Nova Southeastern Univ (NSU-COM) Discussion Thread 2015 - 2016

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
How long after your picked an interview slot, did you receive an email detailing the interview? I got an II from here yesterday, which said that they would send us an email after we picked a date. Picked the date yesterday, but still haven't received that email. Wondering if that is because of the weekend.

I also havent received my confirmation email yet. I chose 2/11 on Thursday night.

So could somebody come to an accurate numbers regarding IIs and acceptances? It seems to me when they say 250 seats, they will accept nearly 2x that.

Last year it went something like that. However, they ended having way too many accepted and too few seats. So this year they are supposedly cutting back from around 500 acceptances to somewhere between 350 to 400

What i dont understand is how some people posted they've been told 370 IIs. Seems like all are basically going to be accepted just to fill the enough numbers.

I was told they are interviewing 370-400 people then accepting the exact number of seats they have then just pulling from waitlist

Then it looks like they will end up giving matriculation chances to all waitlists in the end i guess.

Anyone aware of how many seats have been taken at this point?

I don't want to bring anyone's hopes down but I think the number of seats that's actually available is a little misleading.
1. We have a MBS track program which I believe there's 30-40 students in it. Expect almost all of them to be in the class of 2020.
2. There's a supposed 3+4 year program at NSU. I don't know exactly how many students they take from here but it should be at least 5-10 (could be more).
3. The deferred students. I personally know of 5 students who are going to be in your class and I'm sure there's more I don't know of.

So technically (if my calculations are correct) it should be ~200 seats for those actually applying.
Edit: This is just my own theory so someone please correct me if I'm wrong.

Hey thanks for the info!
Even with that numbers added in, it is for sure better off than the usual 115 students each class.

Has anyone or know of anyone who has been rejected post-interview (or even pre for that matter)? Seems like an II means a pretty good shot of acceptance if you interview well? Hopefully can make a good impression within only 15 minutes...

One of my good friends is part of the dual admissions program at NSU. According to her the number is close to 10-20. NSU apparently has a 3+4 as well as a 4+4 dual admissions program. She said that many of the dual admissions students do not go through with the program though (either by not meeting the gpa/mcat requirements or choose to go to a different medschool by applying traditionally).

Anyone else not getting any confirmation email after booking II date??

Finally heard something from Nova! Unfortunately it was a rejection and it oddly came through snail mail. One less school to worry about lol good luck to everyone else!

Sorry to hear that. I thought NOVA was all about silent rejections...when were you complete?

II invite today via e-mail (I didn't accept a 954 number earlier though). Complete since October.
It's going to really hurt to withdraw my app from here. But I hope my II goes to someone who will kill it at the interview and take advantage of all of the amazing opportunities in South Florida 🙂

Sorry to hear about that. If you don't mind me asking, when did you interview?

Anyone who interviewed two weeks ago get a response yet? the suspense is killing me!!
+1. Emailed the dean a thank you letter after interview though and she responded last week saying she was signing off on acceptances end of last week so I'm hoping to hear something soon! Good luck to you!

1. False. The MBS track only has around 28 students and so far only 20 are still eligible to matriculate with the class. They need to get at least all B's and a few didn't manage to do that. Not to mention this semester isn't over yet.
2. The 3/4 year NOVA program students still need to interview along with the rest of your class. Yes, they get preference, but they're a part of your interview statistics. There's not many of them.
3. The deffered/remediating students don't account for your class number. Yes, they will be part of your class in the long run but they don't count towards the initial 250.

So that class number is still a lot closer to 250 than it is to 200.

Does anyone know how many elective rotations we get for 3rd/4th year? With the exception of the rural rotation.

Could a current student shed some light on what a typical schedule is like? How many hours a day do you spend in lecture? Is attendance mandatory? Lectures recorded? How often are exams? Grading style?

What is the overall atmosphere of the school like?

Are there ample research opportunities?

If you want i can PM you the schedule but its pretty much booked all day every day. Only real required attendance things are tuesday mornings for OPP lecture (1 hr), occasional doctoring classes monday afternoon for a few hours, two hours in the morning on friday's and labs in the afternoon for about 2-3 days of the week. The amount of labs vary based on the semester. I am in more lab because we are in gross anatomy, neuroanatomy, OPP and physical diagnosis (whereas last semester we did not have any of the anatomy classes). Lectures are almost all recorded; very rarely are they not, even the ones in the OPP labs, etc. Exams are kinda killer in first year. On average 1 per week but this can go up to 3-4. Like right now I pretty much have exams every week until spring break and then after spring break is every week (sometimes more) until finals which is an exam every day for a week straight. Second year is completely systems based and so you will have exams less often, around monthly. To put things in perspective, we had 26 exams last semester (which includes clinical skills exams and all practicals for the labs).

Grading style is you get a number grade that will go on your transcript which kinda sucks but whatever. Passing the class is usually set at 70%.

Overall atmosphere, I really love this school. I am OOS FWIW and fit in perfectly here. Obviously some people are more competitive than others but I don't think there is really a harsh gunner mentality here. There are ample reviews put on by M2 students as well as M1s that did the MBS program last year.

As far as research, I would say they are definitely not as readily available as at a school with an adjacent associated hospital, but many students do take part in research. This may become better once the research building opens.

Did anyone else that interviewed recently get an email at 2 am titled "NSU documents received" indicating that an official transcript has been received? First off, I almost died seeing that email this morning thinking it would be a decision. And second, do you think this is a sign that they are moving forward with (or accepting perhaps!) our applications for those of us that just interviewed?

I got the exact same email and my heart raced!!! But I did not send in an updated transcript....did you?

well maybe its a good sign?
That's what I'm hoping! Good luck to you and anyone else that interviewed 1/12 through 1/21 (I believe these 4 interview dates were discussed at the CoA last week)!! Keeping my fingers crossed for some good news soon

I'm jealous of u guys lol.

They only deal with transcripts post acceptance since it's not part of your interviewee file.
Or at least that's how it is at other schools.

This is most likely a sign of excellent news for you guys

Got the same and I also didn't send in updated transcripts! Praying it's a good sign I want to go here so bad

I hope your prediction is true😀

Okay I just died seeing a phone call from Fort Lauderdale. They called to let me know that my official transcripts have been received and that my application is complete. I was really hoping they would accept me right then! Now the suspense is really killing me.

Did you tell them that you didn't send transcripts, and did they explain what it was all about?

Honestly I was so nervous I had a hard time spitting out my mailing address so I didn't ask questions. I only asked, "so, I don't need to send in any official transcripts, is that correct?" and the lady said "Yes, that's correct. Your file is now complete."

Did she say it casually

Like "your file is now complete"

Or with a malevolent undertone

Like "your file..... is now complete.. you may pass now"
