Nova Southeastern Univ (NSU-COM) Discussion Thread 2014 - 2015

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Did they happen to tell you how long after the interview date we can expect a decision?

It can be anywhere from 1 week - months lol. The time varies depending on when the adcom meets with respect to your interview day, how competitive your application is, and how late in the cycle it is. The good news is that Nova doesn't do silent rejections, so you'll hear back from them...eventually.

Anyone interviewing here tomorrow? If so, I'll see you bright and early!

Those emails are a lot more off-putting when you're currently at the school interviewing haha. But I think overall it went well! Here's to hoping for good news =]

I hate you...

any tips from the interview? I interview next month. Beyond excited.

Interview was good! They have their interviews in the morning (open file with two faculty members) so it's nice to have it out of the way the rest of the day. The day can be really long though if you're used to having the interview last like I was haha. Interview had pretty standard questions though (similar to the video NSU posts) and was pretty quick, about 30min. We also didn't get a chance to meet the dean which was a little disappointing but overall, the school was great and everyone was friendly and helpful.

Overall good experience! Some other things they told us while we were there:

1) we probably won't hear back for about 6-8 weeks (yikes!) but it's because the dean is going somewhere for a month ish and makes all final decisions on applicants. So we'll see when those come out!

2) they claim to only be interviewing 450 applicants out of an estimated 5500 total by the end of spring. I'm not sure what this means as far as how many they will accept or what they might be screening for in the secondary, but I thought that was interesting to hear. A little lower than most schools as far as I know. But we'll see what happens! 🙂

According to MSAR and US News, most schools accept ~2x their class size, and last year NSU interviewed 795 and accepted 477 for a class ~240 total. To only be interviewing 450 would be VERY low, but I hope that's the case!

Was your experience similar to Fargofargo's? this is was he/she said

The interview itself was very very very relaxing. It was only about 10-15minutes, which is good of course, but I feel like I didn't get to sell myself a lot because of the time limit and the type of questions they asked. They actually do read your application prior and ask you specifics from it and make you relate that into practice of medicine. No ethical questions, make sure you know some stuff about obamacare though. The people who interview you are also NOT members of the adcom, but rather advocates of your application, so their role is to extract info from you and pass on what they wrote down about you to the adcom. Great lunch also! haha

They focused on EC questions for me. I wasn't even asked of why DO, why NSU, why medicine actually haha. But when they asked me about my personal background or EC, they were kind of implying me to relate that into osteopathic medicine( by asking me " how can this relate to your inspiration to become a DO), so I guess I answered those questions indirectly. I definitely started with a tell me about yourself question though. and for the healthcare questions, they just wanted your opinion on whats good and whats bad about it, to see that you are an informed person. Overall, they asked me about 7-10 questions? All of them were straight forward with no follow ups. They were writing stuff down as you talk but don't forget to make eye contact with both interviewers!
btw, I learned that this school likes to be called NSU, not Nova, since it was a merger between Nova college and Southeastern University.
Good luck!

Thank you in advance

That's why I was so surprised! I'm
Wondering how many they would plan to accept of the 450 in order to fill their class of 230. Especially since a lot of the fellow interviewees I talked to (including myself) had already interviewed and even heard back from other places already and NSU wants to wait 6-8 weeks from now which puts us all dangerously close to the December deadlines. So we'll see what happens i guess! Crossing my fingers that this means they have a high acceptance rate for those that interview!

For the most part, I would say yes. The questions were definitely focused on my application which was cool because I felt like I was more explaining the things I love instead of defending my reasons for wanting to become a physician. My interview was closer to about 30 minutes but other students said theirs was shorter. Idk if anyone really kept time or anything, but it worked for most I think.

Hope that helps a bit!

Is everyone supposed to receive a phone call, I believe Ive been complete since 9/18

Does Nova do silent rejections? I have a feeling they're done giving out ii, as no one has posted about one on here in well over a month. I was complete 8/7.

When I called I was told I was still under review and that it could take up to three months to hear something.

I don't know about silent rejections but they're definitely behind schedule. Took me about a month and a half to hear back about an II and I filled out my secondary the first day it was available. And now we supposedly have to wait another 6-8weeks just to hear back after the interview haha. Hold tight for a bit longer! They just started interviews a few weeks ago so I'm sure there will be more invites going out soon! Good luck to you guys!

