MPH / MSPH 2021: Applied, Accepted, Waitlisted, Rejected, Attending

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Rejected from Harvard SPH-65 but hey Yale isn't too bad 😉 So happy to finally make a decision after all that waiting on HSPH! Anybody have any info about TAships at Yale?
I've heard that TAships at Yale for Masters students are rare but still possible, and students can TA anywhere in the school, not just at public health. I don't think we'll be able to see what opportunities are available until the summer though

Update in case anyone read my posts from last night. I was accepted to GW. There was just some technical error in notifying me. For those still waiting to hear from programs [especially if you applied by the priority deadline], I would definitely check in -- even if you get a generic response from admissions, some response is better than no response. Good luck!

Is anyone here doing a JD/MPH? Or will obtain their JD in the future after doing their MPH? If so, what is your reason for doing so and what do you plan to do with your degree as far as career/job title?

Okay this might be a goofy quesiton, but are any of y'all responding directly to emails with acceptance info/scholarship info if they came from an individual rather than a department? It feels weird to receive a congratulations and not say thank you, but maybe that's just how it goes?

OMG I have just been offered a REAL opportunity from Emory 👀 I didnt expect this honor. They might notice my yesterday's post I made on here that I'm deciding on Emory lol.
congrats! how were you notified? and what were your stats if you don’t mind me asking? i’ve been praying for REAL but still no word 🙁

Declined my UMich admission offer. Didn't get a scholarship and it's just way too expensive out of state. Plus I just think other schools are a better fit for me.

If anyone else is having a really tough time deciding between Emory, JHU, and GW, let me know how you're deciding. I'm so torn 😭 😭 😭

I'm with you! Currently struggling between Emory, JHU & Umich. I haven't received any financial info from any of them, so it's making it unnecessarily hard to decide 🙁

Finances are a huge part of my decision as well. I feel a HUGE pull towards Emory bc of the merit scholarship. But the JHU part-time MPH program allows me to keep working full time so I have a stable income (might just reduce my hours a bit, since my job has that kind of flexibility). GW is within commuting distance for me, so I can still stay at home with my family and not worry about DC rent. Ugh. They're ALL realistic financially for me, which is what makes this decision a billion times more difficult!!!!! I don't know what to do. I didn't think I would get into all of them. Plus 2 of them with scholarship offers. I feel like crying. 😭😭😭😭

Hi all! Since I finally decided on where I am attending, and I have been lurking in this thread for a year, I thought that I would post my stats so that it can help others like you all in this thread have helped me!

Undergraduate School/School type: mid-size SEC school, graduated 2020
Undergrad GPA/Major GPA: 3.25
Major/Minor: Neuroscience major, Psychology and Chinese Language & Culture minors

Experience/research: Currently taking a gap year working in a pediatric diabetes lab, worked as an undergraduate research assistant for 2 years, had 4 years of work experience with an academic summer program for high schoolers, one semester as an undergraduate learning assistant, various volunteer experiences throughout undergrad

Letters of Rec: My current PI, my boss from the academic summer program, and a professor I had taken a class with that I also served as an undergraduate learning assistant for

Interests: mental health, immigrant health, racial disparities, adolescent health

Applied: Yale (Social and Behavioral Sciences), GWU (Health Promotion), BU (CAPDIE), NYU (Social and Behavioral Sciences), Icahn (Health Promotion), UMD, Tufts (Behavioral and Community Health), CUNY (Community Health)
Accepted: Yale (1/6/21) + 60k scholarship, NYU (12/15/20) + 40k scholarship, BU (1/26/21) + 25% scholarship, GWU (11/25/20), Tufts (1/5/21), CUNY (2/2/21), UMD (1/14/21), Icahn (1/19/21)
Rejected: n/a
Waitlisted: n/a
Attending: Yale!

I am attending the Social and Behavioral Sciences program at Yale! The reason that I chose Yale over the other schools was because of: (1) I like the structure of the SBS program and felt that it would prepare me for my future aspirations of pursuing of a PhD (2) The faculty/research opportunities here (3) Cost of living in New Haven compared to other major cities, as well as receiving a scholarship (4) Proximity to my hometown, as I am from New York.

Even though Yale is not as highly ranked in public health compared to other schools, I felt that this program was the right one for me, and I am so excited to be attending starting in Fall 2021!

And to everyone applying in the next cycle, I wish you all the best of luck! As you can see, my GPA was not the best, and I was very worried about whether I was going to get in anywhere. I promise you that everything will work out and that you are so much more qualified than you think you are!

