NCSU c/o 2017 applicants!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
OMFG I got in!

I got a small white envelope and was crushed walking all the way up the stairs to my apartment, because I thought for NCSU that big envelopes = in and small = out.

As I was unfolding the paper, SLOWLY, with DREAD, I was irrationally hoping it would say "we didn't get your transcript after all" and I maybe still had a chance to sort things out.

But it said CONGRATULATIONS!

I almost cried but just hyperventilated a little. :O

Congrats JoAnna and hygebeorht!!!

Where are you located? I'm from Indiana and didn't have anything in the mail yet. I'm hoping it got sent to my home address for some reason and my mom will find my notification in the mail when she gets home 🙄:xf:

I'm in Pennsylvania and haven't gotten anything yet either. I've been out of town the past few days and just called home to badger my dad to see if I got anything. Not that I'm expecting good news, but it would be nice to know for sure...

Thank you everyone! I will be accepting. Im thrilled. I burst into tears & scared the crap out of my son....lol

Isn't it the best letter? No beating around the bush, just "CONGRATULATIONS!"

I'm so excited for you guys, look forward to meeting everyone!

I wish we could do stickies for individual threads... "ALL LETTERS COME IN LITTLE ENVELOPES. DON'T FLIP OUT!" I know I have multiple classmates who definitely thought they were rejected and even one who put off opening theirs for a bit because of their tiny size.

HUGE congrats to you both, JoAnna and Hygeb!!!

I Soooo hope I will be joining you this Fall :xf:

Congrats to both of you for getting in!!

I got my wonderful rejection letter from them today. No matter, I still have Mizzou for now!

Hey Rainheart, sorry to hear. All the same, I was impressed by Mizzou and I think it's a great school. Plus you'll get an adorable pet portrait. Kind of embarrassing but that was sort of a huge draw for me...lol

Do not worry about it, it's cool. I LOVED Mizzou when I visited so I definitely don't mind attending, just the distance (about 14 hours) is a big thing for me. Anyway, I also loved those portraits!! I'd love to have one with my Beamer boy!

Can any current students tell me about where people like to live? I'm doing my usual condo/house hunting thing that I do in the cities of the schools I applied to. I'm hoping to buy and have some roommates, ideally quite close to the school.

A few of my classmates and I live within 2 miles of the school in a townhouse complex. We all rent. However, I also have classmates that commute about 30 minutes to school each way. A handful own their homes, and there are those of us that rent. I'm not sure about the availability of purchasing housing close to the school, simply because I have never looked. I hope this helped at least a little. Also you should get an email sometime from Jeff Huckle about places other students recommend living. These are mostly rental places though.

Hm okay orcagirl! Are there any better/grosser areas in the general school area I should know about?

Also, I'd really like to go out and check out the school and the area. On the site it says there are prospective tours for prospective applicants, and there wasn't any information about tours for accepted applicants. Are these all kind of the same thing? Or will there be info sessions or something down the line that I don't yet know about?

Thanks for the info!

There's a welcome weekend event in early April - you should get an email from Jeff somewhat soon about it. I didn't actually go to it last year (work...) but I'm pretty sure Orca did and could probably tell you about it.

I think things down Gorman Street (closer to main campus) can get pretty nasty. I've had classmates complain about shootings and seeing what looked like dead bodies. However, there are a lot of good areas as well.

You should get information on Welcome Weekend. I believe it's April 6th this year. There's tours for students as well as an opportunity to try on scrubs/coveralls. And other fun things. Now that I think about it there might have been a realtor there. They can give you information on what's for sale in the area and match you with houses that meet your criteria.

Try on scrubs/coveralls? Why? Do you have to buy NCSU gear?

Were all the people there already committed to attending NCSU or were there still any who hadn't chosen yet?

You don't have to buy through the school, but you have to wear ceil blue scrubs at the Terry Center (teaching hospital) if you want to shadow. You can order them through the school with all your supplies and they keep track of what size you got in case you need to get more. I think at that time most people had decided on NCSU. I, however, had not. It wasn't until after that trip that I made my decision. It was a pretty hard one from being being an out of state student and having many wonderful schools to choose from. However, I don't regret my decision. It's an amazing school filled with amazing people.