I'm concerned as well... I was complete about the same time as you and haven't heard a word.

We were told decisions would take 6-8 weeks as well, but then they said anytime Oct 1-15 we should know (I interviewed early Sept.)

How could they possibly be done giving out IIs lol...

As posted elsewhere on this thread, they're likely just off to a slow start. I believe that everyone who received an II was complete prior to August. I suspect that they haven't even made it through all the secondaries submitted in August yet and that there will be many more IIs. I was complete mid august, btw. Too early to panic.

They told us they gave out 390 acceptances last year.

I got that info from US News' numbers (who only gets their data from the school themselves) so I have no idea which is correct then...

In this case, the admissions officers. Notice US News says they had 4000 total applicants. That might have been 3 years ago. They had at least 5000 last year.

I legitimately gasped outloud when I read "Nova Southeastern University......." on the google app in my phone...........I cannot express how pissed I was, how hard I laughed afterwards, and then how depressed I got after remembering that my other friends have interviews from other schools and I havent heard anything yet.

This response isn't really a reply directly to you, but to anyone who seems to be feaking out/getting worried.

Nova doesn't do silent rejections, not everyone will get the "you're complete" phonecall, they're not done giving out interviews (that would be silly), and lastly: the population of people that actually post on SDN is small compared to the population of people that actually applied/got an interview/got accepted. Just because no one has posed on SDN that they got an interview doesn't really mean anything, especially since we're still in October. So as hard as it is, just try to relax. It's out of your guys' hands now.

I'll add to that. Applying to a school doesn't entitle us to an interview. Sooo yeah, there's that. Lets all chill.

I just wish they were a bit quicker these deposits are not cheap.

Just had my interview here today. We were told that it could take anywhere from 6 to 10 weeks to find out because the Dean has many scheduled conferences etc for the next month and he must sign off on all the final decisions. They also mentioned that they are only interviewing roughly 450 this year and their class size is 230 or 240, I believe. If this is the case, then I'm suspecting that there should be a high acceptance rate for those who interview. Overall, the interview was laid back for me, although others had varying opinions. I guess it just depends on who you get. Good luck to you all!

That's absurd if they actually do that. Don't most MD schools accept 2-2.5x class size? You would think that a high MCAT-loving DO school would have accept well past that considering many applicants are going to have numbers to possibly get into an MD.

I think if it's the one thing I learned from this application process is that no one is guaranteed to get II from anywhere, even if your GPA/MCAT is above the school's average. With my stats, I thought I would for sure hear back from places like LMU, KYCOM etc, where I'm above their numbers. But no. I have been complete at those places for over 10 weeks and still nothing. While I heard back from places that I wouldn't imagined to hear back from. I sincerely believe that the school is looking for some strange aspect of your application to grant you the interview. High stats do give you the opportunity to qualify your application to be reviewed at more places but are not guaranteed to get interviews. It's unfair but I guess this is how the schools work haha

They said that they over extended their acceptances last year and way more ppl turned in their deposits so their class overfilled. So they realized that they don't need to interview that many ppl to receive back adequate amount of deposits for their class of 230.

Yeah, I know what you mean. Unfortunately, waiting is just part of the application process and there's a notorious amount of waiting for Nova.

There are actually quite a few people in my class who were accepted to MD schools who chose to go to Nova. I think a majority of people who get accepted end up attending, even if they have acceptances to other schools. Interviewing 450 does seems low though.

Do you happen to know anyone who had any luck contacting the admissions office for a decision if the wait time for a decision drew dangerously close to the deposit deadline for another school? I have to submit a deposit for KCUMB by Dec 15, but there's a possibility I would want to go here over KCUMB. But I do not want to lose $1000...

I'm in a similar situation (though I might prefer KCUMB haha) but I'm just going to wait it out until December 1st and see if I hear something by then. If not, I'm sure they will be getting several phone calls haha. Here's to hoping their decisions come out quicker than expected!

I don't personally. You might find better luck if you search previous years threads. If you haven't heard a decision back by November, I would definitely call Nova and let someone from COM know about the situation. Who knows, maybe it'll help expedite things.

Has anybody that has interviewed got a decision yet? I'm dying over here.

When did you interview? Mine was only last week and with the 6-8 week prediction, I don't expect to hear back for a longggg time lol.
