NSU-COM Discussion Thread 2009-2010

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I have been complete since late September and my webstar still states decision pending. They told me I should have an answer by march, as march will be the last invitations to interview.

Any idea how many acceptances have been given out or how many slots have been filled?

i tried to cleverly ask when i called last time, unfortunately they arent at liberty to say🙄

Well, the facebook group for people who are accepted and planning to attend has 85 people, so i would imagine somewhere around that number. most likely a few more acceptances have been given out than people planning on going right now. i would imagine a number in the low-mid 100's.

I am not sure how many slots have been filled and a lot of things I imagine can change after the second deposit is due March 15th. Some more spaces will hopefully be available from students who got accepted at the school of their number one choice after paying the NSU first deposit. :xf:

The two weeks that the dean told us we would hear back in... feels more like two months... Oh wait it is

Dont know if this will help for those waiting. I got an email just a day ago that says that they were told last week that they will not be releasing any new decisions until the second week of March, definitively. So it seems they are waiting to get as many interviews in as possible without releasing the acceptances. This wait is killing me too, but just thought I would toss it out there for those checking every day right now (like me, lol). Good luck to everyone.

Hey guys, FYI the Dean has been out of town recently, and he has to "sign off" on all the acceptances so that could be part of the reason for the delay in app processing time

I wonder what is the point of witholding the acceptances until that time?

i thought they were just behind, but if they really are witholding acceptances i guess it would be so they can interview everyone and make sure they accept the top people who would be best. that way the late birds can get the worm, too, so to speak.

possibly..but i thought they had rolling admissions...

Anyone know if Nova is still inviting people for interviews, and when they will be doing that till? I was complete since mid November, although my DO lor was only sent about 2 weeks ago... I'm actually still hoping to hear something, but chances are looking slim

Yeah, my app has been complete since November and I still haven't heard anything about an interview... When I called they said we should know about interviews by March. Eek I'm thinking this is a bad sign. I'm going to call tomorrow.

they told me that I could call back in a few weeks to check my status, but all they kept telling me was that theres nothing else they can tell me, besides just wait etc etc. it seems like everyone is just waiting for something these days from nova, be it acceptances or interview. Anyways ill probably call on thursday to see if i can get any update. Call if you havent yet, it never hurts. Ill let you know what they tell me.

this is the same things I was told when I called to check my alternate status. Wait till March 15th I guess, but can't do anything to help my case apparently. Weird since most schools say submit anything you can to improve your file.😕

Congrats to all those who have been accepted so far. I interviewed on March 2 and must say that I was very impressed with the school. Before I went for the interview, Ga-PCOM was my top choice. After meeting with the Dean and seeing the campus, I believe that it is now tied for my number 1 choice. I hope to hear back sometime soon. Any idea as to when those of us will hear back?

sit back and relax. i've been waiting 6 weeks now. they said they'd get back to me mid-late march.

Thanks, didn't realize it would be that long. I'll sit and enjoy the ride.

March 15 is the magic day for all of us....confirmed by Ms. DeHart

Looks like everyone interviewing from Jan-Mar are all waiting and NOVA is determining how many seats will be available based who decides to drop by their 2nd deposit date of March 15.

Hopefully a lot of good news from everyone that day.

So does that mean webstar will be updated that same day or a couple days later? Man, I really don't want to lose $1500 on a deposit for another school. Deadlines are approaching! Ugh the anticipation

At least its mid march and not late march..i guess 7 more days isn't that bad..hopefully i won't be too burnt out from calle ocho to forget to check my webstar (i won't ; ) )..

It definitely won't keep me from checking webstar either because I don't intend on being there, lol. Ugh!!!!! March 15th CAN NOT get here any sooner!

I would continue checking webstar, I spoke to the admissions office yesterday and was told decisions would be made this week! Although with the March 15 deposit deadline it sounds more likely to be next week...she may have just been trying to get me to quit calling!

I haven't applied to Nova yet, but I know they take a while. I have been waiting for them to make a decision for me for the past two months, and nothing. Quick question... when is it best to apply? I am thinking applying before full undergrad is necessary, but when is it best. If I am taking the MCAT in September... (?) How do they sum up to other schools in MCAT scores? Also, for those already in FL, where did you have luck volunteering? I have been calling doctors and hospitals galore but nothing fits. It seems it is getting harder and harder to find a physician to shadow even. Any info on Nova would work. Anyone going to their Monologues this Friday??? I'll be there, and hope to make it past their admissions committee. Of all the D.O. programs, I like theirs best, and DO is what I am most looking for.

Thanks.