I just wanna get my letter! I hope it comes tomorrow...it's like waiting for Hogwarts  Hope it's good news :scared:👎thumbup::idea:😍😕

Waitlisted-FL. It sounds pretty much like a no since no one got off of the waitlist last year. I wish it were just a yes or no!

I'm an NJ resident... definitely was expecting this small envelope to be a rejection, so I'm sort-of hopeful... But in the letter it says the waitlist consists of 50 unranked applicants, and that last year they didn't accept any off the waitlist.

Currently paying lots o' money for the Animal Nutrition course, with the thought that if I didn't get in I would drop it and get a partial refund. I guess now I'll keep at it and hope for the best...

I am doing the same thing with animal nutrition. Now, in the off chance that I get off of the list I need the class to be accepted... 🙁

Yeah, I feel like it's a long shot but I don't want to throw away my chance by dropping the class! It's almost like superstition...knowing me the moment I drop the class is the moment I get offered a spot. But I know certain schools allow you to opt out of nutrition if you've already taken it, so it might free up space for an elective down the road, even if not at NC State.

Waitlisted. 🙄 Looks like I'm going to Ohio State! Congratulations to everyone who was accepted 🙂

It was quite the struggle to wait patiently for the mailman to drive up a few houses before running out to the mail box (well, I would have been running if the ground wasn't snow covered...) Sadly, rejection 🙁 Oh well, I'm not surprised. I'm well aware of the weaknesses on my application (variety in my vet experience mostly) so I pretty much knew I wasn't going to be competitive enough for NCSU. But I still have 4 interviews to hear back from (once I finish them all, that is)!

Congratulations to everyone getting to go to such a great school without $250,000+ worth of debt!

For waitlisters, don't give up completely! Someone on SDN two years ago got in off the OOS waitlist, so apparently it does move sometimes. :xf:

Apparently no one got in from the waitlist last year, but you never know...

I can't decide if I should just send in my acceptance fee to OSU for the sake of making things official or wait to closer to April 15...part of me says why do it so early if I don't have to, but the other part says no one is likely to get in from the waitlist at NCSU till after the 15th (if at all)...

Waitlisted...

So does that mean I'm a mudblood?

I got in as an OOS but am 99% sure I will be declining (need to crunch some numbers first). Hopefully that will lead to good news for someone here! 🙂

If I'm reading the stats from NCSU's page right, around 30 OOS people are admitted and about 50 are waitlisted. For residents it looks like 60ish are admitted and around 15 are waitlisted.

The data is a few years old. Anyone have better numbers?

While it sucks to be in limbo, waitlisters should feel proud 🙂 I know that because NCSU is so affordable and so well-ranked, it is a very popular choice for applicants. And to apply, your academic ducks REALLY have to be in line. Good on you all.

On an interesting note, as I was working on sorting out transcript issues between NCSU and my home university about a week or two ago, Jessica Aycock seemed friendlier on the phone. Do you suppose she was less stressed than she was during application season, or do you think maybe she knew I was accepted? I know someone mentioned that while the admissions folks can seem pretty cold during the application process, they are downright charming to you once you're a student...

Anyway, bless the admission office peoples' hearts. 😍 I had so many quirky little problems with transcripts and prereqs and so on and they must have been quite tired of hearing from me.

Applying to vet school is HARRRRDDDD

Well darn, rejected. It's ok though. I've been accepted to Mizzou and OSU, and I'm still waiting on some others. I can't be too bummed because my letter said there were 647 applications for 20 OOS spots. Competition was SUPER tough. Congrats to all the acceptances and good luck to the waitlisters! :luck:

I didn't work with Jessica as an applicant (she's new!) but from my interactions with her as a student she's very nice. And I also had transcript issues when I applied and the admissions office definitely worked with me.

