curriculum. Tuition between both schools is about the same after the scholarship, but I feel like maybe I’m discounting GWU too soon? What if maybe a professor at GWU was interested/ willing to have me on a research project? If anyone has any insight I would greatly appreciate it!

Hey everyone! I decided to go to UCLA in Epi and I wanted to reach out to see if there's a group/anyone wants to connect! I got into Columbia but not too hopeful about financial aid. Rejected from Berkeley. Also applied to UCI and I have no idea what's going on there cause they haven't notified me of anything! So I think I've made my final decision so far! I hope all you guys are able to make a decision and get into the school you want! Even though I wasn't here long, was really helpful to hear the opinions of everyone!!

Could someone tell me the actual cost of tuition for GWU? Different people are saying different numbers. I had done the math and it is around 65K with the numbers they list on the website. However, 3 people have said it's 82K? I will be doing the MPH Global Epi program- 2 years, 4 semesters. I just don't know how people got from 65 to 82 K? And I am just looking for the cost of tuition not including any living costs. Thank you!

GW charges per credit, not per semester. Most programs are 45 credits @ $1,825 per credit =$82,125. That's before a tuition increase Y2.

Harvard folks who are still waiting - I just got this response to an email: “We are hoping to have all decisions sent out by the end of next week.”

We’re so close - hang in there!!

Thank you for this update! I don't want to be a "Debbie Downer" but I feel the chance of rejection is more likely for those of us still waiting to hear back. Admitted students week is March 22nd (Events). Individual fields of study are already accepting registration from admitted students. Of course, anything could happen and it's not over until it's over. I'd of course love to be wrong and that some of us may still have a chance!

Does anyone know if you get notified/emailed by Columbia financial aid about any awards or do you just check your portal? Mine is saying that they're missing my FAFSA, but I checked my FAFSA and it said that it was sent to Columbia when I was applying. Just emailed them to confirm, so waiting on that right now. Does anyone know if this is an error?

Did you ask financial aid whether they have your ssn entered into the system?

Someone mentioned on GroupMe that they had confirmed with Columbia that they had their SSN but was still notified at a later time of a FAFSA issue and had trouble resolving it. It sounds like an internal issue on their end, so you’re certainly not alone!

Hey I'm down to connect! I haven't made my final decision yet, but UCLA is where I'm leaning towards! I'm also considering UW, but the in state tuition for UCLA is sounding a lot nicer. Feel free to DM me!

I feel (only speaking for myself) that I have probably been rejected. I knew applying it was a long shot and still not hearing anything I’m really preparing myself for the R 😂

Hi all, I just received an acceptance to JHU MHS in HSB program. Did anyone receive a separate financial aid/scholarship letter or is the 75% off from the second year tuition the only financial support the school provides? Thank you!

How does MHS compare to MPH in your opinion? I applied to multiple programs at JHU, therefore would need to decide soon.

Did anyone get their financial aid from the University of MN yet? I’m about to write an email tomorrow.

Very helpful thanks. Did they give any hints as to how long the waitlist is and usually what percentage of students on the waitlist get admitted? Also are they really releasing decisions May 15? Seems so late....
Sorry I just saw this! I didn’t ask about the number of people on the waitlist. They said that May 15th is the latest that they will let us know and there’s a chance it will be earlier. I assume it won’t be until after the April 15th decision deadline but there are also people who get extensions so who knows 🤷‍♀️

I swear I've only seen like 2 people on here say they got accepted at Harvard. Hopefully there will be more good news

There has been a bunch. I remember it was last week or so? Two wks ago? Mostly in the 45 one though. I didn't see anyone got into the 80 one, and maybe two got into the 65.

Yeah I received an email from them early February about a missing SSN, so I emailed them, and they said it was an error on their end and that they actually had it. But now I'm just receiving messages about my FAFSA.