Lily

Hi Yogi, thank you for letting me know about the thread. I have a friend already at Nova, and she is having her time with classes. I want to know how soon I need to apply. I am changing majors from English to Bio/Chem and possibly even physics. I am thinking take the requirements and the MCAT and apply. Is this the best route? How has your luck been shadowing? I have been trying to find doctors to shadow but nothing. I have started thinking about hospitals to volunteer in, but none of them are anything more than clerical work. Has anything been different with any other FL applicants/hopefuls?

Changing your major to bio chem AND physics sounds EXTREMELY challenging. And if you plan on applying before you obtain your undergrad degree is it really necessary to be a triple major? I am a biochemistry major which give me an opportunity to explore biology and chemistry without having to double major. You're going to need A LOT of time to study for your MCAT and majoring in three different disciplines is not going to give you the time to do that.

Regarding only taking the requirements: I don't know anyone who has done that and I'm not sure whether you would be as competitive as those who have completed their degree. You would probably need to have tons of shadowing, volunteering and research as well as a GREAT MCAT score and GPA.

Regarding volunteering: I've never volunteered in a hospital and the doctor's I have volunteered have almost "fallen on my lap". My sister-in-law is a PhD who was helping a cardiologist conduct research at Jackson Memorial. Because of her I was able to come in and not only shadow the cardiologist, but assist in the research and volunteer in the free heart failure clinic where her research was taking place. Also, I did a summer internship at VITAS hospice and I met a physician there whom I truly admired. He has AMAZING bed side manner and I was dying to shadow him. I asked him if it would be OK for me to shadow him a few times after the internship was over and he agreed. One other doctor I shadowed was a D.O. and his daughter just happened to be a client of my husband's. My husband told his daughter that I was in the process of applying to med school and that I was really interested in D.O. That's when she told my husband about her dad so she contacted him and I was able to shadow him as well.

I would continue to contact physician, maybe even your own doctors, until someone agrees. It's really important to get that experience in before you apply. I hope this helps and if you have any more questions we'll be happy to help you on this forum. Best wishes!

I would not be able to triple major. That would be the worst thing I could ever do. Just the thought scares me. I am considering a possible double minor, but the thing is that if it's going to take too much time I am not going to. I think just taking some good physics courses would be good in preparation for the MCAT. On another thread I read how some upper level physics courses would have helped a recent MCAT tester, and so... I think I will make sure to take some upper level physics courses as well. Honestly I want to take the MCAT as soon as possible, but it would make no sense as to have to take it a few time when I'm not fully prepared for it right now. I am trying to plan things out right now because I just changed my major, and have a career change as well, and now I want to make sure I have everything I can do as fast as possible. I feel like I'm running a race against time, which is terrible. So, how difficult do you think Nova is? I know, first hand, they take ages to reply to things, which has been the worst for me, but I will be probably staying in South FL for med school, and Nova's OS program is what I'm looking for. I want to specialize in psychiatry or neurology, and the Osteopathic method to medicine seems like it would be great for those specialties. Both, if not all, require lots of empathy, and it seems these two are great re: the osteopathic approach where the patient is seen as a whole. I hear everyone changes their mind once they begin med school, but this has been an ongoing goal of mine. I did not know the difference between DO and MD until I met this med student from Nova, but it really seems like the approach fits well with these two specialties.

About asking my own doctors, I was told to stay away from that. I wish I could, but I think they wouldn't go for it. I am going to keep on calling doctors. I have my insurance provider list and am going through all of those first.

As for applying prior to graduation, I would definitely lose some points there, but I guess I am just worrying about having my BA and then having to wait for a year, or less, to have all things set to start med school. I am waiting now, and it's frustrating. I am waiting for May to start FIU. I talked about their new school with my friend at Nova, but we came to the conclusion they are so new. They are directly affiliated with Jackson Memorial, but Jackson is undergoing some major issues right now so that makes me question the college even more.

What do you think about times to take the test, applying, and graduation? Is it reasonable to take the MCAT while still pre-med undergrad, and then begin sending applications in after graduation? That leaves little time it seems between graduation and applications to actually get a decision back in time to begin that fall. Maybe I am all confused. Hm... okay. So I have to wait until I have a degree in hand to send in applications? Did I get that right? I can take the MCAT while an undergrad, especially because they keep scores for some years? Then it's the waiting game? That leaves how many months to get interviews and a decision?

Help is greatly appreciated!😳

There are many ways students go about taking the MCAT and applying to med school. The norm (so you don't have any time off between undergrad and med school) is to take the MCAT the summer before your senior year. That way you send out your apps as soon as you receive your results and wait for responses/interviews during your senior year. Before the year is over you should, hopefully, have an acceptance and you start med school the next fall. Therefore, you should work on getting most of the classes that are important for the MCAT done before your senior year. Mainly, orgo 1 & 2 and physics 1 & 2 and a few others. BTW, I'm not sure what you meant about "upper level" physics being beneficial for the MCAT but physics 1 & 2 is all you'll need.