Your numbers are a bit off, as the class size increased with my year to 100. It's 80 IS, 20 OOS IIRC, but not sure on the number admitted/waitlisted/etc. There's some numbers here that look like they accepted 28 OOS people for the 20 seats last year.

got mine in florida today..rejection which is 0 for 4 this cycle looks like I'm applying again this year 🙁

Don't give up, I was 0 for 3 last year, so there is always hope!! Now I have one acceptance and got 4 interviews this year! Still waiting to hear from 1 school.

And congrats to those who got in to NCSU!! And being waitlisted, that is quite an accomplishment!

So sorry, krh. Is this your first application cycle?

And if one of those 4 is a dream school for you, see if you can't move there and get residency. Your chances will vastly improve!

I got rejected my first cycle. This year I'm already admitted to 5 schools. You can make a big difference in a year 🙂

yes its my first cycle...my instate school was my dream school Florida...im going to retake the gre and see if I can get more experience with horses and farm animals, i have 4000 hours with small animals at a vet's office but I lack in large and farm animal experience

Sorry, but what does IIRC mean? I can't quite suss it out. Also, that PDF is much more up-to-date. Thanks!

Jesus. If I hadn't already sat down and drank a bottle of cheap champagne in honor of my acceptance I would damn well do it now. I feel like I survived a game of russian roulette where all the chambers were loaded but one :scared:

I don't know what FL's program is like, but really unusual animal experience may help you stand out. In general LA is great, but maybe try to get some lab animal too? Or find something really weird, like an alpaca-only vet and tail her/him. Go for the unusual, and if you can't find that, go for the grim and nasty.

Have you taken the new style GRE? I found it much easier and did very well. GRE classes or books may help too. Definitely do practice rounds, timing yourself as you would for the test. Time management is what killed me on my first GRE.

i took the new gre and it was a 152 verbal or a 490 and a 150 math or a 630 which equals roughly around an 1120 so i know i need to improve, i get really nervous, i used to throw up before tests in high school

Test anxiety is the worst. Fortunately I've never had to deal with it, but my sister and friend have, and it can be quite severe and debilitating. Maybe check if your school has the resources to help you address some of it? There are also sources online to help you go from "it's an exam I'm going to die" to "it's a game I have to play right now."

Doing all the test equivalency stuff makes my head hurt a little, but I know on my first GRE more than 6 years ago I got 50th percentile on one section, which surprised me since I usually test well. I retook the old format and was in the 80ish and 90ish percentiles on Q and V, and then I took the new and got 170 V and 160 Q, 5.5 A. I didn't study much harder for each. I think just taking the dang thing 3x calmed me down and helped me focus. Practice makes perfect!

And thanks jlindp, that's one I hadn't seen before 🙂

I think that is GREAT and I could not agree more! Sometimes people forget how different someones care for their animals can be because of a certain culture and its important that vets understand this. Also knowing that many languages is amazing and I am sure makes your app stand out. Good luck!

Thanks! I hope I get in...I'll definitely inform the forum if I do 🙂

well, i'm very skeptical i'll get in, which helps with the stress. i didn't get in in-state last year, and i had to apply alternative admission again this year (and only 1 person got in under aa last year) because of my last 45 gpa. so i'm realistic about my chances there this cycle. plus, i've gotten in somewhere oos, which is the hugest stress reliever of all!

but last year, it was all about keeping busy. when i had too much time to get anxious or i wasn't tired enough at night to fall asleep the second my head hit the pillow (and hence would stay away worrying), i'd ask for extra hours at work. or do jigsaw puzzles. those help me!

Thank you! I will definitely have to look into something. I joined a gym recently so that has been keeping the nights busy. I just want to know already so that I can mentally prepare myself to be at my boring desk job for another year...oh the sacrifices we make for vet school..🙄

yay! congrats! good thing to know that they give you some suspense with the small envelope...I may have had a heart attack otherwise 👍

NCSU expanded their class this year to 100 students (20 OOS and 80 IS) but those numbers are not definite...if they have way more OOS students that they want they will take more.

I'm still waiting for my letter...I'm so nervous I can't even think about anything else...
I know the date is March 15 but they might send them out beforehand, right? The suspense is killing me!