Is anyone familiar with the grad plus loan process? I’ve made sure to keep a good credit score and have a clean financial history. Is there any reason why I would be denied? I absolutely do not want to use a private lender. If anyone has any insight please let me know!

As far as I know, everyone gets offered 33K a year in federal unsubsidized loans. Anymore than that, I think you can try to get grad plus loans, but I don't know too much about those.

This is totally not an MPA chain but since I've been stuck waiting on a decision on a dual MPH/MPA program for a while, glad to say I got into Columbia MPA today!

(They play "New York, New York" by Frank Sinatra in their admissions e-mail when you open it, it's really cute!)

That’s so cute! Congrats!!

stressing between GW and Columbia. Also why is DC rent more than nyc? someone from dc please help
I'm quite familiar with both places and I don't think DC rent is more expensive but depends on exactly where you're living and with how many people. In DC a lot of people (especially students) live in row houses which are more affordable than downtown apartments since you may be living with ~5 other people (I know that sounds daunting but there are some very large houses haha). If you are looking for cheaper housing in DC, I would also recommend looking at Arlington, VA and Bethesda, MD. Sounds far but if they're metro accessible it can be just as close as somewhere in DC-proper. As for NYC, I know rent has dropped insanely since the pandemic, so perhaps that's why you're seeing cheaper things there now? (Also obviously depends on what neighborhood; Mailman is in a much less expensive area than NYU, for example.) Also, consider size - you may be paying the same in both cities but I can almost guarantee your DC space will be at least twice as big. PM me though if you have more questions, especially about DC housing as that's what I have the most experience with!

okay that’s really helpful i will! i think the biggest difference was in terms of proximity, you can be close to columbua with 1000$ rent but not in DC but this is helpful!

do not try to live directly in DC!! it's very expensive. look around parts of maryland and virginia that are metro accessible. it's not a whole lot cheaper, but it's still less!! check out this facebook page, i see some good deals sometimes: Facebook 小组

Yeah I'd agree. Walking distance from GW is very expensive but you easily could be a 30-minute commute away and be paying less than $1000. Does anyone know more about the area around Columbia (wondering especially about safety as a woman)? I've heard conflicting things about whether people would recommend living nearby or not.

Has anyone received any information about an admitted student's day or anything similar for UW? I was accepted into the Epi program and the letter said invitations would be sent in the following weeks but I haven't received anything.

i was admitted to health services and they had a virtual visit day a couple weeks ago. i would email them to check in!

For anyone from the 1/20 Columbia batch waiting for aid, I just got an email and all they gave me were the federal loans. Really disheartening that they made me wait two months just to tell me they don't have any money for me. Feels like they don't want me which makes me wonder why they accepted me in the first place... Just hard to hear since I really wanted to go there but finances are tight and I don't want to take out $100K in loans...

Has anyone heard from UCLA MPH Epi recently?
no 🙁( I've been waiting for them and UC Irvine. I tried emailing UCLA a few days ago, but they haven't responded. Not sure there's a lot of hope to be had anymore

Is anyone still waiting for Johns Hopkins MPH? ):

same just happened to me - I am pretty disappointed but am going to try and find a way to make it work since it's probably my top choice (unless UNC gives me aid). it's just so expensive!!

Same for me 🙁 Dream crushed.

Got my financial aid email from Columbia... just loans, sigh. Thought maybe I would have a chance at a scholarship with a 3.92 GPA but life goes on..now I am leaning towards BU because 35% tuition scholarship is pretty nice (still waiting on tufts financial aid though)!

Thanks!
I received a mail entitled Rollins School of Public Health Scholarship Notification.
I'm an international student and have done MSc in the most prestigious uni in my country. GPA is 3.5 or something (3.3 from undergrad and 3.8 from graduate school).
2.5 y working experience in the gov an d few months experience in NGO as an advocacy officer.

I crossed my fingers for you!

I just got Columbia's financial aid and also all loans. Sent an email if this is final or do scholarships come later. If not, they off the list, and it is between Hopkins, Harvard, UCLA, and Berkeley.

Harvard aid: Harvard Scholarship of $28,550 and a nutrition department scholarship of $16,667 for the years I'll be attending.
Hopkins Aid: 50% off tuition first year, 75% off tuition second year
UCLA aid: $20,000 scholarship off tuition per year.
UC Berkeley Aid: Same as UCLA + a Maternal Nutrition Scholarship of $5,000

I rejected Yale since the cost of difference was the highest with their aid. Hope that Yale aid goes to one of yall!