A HUGE fraction of students in medical school didn't even major in a science. You don't have to take any upper level courses for MCAT. All you need is Physics 1 and 2, Orgo 1 and 2 bio 1 and 2, and gen chem 1 and 2. Other than that, you're free to do whatever you want. You can purchase some good review books online at amazon. (Exam Crackers is really cheap). Take about 8 weeks of time to study for the MCAT (which is why summer after your Junior year is great).

If you tripple major you're just shooting yourself in the foot. Even double majoring. Your GPA is a huge portion of your application. Many schools throw your application out if they see low MCAT/GPA. You want to take the courses that you feel you can do very well in--nothing to kill yourself.

Extra curriculars are also pretty important. Volunteering in a hospital is good exposure to the hospital, usually looks good, even though it is pretty much clerical work--you have to realize you're not a doctor yet and have to work your way up the chains. There are numerous other things you can do for extra-curricular experience if hospital volunteering isn't your thing... but they like to see you have some exposure to the health care field.

For shadowing a physician: you can even google search for DOs around your area, email them, let them know what your goals are, and see what they say. DOs are very excited to help out others who are looking at following the path of Osteopathic Medicine.

I just spoke with admissions and supposedly decisions have been made and will be mailed next week...however, they for some reason are not putting the decisions on webstar, or at least that is what I was told today. (Monday I was told they would be). Also, she tried looking up my file to let me know something over the phone and they had not put anything in their internal system yet. You all may have better luck than I, but wanted to let the rest of you hanging in the balance know it will not be much longer!:xf:

side note-lillianmoya I have to agree with DOstudent77. Unless you have a really great passion for science, you will be much better off sticking with a non-sci major and just taking the pre-req's. Take it from a biochem major with a great gpa for biochem but slightly below competitve levels, THEY DO NOT CARE WHAT YOU MAJOR IN, THEY ONLY WANT TO SEE HIGH GPA'S. Sucks for those of us who majored in more difficult subjects only to have our gpa's compared to those of philosophy majors (no offense meant, its what I would do if I could go back). But I am hoping that my experience will help others. (And yes my MCAT is good-29, somehow not quite balancing my 3.4 gpa). Let me reiterate, if you love science go for it, but if you only are doing it to get into med school meditate on the decision for a bit.

Is anyone going to The Vagina Monologues tonight? All the med students on campus have tickets to sell for $10. Non-students have to pay $15, but I think it's worth the $15. I have never seen them, and it sounds like it will be a good night out. If anyone else is going, I'll be wearing black pants, a white shirt, and a scarf. Maybe we can meet and say hi. I'm sure we could exchange some info and frustration as to why they haven't replied just yet. I've been waiting for them for undergrad, and they seem to have been concentrating on the DO applications because they have taken over two months to get back to me. So, if anyone else is going, say hi! Hope to see some of us there.🙂

I don't know about the physics for the MCAT personally, but I read on another thread here it would have helped. Thanks, again. I am a bio major now, with a chem minor. At least now I know when to take the test. I was wondering because the last thing I want is to have to wait a year before I can start. I will be taking my reqs beginn ing now in the summer, so I hope to have a good understanding of the material by the end of my junior year. I need to seriously concentrate on my GPA, though. I had some circumstances that led me to get to failing grades and that brought my GPA down. I am considering the bio/chem major/minor because I figured taking a few other classes would be good for the MCAT. My friend told me there are majors everywhere, and I read medical schools are actually looking for other than science majors.

I am thinking now maybe I should have left the English major. I know I'm going to have to buckle up coming this semester with my science classes. The thing is I want all the knowledge I can get because I need to balance my MCAT scores with my GPA. If Nova finally gets back to me, which I am still waiting for and will probably be notified after DO acceptances, I am going to stick to my major there, and go for my English degree and take my reqs as everyone else has. I know there are some upper level English classes I would have to take, but I would have more than enough unused credit hours to take my reqs. I have spoken to FIU about this, unfortunately not Nova yet because they have yet to make a decision regarding undergrad for me, but hopefully they get back to me soon, too. Best wishes to all the DO applicants. I know you'll hear before I do, so I wish you all the best. Also, if anyone is in SFl now, the tickets for the monologues are still available. They are $15. Hope to see some of you there. :xf:

