MPH / MSPH 2021: Applied, Accepted, Waitlisted, Rejected, Attending

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Hi! GW also told me I would hear by today. I sent in my appeal on 2/12, so I am getting frustrated I have not heard anything! When did you contact BU about an increased scholarship? I emailed last night, I was just wondering how long it took for you?
GW told me around March 15th on 2/26. BU told me "around the middle of the month" on 3/3!

I still haven't heard back from Berkeley regarding merit/need-based scholarship so I'm guessing that's a no lol. Anyone else?

Berkeley is sort of my last hope. I received some scholarship from Harvard & Yale (25% & 60% respectively) but alll things considered, its just not a wise investment for me.
I actually just emailed them about this and my department (epi/biostats) said everyone who gets a merit/need-based scholarship will be notified before April 15. The general financial aid department said all scholarships have been sent out, but as students decline their offers that money will be reallocated to other students.

So, the concentration we put on our applications is non-binding and had no bearing on our application. We choose our concentrations officially 4 weeks into class. They didn’t explicitly state how easy it was to change once you do that. But, Dean Galea kept saying you’re not married to your concentration in the student coffee chat a few weeks ago. Personally, I will probably do the 2-year option because I’m from the area and plan on setting there for at least a few years. I also have a sucky stress tolerance at times.
Thank you so much! Good Luck!

OMGGGG I got into MHS in Epi at Johns Hopkins!!!

After waiting for GDEC and HPM decisions to no avail, I applied to Epi on 3/1 and got in LOL 😆
This morning I received an email from their staff about "This Week in Epi" and I was like...does this mean I got in??? Then I checked my portal a few hours later and voila...

JHU said I'd get 75% off my second year tuition. Their website says each year's tuition is $59,184. So I guess I'd get $44,388 off? 🤓

I have a feeling columbia puts you on the waitlist because they havent had the chance to look through all applications yet. Not because you have a chance of getting in. Thoughts?
I feel like it's easy for admissions to reject applicants if they wanted to. That's just my theory. I knew someone who got waitlisted at NYU for undergrad and was taken off the waitlist by late April, so to be put on a waitlist means there's a chance!! They see something in you 🙂

Welp, this is it for me! Thanks to everyone for providing comfort and company throughout such a stressful time! To future SDNers looking through this thread, you got this! If my 3.07 (2.6 major GPA) and the last-minute spur-of-the-moment decision to apply can get me into my absolute dream school, y'all got this!!!!!

Will be thinking of all your kindness at Columbia!

So did everyone who got into Columbia so far get their fin aid notification? I haven't yet,

I haven't yet either. In fact, they said they were missing my FAFSA, but when I checked FSA, it said it was sent to them. I emailed Columbia to confirm, but still haven't heard back yet.

And here I thought April 15th was far enough in the future that we all would've received financial aid information by now. Oh, how naive I am.

Sooo still nothing from them -_- I’m imagining it’s a rejection at this point for me. I applied for a fellowship through them as well and nothing. Anyone receive an Epi acceptance at U of Arizona?
I heard back, I was rejected from the epidemiology program but I also applied to the health policy track and am still waiting to hear back them. Best wishes!

Goodness gracious! I am sorry to hear that wild goose chase. Fingers crossed they come through soon.

Got accepted to Yale SBS and UNC global health! I was mentally ready to commit to UNC and then Yale came out of the blue with +$60k and now I'm so undecided where to go... if anyone has any insight about both programs, it would be much appreciated. And congratulations to everyone for making it this far!!
That's me a few days ago, plus JHU. I decided on Yale. 😄 It's the most cost-effective for me overall.

I can make this easy. Let's just all go to Yale and get this admission cycle over with!!!

I'll do the asking for you all -

Welp. I have officially committed to Yale! It ended up being the best option for me, personally, especially with my research focus. I could not be more excited. Thank you to everyone who has helped advise me while I made this decision! It took about a month of me pretty much pulling my hair out as I tried to figure out what was best, but I am confident that I have come to the best conclusion for me. I look forward to meeting all you other new Yalies in New Haven and hopefully crossing paths with the rest of you in our careers! I have no doubt that you will all do incredible things for the world 🙂

Hello all! Does anyone have any insight into the UNC MPH program in Applied Epidemiology? I'm deciding between that and Emory (Epi). I'm looking for a program focused on quantitative skills and would eventually like to work in research or consulting. I can see from the coursework for Emory that it's pretty focused on quantitative skills and has a lot of SAS coursework and was wondering if UNC is also comparable? I'm potentially changing careers (currently in a STEM field) and am new to public health so am looking to gain some skills in that area. UNC is also more affordable if I'm able to pay in-state tuition for the 2nd year so that is a factor as well.
Would love to hear from anyone interested in these programs. Thank you!

Urgent Ask: Does anyone have an email address for an actual human at the GW admissions department (residential MPH, not online)?

After waiting and waiting I finally emailed the program director and they basically said my application was lost and suggested I reach out to the admissions department again. I asked him for a best contact, and he said to call. [I've already called, and they're not taking calls]. Note: I emailed the generic admissions email back in February and never received a response.

This is the only one I have, hopefully this isn't the person you've already been in contact with: [email protected] Tania Rachkoskie - director of admissions

Thank you! I only emailed the generic email address and no one responded. I finally decided to email the actual director of my academic program, who then said he doesn't see my application in the queue.

But he didn't give me a contact to follow up with other than the main line number. Anyhow, a frustrating situation to say the least. Thank you very much for your quick response.

I got an email on Jan 6 from GW that my application was routed for review... I emailed the generic email twice in February after the 4-6 week window was over to check in... no response
check your sophas?

Hi there, I'm a current GW policy student! Being in DC for health policy is really just the place to be, in my opinion, but I admit I am biased. However, the difference between 60 and 77k is a lot of money, and I can understand why you're torn.

As someone who has lived in both Boston and now DC, I like both cities but prefer DC. The difference in ranking doesn't mean as much as the location - e.g. it's easier to get a job in DC if you go to school there, and same with BU. Where do you want to end up?

Also, I'm not sure how BU works, but the vast majority of GW classes start after 4pm, so you can work full or part time which can significantly ease the financial burden. I work full time (was working full time before starting school) and I go to school part time. Plenty of GW students go part time if they work a lot.
Thank you so much for your input! I feel like I would prefer to live in DC postgrad, but I've never been to Boston so it's hard to know for sure. I'm a little nervous about working while managing grad school because I haven't worked since the pandemic started, but knowing that the class schedule is conducive to working is helpful! I feel like there are probably more PH policy jobs in DC so I'd end up moving there anyways, but I guess I'm just hoping that the difference in cost is worth it in the long run. Thank you again!

Congrats! Make sure you double check with financial aid. I got that same offer and I asked more details how it worked. The discount is applied 25% per quarter. So youd have three terms with a 25% off per term. Or unless I’m misunderstanding.

Hi everyone! Does anyone know if we can appeal NYU’s scholarship that we received with our acceptance?

Wow congrats to you too!!! 🙂 Thank you for clarifying! From your screenshot, what I understood was “25% of the total award would be applied each quarter”. That means we’d get ~11k off each quarter (if we chose the 75% off in second year option). This is different from “25% off from each quarter’s tuition”. What do you think?

I’m liking that interpretation haha!

Did anyone receive any scholarships with the JHU MPH offer letter? Did we have to apply separately to scholarships or SOPHAS application was sufficient?

I received $18k from JHU but it came in a few weeks after my acceptance. This is for the one-year MPH program. I don't think so unless you are applying for specific fellowships- I only turned in my SOPHAS application.
