I don't think either computer is "better" for vet school use, so it comes down to preference. Me, I think it's ridiculous to pay that much for a laptop when you can get a great, solid PC for 1/4 of the price. Some people swear by Macs, but for what you'll be doing in vet school (internet, word-processing, Power Point)? Not worth it IMHO unless you're a die-hard Apple fan (with a good deal of extra cash).

I'm excited to visit tomorrow and am thinking rainy and 60 degrees is better than the 7-10 inches of snow I'm getting overnight tonight 😱 (maybe it's an April fools joke)! Hopefully my flight doesn't get cancelled and hopefully after this visit I can finally make a decision!

So excited to meet all of you tomorrow! The weather should be clearing up so you can enjoy the spring down here. Hopefully you'll get a good feel for the school, students, and program...and also come out to mingle and have a good time that night! Also, bring some quarters for the class of 2014 bakesale table tomorrow - it's bound to be worth it! 😉

To me, a Mac is an expensive, restrictive computer. The biggest hang up - no Flash. Steve Jobs has a personal issue with the developer of Flash and won't let it run on "his" computers. Networking is funny and most network guys won't be able to help you sort out problems, unless they really like you. MS has the biggest market share and a proven track record across the board. Win7 is the best MS OS I've seen, as it should be, though Vista was a step backward. If you are looking at getting something with more than 4 GB RAM, get a 64-bit OS. My Lenovo tablet is getting 8GB shortly after it arrives. Cheaper to DIY it than have the factory add it.

Steve Jobs won't let it run on his iPods, iPads, and iPhones. Flash runs on Macs. Also, networking isn't that bad. But I'm speaking from personal experience with my Mac. And I run flash on my computer daily. He doesn't like it for his other devices because flash is resource-intensive. The reason I've heard he doesn't support it is because he supports HTML5 instead (which most tech guys I know think is better across the board, but is still in development).

I'm so excited to meet you guys, too! Hopefully I'll be able to figure out who goes with which SDN instead of having to resort to "Hi, I'm Pelagia on SDN...." and then having it be all awkward if the person I'm meeting is like "what are you talking about?"

Since today is dress up day at work (nice uniform with all the ribbons and shiny badges, etc) 'm going with my standby of jeans and a t-shirt. If you see a guy with a skull and crossed swords that says BlackJack Tech Diving Crew on the back of a black shirt, that's me.

I'll bite - I'll be on the panel this afternoon. I'm the OOS student from PA with the pathology/small animal interest. 🙂 And I'm short and look like I'm about 14 years old according to my anatomy lab group.

Except for the from PA part, that pretty much describes me as well....lol

Did I meet you tonight? Met so many people, can't remember most of their names, and at the Ale house, I couldn't hear half of them. It was nice to meet everyone who was there and looking forward to meeting everyone else in Aug. Looks like we have a pretty good group.

I hadn't read this before hand so I didn't know what I was looking for but reading this after the fact, I think maybe you were in my tour group? If not, then no - I don't think we met.

Touring and meeting people was lots of fun, I'm even more excited now. I ran into Pelagia in the hotel this morning and had breakfast with her and her husband 🙂

Other than that, I didn't mention SDN to anyone, so I'm not sure if I met any of you. Does anyone remember chatting with a tall, really pale guy? 😛

It was nice to meet you, alhazred! I was telling my husband, hey I know who that is and he was like, let's have them sit with us, but at first I was afraid that you'd think I was a weirdo and who be like who is this girl? Haha. It was nice meeting you too, armymutt! I also got to meet NittanyKitty at the reception thing! I really wanted to go out to the ale house, but we were so tired by then (we had been up since 4 am since we flew in from tx that day!) so we just went back to our hotel and crashed, lol. I felt so geriatric. Can't wait to meet everyone in august!

Did you have an older guy walking around with the girl in your class from TN?

Hmm, I don't think so. My memory for people is...not great.

I'm glad you did say something, it was great getting to know the two of you.

Dragging this thread back up because I realized something. I noticed that t-shirts and jeans/shorts seem to be the preferred clothing in school. Issue for me is that my t-shirts fall into roughly 50% Purdue shirts, 30% Army units, and 20% other. How do people feel about wearing other schools' shirts there? At Purdue, it wasn't unusual, but then I don't want someone thinking I'm not happy to be at NCSU. I didn't see a lot of CVM shirts to dilute the mix, and I don't think I'll get a regular one designed for undergrads. When you haven't had to put any thought into what you are wearing to work for the last 10 years, these kind of things are stressful. Perhaps I shall just declare that my wardrobe does not necessarily represent any sort of current favoritism, but is merely a result of what ever happens to be on top in the drawer that morning.

I don't think it will be a problem. I wear UF stuff often (just because when I graduated people bought me a lot of UF stuff).

Also, maybe I just misunderstood you but if I did understand you correctly, then don't worry about getting NCSU CVM shirts - there are PLENTY to choose from.

It seemed like there were a ton of different shirts being sold at our welcome reception. I'm sure there will be many more opportunities to purchase some. I can't wait to wear one! 🙂

Hi,
Congrats to all that got in! Since I didn't get in, I am going to apply for the Masters in Physiology program. Do any current students have feedback for this program? Also, any course recommendations would be appreciated! I don't see a place where professors are rated.
Thanks!

Hey! I am currently in the Masters of Physiology Program..Im finishing up in May. Are you referring to the non thesis program? If you are, it is a great program! I have really enjoyed it, and definitely feel like my first year of vet school will be much easier because of all the different courses I have taken. It has definitely prepared me for any challenges I may encounter in vet school. The year of physiology you take is tough, but the professor who teaches it is absolutely AMAZING! He is probably one of the best professors I have ever had in college. Ive taken immunology, histology, pharmacology, mammalian endocrinology, medical microbiology etc. All of those are great courses. The required biochem class is ok...It is based around DNA transcription/replication/translation etc...so it wasnt too interesting for me. You can PM me if you have any specific questions! Hope that is somewhat helpful!

Thanks, parrotlove! Yes, non-thesis so I will hopefully be able to work at the same time. I will PM you if I get in for some more questions. Thanks!

No problem! Schedules are usually pretty flexible (i try to arrange mine so that I have certain days off), so I have been able to work 25-30 hours a week. It has been great! Good luck!

I just wanted to say that I hope everyone (and their stuff) is okay after the tornadoes and storm!

I agree! I live in eastern NC (about an hour east of Raleigh) and we made it through fine. We watched several funnel clouds and a few tornadoes try to touch down, but thankfully none did. Hope everyone in Raleigh and the surrounding areas are OK!

I'm ok. I live just south of Sanford. Our Lowe's is gone and Tractor Supply will be out of business for a while. I hear things are pretty bad down in Fayetteville as well. Ft. Bragg basically gave up and closed two of the most heavily trafficked gates.

Do we get discounts on pet insurance? I've never had it before, but I've been considering getting it for my cats. Even if students get discounts on their pets' healthcare through the teaching hospital or their place of employment, I know that treatment for illnesses and injuries can still get pretty pricey pretty quickly. I'm going to start researching companies and seeing what they cover, what the deductibles are, etc, but does anyone have a pet insurance company they like?

Anyone know where we find our student ID number? I looked through the mypack portal, but couldn't find it in any obvious places.

It should be in an email they sent you shortly after you got your acceptance. It's the email that tells you what your NCSU email is.