LillianMoya,

seems to like you are trying to address too many variables at once...One thing i've learned from this application process is that your GPA/MCAT score are primarly for getting you an interview, after that, it all comes down to everything you have done to make yourself a good candidate for med schools. I agree with what others have said that for the MCAT all u need is Gen chem 1/2, Physics (non calculus) 1/2, Orgo 1/2, Bio 1/2. I self studied for (using primarily examkrackers) the MCAT and got a 30, but if i could do it all over again i would have definitely invested the money in the Kaplan course..it will directly address how to solve mcat problems better than upper level sciences courses will. Shadowing experience (particularly DO if you are interested in Nova) is very important, as is getting involved in "relevant" extracurricular activies. By relevant, i mean, don't just volunteer in things to have something to put on your resume'. In my experience it has been better to have several real meaningful experiences that you can talk about (in your personal statement and interview) than it is to have participated in a bunch of diff activities that u really have nothing meaningful to talk about. Finally, one of the most important (if not the most important)..apply EARLY! that is the mistake i made this application season for several personal reasons. (yeah, its because of a girl...lol)

Hope this helps = )

P.S. when u take a science or math course even its its not part of the required courses for med school (orgo, genchem, physics, calculus) they will still get calculated into your science gpa..so if you take other science or math courses..make sure you ace them..because even though they aren't "required" they will still be factored in to your AMCAS gpa...FYI

glad you're not offended by me correcting you. i just wouldn't want anyone to be all confused like wtf amcas?!? lolol. there would be a new thread asking "when did osteo schools start using amcas?"

Ha ha..no worries...we're all here trying to help each other out = ). although it would be comical to see a thread like that..lol...I can't wait for this process to be over...

Anyone go to The Vagina Monologues at Nova yesterday? Last night, actually... it was awesome. I had never seen this show, but wow, it's amazing!!! It was a full house too, which is great because all the proceeds went to charity. Has anyone heard anything? I think for some reason schools plan their mailing things because I never get anything from any school during the weekend. Any good news from anyone? I am still waiting, nothing new in the mail today, and now want Monday to get here soon because maybe something arrives in the mail then. If anyone hears anything, let us know.

I feel like a complete novice, but what do all of these acronyms mean? In applying to NSU I figure they will be calculating my science and my math. How does that sound? Is that what I should be expecting? Thanks!

What acronyms are you talking about in particular?

Just sent in my final deposit! It's official, I will be attending NSU next year!

you're in a DO thread. AACOMAS uses orgo, gen chem, physics, and bio. as does AMCAS, but they include math.

These are the acronyms I was talking about. That's awesome! Congratulations! How much are these deposits? I know one of them is $1500. I know what everybody always says, that once med school starts there is always a change of specialty... what specialty are you thinking of? Are you planning to specialize? You're from Orlando? I have family there, and nearby, too. I didn't know UCF had a med school, but I guess that will be one of those I will be applying to. I'm taking my MCAT, hopefully, next April, or may take it this September. I am trying to hurry up and get all my requirements done as soon as possible, but it feels like time is taking it's tole on me because the days have never seemed longer.

sorry dear.
AACOMAS=American Association of Colleges of Osteopathic Medicine Application Service
AMCAS=American Medical College Application Service
orgo=organic chemistry
gen chem=general chemistry
bio=biology

and if you see "bcmp" it means "biology, chemistry (organic and general), math, physics" and that's what the allopathic (md) schools use for science grade point average (gpa). osteopathic (do) schools do not use math for the science gpa, and they use the last grade if a class was repeated, whereas md schools average all attempts at a class for your grades. hope that helps!

Thank you for that. I knew some but was oblivious to the others. I was just looking through the official MCAT site, and was reading through their Essentials. I am anxious to finally take the exam, but studying has never been so difficult for me in my life. I think I am going to start going to the local library here because my house is not quiet enough. It's a terrible predicament, but gosh, it's the only hope I have for getting through any of the articles I'm trying to study from. I haven't gotten a study book yet, but Wikipedia has some interesting information about the basic essentials of the disciplines we need to test for. I changed majors, and am now changing careers too... this is not to mention I just moved back from Austin, TX to Miami and am using a room with no door. I have to say I have learned a few things from those wiki pages, but gosh there is nothing like starting classes. I have to wait for the summer semester now, which is terrible. I have from now until May to watch Netflix documentaries all day long. I think I am going to change my schedule so I have the early mornings to study and the rest of the sunlit day off.

I think I am going to go to the library from now on. It gets too frustrating to try and have some quiet when there is none in sight. Thanks for letting me know about the acronyms. I can say I have also acquired a long wish list at amazon and am keeping myself busy with those too.

I need May to finally get here! :scared:

Mind you, I'm serious! The door to the room is broken, and I'm stuck there. I'm glad it made you laugh. It can be a nice scene, I guess. I used to write poetry, actually, so I'm going to that side of my right brain right now. Thanks! I have yet to be at Webstar. Weren't final deposits due yesterday? Does that mean you got accepted? I have no idea where to even take the MCAT right now, all I know is that I have to wait until May to begin school. It totally sucks, but, better than vegetating at home and doing nothing. These are the chronicals of being pre-med... stress, stress, and more stress.
