MPH / MSPH 2021: Applied, Accepted, Waitlisted, Rejected, Attending

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I know you weren't replying to me but I'm in the same boat and I submitted my FAFSA literally the day after the application opened :-(
That's so weird. They say its first come first served based on when you submit the FAFSA....

Also merit scholarship recipients get an additional gift from emory, it's so beautiful 😍. even bigger than the first gift! ugh I feel so ready to commit there already 💙

I got minuscule merit scholarship and have not committed to Emory. Do we still get the second gift? The first gift was the portfolio folder, right? What is the second one?

I have a thing for freebies!!!

Just providing some context to freebies; I was super thrilled receiving the bumper sticker from Yale with the acceptance letter!

I can't wait to put that on my Prius. It might not give the "new car" smell, but my car will definitely get a complete make-over with that sticker.

I am going for that "fresh" look!!!

For me it comes down to JHU MSPH in Policy VS Columbia's MPH in Policy... Someone please validate my train of thought as I lean towards Columbia.

Program: MPH over MSPH. I feel like an MPH may be more useful on my resume when applying to consulting jobs. I also like the health policy analysis certificate Columbia offers, and the consulting case project.
Price: I have yet to receive merit from Columbia, but even if I were to be offered nothing it seems to still be within ~$5000 of JHU with the MTS. I also have above a 3.75 gpa so I can and will appeal come April 15. (Thankfully $ is not the biggest issue for me so im grateful that doesn't completely impact my final decision.)
Place: I was fine with either Baltimore or NYC. I have ties to both, and am nervous but excited to live in NY NY!

I guess at this point the only thing holding me back are:
1. Its freaking JHU, ranked #1 for MPH...(but does that count for msph?)
2. It seems like I would have a smaller cohort at JHU, and maybe a more personalized experience.
3. Love the idea of only one year of school, and one year of working, hopefully leading into a full time job. Seems like a great jumpstart to my career.

Any feedback or idea? Also anyone know if Columbia and Hopkins plan to be in person come fall?

I dm'd u!

Emory told everyone time and time again that there wasn't an additional form to fill out for financial aid. And last week or so they told us (in passing) there was a form you can use to as an appeal for more aid essentially but no gurantee. You can attach offers you've received from other schools and also explain your financial situation. They seem to have this form every year (I changed the year in the url checking 2020 and 2019), but they don't really advertise it anywhere so many people could easily miss this. It's worth a shot!

I asked a program manager about rankings cause I've always been kind of wary of them, and they said rankings are for the school overall, not for any one particular program

Finally heard back from Emory financial aid and only loans no REAL 🙁 i’m so upset this was a huge draw for the program, i was praying i could get work study at least!

I definitely submitted early enough so i don’t know why i didn’t get it. i bet it’s because i’m not coming directly out of undergrad and actually have a job but that’s BS like just bc i have a job doesn’t mean i ain’t broke 😭
same i didn't get REAL. I did FAFSA in October and I'm directly out of undergrad so idk what Emory is doing

Anyone deciding between Harvard's partial online mph-epi and Emory's executive mph? Cost will be the same for me. I'm worried that Harvard's 2 year program might be tough with kids at home. Would love to hear others thoughts. Thank you!

okay wow are we the same person?!?! This is hilarious LOL yes omg message me!! EXACTLY how I'm feeling right now. Would love to meet up or just chat virtually. Totally want to hear how you're deciding since I'm still so stuck!!

That's what I like about Emory too! While I was a bit frustrated I was hearing back later than others, ever since I got my acceptance, they've been very engaging.

I'll be tuning in to the JHU event this Friday too 🙂 Hopefully after that and all the Emory events this week, i'll have a better idea of where I want to go. And also omg I was thinking of doing the same thing, switching to a part-time schedule at my job if I go to JHU. And yes I've taken public and global health classes in undergrad so i am somewhat familiar with it, though my undergrad public health program was kind of a joke LOL so I know the JHU and Emory work load will be far more intense.

lmao I wish I could enroll in both 🤣 I love them for different reasons and I can't seem to decide which reasons to prioritize....please PM me so we can discuss more haha

What is the weekly time commitment during the online component of this degree program?

Online courses cover the same material in a rigorous manner as similar courses offered to students in other MPH and MS degree programs at the Harvard Chan School. One can expect to spend on average 10–12 hours per week engaged with the coursework. Students will be expected to keep up with the weekly pace of the course, but will have the flexibility of selecting the time for coursework, allowing for full-time professional work.

I personally think it doable with kids. The time commitment is pretty much the same for the EMPH at Emory (I got accepted to it as well).

Time will fly and soon you will have a degree from one of the best PH schools (Harvard) in the world.

Anyone else kind of over the initial excitement of getting accepted when suddenly having to worry about how they're going to afford their education? It really sucks. Getting into a top school is great, but then it's like damn, how am I supposed to afford this... and is taking on a ridiculous amount of loans really worth it
Yeah... it sucks especially when they get to the financial portion of the presentation and they say " I know we're expensive... but"... like there is no but lol

Thank you for letting me know I'm not alone! I feel like this cycle has been wild and a lot of schools have done horribly with communicating accurate timelines. Hopefully we hear something soon. April 15th is right around the corner!
Yes, I agree. JHU has had great communication except for the financial aid dept. Best of luck!!

Committed to Johns Hopkins for MHS in Epidemiology!!! 😍

Thank you so so SO much to everyone on this forum!! Y'all have been so freaking helpful and supportive during these times, and I'm so excited to be going into a field full of amazing & supportive individuals who have so much passion for the field of public health!! Seriously, y'all are amazing! I wish the best of luck to everyone who have made or are currently making decisions! <3 I can't wait to meet y'all in the field in a couple years from now!

committed to umich HMP- I’ll be turning down Emory and Columbia, so I hope that frees up some spots for waitlisted people! Also really hoping someone turns down a umich HMP offer w scholarship because they told me that’s the only way I can get a scholarship at this point lol rip (but still have in state tuition at least!)

Did anyone receive any Financial Aid information from USC or UCI? It’s almost April!! 😡

How long did it take to receive a financial aid package for those who got into Umich HBHE?🙂

Got my financial aid notice about 3 weeks ago, applied by priority deadline. There were only loans on the notice. I read somewhere any awards would come separately, but nothing as of yet.

Does anyone have more info on whether Columbia will be online next Fall? People in the GroupMe were saying they heard the CORE will be online since the class sizes are so big... I know one semester of online classes shouldn't stop me from choosing Columbia, but most other schools have stated they will likely be in-person :/

I'm pretty sure someone asked this before but I didn't see an answer but does anyone know how to decline admissions to Drexel?

Yay, congratulations!!!!!

After waiting almost 10 full weeks, instead of the “estimated 3-4 weeks” for financial aid, I decided to reach out to Columbia.

Funny enough, and just like I have seen consistently, my award was announced roughly 15 minutes after I emailed Columbia’s financial aid team.

I went through a very similar encounter with them. Did you only receive loans as part of your award? Mainly asking because I am wondering if they are still awarding scholarships. It has been pretty quiet lately so just trying to get a feel for any updates.

So, I clicked contact us or something like that. I can’t see it now because my application is withdrawn. There’s a form you fill out, and one of the reasons for contacting is to decline your admission offer.

Officially submitted my deposit to BU this weekend! I’m so excited, and after thinking about all of the contributing factors it just feels like where I’m supposed to be. It seems like most of the places I applied to don’t have an option to decline on their website so time to write some painful emails lol
